Vince:

00:00:10.21 – 00:00:12.74

How are you feeling after that rough loss You

Andrew:

00:00:12.74 – 00:00:18.8

know it’s uh my my overall thought is that Purdue is the number one team in the country for a reason

Vince:

00:00:19.34 – 00:00:37.44

Yeah exactly And they looked like it tonight They were really lights out shooting 45% from three really high percentage from the field 51% from the field And you know they just bullied Penn State in that second half There was no ifs ands or buts about it Uh

Vince:

00:00:37.68 – 00:01:07.16

when you get out rebounded 38 to 17 and 10 to 2 on offensive rebounds you are not gonna win many basketball games A lot of that is due to uh you know 74 Zach et he had 13 rebounds today and only 29 minutes and uh they did a much better job on et he had 30 points in the first match up and we held him to 18 today Unfortunately that was seven of nine from the field So we didn’t do too much and

Vince:

00:01:07.36 – 00:01:18.98

we’re only able to force one turnover on him when we were doing the double teams but I’m happy that they at least tried to make someone else beat us And that guy was Mason Gillis and

Andrew:

00:01:18.99 – 00:01:19.62

 this

Vince:

00:01:19.62 – 00:01:32.61

is someone like I never heard of No no one probably ever heard of it outside of Purdue fans And uh yeah his career high was 14 and I think they said he was averaging six points a game on the

Vince:

00:01:32.77 – 00:01:59.09

on the broadcast And man this guy was lights out tonight uh nine for 12 from three breaking the Mackey Arena record you know held by Robbie Hummel and a couple of other guys uh in Purdue history and 10 and 14 from the field for 29 points could have had 30 if you made a made a free throw at the end there But man just he was lights out tonight Um just kind of one of those

Vince:

00:01:59.45 – 00:02:23.14

special games that you know seems to happen to you know a bench player that seems to happen every once in a blue moon And yeah Penn State picked a bad night to be in Mackey Arena Things were looking pretty good early You and Mikey Hen going three for three from three when no one else was hitting That was awesome to see Uh he had a really good game 11 points five assists and

Vince:

00:02:23.36 – 00:02:32.97

I think he’s got to cement his way into being the leading center with how well he plays on the offensive end but we had too many guys that just

Andrew:

00:02:33.71 – 00:02:34.28

 didn’t

Vince:

00:02:34.28 – 00:02:59.34

hit buckets tonight Andrew Funk We talked about how important he is to this team He’s really shot great in the B J C all year But outside of that he’s really struggling on the road one of nine tonight two points If that’s all we’re getting from him it’s gonna be rough Like we’re not going to win a game the rest of the season if he’s not in double figures and that’s what you need Like if he shoots like that in Minnesota

Vince:

00:02:59.66 – 00:03:07.16

When we’re at Minnesota they have one big 10 win but we will be in trouble You had Caleb Dorsey starting only took two shots and

Vince:

00:03:07.71 – 00:03:30.85

one of two miles Dredd one of 33 points Cam Winter one of three uh you know just too many guys that aren’t scoring offensively and when you’re not playing a great defensive game and holding them to a low percentage from three and you’re giving up a lot of offensive rebounds it’s just gonna be a tough sledding for the Nittany Lions

Andrew:

00:03:31.63 – 00:03:34.73

also What’s the deal with Jalen Pickett Not getting a call

Vince:

00:03:34.74 – 00:03:58.37

Yeah I I don’t understand what it is Um he’s such a great player but he never makes it to the charity stripe And Coach Bruce has brought this up several times to the media He’s uh you know sending recordings from from the games and being like Hey well why isn’t this called And you’re looking at film and you know I think he’s at the point where he’s like I give up I don’t know what to do and I’m just gonna spend more coaching instead of

Vince:

00:03:58.55 – 00:04:22.96

uh sending in these clips with questionable you know calls and you know there were a couple couple plays they got away with but overall produced defense was really good Um it’s not just an only Penn State thing they were talking about how the broadcast Purdue has a huge free throw differential between them and their opponents And that’s just something they do really well that really disciplined defensively And

Vince:

00:04:23.11 – 00:04:27.6

when you have a rim protector like Zach Edie that certainly doesn’t hurt That’s

Andrew:

00:04:27.6 – 00:04:30.05

a freaking giant of a human being

Vince:

00:04:30.06 – 00:04:46.07

Yeah And uh the doubles were great but when the other team is knocking down threes at that clip there’s just not much you can do And uh you know I thought Purdue would kind of return to their average I didn’t think they would shoot

Vince:

00:04:46.36 – 00:05:13.02

uh 44% in the first game and then 45% in the second game of three I thought they would return to 32% average and you know coach screws made some good adjustments but the lines just did not have it Um I think this could have been a more competitive game if you know some of our guys who hit threes hit threes Lundy was on but that was about it Besides Lundy Mikey had

Vince:

00:05:13.39 – 00:05:37.07

got about the amount of points you’d expect in his minutes Produce did a nice job making adjustments and shutting him down in the second half and really challenging him uh picked it okay today he had 12 points uh five of 11 from the field But you know they did a pretty good job defensively uh you know making sure he didn’t take over the game like he he often times does So you know you got to give

Vince:

00:05:37.45 – 00:05:43.83

Kudos to Perdue Perdue here Uh you know they’re the number one team in the country and they played like it at home

Andrew:

00:05:43.84 – 00:05:47.02

Yeah How did Rutgers beat this team

Vince:

00:05:47.03 – 00:05:54.76

Um Rutgers that’s a really good point Um what they did is they got Zack eating foul trouble early in the game

Vince:

00:05:55.3 – 00:05:56.55

 and that really

Vince:

00:05:57.16 – 00:06:27.11

makes a difference for this team Uh It didn’t tonight for the Lions when he was on the bench Uh Mason Willis was still knocking down threes and we did nothing to stop him and when somebody’s hot you got to do something to slow him down and Penn State really didn’t do much to slow down Mason Willis I think they’re more concerned with Brandon Smith and uh you know Fletcher lawyer since they both let Penn State up in their first match up So

Vince:

00:06:27.29 – 00:06:38.35

um Brandon Smith had a good game he was four for nine had nine points Um Yeah Purdue just everyone was on tonight Uh not many guys outside of Edie and

Vince:

00:06:39.2 – 00:06:45.57

um you know Gillis took a lot of shots Everyone else was taken between two and five shots for the most part and

Vince:

00:06:46.09 – 00:07:15.63

You know they were hitting so uh really tough day for the Nittany Lions but uh things are going to get better They’ve had a lot of the tough teams in the front half of their big 10 schedule Uh they are five and six I think the ones that really hurt as a whole are losing to Michigan state at home any home loss hurts They played pretty well for the most part of that game for Michigan state took over in the last 10 minutes

Vince:

00:07:16.06 – 00:07:27.0

Um that road loss at Wisconsin That was a heartbreaker One of those games that they should have won I think those two are are definitely the toughest losses But

Vince:

00:07:27.73 – 00:07:39.12

yeah it’s tough sledding and they’re gonna have have to turn things around and do better on the glass if they’re going to have a chance to sweep the Nebraska Cornhuskers Cornhuskers this Sunday

Andrew:

00:07:39.13 – 00:07:53.14

Yeah definitely I mean it uh this has been an up and down season to say the least Um you know even though I haven’t been a part of this pod series have been able to you know tune into games here and there just you know the scheduling of it and all But

Andrew:

00:07:53.39 – 00:08:00.29

Um Penn State has nine games left in the regular season before we get into tournament play

Andrew:

00:08:00.66 – 00:08:25.98

Um what do you think Penn State has to do record wise to put themselves in a position to be considered for the N C double A tournament Because it seems like every time they have a blowout win all these stories come out as saying like Penn State is going to be maybe like they’re definitely a bubble team but they’re probably the first four out or something like that What kind of record do you think Penn State has to have over these last nine games to put them in a realistic position to be in the tournament

Vince:

00:08:26.4 – 00:08:34.74

What I think they need to do is get to the 20 win mark and they really haven’t done much to help themselves They’ve just

Vince:

00:08:35.36 – 00:09:00.18

I haven’t won enough of the close games I think um the Clemson loss and Virginia tech loss early in the season is really gonna come back and haunt them I think it’s gonna be tough sledding looking ahead the schedule here So with nine games remaining you know Penn State’s 14 and eight on the season you have uh so end of the day you got to get to 20 wins Uh Nebraska

Vince:

00:09:00.37 – 00:09:05.98

I think that’s a kind of a toss up game for me I’m kind of 5050 on that one

Vince:

00:09:06.56 – 00:09:08.14

 so I could see them

Vince:

00:09:09.03 – 00:09:33.32

maybe sweeping but they need to do better on the glass And um I think Mikey hadn’t is gonna have a difficult time guarding Derrick Walker just because he is so athletic and so quick or as Mike is more of a stronger guy and he’s physical So that might be a matchup where you might see Cabbage I starting back even though he didn’t have a great game today only had a few minutes and you know Edie dominated him

Andrew:

00:09:33.88 – 00:09:38.75

Which I thought was kind of strange Is it normal for him to only have like seven minutes of game time

Vince:

00:09:39.54 – 00:09:57.21

Um So it depends uh last week Coach True’s mixed up the lineup and he started Caleb Dorsey and Mikey had instead of Cam winter who’s been in a big slump and continued to stay in a big slump today He had four turnovers and no assist only

Andrew:

00:09:57.22 – 00:09:58.26

 uh one

Vince:

00:09:58.26 – 00:10:08.79

three So got blocked a couple of times So he just had a tough sledding these past couple of weeks after looking really promising early in the season I’m not sure

Vince:

00:10:09.1 – 00:10:15.8

what it’s gonna take for him to get out of the slump miles Dredd you know early in the season he was looking great

Vince:

00:10:16.39 – 00:10:32.44

really high volume of threes and he’s only been taking you know three shots a game on average So um I think I’d like to see him get a little more involved and them getting him some opportunities it seems to go to funk and that’s it And then if he’s not hitting then

Vince:

00:10:33.6 – 00:11:01.7

you know we’re not we’re not getting another guy to step up and you know Lundy’s hitting but he’s kind of doing that every game and you know picks doing his thing But we we need as a team to really step up And in the B J C they’ve been great this year They’ve uh really don’t have many guys that have off nights Like you might have one guy who’s a little off but for the most part uh they’re all clicking The chemistry is good and they’re knocking down shots But looking at the schedule so we need six wins We’ll go through this real quick So

Vince:

00:11:02.26 – 00:11:03.47

 Nebraska

Vince:

00:11:04.34 – 00:11:34.19

I think playing produces tough and then heading there So I’m not I’m not going to mark that as a win Wisconsin at home I think we’ll win that one I don’t think they beat us twice We played well at home I’ll roll with Wisconsin at Maryland I don’t see us winning on the road We haven’t done it all year I don’t see that changing until they prove me wrong Illinois has been our only road conference when we have the align I at home

Vince:

00:11:34.72 – 00:12:03.58

I don’t think they’re going to sweep Illinois They’re playing really well right now I think we got them at a good time when they’re kind of going into a mini slump So I think that’s going to be a loss Minnesota on the road I think that’s a win there towards the bottom of the big 10 Ohio state That’s another like 50 50 game But Ohio State even though there towards the bottom there they’re no slouches They’re pretty good So I think that could be a tough win for Penn State Rutgers at home I think we can win that

Vince:

00:12:03.96 – 00:12:33.93

Uh Northwestern on the road They’re pretty good this year Um you know we’ll see how they’re looking in March They had a couple of games postponed because of COVID So we haven’t gotten to see quite as much of them They’re they’re six and four in big 10 play So we’ll see if they continue to look good or if they trend more down kind of how they have been in the past So I’m not gonna mark that as a guaranteed win And uh Maryland I think they’ll they’ll win at home against Maryland on senior night I like us to split with them and

Vince:

00:12:34.13 – 00:12:56.14

you know get back at Rutgers So if you’re looking at my predictions I think they’ll finish the regular season with 18 wins And uh yeah this Nebraska game coming up is a must win on the road at Ohio State I think that’s a must win I think those are two games where you know if they can win those they’ll they’ll be in the big 10 tournament with 20 wins

Andrew:

00:12:56.69 – 00:13:07.62

So do you think that if they get to that 21 mark they should be into the tournament or do you think that they have to make kind of a run at the Big 10 tournament

Vince:

00:13:08.61 – 00:13:37.06

Yeah So I would say they need 20 wins and then at least one win in the big 10 tournament Like they need to win their first game I think if they do that they have a really good shot Um if they only get 18 wins you’re gonna have to look at them getting pretty far into the tournament which um I don’t think it’s too likely at this point But hey um the good news is unless Penn State loses out this year um you know they’re going to have a better record than last year last year They only had 14 wins

Vince:

00:13:37.23 – 00:13:41.05

So this is a step in the right direction for Penn State Yeah

Andrew:

00:13:41.06 – 00:13:50.66

For sure And you know what’s strange is that Penn State tends to weirdly show up in the big 10 tournament So I don’t think that two wins Are that out of the question

Vince:

00:13:50.67 – 00:14:03.83

Yeah And you know I there are some other games on here that they can win like Northwestern on the road at the end of the season with their schedule being a little more back loaded They’ll probably have to make up

Vince:

00:14:04.03 – 00:14:13.99

Those two big 10 games that they that they did not originally have So they might be facing Penn State on tired legs in their matchup that could go their way

Vince:

00:14:14.78 – 00:14:34.05

Um Illinois maybe Andrew Funk continues to be awesome and Illinois just doesn’t have it Uh to win in the B J C we could sweep them so things could go our way But when I when I am looking at these teams most of these teams aren’t super high in the big 10 standings You have Northwestern

Vince:

00:14:34.54 – 00:15:01.17

who is a second at six and four U of Illinois seven and four Maryland is six and five You have Wisconsin Ohio State Nebraska and Minnesota All those guys are at the bottom We get to see all of them So those are four right there that I think you know those are the must wins those four and then they got to find a way to get two wins out of those other ones So you need at least

Vince:

00:15:01.66 – 00:15:12.83

two wins between Northwestern Illinois Rutgers Maryland Those are those are the ones where you gotta find two wins out of those five games

Andrew:

00:15:12.84 – 00:15:26.2

Gotcha And you know looking back on the games that Penn State has one um you know like when you look at the games that they’ve won they now have a 19 point victory over number 1 21 Indiana

Andrew:

00:15:26.36 – 00:15:45.9

And then they also had a really solid uh 15 point win over then ranked Illinois on the road Do you think that those two ranked winds could help push their consideration for the tournament a little bit if they’re kind of like on the bubble with a couple of other edge teams

Vince:

00:15:46.41 – 00:15:50.55

Um I don’t I don’t know necessarily how much that will help um

Vince:

00:15:51.06 – 00:16:09.94

You know I I don’t think the committee is going to look at um into this but when we did play Indiana we did have a Indiana did have a lot of injuries So they weren’t at full strength in the end of the past couple weeks been playing really good basketball and they’ve been one of the best teams in the conference and actually just jump back into the top 25 this week

Vince:

00:16:11.02 – 00:16:12.71

 Illinois is grooving

Vince:

00:16:13.39 – 00:16:40.65

for some reason They beat Texas who was like the number two team in the country at the time and then dropped an egg against us at home And you know the coaches like oh no one no one works hard No one tries like only this one guy does I forgot who it was Um and you know had a week or two where they’re kind of in a slump but then they started playing Illinois basketball game and Illinois is one of the big you know big basketball programs in the big 10 So

Vince:

00:16:40.83 – 00:16:53.44

I think they’re getting back more to what they do uh you know in playing to the level of the program the program is accustomed to So I think it’s gonna be tough to beat them in the B J C next week

Andrew:

00:16:53.45 – 00:17:03.62

Good stuff man So do you want to move on to the Nebraska game I mean obviously you’ve touched on it a little bit here but who are some of the players that we should be looking out for

Vince:

00:17:03.94 – 00:17:29.69

Yeah the best player on their team is by far Derrick Walker This guy is just an absolute monster He’s 69 super athletic has really good post moves really smart moves Well um you know great player He’s just one of those guys uh you know hustle player and kind of reminds me a little bit of Clifford and marry a but I think he’s a little more

Andrew:

00:17:30.43 – 00:17:31.31

 you know he I think

Vince:

00:17:31.31 – 00:17:44.37

Is a little bit of a better shooter and has a midrange game So he averages 13.4 points a game 7.4 rebounds 3.4 assists So overall really solid basketball player really athletic really good score

Vince:

00:17:44.93 – 00:18:07.61

So he’s definitely the guy to look out for when he played Penn State last time these two teams met up he had 20 points So he had a really nice game Another guy to look out for is Sam Grizzle and he is a graduate transfer So he’s moved in the program He’s kind of like a point forward 67 really takes good care of the basketball

Vince:

00:18:07.9 – 00:18:27.83

And um you know can shoot from anywhere on the field anywhere on the floor So he’s really efficient in his game and can kind of do everything he can drive he can pass he can shoot Uh so he’s got to look out for another guy is Tominaga He’s there three point specialist he shoots at about 38%

Vince:

00:18:28.35 – 00:18:43.68

So he’s the guy that they do need to shut down around the perimeter They did a pretty good job of that for the most part when they played in the B J C So that is definitely something that they will need to do again So those are the big three that I’m looking at for the cornhuskers

Andrew:

00:18:43.69 – 00:18:48.49

So how do you think they match up with Penn State’s personnel So you mentioned about

Andrew:

00:18:48.71 – 00:19:00.43

uh Walker maybe being a tough matchup for Mikey Henne But do you think that guys like Jalen Pickett might create some matchup problems for the cornhuskers Like do you think it goes both ways

Vince:

00:19:01.38 – 00:19:04.78

Well I think Jalen Pickett is a tough matchup for everybody

Andrew:

00:19:04.79 – 00:19:05.88

 right He’s

Vince:

00:19:05.88 – 00:19:14.47

just so good and you know I think Gristle you know he has the length that can maybe help but you know Jalen is really physical and

Vince:

00:19:14.99 – 00:19:24.39

um you know takes good care of the ball even though he takes a lot of dribbles he’s still able to make good decisions Like if he double if he’s getting double teamed he finds a three point shooter and

Vince:

00:19:25.12 – 00:19:28.17

uh you know with our guys shooting pretty well um

Vince:

00:19:29.19 – 00:19:57.31

you know in the B J C that worked out really well However this team has really struggled on the road and when Penn State played them for the coaches versus cancer game a couple weeks ago uh Nebraska is really content to let us shoot So that matchup kind of worked in our favor However Penn State hasn’t shot as well on the road So Nebraska might implement that same strategy and you might see Penn State start to struggle and you might see them

Vince:

00:19:57.63 – 00:20:26.13

actually having to find ways to score in the post And uh defensively I think Evan Mahaffey you’re gonna see a lot of him in this game against Nebraska Uh he’s 66 really athletic can jump out of the gym and he can definitely contend with Derrick Walker’s athleticism Uh Derrick Walker definitely is a lot stronger and uh you know can move him around but Evans Mahaffey wingspan and athleticism I think can make up for that And I think I have a really good game defensively

Andrew:

00:20:26.57 – 00:20:39.82

obviously on this show we love our predictions and I know that you know you haven’t stopped that trend with basketball game So do you have a communion prediction for this upcoming clash with the cornhuskers

Vince:

00:20:39.83 – 00:20:47.56

Yeah So my communion prediction is that I think we are going to see Evan Mahaffey back into double figures He had a

Vince:

00:20:48.14 – 00:21:14.65

Um a couple of weeks where like he was just like making plays everywhere the past week or two he’s been kind of quiet hasn’t been getting as many minutes hasn’t been making any as many of those splash plays as we’re used to seeing him make So I think you’re gonna see him kind of get back in the groove against the cornhuskers I think you’ll see him with 10 points and I think you might see some pretty good defensive plays and rebounds and hustle plays and

Vince:

00:21:14.84 – 00:21:18.16

all the things that Evan behavior likes to do for this basketball team

Andrew:

00:21:18.17 – 00:21:43.57

mind for this game is just gonna be a continuation of the trend that we’ve seen for Penn State basketball over the past four games So we started with a double digit point victory followed by a double digit point loss another double digit point victory and then tonight’s double digit point loss So I’m going to say that this trend continues and that Penn State is going to beat Nebraska by at least 12 points

Vince:

00:21:44.24 – 00:21:53.39

Yeah I hope that comes true as well And you know that would be huge especially since this team beat Penn State by like 30 points last year I went to that game and it was just

Vince:

00:21:53.92 – 00:22:21.92

miserable to watch Um they were really physical against us and we couldn’t match up with their physicality and they were knocking down threes and I was just like wow um this was definitely one of the teams I was more worried about just because of how good they were last year But you know the crowd in the B J C has been really good when the college students have been there It’s been a really good atmosphere and a lot of teams have struggled shooting well in the B J C So um yeah I think

Vince:

00:22:22.14 – 00:22:26.18

being on the road is going to be a lot more difficult for the lions

Andrew:

00:22:26.77 – 00:22:31.17

Yeah that’s fair So then what would you say is your final score prediction

Vince:

00:22:31.18 – 00:22:37.46

Alright Final score prediction at the cornhuskers I think I will say

Vince:

00:22:38.03 – 00:22:42.55

 Nebraska 68 Penn State 64

Andrew:

00:22:43.16 – 00:22:43.98

 Yeah

Vince:

00:22:43.99 – 00:22:59.45

close loss I think it will be very competitive I think Penn State you know defense travels as Charlie likes to say so um you know I think that can help them I don’t think they’re going to get beat up on the glass that badly I think they’re going to

Vince:

00:23:00.0 – 00:23:29.76

really take it personally that they got their butts whooped and this is really the second time Purdue has just annihilated them on the glass Uh you know just absolutely bullied them and when you get out rebounded 38 to 17 like you’re you’re not winning basketball games So you know I think they’ll do a better job with that deficit and rebounds were a big turning point in this matchup We we won that 32 to 31 Uh So you know that that played a big part in this game

Andrew:

00:23:30.24 – 00:23:43.32

for my final score prediction Considering what I said for my Communion prediction I think I’m gonna have to go with Penn State 68 Nebraska 50 for just a gut feeling

Vince:

00:23:43.35 – 00:23:58.78

Gut feeling So I’ll be looking for 68 I hope that is the final score I actually almost nailed won the Iowa game I predicted they would win 83-82 in Iowa We beat Iowa 83-79

Vince:

00:23:59.19 – 00:24:02.91

and they missed like a three point shot like at the buzzer that would have

Andrew:

00:24:03.65 – 00:24:04.06

 to

Vince:

00:24:04.06 – 00:24:04.62

 so

Vince:

00:24:05.19 – 00:24:09.92

um little Nostradamus stuff type stuff there So almost

Andrew:

00:24:09.93 – 00:24:31.71

almost almost So obviously that game is coming up here in a couple of days So Penn State fans have a couple of days to kind of get ready for that game Obviously with Vince’s expert analysis here you’ll be all set and ready to go But Vince I think we’ve got to give a huge shout out since we have mentioned the Iowa Hawkeyes

Andrew:

00:24:31.86 – 00:24:38.08

The Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling team taking it to the # two Hawkeyes in the Bryce Jordan Center

Vince:

00:24:38.09 – 00:24:47.75

man What a what a matchup And what I gotta say is like man Penn State it seems like the higher the weight class goes the better Penn State does Like

Vince:

00:24:48.39 – 00:24:52.16

I tuned in when they were down 11-9 We we got home

Vince:

00:24:52.72 – 00:25:20.4

uh from an event that we’re going to and I was like hey this is on big 10 network and its number one versus number two and never really followed wrestling quite as much So it was really fun Uh Texting you being like what does ride time mean And like our guy only lost the match by one point Why it is like I would get three points They’re the only one by one and in the individual match up And I couldn’t understand why like they stopped stopped the match Tech fall and have that be five and

Vince:

00:25:20.63 – 00:25:37.59

Not let the wrestler go for six points So things like that confused me But you know the environment was awesome to be JC It was absolutely electric sold out if Maggie and I would have somehow got gotten in there it would have been 16,000 fans instead of like 15,998

Vince:

00:25:37.87 – 00:25:43.53

Yeah maybe we’ll have to get to a wrestling match and enjoy that because man are they are they a really talented program

Andrew:

00:25:43.54 – 00:25:57.64

Yeah for sure Yeah You know I wasn’t overly surprised to see Penn State get down early just because Iowa does have one of the better wrestlers in the country in Spencer Lee I think he’s at the

Andrew:

00:25:57.97 – 00:26:25.21

the 1 25 weight class So I really thought that it was likely that they were gonna get some bonus points from Spencer’s match What was really key though was Roman Bravo Young following that up with bonus points of his own with that pin which I don’t even know what his opponent was doing trying to shoot that shot right at the end of the match because like he was going down he was going for that shot and then as soon as Roman had him like he was done for so that was huge for us Um

Andrew:

00:26:25.36 – 00:26:52.5

like I said during our text exchange I kind of thought that you know Carter Shiraishi looked like he had a bit of a down match Usually he’s a bit more aggressive likes to put up a lot more points and uh likes to you know kind of get those those bonus points in the form of riding time and stuff like that But you’re absolutely right that you know Penn State historically has done really well in the higher weight classes especially with guys like Greg Kirk Fleet uh Carter Schillaci like we mentioned

Andrew:

00:26:52.86 – 00:26:59.17

Max Dean So there’s a lot of guys who kind of pick up that later part of the

Andrew:

00:26:59.75 – 00:27:28.3

I guess what you call it the lineup for Penn State But yeah I mean obviously just enormous event You got guys like Micah Parsons coming and is sitting ringside Actually think it’s awesome how much of a fan Micah is a Penn State wrestling He always has been even dating back to the time that he was a Nittany lion Um You know he’d be like jawing back and forth with Bo Nickel about hitting the wrestling match and stuff like that And uh after his match I think it was something on the big 10 network

Andrew:

00:27:28.54 – 00:27:47.71

They were interviewing Roman Bravo Young and he said that he took down Micah because they were just doing some like scrapping in the in the wrestling room or whatever So just some some good natured fun between some Nittany Lions of different different sports But nonetheless just you know Penn State wrestling doing Penn State wrestling things Yeah

Vince:

00:27:47.71 – 00:27:54.74

I remember when I was in high school uh you know our math teacher Mr Moore he was the basketball coach and

Vince:

00:27:54.98 – 00:28:00.68

uh he said do not challenge a wrestler to a wrestling match unless you are significantly bigger than them

Andrew:

00:28:00.69 – 00:28:19.87

Yeah I mean it’s uh it’s a tough it’s a tough thing man I mean like these guys they they’re the best of the best of the best because wrestling is such a technical sport that you know with the you know with like basketball and with football and other sports you know you’re able to kind of assert your dom

Andrew:

00:28:19.88 – 00:28:36.89

in in terms of like your size like your your strength because you’re just physically bigger than the other person But when you’re the exact same weight like maybe like a half inch taller or shorter than the next guy or the guy in front of you it’s it’s tough to kind of um you know be that

Andrew:

00:28:37.25 – 00:29:01.68

like overwhelmingly physical because the guy is just as physical and strong So you know I love kind of the just the technique behind it Like you just tell that these guys put in the hard yards and practice all the time especially like with like Penn State is a very good team when it comes to controlling things in the top position That’s why you have guys like uh like max Dean with that

Andrew:

00:29:01.93 – 00:29:22.82

Really epic like 3rd period ride out on in the top position Like those guys you know you have to just be just super mindful of like your positioning so that you’re not getting hit with like uh with stalling and stuff like that So it was just super impressive to kind of see them hunker down after getting down early um and just not really flinch

Vince:

00:29:23.2 – 00:29:34.52

Yeah and really asked him to see kudos to the wrestling program I remember I actually did hold my own when I wrestled one of my college teammates once So our cross country team

Andrew:

00:29:34.53 – 00:29:35.32

 we were

Vince:

00:29:35.32 – 00:29:47.37

just like you know like two people were like randomly wrestling and I went against a guy who who also wrestled um you know we were out the same way Wait but like I had a longer wingspan So like

Andrew:

00:29:47.82 – 00:29:48.27

 I

Vince:

00:29:48.27 – 00:29:56.25

was able to like make sure he didn’t get me on my back because I was strong and had a really strong core So I couldn’t get my back But like whenever I got him and like

Vince:

00:29:57.0 – 00:30:18.32

I don’t know like a bear hug or something like I was like I don’t know how to flip him on his back to like pin him or whatever I was like technique wise I have no idea how to get him stuck So like um yeah so I was just like squeezing and having no idea what I was doing So that was my wrestling experience Andrew I think you should share your because you have an interesting wrestling career

Andrew:

00:30:18.33 – 00:30:25.58

Yeah it was yeah it was a short career and it didn’t Exactly

Andrew:

00:30:25.59 – 00:30:41.38

And very elegantly So I wrestled for one season in middle school I wrestled the 1 45 and 1 38 weight class Um which is you know I would kind of call that like you know some of the more competitive weight classes out there because

Andrew:

00:30:41.52 – 00:30:56.78

it’s like when you when you hit like 1 38 through like 1 52 or 1 55 I forget what it was Those are kind of like more of the common weight classes So a lot of guys in our wrestling room um some very very good wrestlers out there in those weight classes So

Andrew:

00:30:56.97 – 00:31:21.61

um yeah in our last match of the season guy got behind me spun me to the to the spun me to the mat and my kneecap dislocated So I was uh so I lost that match by virtue of just not having a functioning leg anymore Um and that was affectionate effectively the end of my wrestling career And um about a year after that is when I took up tennis and the rest is history

Vince:

00:31:21.62 – 00:31:23.76

 the rest is history So

Vince:

00:31:23.99 – 00:31:36.45

yeah I just remember Amerman uh wheeling you around in the wheel wheelchair like for like a month because he had the same class schedule as you and I had a couple of classes together and he would just be wheeling you through

Andrew:

00:31:36.45 – 00:31:36.93

 and

Andrew:

00:31:37.81 – 00:31:45.9

yeah that was that was that was funny the way that that worked out because you know I was like trying to figure out like how I could uh you know maneuver my way around the school because

Andrew:

00:31:46.03 – 00:31:52.09

I mean you remember how like weird the middle school was like with how they had stairs in like random spots and then they

Vince:

00:31:52.09 – 00:31:53.22

 had it was really

Andrew:

00:31:53.4 – 00:31:54.34

 it

Vince:

00:31:54.34 – 00:32:03.5

was like it was like three different floors but like only like floors Like it was almost like a basement area sort of and it was like an elevator a lot

Andrew:

00:32:03.51 – 00:32:09.52

Yeah it was tough to initially like use crutches right after that injury because

Andrew:

00:32:09.74 – 00:32:34.09

uh the immobilizer that I had on my leg basically kept my leg completely straight So it’s not like I could bend it and use crutches you know like a like a normal person would if they were to injure their leg So yeah the wheelchair was just kind of the easier route because I could just stick it up and not have to move it and stuff But yeah so that was uh it was it sucked it sucked in the moment that hurt a lot And yeah so

Andrew:

00:32:34.36 – 00:32:55.94

that was the end of my end of my wrestling career But you know thankfully I’m able to appreciate wrestling um you know a bit more from just a like a unique perspective I would never even like really call myself a former wrestler just because of how briefly I did it But it’s it’s neat to kind of watch guys at the level of teams like Penn State

Andrew:

00:32:56.11 – 00:33:18.23

and be able to recognize like okay like he’s going for like he has this like locked up he’s trying to go for like a single like takedown or something like that and he’s really like kind of tilting this guy hard to try and lock up a cradle or something You know it’s like I’m able to kind of like pick out little things like that and it adds uh it just adds a little something for my viewership So you know it’s just kind of a neat perspective Yeah

Vince:

00:33:18.23 – 00:33:25.41

that is really saying one question I have for you like why are the weight classes like so close together Like it will be like

Vince:

00:33:25.84 – 00:33:34.26

Like 165 to like 1 74 and then it goes from like 200 to like to 85 Like why is there

Andrew:

00:33:34.26 – 00:33:35.53

 such a gap

Vince:

00:33:35.54 – 00:33:51.35

Because like I’m like oh like you know the second highest was like 200 like 10 and then one from like 2 10 to like to 85 I was like why is there such a big gap Why is there not like a like a 2 40 like 2 50 weight class somewhere in between

Andrew:

00:33:51.58 – 00:34:19.03

Yeah You know I don’t know the full answer to that I think like just for the heavyweights that just kind of allows for you know bigger guys to kind of be big and wrestle Um because I think like historically like you know guys who were that big didn’t wrestle all too much Uh or you know maybe I shouldn’t say that I think it’s just like you know when you when you have guys who are like smaller maybe a bit more

Andrew:

00:34:19.21 – 00:34:48.92

um like compact and stuff like that like the reason why why there are so many weight classes because you go from like 1 40 something to like 1 80 something that’s like £40 of pure muscle that the other wrestler will have on their opponent And you know you can’t out technique that in most cases So you know when you go from like a huge jump to like you had mentioned like a 2 15 or something to all the way to like to 85 then that just you know is what they just call the heavyweights and

Andrew:

00:34:49.16 – 00:35:06.4

you know just gives uh more guys the opportunity But even in that case like in those situations like technique usually wins out because I mean um you had a guy Gable Stevenson from Minnesota who he was he was awesome Um Really really good at Minnesota Our guy

Andrew:

00:35:06.61 – 00:35:25.56

actually beat him in the N C double A finals his freshman year and then he just kind of ran the table in the N C double A tournament from then on But you know he’s since won a gold medal in the heavyweights for the United States at this most recent Olympics So obviously humongously um

Andrew:

00:35:25.57 – 00:35:44.53

successful wrestler and stuff like that But even then you know Gable won because he was just more technically sound than his opponent You know you got to leverage your athleticism and just make sure that that’s paired well with your technique because I mean there’s obviously so much weight being thrown around between yourself and your opponent that you have to

Andrew:

00:35:44.67 – 00:36:07.88

you know just make sure that you’re not pulling yourself into a trap basically because they might be allowing you to take a shot because they have a counter in mind or something like that So you know to go back to your original question I don’t know historically why you know there’s there’s such a huge gap between like a heavyweight and the next weight class down The best answer that I can give or the best guess that I can give is that it’s like that because that’s just how it always has been

Vince:

00:36:08.52 – 00:36:13.97

Yeah just because it’s always been this way like I’m like it must be like super annoying if you’re like

Vince:

00:36:14.59 – 00:36:30.41

Built like a linebacker and like you know £240, like is good for your body but like you can’t slim down enough to like 2-15 but like you also like can’t bulk up and feel good at like 285-80

Andrew:

00:36:30.42 – 00:36:43.3

I mean yeah And that that’s totally valid I don’t know like what the science is behind you know like what the best weight is to be because I mean I’m just trying to see like

Andrew:

00:36:43.59 – 00:37:01.15

how big Greg fleet is because he’s the number two guy previously the number one guy before they wrestled before they wrestled Michigan So now let’s see here it’s tough because all it’s showing me is this weight class Um

Andrew:

00:37:01.3 – 00:37:13.69

Yeah I guess that’s not going to show me but either way Yeah I mean you’re right Um I will say like there’s like Greg Ugly like you can tell he’s like the guy is not like £300 but he’s like athletic

Andrew:

00:37:13.94 – 00:37:42.29

So it’s I think yeah like you you like if you had a guy like you know like Curtis Jacobs out there like he’ll still do pretty well and heavy weights and stuff It’s just kind of a delicate balance between like being bigger but also making sure that you’re not like sacrificing your ability to kind of execute the like whatever takedowns you want to do and stuff like that because they spend a lot of time on their feet Heavyweights Um so you know you gotta be like really selective when you go and take those shots

Vince:

00:37:42.62 – 00:37:51.46

Yeah because I I just imagine like when I watched the NFL and stuff like a like a tight end trying to block a defensive end like by themselves it never ends well like you have

Vince:

00:37:51.99 – 00:38:18.43

you know and I’m sure they’re both good like technique wise because you know tight ends have to do a lot of blocking and they’re like you know to 40 to 50 defensive ends are like usually like to 60 to 70 and they just get wrecked and that’s only like 10 £20 difference So I always think of that but speaking of linemen in the trenches the Nittany Lions got a big signing uh today So you want to talk about that

Andrew:

00:38:18.58 – 00:38:36.14

Yeah let’s do it Yeah So Penn State finished out there 2023 recruiting class in a big way They added four star offensive tackle chimney ono to a class that already features uh top 10 offensive lineman Javon Williams

Andrew:

00:38:36.3 – 00:38:53.18

and as well as uh offensive guard Alex Birch Meyer This really is significant in so many ways just because Penn State is getting another talented offensive lineman But when when you look at the stats in terms of how highly

Andrew:

00:38:53.19 – 00:39:10.58

these offensive linemen are rated as recruits relative to other schools in the country do you know that there’s only one school in the country who has a recruiting class that has higher rated offensive linemen in terms of its average Vince you wanna take a guess at which school that is I

Vince:

00:39:10.58 – 00:39:13.15

 will say Georgia

Andrew:

00:39:13.16 – 00:39:19.2

you’re close It’s it’s Alabama So Alabama yeah the the average rating of

Andrew:

00:39:19.48 – 00:39:32.58

Alabama’s offensive line recruits is something like 94 Penn State is right behind them at number two with like 93 point something So Penn State with this class

Andrew:

00:39:32.75 – 00:39:50.75

has out recruited every other school not named Alabama in terms of offensive linemen And that’s so significant because this could really be the turning point where we’ve seen years of struggling offensive lines for Penn State Seems like they really put it all together this season

Andrew:

00:39:50.76 – 00:40:12.46

And now we’re bringing in an additional crop of talent that’s gonna be the likes of land and tang walls and Drew Shelton’s and oh by the way we probably also have the best offensive tackle in college football in Olu Fashanu coming back as well So Penn State is going to be absolutely loaded at the offensive line for years to come They’re already in talks with a lot of highly rated recruits

Andrew:

00:40:12.65 – 00:40:28.83

In the offensive line for the 2024 class like they are every season But you know so many times Penn State has lost out on those guys and 2023 has been the year where that hasn’t happened So there’s so many reasons why this is so significant for Penn State football but I am so excited for them Yeah

Vince:

00:40:28.84 – 00:40:42.47

And if you’re a recruit and you see Nick Singleton and K Tron Allen and how good they are like that just must be exciting if you’re a high school kid being like I can block for that guy and he’s going to make me look really good

Vince:

00:40:42.72 – 00:41:07.12

you know for the NFL So not only do you have that going for you you got Growler who’s you know showing a lot of you know flashes of potential to be really really good and you know new wide receivers coming in a new wide receivers coach So uh you know really good tight end group uh so you know this is gonna be a fun place to be an offensive lineman in the future if things keep trying this way

Andrew:

00:41:07.29 – 00:41:35.59

Yeah no doubt And I think right now Phil Trautwein has the perfect recruiting tool in fashion You because this is the first year that we’ve seen any significant action from oh fashion you in terms of significant or meaningful minutes for Penn State football And he was automatically just catapulted to a projected top 10 pick in the NFL So he can go into these offensive line recruits living rooms and say hey

Andrew:

00:41:35.77 – 00:42:01.23

you know I have the stuff to take you to the top I was there myself I was a part of a national championship winning team as an offensive lineman I’ve coached all American offensive lineman my entire career so far Look at what I’ve done in one year with no fashion You you’ve obviously got the talent and the chops to do this as well come play for me and I’ll make sure that you get to where you need to go as well Like there’s really not a better recruiting pitch than that

Vince:

00:42:01.46 – 00:42:06.66

Yeah And it’s kind of also how you saw Michigan kind of get over the hump against

Andrew:

00:42:07.33 – 00:42:07.98

 They developed

Vince:

00:42:07.98 – 00:42:25.48

a great running game and and then when you have to sell out to stop that good rushing attack that wears you down over time and that opens up the passing game and it just makes that so much easier And also you know when you’re going against in Ohio State with all the prolific wide receivers they have

Vince:

00:42:25.8 – 00:42:45.1

and you know a quarterback like C J Stroud the best way to compete against them is to keep the ball out of their hands And if you run the ball a lot and when that time of possession that keeps your defense fresher and makes it easier to compete in the fourth quarter where you saw Penn State kinda falter against the Buckeyes

Andrew:

00:42:45.46 – 00:43:03.02

100% And you know we talk all the time about what means success in the NFL or what translates into success in the NFL And a lot of times we go back to the offensive and defensive line like those games and leagues are won in the trenches

Andrew:

00:43:03.44 – 00:43:19.57

So if you want to kind of retrofit that to college football I don’t think it’s very much of a coincidence that the two years that Michigan has gone to the college football playoff they’ve also been awarded the award for college football’s best offensive line That’s not a coincidence

Vince:

00:43:19.58 – 00:43:26.78

Yeah Absolutely not And you know our birds getting back to the Super Bowl they had the highest rated offensive line So

Vince:

00:43:27.01 – 00:43:55.33

it’s it’s the most important position group in football because those guys aren’t gonna tire out like the defensive lineman Um you know if they’re getting on the field for a long time like those guys when when they get things going your team scoring points the other team you know starts to panic a little bit gets in catch up mode They might have to be one dimensional and pass the ball and then that frees things up for your pass rush and doing your pass rush packages So

Vince:

00:43:55.53 – 00:43:59.79

um yeah offensive line definitely the most important position group of football

Andrew:

00:43:59.8 – 00:44:20.15

agreed So obviously huge get for Phil Trautwein and James Franklin and the entire team Phil Trautwein is kind of etching himself a really nice spot in this Penn State coaching staff really kind of to the point where Jay want Cider has been for a while now in that

Andrew:

00:44:20.34 – 00:44:30.26

you know we’ll have Phil Trautwein for as long as he wants to stay in Happy Valley because if things keep going the way that they’re going we’re going to be very happy with our offensive line play

Vince:

00:44:30.96 – 00:44:47.94

Yeah Happy things in Happy Valley That’s that’s what I like to see Uh Yeah anything you want to talk on talk about before we get out of here I do have one kind of thing I want to talk about That was kind of funny that happened to me in State College But you have anything else you want to talk about before we get out here

Andrew:

00:44:47.95 – 00:44:51.13

No man Just go birds We’re going back to the Super Bowl

Vince:

00:44:51.4 – 00:44:56.08

Yes back to the Super Bowl Go birds fly You’ll fly

Andrew:

00:44:56.09 – 00:44:58.15

So hit me with your funny story

Vince:

00:44:58.16 – 00:45:15.96

So funny story Um So my girlfriend and I we we did the track meet at Penn State Um Penn State had some nice times there Uh You saw the women got the number two D M R That’s the distance medley relay time in program history So they run really well Faith Tamar

Vince:

00:45:16.16 – 00:45:39.74

set the number three all time for women in the three K for indoor at Penn State So those were a couple of the really good achievements they had uh I was able Maggie Maggie and I were both able to win our heats of the miles So that was pretty fun But later that night we went to Tadashi for sushi And so we’re just we’re sitting there we’re getting dinner and

Vince:

00:45:40.25 – 00:46:06.73

you know lo and behold she’s like oh my gosh Vince that’s Gary Martin I’m like like Gary Martin from like Archbishop Wood being like the only Pennsylvania High school to break four minutes in the mile And she was like yeah and he was just there with his family and his uh he’s running at the University of Virginia now He was also at the track meet and uh you know running stupid fast So we ran and ran into him there and

Vince:

00:46:07.11 – 00:46:20.63

uh you know he was with his family so he didn’t like bother him or anything But I was just like this is so cool Like normally when I’m in a room or like a restaurant or something I’m like oh I’m probably like the fastest person here in terms of like running a

Andrew:

00:46:20.63 – 00:46:21.88

 mile

Vince:

00:46:21.94 – 00:46:34.23

And I’m like I know I’m not here This kid ran 3 57 in high school and freshman in college here in 1 50 point oh five and the 800 indoor at Penn State which

Vince:

00:46:34.41 – 00:46:46.93

if you’re even if you’re in the one forties like for outdoor that’s really stupid Good And the fact that he’s almost doing that as a freshman indoor is just like like mind blowing like he is

Vince:

00:46:47.49 – 00:47:10.97

so fast like like 3 57 in the mile out of high school Like that is just incredible But kind of one of those cool cool Uh you know Pennsylvania history facts Like kind of ran into the the only high school Pennsylvania high school to break four minutes in the mile So that was pretty cool And something we got to experience uh living in State College just one of the joys of living here Uh things happen

Andrew:

00:47:10.98 – 00:47:14.34

That is neat So kind of a little bit of a starstruck moment

Vince:

00:47:14.7 – 00:47:21.49

Yes Definitely Definitely Really cool Um so any final thoughts before we get out here besides Go Birds

Andrew:

00:47:21.5 – 00:47:40.3

Now man just excited for the next couple of weeks It’s Super Bowl Sunday Can’t really come soon enough I was really really amped up for their game against the 40 niners Like I was listening to go birds I was watching clips of the 2017 season

Andrew:

00:47:40.44 – 00:47:57.68

So just really trying to like not only get myself amped up but also to like calm myself down because I just get so nervous for these late season like late playoff run games So I’m gonna be very anxious for that game to get going so so excited and I think it’s gonna be a great game

Vince:

00:47:58.3 – 00:48:14.45

Yeah I think so too And going against Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs you know it’s gonna be a good game you know he’s going to put points Um I am happy that I don’t have to face uh that Bengals like trio of wide receivers that are just really talented and

Andrew:

00:48:14.45 – 00:48:16.43

 joburg so

Vince:

00:48:16.43 – 00:48:27.87

good and I think they’re Cincinnati’s defense is a little underrated So um you know they have a good running back and Joe Mixon so like I’m kind of happy the Eagles don’t have to go against them and

Vince:

00:48:28.27 – 00:48:51.3

I kind of thought the refs um you know definitely did uh the Chiefs of favor by throwing that flag at the end of the game and giving them the 15 yards They needed to be in field goal range whereas I thought that was a little bit of a week call for like the end of the game like if it was like you know in the third quarter and that happened I’d be like okay like you don’t want things to get out of hand and

Vince:

00:48:51.54 – 00:49:01.77

you know safety with the game on the line Like he got touched with one hand Like I was like kind of a kind of we call what were your thoughts on that uh um late hit

Andrew:

00:49:01.78 – 00:49:17.49

Yeah I mean it was it was it week probably Am I surprised that they called it Not at all You know you’re in Kansas City it’s Patrick Mahomes he’s the best quarterback in the league right now household name

Andrew:

00:49:17.63 – 00:49:38.57

sort of thing He’s getting the Tom Brady treatment right now You know when you’re amazing and you win a bunch of games in electrifying fashion Those are the kinds of calls that you get So I thought it was a really rough break especially after the fact when fans of all different teams kind of come out and say so the NFL can call this but they’re not going to call this for late hit or whatever it was And

Andrew:

00:49:38.7 – 00:50:05.11

I think it was uh Joe Mixon or something down near the goal line and he got like absolutely blasted when he was outside the line and they didn’t call anything So you know the the NFL historically has had a problem with consistency in officiating Um I just think that was just unfortunate series of events that just kind of collided with each other because um yeah Patrick Mahomes is going to get that call 10 times out of 10

Vince:

00:50:05.27 – 00:50:16.68

Yeah it’s really disappointing to like see players get special treatment Like if that was Jalen Hurts would he have gotten it at the end of the game And I feel like you know those running quarterbacks like Jalen they

Andrew:

00:50:16.69 – 00:50:22.51

 don’t this

Vince:

00:50:22.51 – 00:50:32.32

week this week but he doesn’t always And like there’s a history where I was like oh sometimes running quarterbacks will even slide and then they get hit and like nothing happens And

Vince:

00:50:32.5 – 00:50:38.24

you know I think the the inconsistency is what bothers people the most But also like

Vince:

00:50:38.8 – 00:51:01.43

you know when you’re running that fast it is hard to slow down when like a player kind of stops Like I feel like you can almost like you know almost draw the late hits out of balance sometimes because those players are running so fast like you have to go all out sprint or else they’re gonna run up the sideline if you don’t get there So if you go too slow then they’re just going to cut it inside and run it more So it’s like a really difficult

Vince:

00:51:01.99 – 00:51:05.54

thing as a defender you know just to be able to stop on a dime

Andrew:

00:51:06.08 – 00:51:28.88

Absolutely Yeah So I mean when it comes to these kind of bang bang plays like this It’s almost luck in certain cases Like you almost have to like perfectly time when you’re gonna make contact and in a way just hope that the player hadn’t gone out of bounds at that time because if you’re running at you know like 18 20 miles an hour in a certain direction you’re not gonna be able to stop

Vince:

00:51:28.89 – 00:51:35.5

Yeah And like if if someone like lower the shoulder and just like blasting my home and I’d be like okay you’re just an idiot But like

Andrew:

00:51:35.74 – 00:51:36.4

 he

Vince:

00:51:36.4 – 00:51:43.1

just gave him like a little one arm shove and I’m like I think my home is definitely flopped a little on that And

Andrew:

00:51:43.11 – 00:51:43.9

 yeah

Vince:

00:51:43.91 – 00:51:51.06

I don’t know stuff like that and like like end of the game like I think that when you let go as an official and

Andrew:

00:51:51.72 – 00:51:51.91

 you

Vince:

00:51:51.91 – 00:52:20.85

know like if it’s in the if it’s like an early part of the game where it doesn’t matter like you know you throw the flag there Absolutely Because like when it ends the game and I think that game would have been great and over time just watch as a fan So kind of bummed to see that But uh end of the day I think the Chiefs are the team I’m a little less scared of compared to the Bengals I think Joe Burrow is just incredible The talent around him is incredible especially at the skill positions

Vince:

00:52:21.29 – 00:52:36.85

Um so yeah it’ll be it’ll be exciting super bowl can’t get here soon enough It does feel kind of weird because the the Eagles it almost seems like we have like an easy path to get there Like we beat the Giants 38-7

Vince:

00:52:37.44 – 00:52:49.56

Uh you know after they you know did their thing with the Rocky Statue dominated them then the 40 Niners quarterbacks both are injured and they don’t have a guy that can throw the ball and

Vince:

00:52:50.23 – 00:53:19.84

you know it took a while to get going But we eventually you know that game became a blowout and we’re just like I feel like we needed like more of a like you know a trial you know what I mean Like a tough like really tough adversity to overcome to get there Like because that’s that’s typically what Philly does Philly is like an underdog city and the sports are underdogs and then they need to overcome adversity and we haven’t seen that yet Like the university is going to be in the Super bowl So I’m almost a little bit scared

Vince:

00:53:19.99 – 00:53:24.23

like it almost feels like we shouldn’t be there yet Like we should have one more game to win You know what I mean

Andrew:

00:53:24.69 – 00:53:50.43

Traditionally I would agree with you you know kind of that grinding mentality That’s really what made the 2017 team the 2017 team because you know they won by the skin of their teeth against the Atlanta Falcons and then everything just kind of catapulted from there Where I would say we still get that kind of feeling about this game is Patrick Mahomes because this is a generation defining quarterback

Andrew:

00:53:50.58 – 00:54:11.55

a guy who can take just about any receiver make him look awesome can do stuff on the run as a passer that has never been seen before So I think there’s still going to be plenty of feeling on the eagle side that like you know we’re facing this all time great quarterback already even though he is very young

Andrew:

00:54:11.73 – 00:54:24.67

Um so I think they’re still going to come out with that edge and I think that there’s gonna be a lot of talk about how the Eagles had a relatively easier path to the Super Bowl than the Chiefs because you know the two quarterbacks

Vince:

00:54:24.67 – 00:54:25.74

 going down

Andrew:

00:54:25.89 – 00:54:47.77

Yeah that I mean that’s extremely true and the two quarterbacks going down against for the 40 Niners I mean that’s just like a freak thing but it’s football like Hassan Reddick did exactly what he is trained to do He did exactly what every other defender in his position uh does which is go after the football and he did it And it was just like a freak thing How many times

Andrew:

00:54:47.97 – 00:55:12.57

how many times do you see that exact same play And the quarterback does not suffer a U C L tear like that It’s just a freak thing obviously wish it didn’t happen because personally I was I was excited to see how this team was going to do against a hot rookie like Brock Purdy So you know it was kind of a shame for all football fans but that’s just like kind of the deal in football sometimes So you know I think that the Eagles are gonna have

Andrew:

00:55:12.58 – 00:55:31.29

have a little bit of a fire under them Um just kind of hearing about how like oh you didn’t have a true path to the Super Bowl or whatever even though I mean they beat the brakes off of a hot and fully healthy Giants team but it was still the giant So I think they’re still gonna hear a lot of that chatter and I think they’re still going to come out with that edge

Vince:

00:55:31.3 – 00:55:37.18

and that’s why that’s why I think they need like whenever they’re favored to win they never win So like I like us being the underdog

Vince:

00:55:37.19 – 00:55:49.68

How cool would it be after like not getting any Super Bowls to have our Super Bowls over Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes who at the end of the day might be like the two best quarterbacks of all time in the NFL

Andrew:

00:55:49.68 – 00:56:01.85

Yeah it’s a weird thing I mean even dating back to 2004 when they first played tom in the Super Bowl I mean the Eagles just seem to have a thing where they like to play generational quarterbacks in the championship game

Vince:

00:56:01.86 – 00:56:05.52

Yeah And I kind of feel like the A F C

Vince:

00:56:05.89 – 00:56:21.07

has most of the better quarterbacks but like the NFC seems to have like the better like defenses and like overall rosters like the 49 Ers roster is really good Like can you imagine if they had a healthy quarterback that would have been a really tough game for the Eagles and like the

Andrew:

00:56:21.07 – 00:56:22.73

 Eagles have been

Vince:

00:56:22.73 – 00:56:33.27

awesome really good offensive line good players around Jalen um Cowboys really good defense you know solid skill position players good offensive line

Vince:

00:56:33.63 – 00:56:42.16

like you know so I feel like we’re kind of more like overall roster pretty good but like in the A F C it’s just like man these quarterbacks are amazing these young quarterbacks

Andrew:

00:56:42.99 – 00:56:52.87

I mean that’s 100% true but you know it’s as we’ve seen in many many situations the defense can overcome

Andrew:

00:56:53.03 – 00:57:15.2

a really good quarterback I mean look at when Peyton Manning got onto the Broncos broke a ton of records for their franchise with all those skill position players and stuff like that And then they played the legion of boom in the Super Bowl and he looks like an average Joe Yeah Patrick Mahomes who as we just said is amazing like you know it’s able to do stuff that no other quarterback can do

Andrew:

00:57:15.36 – 00:57:30.52

Um some members of their offensive line gets hurt they go up against Tom Brady’s buccaneers who have just an absolute high flying defense They put him in a hurt locker for 60 minutes So I think that if the position groups

Andrew:

00:57:31.07 – 00:57:58.79

on the Eagles side come out if they come out the way that we know that they can in certain spots I actually like that match up you know I just think that like we just kind of talked about with the 40 Niners I think you know Hassan Reddick is gonna have to continue to play out of his mind He’s gonna have to harass Patrick Mahomes They can’t lose contain on him and let him go out and do his you know his black magic on the run and stuff like that So we’ll see man But yeah it is funny though how like

Andrew:

00:57:59.03 – 00:58:10.3

the Eagles can’t get like uh like a like a rex grossman or something on the other side of quarterback They have to get this just absolutely insanely talented guy Yeah

Vince:

00:58:10.31 – 00:58:20.13

Because we got Tom Brady twice We got my homes now you know who they had in 1980 when Jaws took them to the Super Bowl but they do

Andrew:

00:58:20.13 – 00:58:25.13

not Yeah Well I know they lost to the Raiders So I don’t know who is the quarter

Vince:

00:58:25.37 – 00:58:27.7

Yeah it’s tough to say is we weren’t born yet but it’s

Andrew:

00:58:27.7 – 00:58:30.07

really like Kenny Stabler or something like that

Vince:

00:58:30.45 – 00:59:00.3
