Welcome back to the Nittany Blues podcast Today we are here to recap Penn State’s 83 to 61 victory over the Michigan wolverines It was the largest win in program history over Michigan the largest

Vince:

00:00:17.68 – 00:00:28.17

crowd in the B J C This season It was thought night lots of things to celebrate and be happy about Maggie What were your initial thoughts about the game

Maggie:

00:00:28.18 – 00:00:45.76

Yeah that was just such a crazy game to watch I think going into it neither one of us expected that that would be the outcome I think we are both expecting to see a really close game that could have gone either way

Maggie:

00:00:46.01 – 00:00:59.15

and to just have Penn State be up on Michigan early and then just stay on the gas through the second half was pretty exciting Not really something we’ve seen from this team so far this year

Vince:

00:00:59.16 – 00:01:11.67

Yeah And it is really difficult to sweep team in the big 10 with a conference is good But my premium prediction I have something by two not 22 And honestly with the way this game went

Vince:

00:01:11.92 – 00:01:22.94

uh really Penn State did not take their pedal off the gas in the last 10 minutes You’re looking at a 30 to 40 point victory not 22 So uh you know kudos to

Vince:

00:01:23.08 – 00:01:45.18

Penn State They were the more physical team today after the you know really disappointing loss to Rutgers Coach Cruz kind of calling out these guys and said hey guys we played soft we got manhandled We talked about how they got outrebounded by 15 However completely different story tonight Uh in this first game against Michigan Michigan

Vince:

00:01:45.31 – 00:02:02.0

really won the battle of the Glass against Penn State One of the big areas that Penn State won this game was the Glass They outrebounded Michigan 34 to 26 when they got a 71 guy like Hunter Dickinson that is quite the accomplishment

Maggie:

00:02:02.65 – 00:02:22.85

Yeah And I think to the Nittany Lions did a really effective job of double teaming Hunter Dickinson and that just um just shut the Michigan offense down and they were able to scrape together some three point you know perimeter shooting But I think that the

Maggie:

00:02:23.44 – 00:02:33.15

Whatever defensive formula coach Cruz concocted really worked for them and that was something that I really took away because 61 is a pretty low score

Vince:

00:02:33.16 – 00:02:50.72

Yeah and that is and I thought it was a good game plan and I’m typically a really big fan of taking away the other team’s best player make someone else beat you So they did a really good job of double teaming Hunter Dickinson Um he scored uh

Vince:

00:02:50.93 – 00:03:03.9

You know well around 20 points against Penn State in their first matchup and today he was held three for nine for six points Um really they just made him uncomfortable all day long and

Vince:

00:03:04.17 – 00:03:28.92

you know when it for Michigan when it came to those three pointers The only guy that was on was Jet Howard Jet Howard uh kind of went off He had 21 points in 27 minutes 8 13 from the field However no one else really had a huge impact for the wolverines And um you know the b the atmosphere in the B J C Was really electric It was the biggest crowd of the season

Vince:

00:03:29.22 – 00:03:32.83

Uh you know the college kids were making a lot of noise and it was a great time

Maggie:

00:03:32.89 – 00:03:35.2

 Yeah it really was And

Maggie:

00:03:36.05 – 00:04:01.6

I think there’s been some good B J C Karma this weekend because vince and I watched the some of the Penn State wrestling match on friday night and that got us pretty riled up That was fun to watch So I think going into the B J C When Penn State had just secured a big big win over Iowa and wrestling I think we’re amped up going into this game

Vince:

00:04:01.96 – 00:04:26.83

Yeah it was a good weekend for Penn State sports and the B J C Was really good to see the basketball team ride the momentum of the wrestling team and their big win over number two Iowa Another big thing about this game was the ball movement and you know Penn State just knew the ball a lot better kind of like they did earlier in the season Uh you know really when we saw those mid major teams

Vince:

00:04:27.04 – 00:04:52.34

we were moving the ball well getting open threes and shooting them you know well over 40% and that’s when Penn State basketball is at their best and you saw so much ball movement today compared to Penn State’s first matchup against the Wolverines they only had six assists against Michigan and in ANn arbor however tonight they had 20 huge improvement uh you know for the Nittany Lion team

Vince:

00:04:52.48 – 00:05:17.11

uh you know not only moving the ball but really cashing in and hitting those three point opportunities So Penn State shot around 32% in the match up against the Wolverines and they improved that number to 43 at home They were 13 or 30 So those were some great numbers uh you know only had nine turnovers compared to Michigan’s eight But yeah the biggest areas where they improved with the ball movement

Vince:

00:05:17.3 – 00:05:47.29

three point percentage and you know battling Michigan on the glass and when that really important battle And uh you know I think that coach crews did a really nice job um you know getting his team motivated he challenged them and they responded which was great to see And you know I feel like the past couple of weeks we’ve kind of been saying something needs to be changed with his team and they changed the starting lineup tonight We saw

Vince:

00:05:47.64 – 00:06:13.19

Caleb Dorsey make a return to the starting lineup he was there earlier in the season but kind of had some time off He may have been dealing with an injury And you saw Mikey hen uh the sixth year senior instead of cabbage i at the center position and man and Mikey have a game He was four for four from the field Really efficient 10 points two rebounds three assists

Vince:

00:06:13.35 – 00:06:36.41

Probably would have been 12 if he didn’t get that one ticky tack file basket But man good game for him And it seems like this lineup really put a spark into Penn State and their team the ball moved really well What are your thoughts on the change to the starting lineup And do you think that Penn State should use this lineup going forward

Maggie:

00:06:36.71 – 00:06:43.57

Yeah I mean I was a little surprised to see Mikey Hen starting I think he’s

Maggie:

00:06:44.08 – 00:07:05.29

he’s been coming off the bench nicely and being really consistent on defense Um but I think this was a game tonight where I was like wow I’m I’m seeing him offensively and defensively in a way that I hadn’t up until this point in this season And those those sneaky threes were pretty sweet

Vince:

00:07:05.51 – 00:07:33.72

Yeah And it’s great having guys like Mikey head and Caleb Dorsey who can shoot threes just as well as uh you know lundy and Pickett and funk similar percentage And when you have five guys that can shoot the three that spaces the floor really well And it also makes Jalen Pickett’s job a little bit easier to operate in the paint and man he had a good day as well 10 for 17 from the field 25 points eight rebounds eight assists you know

Vince:

00:07:34.24 – 00:07:52.44

only a couple of boards and a couple of short of a triple double So pick had another huge performance today Uh you know lots of threes you had four threes from Seth blondie you had four threes from Andrew Funk uh two from Mikey hen

Maggie:

00:07:53.43 – 00:07:53.77

 two

Vince:

00:07:53.77 – 00:08:08.98

from Pick like it was just three points Yeah Uh you know even a crazy one from miles Dredd with the shot clock going down with less than two seconds he kinda just contorted his body and somehow got the shot off and nothing but net and it was just

Vince:

00:08:09.39 – 00:08:34.74

you know the 1st 10 15 minutes was really competitive But that run by Penn State where they started knock down the threes to make it a 17 point disadvantage for the wolverines That was really when Penn State made the run and that’s when they pulled away in this game However we have seen Penn State blow some big leads this season and it’s you know something the program has done

Vince:

00:08:35.17 – 00:08:46.67

Uh you know a few times this year and a lot last year What were your thoughts coming out of the half And how impressed with were you that Penn State was able to play a complete 40 minutes

Maggie:

00:08:46.68 – 00:08:55.45

Yeah I mean when we were going into the half half time I was kind of like like that was a fun first half and now it’s all gonna

Maggie:

00:08:56.11 – 00:09:02.44

slip away from us And I I will admit that I was a little skeptical I’ve

Maggie:

00:09:02.98 – 00:09:06.73

I’ve seen Penn State um you know really

Maggie:

00:09:07.3 – 00:09:25.26

be playing well in the first half and then it’s just a different team that walks out of the locker room for the second half But that was not the case tonight and I was glad to be so pleasantly surprised So it’s it’s pretty amazing two things Both one when you like can

Maggie:

00:09:25.91 – 00:09:41.48

Come out of the locker room the same name you walked in there as and it’s amazing what not having a 12 minute scoring drought will do for your um your chances of victory against Michigan

Vince:

00:09:41.49 – 00:09:55.32

Yeah so last year when they played at home you might hear us bring this up a lot I feel like we bring it up almost every week But yeah when you’re not I was watching that game last year against the wolverines that they were just dominating in the B J C And

Vince:

00:09:55.74 – 00:10:17.47

huge lead I sent a picture to my some of my friends and you know it was like Michigan still sucks and then we didn’t score a point for 12 minutes after I sent that picture so did not send any pictures to my friends today Just enjoyed the game and really you know with Penn State having these leads at halftime those first five min

Vince:

00:10:17.48 – 00:10:38.13

or forced four minutes to the media time out are so important when you’re coming out of the half that just sets the tone for the rest of the game You can either you know put a team away or you can let them claw back into it and build their confidence So Penn State did a really good job out of the half and you know really there was nothing that Michigan could do

Vince:

00:10:38.32 – 00:10:50.33

I remember there was some kids who just were sitting in like the isle on the stairs they weren’t in their seats but they were like making jokes being like hey the scores are first it’s 63 to 36

Maggie:

00:10:50.34 – 00:10:51.35

 you

Vince:

00:10:51.35 – 00:10:56.0

Know that 27 point deficit and if you were to tell me that would happen before the game

Vince:

00:10:56.26 – 00:11:16.36

I would have told you not a snowball’s chance in hell But really uh impressive performance The lead did build to 31 at one point and then Penn State kind of stopped running their offense the way they had been in the 1st 30 minutes of the game You almost saw Jalen Pickett just operating in the paint and

Vince:

00:11:16.74 – 00:11:33.52

um you know it looked like he was just trying to get his score up and uh it seems like his teammates were just content to let him do that And there wasn’t as much of the ball movement and the offense and later minutes of the game But you know Penn State played good defense and did a really nice job Closing out the game

Maggie:

00:11:34.52 – 00:11:36.36

 Yeah I

Maggie:

00:11:36.94 – 00:11:41.85

I feel like we don’t we honestly don’t have a ton to say because that was just like

Maggie:

00:11:42.36 – 00:12:02.21

so exciting and so unexpected And usually there’s a lot of you know not a lot but usually there’s things that we can point you it’s like oh maybe that could have been better That was something that didn’t go to the Lions way or that they didn’t have a response to But I feel like you know notes Yeah

Vince:

00:12:02.22 – 00:12:09.39

no notes and uh you know I thought them mixing it up was a good thing for Penn State They needed to do something to

Vince:

00:12:09.64 – 00:12:16.09

kind of spice it up and mix it up And I think this is something they should use until it doesn’t

Maggie:

00:12:16.09 – 00:12:16.81

 work

Vince:

00:12:16.82 – 00:12:28.32

And I thought it was kind of smart of them to um bring cam winter in off of the bench He’s just been going through kind of a slump lately and

Vince:

00:12:28.67 – 00:12:55.86

You know I just think giving him a little bit of a mental break and having him go against the other team’s twos to try to build some confidence I think that was you know smart coaching decision He did still get 23 minutes tonight which is good only only one of two from the field but didn’t really hurt the team There got three rebounds four assists So it’s not like he was out there doing nothing He was making big contributions to the team and uh really impressed with his performance

Vince:

00:12:56.12 – 00:13:19.25

But yeah Mikey hen you know he looks like he belongs out there and only 24 minutes to get 10 points two rebounds three assists Like he’s uh his basketball like he was really high on the offensive end and uh you know you saw him being in the right spot down in the low block Jalen Pickett talked about how he really liked how john hera always seemed to be right where he wanted him

Vince:

00:13:19.42 – 00:13:47.95

And that’s something he’s been struggling with CUBA is he’s just not in those same spots of the six year guy finding the spots the empty spots in the defense Uh he did really well there and he’s also making some really high level passes and you know if you watch football in the NFL you talk about you know getting the ball in the small window and the window being small He made some passes like that that were really impressive and gave Penn State some big scoring opportunities and

Vince:

00:13:48.11 – 00:14:13.72

he was part of why this offense is so successful He can shoot the three which is huge Uh Dorsey can also you know hit three so he’s a threat from there So I really like this this group of five and then you bring miles in off the bench We we we know can shoot So this is a lineup that I really like that Penn State experimented with this and I think they should roll with it going forward

Maggie:

00:14:13.73 – 00:14:17.1

Yeah I think it was really effective

Maggie:

00:14:17.84 – 00:14:22.31

I’m intrigued to see what they’re gonna deploy against Purdue

Vince:

00:14:22.32 – 00:14:47.53

Yeah and it it is going to be kind of interesting to see what they do Uh another thing I do want to talk about before we do go over to Purdue is um something that I noticed what that was kind of fun is that the officials seem to let the players play like it was it was called very fair both ways Like you know there was a little pushing and shoving at times and

Vince:

00:14:47.89 – 00:15:08.45

you know they allowed the players to be a little more physical than you know some of the other officials we had and that just made the game enjoyable to watch There was not that many fouls There was only nine personal fouls and Penn State in the game and only eight for Michigan So the fact that the officials kind of let the players play made it enjoyable to watch But you know

Vince:

00:15:08.78 – 00:15:23.56

Also you know it’s nice not to see those ticky tack fouls called every you know 30 seconds What were what were your thoughts on the officiating tonight And do you think the officiating and the officials letting them play a little bit more physical played into the favor of Penn State

Maggie:

00:15:24.38 – 00:15:31.39

I mean I don’t I wouldn’t say that that is like what made the difference between um

Vince:

00:15:31.4 – 00:15:39.6

It didn’t matter if there was a three-point line or there was like 90s basketball where they’re like super physical like Penn State would have won no matter what

Maggie:

00:15:39.61 – 00:15:42.45

Yeah I mean I think it is

Vince:

00:15:43.15 – 00:15:43.37

 it

Maggie:

00:15:43.37 – 00:15:53.56

is nice to let the the game flow and I think sometimes officials are maybe a little more heavy handed with the calls Um

Maggie:

00:15:54.1 – 00:16:08.36

I said my dad came down and was able to watch the game with us and I remember saying to him like Penn State usually has a lot more fouls Like they’re usually in the double bonus by now and they have like zero fouls

Maggie:

00:16:08.68 – 00:16:16.46

And you know it was great You were able to leave the B J c at like 145 and make it one time to watch the Eagles

Vince:

00:16:16.47 – 00:16:33.12

Oh yeah we had to get home to watch the birds Maybe the officials were eagles fans and they want to do so But yeah I liked it You know it’s kind of annoying when they call those touch fouls where it didn’t really make a difference on the play And

Vince:

00:16:33.37 – 00:16:46.81

yeah you want to see the best players on the floor as well too So it’s like no fun when you know the other team’s best players in foul trouble and same goes for years Uh you know Mikey hen is a guy that plays a little more physical and

Vince:

00:16:47.36 – 00:17:12.31

you know a lot of his his fouls are typically from you know being physical and pushing and shoving in the low post But I like that style of basketball I’m a low post guy That’s what I love to see I love to see that physical battle So you know I think that played into his favor of his game a little bit How do you think that he’s going to fare against Zack Edie this week Because he he did pretty good against Hunter Dickinson He

Maggie:

00:17:12.31 – 00:17:13.41

 did I mean

Vince:

00:17:14.25 – 00:17:15.03

 oh

Maggie:

00:17:15.09 – 00:17:20.74

is that oh my gosh Hunter Dickinson didn’t play the whole game So I do think we need

Vince:

00:17:20.74 – 00:17:21.12

 a

Maggie:

00:17:21.7 – 00:17:22.33

 acknowledge

Vince:

00:17:22.33 – 00:17:23.77

 that at a

Maggie:

00:17:23.77 – 00:17:45.93

Certain point Michigan was like ask your it were going to arrest some of our starters let some younger guys get some minutes So it’s not like Michigan was necessarily on the gas for all 40 minutes So in to some extent you know they kind of neutralize themselves But I do think that

Vince:

00:17:46.59 – 00:17:46.78

 I

Maggie:

00:17:46.78 – 00:18:14.92

think the early stages of this game would be a good good confidence booster and I think a good indicator that the Penn State defense especially this double team is really effective I will say that I think produce better team than Michigan and I think Zach e V is a better player than Hunter Dickinson So it’s like you know I don’t know just how much how effectively Penn State can scale this setup to a team that is

Maggie:

00:18:15.52 – 00:18:20.06

um just better on every level but I’m excited to see him try

Maggie:

00:18:21.41 – 00:18:22.03

 Yeah

Vince:

00:18:22.73 – 00:18:34.51

Yeah And before we get into our Purdue review I think we should award some players of the game So who do you feel like is deserving of the Mahoney Mahler award

Maggie:

00:18:34.52 – 00:18:38.08

Well I’m gonna give it to Mikey Hen

Maggie:

00:18:38.71 – 00:18:52.77

and I know that you probably were also thinking that you would want to give it to him Um and I he’s someone that we’ve sort of seen maybe on the periphery a little bit this season He’s been really consistent on defense but I think this game

Maggie:

00:18:53.27 – 00:19:19.69

we we saw that defense defensive consistency and then also a real emergence offensively And so if we can get to the point where we can count on him to put up 10 points a game that is you know that’s 10 points The Penn State probably was not getting before if he’s not getting these kind of minutes So um yeah bullish on Mikey hen excited to see what he can do and I think too

Maggie:

00:19:19.85 – 00:19:32.28

You know as we move into the end of the season and big 10 conference play conference tournament um that his maturity and his experience I think will really be an asset

Vince:

00:19:33.03 – 00:19:52.1

Yeah And I think that’s really important to that You do have another weapon out there scoring when you have cam winter and a little bit of a slump and he hasn’t been scoring as much in the past couple of weeks and you have caba who doesn’t do too much offensively uh you know it’s it’s really really tough which is just

Vince:

00:19:52.47 – 00:20:17.08

have pick and funk and lundy being the focal point of the offense it definitely makes your job that much easier when you have the threat of scoring at so many different levels and you know Penn State did have a little bit of an advantage today And the fact that Michigan actually played Purdue thursday night so they only had two days of rest before traveling over to play Penn State whereas our game was on Tuesday

Vince:

00:20:17.21 – 00:20:38.65

so we did get that extra two days of rest So you know Michigan might have been a little beat up beat up from Purdue and you know when you’re playing the number one team in the nation you’re always going to be up for that So you know they might have had a little bit of a hangover But yeah if you were to tell me that Hunter Dickinson was only going to play 24 minutes today I’d be like if this is not going to be a good day

Maggie:

00:20:38.65 – 00:20:38.97

 for

Vince:

00:20:39.07 – 00:20:43.51

But you know 30 minutes into the game you know

Vince:

00:20:43.88 – 00:21:09.99

Coach Howard just said okay we’re shutting this down this is you know this is bad this is embarrassing I just want to get on a plane right back to ANn Arbor and try to figure things out for the next one So Michigan was just checked out 30 minutes into the game and you know it was on the lines and you know this game was so much fun with that being said I do think I have to give my Fidelity Fighter award to Jalen Pickett

Vince:

00:21:10.27 – 00:21:30.86

34 minutes 25 points eight rebounds eight assists He did everything for this team Um his shooting percentage uh probably would have been higher if he wasn’t taking as many shots at the end and they were moving the ball around more like they did in the 1st 30 minutes So he had a spectacular game today and

Vince:

00:21:31.06 – 00:21:54.04

there was a Michigan fan sitting by me and he was saying that we got to find a way to stop 22 it’s kind of funny because when Jalen was on the bench in the first half that’s kind of when Penn State went on that three point barrage and really started to widen the gap and I was like man we’re gonna like how good is this gonna be when pitt gets back out there and you know you’d expect Michigan to really

Vince:

00:21:54.64 – 00:22:12.66

cut that cut that lead with pick it on the bench and you know that wasn’t the case at Penn State just got better almost So you know he had a great game guy stepped up and hit shots when he was on the bench so you know that was huge So yeah that’s my Fidelity Fighter and for my bird brawler

Vince:

00:22:13.97 – 00:22:39.22

you gotta love Andrew funk like he is so fun to watch when he is on he is just you know something special uh hit some threes today had a nice and one layup where he got fouled and you know he knew the contact was coming and just took the shot got it up with the left hand which you don’t see a lot of guys do you see a lot of guys in there on the left hand side that are right handed they use the right hand for the lip and

Vince:

00:22:39.44 – 00:22:54.45

you know the shot gets blocked or you know they get that shooting arm and then you you can’t score But you know he did a good job using his body to absorb the contact and then use that outside hand to get the layup up So you know really veteran and savvy play by him

Vince:

00:22:55.27 – 00:23:17.5

His performance was really impressive tonight I just hope that he can take the shooting success that he has had inside the B J C Onto the road in West Lafayette next week because we need him to have a big game He was very off against Purdue didn’t have a great shooting night when they played in the Polestar to so you know

Vince:

00:23:17.93 – 00:23:44.52

he’s been great in the B J C And he’s been a big reason for their success Many lines are 11 to 1 at home this year in the B J C So you know if he’s on and he can figure out how to get involved on the road and you know get hot you’re going to see some big things for Penn State for an honorable mention for awards you got to mention Seth Lundy and his performance He had 22 points seven rebounds off of seven and 14 shooting

Vince:

00:23:44.77 – 00:23:59.04

He was also four of nine from the field from three point land just like Andrew funk So he’s performance from Seth lundy as well He’s definitely on an equal tier of you know those other three guys performances for a player in the game

Maggie:

00:23:59.05 – 00:24:02.1

Yeah We don’t ever want to take it for granted

Vince:

00:24:02.11 – 00:24:14.67

Oh never take never take money for granted Yeah He’s also great on the defensive and have a nice block today So you know he is really important I can’t stress that enough

Vince:

00:24:14.94 – 00:24:44.03

But you know moving forward to Purdue this is going to be a 6 30 tip off in what last life I at 6:30 p.m. On a Wednesday night things did not go quite as well for Penn State in the uh you know the first half of the game again for the first round of the cholesterol things went well They kinda were like doing things like banking threes and Jalen Pickett had a nice uh

Vince:

00:24:44.59 – 00:25:11.6

he just almost jumped in there and threw up a circus shot and got that to go in and you know Purdue they were down 6.5 but they took over in the second half and ended up closing out the game 76 63 Uh they were very confident Uh you know they said that Penn State was making some kind of garbage shots essentially And uh you know they said hey we’re playing our game and Edie

Vince:

00:25:12.3 – 00:25:33.86

Had a huge game in this contest he had 30 points against us And then the other two guys that really carried them were Fletcher lawyer and Brandon Smith They were both hot from three point land and they combined for 32 points So when you have those three guys they combined for 63 of produced 76 points

Vince:

00:25:34.19 – 00:25:45.16

So that’s the bulk of their offense or at least how it played out against the Nittany Lions What are some changes that you would like to see as they go on the road to West Lafayette

Maggie:

00:25:45.87 – 00:26:01.32

Well I think that this um this starting lineup that we saw against Michigan I think we should we should give it a try against Purdue you know can’t hurt to see what you know how that plays out I’m

Maggie:

00:26:02.05 – 00:26:08.53

you know I I feel like sometimes and we’ve said this earlier on this podcast is that

Maggie:

00:26:09.26 – 00:26:14.52

there’s sometimes where we can’t necessarily point to what went wrong It’s just like

Vince:

00:26:14.53 – 00:26:16.14

 the vibes were off

Maggie:

00:26:16.15 – 00:26:30.14

or the vibes were on like sometimes this this Penn State team is like we can’t necessarily describe what’s going wrong but things are definitely going wrong So I always feel a little hesitant to

Maggie:

00:26:30.73 – 00:26:43.19

predict what will work because sometimes it’s really like huh I guess this is working or huh this is just really not working at all but it’s hard to put your finger on what exactly is the issue So

Vince:

00:26:43.81 – 00:26:44.01

 you

Maggie:

00:26:44.01 – 00:26:47.61

know all that to say I who knows what we’ll say

Vince:

00:26:48.24 – 00:27:14.39

Yeah we we don’t really know and I think that our best shot was to get them in the Palestra in Philly Um you know there there are a couple of things that give me a bit of optimism Purdue on average only shoots 33% from the field from behind the arc And when they played Penn State in the Palestra they shot at a 44% clip So you know that’s higher than their average So that gives me some optimism

Vince:

00:27:14.97 – 00:27:43.12

Another thing that gives me some optimism is re balance I think Penn State can do better in that area They did get out rebounded 33-22 but we we saw them turning around like Michigan beat them up on the boards in their first matchup But Penn State uh you know coach crews called them soft and they responded to that and they played tougher They played more physical and um they outrebounded a Michigan team that was bigger than them today And

Vince:

00:27:43.27 – 00:28:05.73

these rebounds are so important because you cannot give three point shooters like fletcher lawyer and Brandon smith open three point looks off of an offensive rebound that just is not gonna fly They gave up nine against the boilermakers last time they played and you know that gave Purdue some momentum it just

Vince:

00:28:05.97 – 00:28:20.81

drains your energy and your soul when you see another team knocked down a three because you didn’t box out and do your job and rebound and you almost know like hey that shouldn’t have counted We should have rebounded the ball off of their first miss So

Vince:

00:28:21.01 – 00:28:42.48

um that’s an area I’m looking for Penn State to improve along with the three point percentage They did shoot fairly well last time 36% So if they’re around there I think they’ll be okay I think that would be a good number of them The target on the road actually But if we can get there three point percentage down and we can

Vince:

00:28:43.47 – 00:28:50.88

do a little bit that job better job defensively and rebounding and um you know

Vince:

00:28:51.42 – 00:29:17.76

stopping their ball movement They had some really good ball movement against us last week Uh you know last month they got 18 assist we only had 12 So if we can move that number up and you know use our ball movement and find our three point shooters and get them good looks That could make a big difference One thing that did go well for Penn State was turnovers Uh they wanted to turn over about 8 to 11

Vince:

00:29:18.06 – 00:29:47.51

I would like to see you know Seth Lundy and Jalen Pickett really harassing their ball handlers and making them uncomfortable uh as well as double teaming zack E G In the post Like I do not want to see Zach Edie put up 30 points again Like I just want us to harass him all day and have like 10 points he’s gonna get you know he’s going to make some tough shots but if we can you know just just force him farther away from the low post and double team immediately when he gets there and

Vince:

00:29:47.67 – 00:30:17.18

you know make somebody else beat you And I think this is like that’s the key to uh giving us a chance And another thing that might be beneficial is offensively if we can get eating a little bit of foul trouble if we can make this a bit of a uh you know more of a track meet whether we’re moving up up and down the court a little bit faster maybe that could tire him out or you know removing the bottom Mikey hen

Vince:

00:30:17.43 – 00:30:44.68

and Zach is gonna have to come out from the paint and he’s gonna have to be ready to block that shot because Mikey has shown that he can knock down those shots So the more we get him moving on the defensive end and trying to wear him out and you know even forcing Coach Painter to make some substitutions and that allows us to you know gone some score runs when he’s on the bench and you know that will make it easier to get rebounds on the defensive end

Vince:

00:30:44.88 – 00:31:04.04

So if we can you know from either a conditioning standpoint or Jalen Pickett um going to work and drawing some fouls in the paint or maybe a Seth lundy drawing some fouls on him I think that is the key uh to be this team and there’s only been one team to do It was Rutgers So

Vince:

00:31:04.23 – 00:31:16.37

um they kind of laid out the blueprint is get zack et off the floor find a way So you know whether it’s by moving the ball well or getting him in foul trouble I think that is the key to winning this basketball game

Maggie:

00:31:16.38 – 00:31:21.15

Yeah So that’s your final score prediction

Vince:

00:31:22.07 – 00:31:27.6

So final score prediction before we do that I think we need to have a Communion prediction

Maggie:

00:31:28.75 – 00:31:29.2

 will

Vince:

00:31:29.2 – 00:31:42.73

Do I’ll go first So that you have some time to think about yours I think you will see a triple double from Jalen Pickett it’ll be 20 points 10 rebounds 10 assists

Maggie:

00:31:43.61 – 00:31:50.6

Well I actually I was thinking of mine so I was ready to go and I was going to say double double for Mikey hen

Vince:

00:31:50.61 – 00:31:59.13

Double double for Mikey Hen I would like to see it So I’m assuming points is one of them Are you seeing 10 assists 10 rebounds

Maggie:

00:31:59.14 – 00:32:00.73

I was gonna go with rebounds

Vince:

00:32:00.74 – 00:32:02.92

 10 rebounds from Mikey Hen

Vince:

00:32:03.26 – 00:32:14.34

Going against 7 6 Zacky If he does that Penn State cannot lose this basketball game If he’s getting 10 rebounds that means things are going very bad for Purdue

Maggie:

00:32:14.35 – 00:32:18.51

I’m just gonna speak it into existence Put it out there

Vince:

00:32:18.52 – 00:32:19.68

 All right So

Vince:

00:32:20.38 – 00:32:23.17

final score prediction What do you got

Maggie:

00:32:23.86 – 00:32:24.94

 Um

Maggie:

00:32:25.68 – 00:32:27.09

 I’m gonna go

Maggie:

00:32:28.12 – 00:32:36.28

Penn State 75 per do 74

Vince:

00:32:36.29 – 00:32:45.04

So one point upset on the road over the boilermakers or maybe we’ll call them the boilermakers

Maggie:

00:32:45.29 – 00:32:51.36

boilermakers Oh so original I don’t think I’ve predicted Penn State to lose once

Vince:

00:32:52.05 – 00:33:02.11

Yeah You have not predicted them You’ve been a little overly optimistic I would say However I do think that this is

Vince:

00:33:02.68 – 00:33:29.22

just a team that this is kind of the one team in the big 10 where you don’t want to see on your schedule twice you know produce a really talented team But when I saw them playing the palestra it didn’t feel like they were unbeatable necessarily It felt like in the second half just a lot of things didn’t go our way So things like officiating not hitting shots Um for some reason we weren’t doubling zack pd and

Vince:

00:33:29.4 – 00:33:54.2

you know he just took over the game So I’m really hoping that the lines do learn from some of the mistakes they made and against this Purdue team and you know hopefully we can do a better job against guys like lawyer and smith on the perimeter lawyer just kind of exploded in that second half and we didn’t have an answer to stop him defensively they do have a couple other guys the forward first

Vince:

00:33:54.4 – 00:34:16.13

and Newman the guard who can also shoot at a solid percentage of around 34% So you know this team is three point shooters and Zach et in the post So you know I think that hey we got to make them beat us from the perimeter and hey let’s make this a three point shootout and I mean the best three point shooting team

Vince:

00:34:17.09 – 00:34:35.3

But uh final score I’m not gonna take them at the Alliance for the upset Um I am optimistic that it could be a little bit of a closer game but I’m gonna go with boiler Makers 74 and Penn State 65

Maggie:

00:34:35.89 – 00:34:37.08

 Oh yeah

Vince:

00:34:37.09 – 00:35:01.69

yeah Purdue is a is a really good defensive team that really disciplined I think coach painter will have them ready and they were in a dogfight last time So I think they’ll bring their a game and this will be a tough road loss for Penn State But after this pretty match up their schedule does get a little bit easier Will be going against Nebraska They’ll get Wisconsin at home So you know I think there are better things to come for the lions

Maggie:

00:35:01.7 – 00:35:05.66

Great Well we’ll find out on Wednesday

Vince:
