Maggie:

00:00:13.03 – 00:00:28.99

Well good to get a win against Nebraska is you know the bar that we had walking into this game So glad that Penn State was able to bounce back um with this win after a tough loss to Wisconsin

Maggie:

00:00:29.22 – 00:00:52.31

And last week on the pod we were we were saying going into this that we were really not sure which way this Nebraska team was going to go They had been really hot had pulled out some kind of surprising upsets Penn State was also kind of in the same boat So it seemed like you know Penn State’s getting hot Nebraska was cooling down and they were able to take the win

Vince:

00:00:52.88 – 00:01:15.38

Yeah And this this was a kind of a unique game and the fact that there were a lot of runs going each way Penn State opened It opened the game really hot They hit three threes including and Andrew funk four point play on the very first possession of the game So Penn State got up 10 to nothing very quick Uh you know really within just a little over two minutes into the game

Vince:

00:01:15.59 – 00:01:43.49

Nebraska calls time out and then we had an infamous you know scoring drought So in Nebraska in the next five minutes kind of clawed their way back They were down 13 to 10 at one point in the first half Uh at the end of the first half you know kind of like what we’ve been seeing It seems that every game Penn State has a six point lead at halftime It happened against Purdue it happened against Wisconsin Indiana was a nine point lead at half

Vince:

00:01:43.65 – 00:01:55.49

So you know indiana they really showed out and had a good second half but against Purdue and Wisconsin uh didn’t go so well in the second half So

Vince:

00:01:56.06 – 00:02:14.15

The first half very little scoring a lot of defense Uh second half completely opposite that both teams really started to heat up offensively The Cornhuskers came out of the half really strong They went on a 10-4 run The game was tied up 33-33 early in the second half

Vince:

00:02:14.32 – 00:02:43.15

And I remember saying oh no not again We get a nice you know nice lead into the first half The other team makes a run and then we just aren’t able to respond and fight back to that run However Penn State did turn it around once the other team caught up and tied it they went on a little bit of a run on their own and late in the second half around the eight minute mark they started getting it to around double digits around that 8 to 10 point margin

Vince:

00:02:43.35 – 00:02:57.35

And you know they were able to pull away and get the victory and end up being a 76-65 big win for the Nittany Lions and really uh fixing what they needed to fix which was closing out a big game

Maggie:

00:02:57.36 – 00:03:12.4

Yeah I agree I think we have to give Penn State credit for winning but I do think that we have to make sure that we we emphasize that Nebraska missed a lot of foul shots and that

Maggie:

00:03:12.94 – 00:03:35.56

You know if you’re if you’re being called for fouls against a team that has a much higher free throw shooting percentage those extra I mean I don’t I don’t have the stat there So Nebraska was 13 for 24 from the free throw line So that you know that difference right There could have made this game a lot closer

Maggie:

00:03:35.95 – 00:03:51.41

So you know at the end of the day it’s a win But I think that there’s some things in there where it’s like wow if this was a team that was you know maybe playing a little tougher may be able to make more of their foul shots that we we might not have gotten that win

Vince:

00:03:51.42 – 00:03:59.13

Yeah early in the contest and kind of midway through the second half you could see when Penn State got that 10 point lead

Vince:

00:03:59.29 – 00:04:24.15

Uh if Nebraska had just been a better free throw shooting team it would have been a much closer game 54% is not very good I know my eighth grade basketball coach would not have been very happy with those numbers but Nebraska has not really been a great free throw shooting team throughout the course of the season So really nothing new for them They shot around their three point percentage for the game There are six of 22 hit 27%

Vince:

00:04:24.46 – 00:04:40.28

Penn State overall had a really good shooting night 11-30 for 37% Uh kind of right around that season average for them They were pretty good from the line and and hit hit some at the end when they were being intentionally found 79% 1114

Vince:

00:04:40.96 – 00:04:56.35

Uh really good rebounding performance I thought that Derek Walker was going to be a problem on the glass However Penn State held their own They outrebounded Nebraska 32-31 Um however fouls uh

Vince:

00:04:56.91 – 00:05:00.98

Gotta get fixed 22 fouls to 12

Vince:

00:05:01.55 – 00:05:28.5

Uh that’s almost double the fouls on Penn State compared to Nebraska’s However I do think there were some calls like a couple offensive fouls on Jalen Pickett and I thought they were kind of weak calls personally Now he he does sometimes get away with wrapping away his off arm and kind of hooking the defender He does do that sometimes and gets away with it However the times he did get called

Vince:

00:05:28.67 – 00:05:45.15

I really didn’t look major to me Um so yeah he had a couple calls go against him He had four fouls today Um so he was one of the guys in foul trouble also had Seth Lundy in foul trouble early in the first half and

Vince:

00:05:45.98 – 00:06:12.02

yeah so overall Evan Mahaffey got five so that was not perfect But uh yeah so I gotta get fixed Um I don’t know if it’s the officials got to do a better job or Penn State has to do more I feel like when I watch sometimes though uh we got kind of get called for those ticky tack fouls whereas the other team kind of gets away with What are your thoughts on that

Maggie:

00:06:12.03 – 00:06:13.25

 I mean

Maggie:

00:06:13.99 – 00:06:21.99

I don’t want to like blame the outcome of the game on the officials one way or another I think you know I truly believe that they are

Maggie:

00:06:22.5 – 00:06:26.4

trying their best and I think there’s you know that

Maggie:

00:06:27.04 – 00:06:28.62

it seems kind of like a

Maggie:

00:06:29.25 – 00:06:58.73

a lame or a tired excuse to always blame losing or difficulties on the officials you know at a certain point that’s you know they’re the ones in control of the game Yeah things may not always seem fair but you just have to work with it at a certain point and you have to control what you are able to control So you know it is a factor but it’s not the only factor that I think sometimes gets in the way of Penn State winning because you know sometimes they do a good enough job of getting in their own way

Maggie:

00:06:58.93 – 00:07:02.35

that the officials don’t really make that much of a difference

Vince:

00:07:02.87 – 00:07:27.92

Yeah and and it’s one of those things if you want to win by two you got to be better by 10 and Penn State has not been better by 10 in those situations However you know when Coach Shrewsbury is making the point of it that’s when I’m a little more cognizant and looking for it early in the season when you didn’t really hear those comments from coach screws I I did never really thought about the officiate and didn’t think about it once Uh

Vince:

00:07:28.73 – 00:07:53.32

Yeah but we’ll see how it goes and if they start getting more calls going their way because they have a big game coming up against Rutgers and Rutgers is not going to shoot 54% from the free throw line while they’re they’re kind of more of an average team from behind the line at 74% Uh you know they’re gonna be quite the handful if we you know can’t do a better job defensively

Vince:

00:07:53.56 – 00:07:54.43

 But

Maggie:

00:07:54.44 – 00:08:03.01

I feel like we we started out on a lot of the negatives of the game So maybe we can steer back into some of the positive things that we

Vince:

00:08:03.01 – 00:08:04.06

 thought of course

Maggie:

00:08:04.07 – 00:08:07.6

well for the game So vince what was a highlight for you

Vince:

00:08:07.61 – 00:08:20.086

highlight for me was Andrew Funk he was spectacular tonight in the first half He had over half the team’s points So he was really on tonight And I remember we talk

Vince:

00:08:20.096 – 00:08:40.182

about that statistic when Andrew Funk scores 10 points or more The outcome is usually good for Penn State So he was in double digits in the first half So really great start He finished the game with 23 points was eight of 13 from the field five of 10 from three So gotta love it How to steal on defense couple rebounds Really good before

Vince:

00:08:40.192 – 00:09:09.37

By Andrew Funk Jalen Pickett really solid performance as well had a double double 12 points 13 rebounds five assists However kind of uncharacteristic performance as he recorded seven turnovers I don’t know if they counted some of those offensive fouls as a turnover since the other team got the ball Um yeah so that was kind of unusual cause I don’t necessarily see him like really making that many sloppy passes or getting the ball taken away that much So

Vince:

00:09:09.53 – 00:09:35.07

maybe some of that was attributed to the offensive fouls Uh Seth Lundy wasn’t quite as involved early on Got some foul trouble So he didn’t get quite as many minutes as he normally does but really got hot in the second half He finished with 16 points five attempts from the field three of seven from three So you know those guys all had really good offensive performances We also had

Vince:

00:09:35.3 – 00:09:45.24

a couple of guys back into the line that we haven’t seen in quite some time including Danny johnson Caleb Dorsey Caleb Dorsey actually started off the season

Vince:

00:09:45.93 – 00:10:02.05

at the center position being our starting center before CUba eventually took over and got that job And then we haven’t only seen Caleb for about a month or so and there were some games where he would start and you know play for four or five minutes then cable would go in

Vince:

00:10:02.22 – 00:10:26.44

and then we went to see Caleb Dorsey the rest of the game He always had that you know that one device on his back I think it’s called the viper and it’s either heat or stem stem pad something like that to try to keep the back and the muscles warm Um we did see him with some video tape on his shoulder So Caleb might have been dealing with maybe a bit of a shoulder injury of some sort

Vince:

00:10:26.67 – 00:10:47.64

Darlene johnson was back something I noticed was that he had a brace on one of his knees I think it was left knee But he looked good out there today He got nine minutes had six points to four shooting from the field to three from downtown So you know that’s what you want him to do that that’s his role and uh did a nice job of that tonight

Vince:

00:10:48.34 – 00:11:18.0

and kind of a younger guy who’s gonna have some more minutes Kanye Clary he got 19 minutes tonight Uh 6.3 rebounds three assists Really good performance from the freshman Only one turnover he’s a natural ball handler out there like him and Jalen pickett those are like the two guys when I see them you know dribbling the ball and they’re dribbling quite a bit I I’m very confident that the ball will not get taken away from them

Vince:

00:11:18.16 – 00:11:42.59

Yeah there you no good at avoiding double teams and you know Kanye has a has a lot of twitch to his game and a lot of shiftiness and that that created uh some good opportunities for driving and I think that’s a good thing to have in the offense especially if Pick is on the bench getting a quick breather It’s good to have him there because not we don’t have that many guys that are

Vince:

00:11:42.75 – 00:12:07.18

quite as natural drivers to the basket and when you have those drivers uh you know typically teams will crash the paint a little more and then that will create three point shooting opportunities for Penn State and we have a lot of good shooters so that’s their game and really that’s what we wanna do Penn State did shoot a lot of threes tonight Uh 30 of their 55 shots were from downtown So over half their shots from were from downtown

Vince:

00:12:07.52 – 00:12:19.56

Nebraska did seem fairly content I think they were a little more focused on stopping Jalen Pickett in the paint He was getting double teamed a lot and I think they were content to uh let pence a shoot from behind the arc

Maggie:

00:12:19.57 – 00:12:21.68

 Yeah I agree I think

Maggie:

00:12:22.09 – 00:12:34.12

I also do really want to emphasize Kanye clary because he you know he played a lot of basketball he played what 19 minutes and that’s probably the most we’ve seen him play

Vince:

00:12:34.13 – 00:12:42.68

Yeah he typically has around 8-10 minutes in the past couple of weeks So yeah this is a really big improvement for minute wise for him

Maggie:

00:12:42.69 – 00:12:47.76

Yeah And while he’s out there he’s making a difference He’s not just

Maggie:

00:12:48.06 – 00:13:13.89

you know fiddling around He really is I think we’re starting to see him contribute to the offense and be tough on defense And also I think I think he does a nice job of picking up the tempo a little bit for this Penn State team I think sometimes you know they’re not a team that does a ton of fast breaks and they they do really like to set up their offense and work through

Maggie:

00:13:14.05 – 00:13:35.14

you know really full full rotations of the ball and we see them really get down into the last couple seconds of the shot clock and you know it’s a formula that works for them But I also think that uh Clary’s quickness and his you know he’s he’s nimble and he’s agile and I think sometimes he can push the tempo of the game a little bit

Maggie:

00:13:35.38 – 00:13:59.64

just to force that fast break force um some quick drives right to the basket So I think I’m I’m really excited that he was getting those minutes and I think he does mesh really well with with someone like Seth Lundy or even Jalen pickett that can react really quickly and just you know go down to the other other side of the court and we can get a quick two points out of it

Vince:

00:14:00.16 – 00:14:15.96

Yeah it’s really good Especially when you have both pick and carry out there and you have two guys that can drive as opposed to just one I think that creates more opportunities for the offense Early in the season We did see Clary knocked down a couple three So he’s a guy that can shoot

Vince:

00:14:16.13 – 00:14:45.77

um you know even though he’s more of a dry first guy Kind of like Jalen Pickett He you know he prefers to get in the paint So you know having him and pick both out there has created a lot of good opportunities and I think it’s something that Penn State should keep wrong with I was kind of surprised that they didn’t throw Jameel brown in there Uh he’s a really good shooter and with Nebraska is seeming to let Penn State shoot the ball from behind the arc a lot Uh he was the guy I was kind of surprised not to see

Vince:

00:14:46.43 – 00:14:48.82

 out on the court Um

Vince:

00:14:49.4 – 00:15:18.0

yeah those are kind of the main points One last point before we get into players the game kind of a little bit of a surprise but only getting five minutes He started off the game and then in the second half you saw Caleb Dorsey you know starting off before they kind of went to more of a small ball lineup Saw some but you know you saw some small ball lineups with like Myles dread and south blondie Uh so what are your thoughts on cuba not getting a lot of minutes in this game

Maggie:

00:15:18.54 – 00:15:46.52

Yeah that’s I mean I think that I was really glad to see players shine that we haven’t seen a ton of minutes or players that have been away from the team and you know not not playing for a little bit like Daley and johnson and like Caleb Dorsey So I think it’s always good to be able to have a really diverse array of players that can score in different ways that can contribute in different ways offensively and defensively

Maggie:

00:15:46.82 – 00:16:01.32

And I think uh last night with Nebraska they didn’t have a like one really strong player in the paint Like someone like Zach et

Maggie:

00:16:01.86 – 00:16:02.22

 you know

Vince:

00:16:02.23 – 00:16:15.77

I mean I might have to disagree with either Dark Wall Walker is a very good interior player He doesn’t have quite the size 69 but you know he’s really good you know center power forward for them

Maggie:

00:16:15.78 – 00:16:18.44

Yeah you’re right that he is But I think

Maggie:

00:16:19.27 – 00:16:21.93

 maybe we didn’t need

Maggie:

00:16:23.08 – 00:16:34.71

CUba in the same way that we we’ve needed him in the past against other um centers who just have that huge height advantage over some of our other players So I think

Maggie:

00:16:34.91 – 00:16:42.86

you know Nebraska is a team that can score in lots of different ways They weren’t just reliant on a center getting bucket after bucket Yeah

Vince:

00:16:42.87 – 00:16:57.4

And he’s been doing pretty well defensively for the most part However I think you’re just seeing him struggle on the offensive end and you know if there’s one guy you don’t have to worry about on the other team and you’re playing defense that makes your job that much easier And

Vince:

00:16:57.56 – 00:17:13.32

I think that’s why you might be seeing CUba on the bench He he got blocked at the rim He’s going aggressive to the rim which I really like going for the dunk and then he got blocked I think it was by sam sam grizzle of uh

Vince:

00:17:14.29 – 00:17:35.75

Nebraska But yeah he just can’t catch a break began and stopped a lot at the rim and he’s been going aggressive and you know doing the right things They just you know hasn’t quite clicked yet and maybe he needs to be just a little bit quicker But you know once he once he gets over that freshman you know adjustment period and catches up to the speed of the game

Vince:

00:17:35.97 – 00:17:57.81

you know I think he can do you know a lot of things for this Penn State team and once his offense catches up with his defense I you know I think he’s gonna be a tough guy to stop So we’ll move on to players of the game since I think we went over most of our thoughts I have to give my fidelity fighter Uh I have a little bit of bias because he’s a bucknell guy which is

Vince:

00:17:57.97 – 00:18:26.18

close to where I’m from but you have to give it to Andrew funk He is 23 points eight of 13 shooting lights out in that first half five for 10 from three and something we also saw in the second half that he did really well was using the pump fake getting guys in the air and driving to the basket for an easy two Also had a nice uh and one in transition where he kind of had a fadeaway floater and you know was able to create some contact and get an and one in the foul and

Vince:

00:18:26.46 – 00:18:38.76

yeah 22 and one’s for him tonight and me both the free throws as well So really great performance from Andrew funk How about you Who who do you think deserves the Mahoney moller player of the game award

Maggie:

00:18:38.77 – 00:18:39.77

 Um

Maggie:

00:18:40.49 – 00:19:09.62

let’s see I think I’m gonna I’m gonna give it to Daley and johnson because he he came into the game after having not played for a while I mean we’ve been missing him for a couple of weeks now at least But he I felt like he really didn’t miss a beat He jumped right back in to the offense was you know productive with six points and he also is really confident in taking his three point shot and I think

Maggie:

00:19:09.85 – 00:19:34.26

you know it’s to be away from the game for a little bit and then come back in It’s always a bit of a readjustment but I felt like that that didn’t show and he um just you know is really stepping up into those um those three point shots not everyone who went in but I think that that didn’t stop him so dearly and johnson I think it’s really good to have him back and I also think it’s really good

Maggie:

00:19:34.41 – 00:19:42.63

to have him back in such a productive way and that makes me feel good about him for the rest of the season I

Vince:

00:19:42.63 – 00:19:48.82

mean he did exactly what you want him to do He did his role he was 23 from behind the arc and

Vince:

00:19:49.33 – 00:19:58.63

you know held his own defensively So really good performance from him He you know that’s the thing when you’re a basketball player you gotta know your role He he did his role really good Um

Vince:

00:19:58.93 – 00:20:28.51

I think I’m going to give the bird brawler our third and last play of the game award I think it has to go to Kanye Clary Coach Shrewsbury really leaned on him tonight giving him 19 minutes and really kind of putting a lot of the responsibility on Kanye tonight to perform at a good level You know it was the biggest crowd and that we’ve had in B J C This year They had the three quarters of like the second level open So that was the first time that had been opened up the season so we had a lot of fans in the B J C Tonight

Vince:

00:20:28.68 – 00:20:48.1

Uh he threw you know threw the freshman out there and I thought he swam pretty well it was sink or swim and he did a really good job Coach gave him 19 minutes and you did a really good job six points three rebounds three rebounds three assists to four from the field Um You know also to three from the free throw line and you know creating some of those

Vince:

00:20:48.94 – 00:20:57.81

uh creating some contact in those free throws So I think that’s something we need to see more of Uh so really happy with his performance tonight as well

Maggie:

00:20:57.82 – 00:21:09.25

Yeah And I think earlier in the season you and I were a little we were pretty concerned about the talent that Penn State is graduating and how

Maggie:

00:21:09.41 – 00:21:27.24

you know there’s some some really key players on this team that will have been with this program for so long or have played for four years in the N C Double A and then have been able to really mesh pretty seamlessly into the Penn State line up So I think we were

Maggie:

00:21:27.45 – 00:21:41.04

a little concerned about what would happen next season But I have to say I’m feeling a lot more confident after seeing seeing these um these freshmen and these younger younger players start to step up

Vince:

00:21:41.05 – 00:21:57.3

Well I might not be quite as confident as you as I’m a little bit of a pessimist but when you have Jalen Pickett ranked by you know some and and C double A analysts as like the number one point guard in the country and you have Andrew Funk who’s one of the best shooters in the country

Vince:

00:21:57.47 – 00:22:26.61

Seth lundy We don’t know if he’s gonna graduate or be a graduate transfer because he’s played all four years so he’s getting his degree So who knows if I want to get his master’s degree somewhere else or if he’ll be trying to get into the N B A Or you know play professional basketball overseas we don’t know what he’s going to try to do next Maybe he’ll stay the fifth year which is what I’m selfishly praying for I want to see one more year of Seth lundy since he does have that covid year of eligibility So I would love to see him

Vince:

00:22:26.85 – 00:22:30.42

back in the blue and white for one more year But yeah these

Vince:

00:22:30.98 – 00:22:44.22

lot of talent and miles Dredd who’s a really good defensive player good three and D Guy So they have a lot of big shoes to fill So we we haven’t seen

Vince:

00:22:44.9 – 00:23:09.18

you know the the freshmen have shown that they can be good divisional and basketball players but we haven’t seen them really get 30 minutes per game where you’re like okay this guy’s already both offensively and defensively and can you know be there every single night and consistently performed well So I think that will definitely be the question work which will be more answered you know early next november but for now it’s a

Maggie:

00:23:09.55 – 00:23:23.07

You know I mean there’s there’s still a lot of games left in the season and a lot of um intense games especially once the big 10 tournament starts to get underway And I think we are going to really see

Maggie:

00:23:23.61 – 00:23:29.04

I think we’re really gonna see people rise to the occasion So I’m I’m feeling optimistic

Vince:

00:23:29.05 – 00:23:46.96

Yeah And speaking of the Big 10 tournament in the Big 10 standings man this is a close race So you have Purdue kinda head on their own They’re they’re 7 to 1 so far through conference play I think they want to close one today So it might not be updated Yes they might be eight and one

Vince:

00:23:47.12 – 00:24:05.8

you have Minnesota at the bottom one and six but outside of that it’s really close You have michigan state and Rutgers kind of tied for second there with a five and three conference record and then you have Nebraska the bottom 13 3 and six but everyone else smacked up right in the middle in between and at number seven

Vince:

00:24:06.09 – 00:24:36.0

uh 678 you got Illinois Penn State in Iowa with a four and four record So the fact that Penn State is only one game behind from the two seed I think is really great because if they can really hit their stride in this last week of january and february they still have a lot of time to turn it around and basketball you know when it comes to conference play is all about being hot at the right time There’s so many times

Vince:

00:24:36.18 – 00:24:58.01

you know in these big Power five conferences that you know the regular season champion is not the big time tournament champion and that is how you get to the dance But with that said I do think getting in those top four seeds and getting a double by would be really huge for Penn State So really what they need to do

Vince:

00:24:58.25 – 00:25:22.02

uh this next six weeks as they got to be battling fighting and clawing for every single win and they gotta win the close ones So if you like we can have more of those Wisconsin games where they lose by three points that’s just not gonna cut it for the seating and when you have a team that like Penn State that likes to play guys like Jalen Pickett and Andrew Funk and Seth lundy around that 40 minutes marks the game

Vince:

00:25:22.2 – 00:25:37.73

and you’re playing games on back to back nights you need that depth And that’s something that Penn State doesn’t necessarily have right now So that if they can get you know that double by and fight up into those top four that would be huge for the nene lines

Maggie:

00:25:37.74 – 00:25:41.32

 Yeah Yes Yeah

Vince:

00:25:41.33 – 00:25:41.81

 So

Vince:

00:25:42.15 – 00:26:02.05

um heading on to Tuesday night 6 30 tip off on the Big 10 network impasse impasse getaway in New Jersey and Jersey Mike’s arena we are going to be facing the Rutgers Scarlet Knights They have the same record on the season They are 13 and six the past few games They’ve had

Vince:

00:26:04.75 – 00:26:33.68

some good ones and some not some great ones You had the Rutgers be or they lost to Iowa by 11 at home So that was a team that Penn State beat They be Northwestern has been pretty good this year by three Uh took them to be overtime to beat Ohio State who’s kind of towards that lower level of the conference And then they had a 13 point loss against michigan state similar

Vince:

00:26:33.92 – 00:26:37.66

uh similar performance to Penn State So

Vince:

00:26:38.64 – 00:26:49.55

this is going to be I think a really hard fought basketball game I do think it is going to be tough for the Nittany lines to win this one on the road Uh you know

Vince:

00:26:50.0 – 00:27:10.13

Rutgers is very obviously a basketball school they’re not not a football school So their student body uh this is the sport where you know their school is pretty good So they really love their their basketball and uh you know they really do not like Penn State that we’re the only state that borders them

Vince:

00:27:10.26 – 00:27:25.07

In the big 10 So you know they have been really tried trying to get a big rivalry going So the Rutgers fans are really passionate basketball fans and I think it’s going to be a tough challenge for Penn State What are your initial thoughts heading into this one

Maggie:

00:27:25.08 – 00:27:28.68

Yeah I think it’s gonna be a reel test

Maggie:

00:27:29.29 – 00:27:50.74

and I think you know we we saw Penn State struggle at Wisconsin last week and it seems like this will be a similar game in that it’s I don’t think it will ever be entirely out of reach for Penn State to win but I think it will be really hard to win But I think they can do it

Vince:

00:27:51.54 – 00:28:19.12

Yeah And uh Penn State let’s face it has been a lot better at home in the B J C They’ve they’ve been 10 and one at home in the B J C So we’ve had a lot of good times watching them because we’ve gone to most of the home games or I’ve gone to all of them So I’ve had a lot of uh definitely more smiles than frowns when I’ve watched Penn State at home But yeah this Rutgers team really impressive They gave Purdue their lone loss on the season

Vince:

00:28:19.77 – 00:28:44.39

Uh and they did that by getting Zach Edie in foul trouble And Penn State as of late has been getting guys in foul trouble And you know I feel like uh staying away from that and avoiding the foul trouble is a big key in this game Some guys on Rutgers that we do need to keep an eye out for the leading score is Cameron Spencer He averages 13.6 points per game

Vince:

00:28:44.65 – 00:29:02.8

Making 45% of his shots from the field and he is a lights out shooter shooting at 43.9% from behind the arc So you’re you’re looking at Andrew funk numbers there So you know he’s one guy that can shoot from the perimeter Uh you also got the guard palm

Vince:

00:29:03.39 – 00:29:30.03

Okay he uh he’s another good shooter 39.3% But outside of those two guys really not any guys that scary from behind the arc on Rutgers team the rest of the team is pretty much below 30% which is you’ll let them shoot at that point if that’s their percentage So you know I think you know locking those two down from behind the arc is going to be a big key

Vince:

00:29:30.7 – 00:29:49.3

And then uh you know another team in the big 10 with another really good center Uh you know Clifford Omo rui he’s 6 11 and you know we got Clifford the big Scarlet Knight Dog here So yeah

Maggie:

00:29:49.31 – 00:29:50.59

 so

Vince:

00:29:50.59 – 00:29:56.15

Yeah I think he’s going to be a big challenge for is 6:11

Vince:

00:29:56.3 – 00:30:23.57

So I definitely prefer to have Kevin guarding him as opposed to other guys on the team Uh Yeah I think that’s gonna be a big matchup as this guy really good on both ends of the floor 13.2 points per game uh 10 rebounds averaging nearly two blocks on the defensive end So he could be giving you know Jalen Pickett a tough time in the paint Uh you know if if Kevin’s in the pain and they’re doubling

Vince:

00:30:23.76 – 00:30:30.06

So I think that could give the Nittany Lions some some issues on offense But uh you know if we can

Vince:

00:30:30.6 – 00:30:41.62

maybe play some small ball lineup and trying to drag him out of the paint that will give pick more room to operate and then also make it easier for Penn State to space the floor and knock down some threes

Maggie:

00:30:42.76 – 00:30:44.14

 Well that sounds good

Maggie:

00:30:44.86 – 00:30:54.43

I guess we’ll have to see what sort of wind up there rolling with and how the game plays out I feel like this one is hard to predict some of the other games we’ve

Maggie:

00:30:55.05 – 00:31:04.69

we’ve um speculated on before the actual game I feel more confident in what I’m saying but I feel like man this could really go either way

Vince:

00:31:04.7 – 00:31:11.31

Yeah and I don’t think I’ve been great in predicting these games I’ve gotten at least half of them wrong I think so

Maggie:

00:31:11.32 – 00:31:12.06

 that’s okay

Vince:

00:31:12.07 – 00:31:15.98

So you know definitely happen to your online Penn State wins But

Vince:

00:31:16.74 – 00:31:24.76

yeah it’s not so great when you think they’re gonna win and then they don’t pull it out So uh Communion prediction What do you see happening in this game

Maggie:

00:31:25.51 – 00:31:27.26

 Okay I

Maggie:

00:31:27.81 – 00:31:29.41

did you think of this I

Maggie:

00:31:30.61 – 00:31:35.99

I predict Kanye clary gets to 14 points

Vince:

00:31:36.5 – 00:32:01.84

Alright 14 points for Kanye Clary I like it I think that Andrew Funk is going to have another big night and I’m gonna say he has a two games in a row with 50% from behind the arc from three So I think I think he’ll make half of his threes I think he’s finding a good groove and you know I hope he’s able to keep it up and really keep it going Another thing to mention

Vince:

00:32:02.15 – 00:32:13.08

about the structure squad is they are really good on the boards If you look at the stats versus michigan state uh they outrebounded them

Vince:

00:32:13.89 – 00:32:26.22

37-34 but the big component in that is that they had 15 offensive rebounds So that was a really big turning point in the game

Maggie:

00:32:27.04 – 00:32:27.37

 So

Vince:

00:32:27.37 – 00:32:51.03

I think that could give the Nittany Lions and fits especially since there’s been a few games this season where we haven’t been great on the defensive glass So Penn State needs to be really disciplined box out there guys and really not give Rutgers any more opportunities And another thing that Penn State needs to do is really control the ball like they did against Nebraska Um

Vince:

00:32:51.3 – 00:33:17.33

they got they won the turnover battle I mean they turned it over more 10 to 9 however they had uh 10 points versus zero um on points off turnovers So that was huge Whereas Wisconsin you know we were outscored 15 to nothing on turnovers I think that’s another point of emphasis in this game at Rutgers is not giving them any three points in transition because that is something we struggled with against Wisconsin

Vince:

00:33:17.53 – 00:33:35.17

and we did a good job of taking care of the ball against Nebraska So I think we need another performance like that Maybe Kanye Clary what was the answer to that problem Uh having another ball handler out there so you know hopefully he gets more minutes and continues to shine

Maggie:

00:33:35.18 – 00:33:39.97

Absolutely You know one thing that we forgot to mention about the

Maggie:

00:33:40.22 – 00:33:59.6

Nebraska game that we should is that we did get to celebrate Seth lundy getting to 1000 points right They recognized him at the before the game even started and I think I would be remiss not to mention that here because Seth lundy has just been so consistent and a guy that we’re always rooting for So I

Maggie:

00:33:59.8 – 00:34:05.04

alright that just encouraged me and I want to make sure it gets on the official Nittany Blues record

Vince:

00:34:05.05 – 00:34:14.8

Yeah so congrats to supplement now five guys with over 1000 points So that’s a not many N C double A roster that have that So

Vince:

00:34:15.66 – 00:34:18.95

definitely got a lot of scoring options on this team and

Vince:

00:34:19.72 – 00:34:29.85

something that is really great And before we give our final score predictions I think we do have to talk about the halftime performance

Maggie:

00:34:30.31 – 00:34:30.74

 We

Vince:

00:34:30.74 – 00:34:42.31

had this uh I’ve seen them once before years and years ago It’s like this um it’s a mixture of like a dance and gymnastics team but they use jump rows just like

Vince:

00:34:42.72 – 00:34:53.11

It was 8-10 year old girls doing like crazy gymnastics some of them were doing like back flips and jump roping at the same time it

Maggie:

00:34:53.11 – 00:34:58.45

was like it was so coordinated it was so athletic It was

Maggie:

00:34:59.23 – 00:35:11.16

And like I was saying events you know sometimes he had a halftime show that’s like three minutes long These kids went for 16 minutes and could have kept going if the Penn State didn’t have to come back to start their warm ups

Vince:

00:35:11.17 – 00:35:29.13

Yeah like some of the stuff was crazy like one was like had this like big long giant jump rope and they were doing like six people at a time and there was like one of the shorter girls was doing like leapfrogging between their legs and over the jump rope at the same time when I was like oh my goodness like that is insane And

Vince:

00:35:29.55 – 00:35:57.04

They also did like you know they were doing jump ropes like on their knees there were times where like they were sitting and singing the jump rope around and like still able to jump over it while sitting Like it was kind of like it’s amazing It’s it’s a lot of talent from like very young Children which is bizarre Really bizarre to see but you know quite a performance like I think only one rope like hit someone’s leg the entire 16 minutes Um

Vince:

00:35:57.27 – 00:36:06.31

Like I know when I jump rope for 16 minutes I’m definitely hitting my feet quite a few times just doing a regular regular jump rope But

Maggie:

00:36:06.32 – 00:36:08.26

 yeah that was very impressive

Vince:

00:36:08.27 – 00:36:23.53

And then there was there was the human jump rope where that was so scary Like there was these two girls one was holding the girl by her feet the other one was holding by the arms and they’re actually using a human to jump rope And he was like oh gosh hopefully this

Maggie:

00:36:23.53 – 00:36:24.02

 like

Vince:

00:36:24.51 – 00:36:27.05

girl doesn’t get stepped on or

Vince:

00:36:27.63 – 00:36:54.54

you know kicked or anything and you know thankfully no one got hurt doing that dangerous stunt But man there’s some crazy stunts or like you know they have like three jump ropes and people are running from all different directions to like definitely an impressive performance and I think uh they usually come to the bigger games so games like coaches versus cancer or the game next week Those are the games like I think Penn State tries to coordinate with them So

Vince:

00:36:54.8 – 00:37:09.45

you know if you want to see something like really you know interesting at the halftime show and that’s impressive that you don’t usually see um those are definitely you know games to come up to And we also have the line that’s who did an awesome performance as well but

Vince:

00:37:09.74 – 00:37:10.2

 like

Maggie:

00:37:10.21 – 00:37:11.87

 jump ropes a tough act

Vince:

00:37:11.97 – 00:37:32.38

the jumper very tough act to follow Yeah they’re amazing as well and they’re three time national champions for a reason But yeah I just wanted to mention that that was some crazy kind of crazy awesome things that you don’t really see at games But you know we’ll go to our final score prediction at Rutgers Maggie what do you got for the Nittany Lions

Maggie:

00:37:32.98 – 00:37:36.54

 75 Rutgers 70

Maggie:

00:37:36.79 – 00:37:37.16

 all

Vince:

00:37:37.16 – 00:37:48.48

Right five point victory for the lines I’m not quite as optimistic I’m gonna say Rutgers gets a win at home 79-72

Maggie:

00:37:48.49 – 00:37:49.26

 So

Vince:

00:37:49.26 – 00:37:54.81

I think this will be a tough one for Penn State But I do think that we’ll get a win at home

Vince:

00:37:55.1 – 00:37:58.47

at the end of the season split with them because they are one of our last home

Maggie:

00:37:58.47 – 00:38:03.38
