What’s up everybody Welcome back to the Nittany Blue’s podcast It’s been a little bit more than a week since Penn State has won the Rose Bowl and I think it’s probably fair to say that we’re both still pretty excited about it What about you vince Are you still hype

Vince:

00:00:15.4 – 00:00:19.76

We are Rose Bowl champions I’m gonna say that till 2024

Andrew:

00:00:19.77 – 00:00:29.96

Yeah absolutely Uh So in other championship game news what did you think of the national championship game between Georgia and TCU last night

Vince:

00:00:30.48 – 00:01:00.05

man Just an absolute butt whooping You’re just kind of like how did T C You get there And it’s just one of the things like with sports like I’m sure Georgia kinda had their best day and TCU was just everything like like worst possible scenario whereas TCU you know everything kind of went right against Michigan and then like Michigan had a lot of things go wrong they don’t typically go wrong So it’s kind of like one of those things you know sports that’s just a little crazy

Vince:

00:01:00.21 – 00:01:23.25

But also at the same time it makes you it makes me really excited for this 12 team playoff because teams changed through so much throughout the course of a season So if you look at that Penn State team that won the Big 10 championship week too when they lose to pit um that really kept them out of the college football playoff but the team they were was just so much better

Vince:

00:01:23.59 – 00:01:52.85

uh you know at the end of the season than they were at the beginning like you know if I saw that team at the beginning of the season I said no way I don’t want to see them in the playoff like I don’t even want to see them in the Rose Bowl like they just don’t deserve it But you know throughout the course of the season they got better and improved and you know I think you know with how some of the ball games played out you know especially with like Alabama um you know we’re obviously tired of seeing them in the college football playoff but you know I think they would have you know given Georgia a much better run than TCU

Andrew:

00:01:53.01 – 00:02:21.86

Yeah absolutely I agree with you I think um you know T C You got off to a super hot start against Michigan with those two pick sixes and then they just had kind of enough big play energy throughout the rest of the game to kind of keep Michigan at arm’s length even though Michigan uh did kind of mount a comeback And I think that Michigan also had um some things go against them like that one weird overturn of the touchdown catch when the guy like basically fell backwards into the end zone

Andrew:

00:02:22.0 – 00:02:41.25

So I mean I think that TCU um you know more or less kind of escaped with that win and then I agree with you that you know it’s just kind of a matter of everything kind of working correctly for Georgia and TCU maybe being a little wide eyed with the occasion and just never could really get their feet under them in the game

Andrew:

00:02:41.44 – 00:03:07.63

Um And you know what I I just couldn’t believe though how easily Georgia was able to move the ball in them I mean they were getting like five or six yards a play averaging um against that TCU defense and they were just getting chunk plays all over the place So you know I I um I’m sure that they’re asking selves the hard questions today and they’re probably gonna be looking inward in this upcoming spring season Two

Andrew:

00:03:07.64 – 00:03:22.99

kind of figure out like defensively how can we not let something like that happen again Because like you’re not like you’re fortunate to beat michigan with that but you know you’re not gonna get too many college football playoff wins with defensive performances like that

Vince:

00:03:23.0 – 00:03:33.55

Yeah and even the more wild thing is is that Georgia didn’t have their best performance against Ohio State and I felt like Ohio State did pretty close to their best

Vince:

00:03:34.1 – 00:03:50.93

and you know your kick away from seeing Ohio State playing that game and I’m sure Ohio State does the same thing with how they played with all the explosive players that Ohio State you know has on their offense and you know T C you might have scored more points against Ohio State’s defense but like still

Vince:

00:03:50.94 – 00:04:07.76

like how crazy would it have been if like Ohio State won the national championship and like didn’t even win like the big tent east like glad it didn’t very glad it didn’t happen Like it hurts my soul to see Ohio State do well But like that it’s just kind of wild that that could happen

Andrew:

00:04:07.77 – 00:04:16.18

Yeah I mean it really is and I think that just further like proves the need for an expanded playoff because

Andrew:

00:04:16.38 – 00:04:37.83

you know it would like the playoff would have been so much better if teams like Alabama and Tennessee were in it But you know the fact that you know we have the scenario in the big 10 east where michigan beats Ohio State they win the Big 10 and then you know they don’t win their semifinal but Ohio State almost wins There’s two kind of leapfrog them in terms of

Andrew:

00:04:38.03 – 00:04:55.33

accomplishments this season you know especially if they won the national championship Like that’s a crazy mental scenario to work through especially if you’re a committee that’s trying to you know put together what they call the four best teams in college football Like it’s just you know 2024 that expanded playoff can’t come soon enough

Vince:

00:04:55.84 – 00:05:23.58

Yeah And kind of the wild thing about it to another thing is that these players have so much time off between their conference championship game and you know New Year’s eve when they played the college football playoff like when you’re an athlete you’re just so used to that routine of like you know one week apart one week apart one week apart and then you have this like four week gap like that’s such a long time to not be playing football when that’s what you’re used to And you saw Georgia

Vince:

00:05:23.84 – 00:05:44.38

and like michigan not be on top of their game and then you saw Georgia kind of do a 1 80 they were kind of lucky to survive and then they kind of looked like the normal selves when it was only nine days apart So um I think you know like even just even if it was eight that would be good because they’d be playing maybe like one or two weeks earlier

Vince:

00:05:44.67 – 00:06:08.68

and have like two weeks in between like the semifinal that way there’s not quite as long of a layoff because like TCU they came out of that brake really well and you know they were you know up to the task and they look fresh against michigan So you know and Georgia kind of looked a little sluggish and kind of not in in sync So you know I think that the extra playoff games would help in that regard as well for the athletes

Andrew:

00:06:08.69 – 00:06:14.39

Yeah that’s a that’s a good point You know it’s like personally like as a fan when

Andrew:

00:06:14.59 – 00:06:39.89

you know Penn State had that long layoff from the end of the season even though they did go on a winning streak at the end of the season going into the Rose bowl I am always a little bit concerned about you know kind of the lack of action between that game and the bowl game especially with it being a big one like the Rose Bowl So I think that feeling and that effect is only amplified then when you apply it to the national championships like that

Vince:

00:06:40.42 – 00:07:01.74

Yeah Another thing I thought was kind of funny was coach franklin saying oh we’re expecting new and evenly and you know kate and Wallace all back and then like so yeah I was like oh Penn State’s gonna get healthy and look good and it was just like nope they’re just you know still you know they were still recovering from their injuries and unfortunately we weren’t able to play But

Vince:

00:07:02.31 – 00:07:02.92

 you know

Vince:

00:07:03.88 – 00:07:04.12

 how

Andrew:

00:07:04.12 – 00:07:12.37

much of that do you think was like like gamesmanship coach speech though Like just kind of putting it out there for Utah to think about

Vince:

00:07:13.11 – 00:07:32.88

Yeah You know that’s I guess that’s a good idea because you do give the other team more to prepare for and you know especially with someone like fashion who’s you know top 10 overall you know draft prospects So probably a good move on Franklin’s part I guess Yeah don’t give him enough credit for you know things he does well So I think that’s something we should give him credit for

Andrew:

00:07:32.89 – 00:07:41.26

Yeah kind of playing some some mind games to give Penn State that much more of an edge But speaking of NFL decision making So

Andrew:

00:07:41.45 – 00:08:03.78

um you and I talked about this off pod but uh Penn State’s been getting some really good news recently especially on the defensive side with some key players deciding to return next season Um Most recently we got word that Devon Eli’s Adisa Isaac and Curtis Jacobs have all decided to return to Penn State for the 2023 season

Andrew:

00:08:03.93 – 00:08:21.53

Obviously with some key guys like PJ muster for Joey porter Jr nick tar Burton already um on their way to the NFL either due to um leaving a year earlier graduation Uh how much importance would you say There is two guys like this coming back

Vince:

00:08:21.54 – 00:08:26.2

I think there’s a huge emphasis of importance because you know

Vince:

00:08:26.85 – 00:08:39.36

you can’t always rely on freshman you don’t know what they’re going to be it’s like it’s like an an NFL draft pick Like you know the Eagles got Jalen Reagor in the first round and then he turned out to be terrible Like the same thing could happen with these

Andrew:

00:08:39.36 – 00:08:40.4

 freshmen that

Vince:

00:08:40.4 – 00:08:48.0

we like get out of high schools like we we don’t know we don’t know what we’re getting like yeah some of them might have you know high ratings and stuff but

Vince:

00:08:48.17 – 00:09:08.14

you know it doesn’t really mean anything and I think like it was good to see these guys come back and I think it was a good decision on their part like unless you’re in the first three rounds maybe even for you know for the NFL draft in my opinion it’s not necessarily worth it to go that early

Vince:

00:09:08.44 – 00:09:35.85

Um So some of the guys really surprised me like Brenton strange and do Scruggs well I think they’ll be good they’re like really low on a lot of uh you know draft prospects list kind of like in that 6th and 7th round range and if you get drafted there and don’t make the team you don’t really have any guaranteed money Where with the N I L Deals now you know there’s you know a good you know guaranteed chunk of money

Vince:

00:09:36.04 – 00:10:01.14

and then if you boost your draft stock high enough into those early rounds you know you get so much you know guaranteed money that you’re set for the rest of your life you know if granted you’re fiscally responsible with it So I was kind of a little surprised to see those guys go like you know nick Tar Burton I thought he would have really benefited from staying one more year And um you know do Scruggs printing strange

Andrew:

00:10:01.56 – 00:10:23.07

Yeah Tar Burton for Tar Burton specifically though because I was thinking on him a little bit I think it just has to do with the fact that he finally strung together an injury for a year because he is a guy who’s kinda had um some bad luck with injuries over the course of his ps you career So I think you know he’s trying to kind of capitalize on this healthy streak and

Andrew:

00:10:23.27 – 00:10:37.6

you know and never really know like when that final hit or that final misstep is gonna come that’s going to end his football career So I kind of saw it more uh making sense for him but for guys like Scruggs I do agree with you

Vince:

00:10:38.48 – 00:11:04.53

Yeah Yeah and I guess that you know that’s true and maybe that’s why Olu fashion is said uh you know he was looking like a top 10 overall draft pick and I like I could not you know give give you one reason to not go to the NFL if you’re a projected first round pick and like that’s so much guaranteed money even if you just like suck and like it come from the team a year later like you still make so much and guarantee that you’re set for the rest of your life So

Vince:

00:11:04.79 – 00:11:05.65

 um you know I

Andrew:

00:11:05.65 – 00:11:10.6

feel like so many of these things that we’re saying can just apply to Jalen Reagor Yeah

Vince:

00:11:10.61 – 00:11:16.08

man that’s what he said for the rest of his life and like it was one of the worst wide receivers in the NFL

Andrew:

00:11:16.48 – 00:11:36.185

Yeah I mean of all the of all the things that the eagles have done over the years I mean obviously they’ve done a lot of good but they’ve also done a ton of things that just make you want to hit your head against a brick wall that I think will always be the thing that sticks in my crawl the most just because like you you just watch what a superstar Justin jefferson is an

Andrew:

00:11:36.195 – 00:11:40.625

and you just sit there and say to yourself man that guy could have been an eagle

Vince:

00:11:40.635 – 00:12:02.36

Yeah man I remember texting you like when we were on the clock Justin jefferson we’re gonna get him when I hear jail and I’m like what He was like a second or third round like like what’s going on here So like I was just that will hurt myself like the rest of my life but we got a brown so at least how he got himself a little a little redemption and and

Vince:

00:12:03.4 – 00:12:09.57

yeah so kind of a bummer though because if we had Justin jefferson we might have even got Micah Parsons

Andrew:

00:12:09.62 – 00:12:10.45

 Yeah I

Vince:

00:12:10.69 – 00:12:26.02

seen him in you know eagles green instead of you know cowboys blue So that would have been uh you know definitely nice to see Micah stay in P A You know the best stay in Harrisburg Penn State to Philly But yeah I guess it just wasn’t meant to be

Andrew:

00:12:26.03 – 00:12:28.16

Yeah I guess not but maybe

Andrew:

00:12:28.3 – 00:12:34.27

maybe the eagles can right the wrong if they go out and get Joey porter Jr I’d love to have him and kelly green

Vince:

00:12:34.28 – 00:12:47.2

Yeah um and I think you know there is potential that a lot of teams will uh you know pass on the corner early because there are a lot of teams multiple first round picks So

Vince:

00:12:47.42 – 00:13:10.83

you know it was like you know keely Ringo and you know the corner from Illinois and cam smith like there’s so many good corners that some teams might wait So like we might get like a defensive line and um like one of those edge rushers you know because our line is getting pretty old but then you might see maybe get a corner like Joey porter late late in the first round So I’d be happy with him at 10

Vince:

00:13:11.23 – 00:13:15.69

But um yeah definitely excited to see some of those Penn State prospects in the first round

Andrew:

00:13:15.7 – 00:13:21.4

For sure What do you think the chances are that the Eagles can snag like a will Anderson junior at 10

Vince:

00:13:22.02 – 00:13:23.63

 0%

Andrew:

00:13:23.64 – 00:13:25.28

 Yeah you’re probably

Vince:

00:13:25.28 – 00:13:39.64

right But hey crazier things have happened So maybe uh you know how he packages up and goes to get it and like four quarterbacks go in the first four and the Bears trade down or whatever and who knows you know crazier things have happened

Andrew:

00:13:40.42 – 00:14:02.47

Yeah Speaking of you know with the bears snagging the first overall pick Um I feel like we’re gonna get into kind of that wild period right before the draft where a bunch of phone calls are made some potential trades are made and stuff like that Do you think that there’s any chance that the bears trade away Justin fields for any kind of package

Vince:

00:14:03.35 – 00:14:25.51

I honestly don’t think that would be a terrible idea especially with a team like the Jets who has like a pretty good team around them But you know Zach Wilson is just terrible and you know you move a guy like Justin Fields there he you know might be able to have a lot of success and maybe they want to draft bryce young or you know C J stroud you know it could happen So

Vince:

00:14:25.86 – 00:14:55.49

no I don’t think that would be a terrible decision for them to make Um so I would either go that route or you know get a king’s ransom kind of like the R G Three trade that they did years ago ST louis and that you know that really benefited them and their franchise going forward So again I think that’s one of the two ways that they should go just because they can really you know make away because teams will do anything for a quarterback Like bryce Young

Andrew:

00:14:55.72 – 00:15:03.83

Yeah Um Do you think though because you know we’re getting now into you know the post college football season when

Andrew:

00:15:03.97 – 00:15:28.38

the main topic of conversation shifts from what guys are doing on the field to the measurable so you know you get talk about Kenny Pickett small hands and Tyler Murray’s height and stuff like that so you know like one early storyline is that you know bryce young as talented as he is is a little undersized apparently you know there’s some concern about his weight and stuff like that which is why

Andrew:

00:15:28.54 – 00:15:43.45

teams are reportedly you know really eager to get a guy like will Levis just because he’s such a stout tall body with a big arm and stuff like that Do you think that his draft stock might suffer from things like that

Vince:

00:15:44.15 – 00:15:52.45

I mean I certainly don’t think he did anything to help himself Like he was he had a lot of games where he was like under 100 pass yards in the sec

Andrew:

00:15:52.46 – 00:16:09.87

sorry I meant like bryce young Do you think that like yeah his like his height and his size might um might you know I don’t want to say like limit team’s appetite to go get him because I mean the results on the field speak for themselves But do you think that that might give some teams some pause

Vince:

00:16:11.24 – 00:16:36.33

you know potentially and you know jobs rely on these draft picks if you’re in the front office So again you’re gonna kind of look at everything under a microscope but I just think he’s too good and I’m a guy who I like to see you know winning football and in production at the college level Like my thing is if you weren’t great in college I don’t think you’re really gonna do well in the NFL that’s just kind of

Vince:

00:16:36.63 – 00:16:56.93

my opinion I do think more of the measurables and like the combine stuff I think it more matters for guys that like a small school who had inferior competition because um you know film can trick you you know if you’re dominating guys who just are inferior level of football but you know if you’re

Vince:

00:16:57.18 – 00:17:09.76

you know playing in Alabama and like you don’t have like the best 40 or the best three cone drill and you’re just like mauling guys on Georgia and making them look bad Like you can play in the NFL like right Uh

Andrew:

00:17:09.76 – 00:17:20.12

I think that that’s very true And I think that’s like kind of the message that like you know even though we like to rag on him nick Saban had to quote you know that one of the best things that you could do

Andrew:

00:17:20.25 – 00:17:46.86

um for your NFL draft prospects is to play football Um you know he kind of put a plane out there I think in this era of opt outs and stuff He was like you know like you can you can opt out like you can opt out a year or whatever and you can prepare for the draft and stuff like that But you know at the end of the day like your measurables aren’t going to um necessarily translate to what you’re gonna do on a football field but whatever you do want a football field will translate to what you will do on a football field So

Andrew:

00:17:47.02 – 00:18:04.06

um you know hopefully I mean like bryce young is just so amazing So accurate just extremely athletic So it’ll be interesting to see where teams take him and all these other like this other crop of quarterbacks because it is a pretty quarterback heavy class this year

Vince:

00:18:04.6 – 00:18:20.92

Yeah and yeah I think bryce Young is the best quarterback out of that bunch But yeah like you said measurables aren’t necessarily everything like you know look at Devin Allen he had he ran the fourth fastest 110 m hurdle time in the entire world like

Vince:

00:18:21.08 – 00:18:35.18

Yeah he’s one of like four people to go sub 13 or sub 13 or 14 seconds I forget But like he’s there’s like three people on the planet who are better at the hurdles than Devin Allen in history Like

Andrew:

00:18:35.51 – 00:18:37.68

the guy from like where was I

Andrew:

00:18:37.69 – 00:18:43.91

Washington who broke the 40 yard record at the combine Was that like John Smith or whatever

Vince:

00:18:43.92 – 00:19:04.79

Even john ross like he has not an NFL career So there’s so much more to like being a wide receiver than a 40 yard dash now it matters But like you know the difference between a 43 guy and a 44 like as long as you’re not doing like five seconds or whatever or like 549 like chad powers like you’re gonna be all right

Vince:

00:19:04.95 – 00:19:05.39

 for

Andrew:

00:19:05.39 – 00:19:28.04

sure But speaking of wide receivers got some interesting stuff going on with transfer wide receivers for Penn State So shortly after the Rose Bowl concluded Penn State got a commitment from transfer wide receiver from N C State Devin carter And there’s some interesting things about this guy that you know I think

Andrew:

00:19:28.23 – 00:19:52.13

um contrasts pretty well to the guys that they currently have on the roster Um You know because he really prospects as a big body wide receiver he’s 64 with a pretty decent wingspan Um And you know just out of curiosity I was trying to see you know what other notable uh Nittany Lions kind of had a similar physical prospect like that and one that really stood out to me was Allen Robinson

Andrew:

00:19:52.34 – 00:20:06.79

So you know it’ll be interesting to see how you know Drew Aller is gonna come in with a crop of really speedy wide receivers Obviously keandre Lambert smith probably you know just as far as guys who are coming back projects as wide receiver number one But

Andrew:

00:20:06.93 – 00:20:30.57

um obviously Harrison Wallace the third is uh making himself felt on the field with a really solid Rose Bowl performance Omari Evans is going to be working for some for some work as well But then you know you’re gonna have a guy like Devin carter out there You know you could chuck it deep maybe give a 50 50 ball and be confident that he’ll bring down most of them So that to me is pretty exciting Yeah

Vince:

00:20:30.57 – 00:20:36.7

I really enjoyed his highlight films Devin carter just stiff arming you know defensive backs into the ground and

Vince:

00:20:36.83 – 00:20:51.37

getting a lot of extra yards and I was really impressed Um One of those was actually on Storm Duck and I was like this is making me a little nervous because we’re all hyped to get Storm Duck And you know how many fights do you think those guys are going to get into and practice or scuffles

Andrew:

00:20:52.15 – 00:21:14.44

That is that is funny So hopefully they’ll be able to bridge the gap quickly between um enemies on the field to teammates and happy Valley But uh you know another wide receiver that I do want to just mention here and at the time of recording he has not committed anywhere But there’s another massive and I mean physically massive wide risk

Andrew:

00:21:14.44 – 00:21:32.35

that is considering Penn State as a transfer target And that is uh Tyrone broaden from bowling green Vince This guy is 67 So you want to talk about like a Juwan johnson This is another Juwan johnson like just huge huge target Um It’s

Vince:

00:21:32.35 – 00:21:34.73

way bigger Wasn’t Juwan only like 64

Andrew:

00:21:34.74 – 00:21:36.74

 I maybe I don’t know But

Andrew:

00:21:36.88 – 00:21:37.76

 you know we’re

Vince:

00:21:38.48 – 00:21:42.01

in the NFL now Yeah Yeah

Andrew:

00:21:42.02 – 00:21:50.98

So yeah maybe maybe I’m kind of under selling just how tall Tyrone is But yeah I mean we’re like uh like

Andrew:

00:21:51.65 – 00:21:55.48

what was it like mike too tall jones or whatever on the Dallas cowboys

Vince:

00:21:55.59 – 00:21:56.75

 already Too tall jones

Andrew:

00:21:56.75 – 00:22:07.67

Yeah Eddie too tall jones Yeah this is gonna be like Tyrone too tall Brogden coming off the yeah coming out of the end zone for the Nittany Lions after catching the ball that was thrown like 12 ft in the air

Vince:

00:22:07.68 – 00:22:16.15

Yeah I think this will be really interesting to see how Mike uses a bigger body wide receiver because if you look at Penn State we really don’t

Vince:

00:22:16.73 – 00:22:42.47

I have one Like I guess liam Clifford is a little bigger but he’s not like I think he’s only like 6263 but kind of your main guys that we have this year are more speed guys like Mitchell Tinsley and parker Washington keandre Lambert Harrison All that’s like I think that those guys I think of like smaller faster guys Um not like crazy small but like you know kind of more they’re more known for their speed to get open as opposed to creating separation

Vince:

00:22:42.6 – 00:23:01.41

with their size And if you look at Devin carter uh the way he moves his body is really good He’s almost like a rebounder boxing out in basketball So I really like that when I saw some of his highlights So you know I hope he continues to do that against some of those Ohio State defensive backs and uh gets a lot of touchdowns in columbus next year

Andrew:

00:23:01.42 – 00:23:03.28

Yeah that that would be nice But

Andrew:

00:23:03.43 – 00:23:15.15

yeah so um obviously making some moves in the transfer portal at wide receiver already possibly some more moves in coming So by the time that you’re listening to this Tyrone may have made his decision

Andrew:

00:23:15.32 – 00:23:35.67

We’ll see if it lands him in Happy Valley but we did also see some other potential transfer targets Uh some names that we’ve mentioned a little while back Um One of them being Dante thornton from Oregon He was high on Penn State’s radar when he was coming out of high school he has officially committed to Tennessee

Andrew:

00:23:35.68 – 00:23:48.95

So you know best of luck to him Tennessee looks to be a team that is gonna want to you know really go deep a lot of times especially since Joe Milton has an arm that can throw a ball roughly 500 yards

Vince:

00:23:48.96 – 00:23:52.06

 and yards

Andrew:

00:23:52.07 – 00:23:56.03

I mean just like talk about like just

Andrew:

00:23:56.58 – 00:24:01.35

effortless effortless throwing power So yeah

Vince:

00:24:01.36 – 00:24:07.78

It’s crazy He just flings the football because like 70 yards without even trying And I’m like I can throw like maybe half that

Andrew:

00:24:07.78 – 00:24:09.24

 far if

Vince:

00:24:09.24 – 00:24:11.38

 everything works perfectly

Andrew:

00:24:11.6 – 00:24:37.33

So now I think I think Tennessee is gonna be really a team to watch out for again next year I mean they’re kind of you know it’s it’s funny that the kind of parallels that they’re in with Penn State right now because like the sec is currently a two team race between Georgia and Alabama and Tennessee is like right there and Penn State’s kind of in a similar position with Georgia and or I’m sorry with Michigan and Ohio State

Vince:

00:24:38.0 – 00:25:02.06

Yeah I think that’s a really good comparison in the sec like I’ll see you in Tennessee are just you know that close behind Alabama and Georgia So it’s kind of like when they upset them it was it was like a big deal Kind of like when we upset Ohio State So yeah there were definitely a team to be pulling for in the sec if you’re kind of sick and tired of Alabama and Georgia running the table

Andrew:

00:25:02.53 – 00:25:31.5

So um yeah so I think that that brings up another good point that I wanted to get your reaction for So obviously with the conclusion of the season um all of the talk aside from the NFL draft is going to what happens next year And so you know every publication now is releasing their way to early poll for 2023 week one Like what is the pole going to look like based on the results that we saw in the bowl season

Andrew:

00:25:31.68 – 00:25:50.44

And very similarly to 2016 When Penn State made their trip to the Rose bowl Penn State is projected to be ranked pretty high Um I did I looked through a handful of these uh too early polls and um almost all of them had Penn State in the top 10 Number seven seem

Andrew:

00:25:50.44 – 00:26:09.21

to be a pretty popular pick for some of these writers But one thing that really kind of surprised me or to actually usa today had Penn State at number five and Sports Illustrated had Penn State at number four Like could you imagine a top five week one ranking for Penn State next year

Vince:

00:26:10.04 – 00:26:12.35

 I would I would just I

Andrew:

00:26:12.35 – 00:26:13.61

 mean I

Vince:

00:26:13.61 – 00:26:38.28

think they could be there But the fact that when they’re ranked that high they always seem to underperform I would just hate it Like I don’t want Penn State to be ranked high at all Like the lower ranked the better in my opinion for Penn State they always seem to do better when they’re hungry Uh when I was looking at 24 7 sports they actually had Penn State at number five behind Ohio state michigan Alabama and Georgia So

Vince:

00:26:38.46 – 00:26:56.55

you know I think you know five is like kind of realistic and I think they deserve it They have a lot of guys coming back some good recruits coming in and you know transfer portal guys So I think the program is looking really bright next year Um but again they got to execute if they have one bad game

Vince:

00:26:56.73 – 00:27:11.67

you know it can turn into two and you don’t have sean Clifford’s leadership next year to like kind of keep you even keel through the whole season So you know things get snowball negatively really quick if they got that first loss So yeah you know definitely uh it’s a it’s a wait and see thing

Andrew:

00:27:11.68 – 00:27:22.41

Yeah yeah that’s a that’s a great point So you know we’ll we’ll see how things play out I mean obviously we still have spring football to work through and you know there’s always going to be uh some

Andrew:

00:27:22.6 – 00:27:51.49

uh just snowballing of momentum preseason for particular team that maybe gets like a big uh incoming trance free or whatever the case may be But I just thought it was interesting how you know just how quickly um the conversation shifts with a Rose bowl victory top 10 finish with Penn State finishing number seven in the Ap poll this season So it’s just it’s it’s awesome to just see Penn State right The ship in such a you know such an exciting way

Vince:

00:27:52.27 – 00:28:21.68

Yeah I I agree Um And yeah we talked about a lot of good things that happened However uh we did lose a couple of guys recently so bryce Seffner announced that he was not going to be returning to football We also saw that Cody romano reserve linebacker he’s going to be a Transfer transfer graduate in the portal so that those guys will be going elsewhere Um Unfortunately but we did get some pretty cool news We got Alex falcons

Vince:

00:28:21.89 – 00:28:27.12

kicker coming in from Oklahoma What are your thoughts on getting a new kicker

Andrew:

00:28:27.13 – 00:28:33.66

Well you know I we said it so many times on the spot before um Good specialists are

Andrew:

00:28:33.88 – 00:28:37.77

um a real key difference maker in college football especially

Vince:

00:28:37.85 – 00:28:38.8

 Yeah

Andrew:

00:28:38.81 – 00:29:00.32

exactly and you know and what’s even crazy is that you know you ask Ohio State fans and ruggles across his entire Ohio State career has just been absolute nails for them You know he’s just a guy who’s like super reliable from pretty much any distance uh you know like from like 50 and n and stuff like that and it was just one

Andrew:

00:29:00.71 – 00:29:27.46

uh one kick and you know who knows if it was like a bad hole or whatever It was maybe a weird step that patch of turf that he stepped on like who the heck knows what happened but you know like even to the best of them uh like crazy stuff like that happened so you’ll want to make sure that you get a guy who 99% of the time is able to nail um those types of kicks and so the fact that Penn State is getting guys like this is hugely beneficial especially as

Andrew:

00:29:27.65 – 00:29:32.28

you know like we’re gonna be getting um you know drew our

Andrew:

00:29:32.83 – 00:29:42.05

um kind of up to speed as like the starting quarterback weekend and week out and stuff like that So I gotta make sure that we get the points where we can so having a guy like that is only going to be beneficial

Vince:

00:29:42.97 – 00:30:06.21

Yeah I agree Uh you know definitely more competition out of that spot I think would be good to to really find that guy who can be automatic because we’ve seen kicking her Penn State in the past and to have that be one less thing to worry about is you know really good for the coaching staff Uh Andrew what do you think this is the impact of not having bryce Seffner back next year How is that going to impact Penn State

Andrew:

00:30:06.45 – 00:30:25.48

Well I think it creates a couple of uh you know conversations and some questions with Phil trout line and James franklin as far as like what they wanna do across the offensive line because Kayden Wallace is coming back next year and he does have some significant playing time at right tackle Obviously fashion you is going to be projected to star

Andrew:

00:30:25.49 – 00:30:51.53

at left tackle as they should be Um and I think that you know they feel pretty good at you know with what they have at at the guard positions Um we’ve talked about the possibility of hunter nor is it being moved over to center to fill the role of juice Scruggs So I think the main question is like you know how flexible do we want to be with Drew Shelton because Drew um at least as far as I’m concerned he really kind of showed himself to be pretty competent at the tackle position

Andrew:

00:30:51.68 – 00:31:12.13

So maybe they want to maybe test amount at right tackle um just you know kind of fill that slot Maybe if they need um some you know better protection on that side But then the question mark becomes like you know what if Olu suffers another injury and we need another guy who’s reliable at left tackle to protect the blindside and stuff like that Like do you move through

Andrew:

00:31:12.14 – 00:31:36.57

back and then put Kayden balls back in it Right tackle Like I just think it you know kind of creates this uh kind of flow chart if you will of like things that the team is gonna need to figure out And also just kind of say like okay well if this scenario happens like how confident we feel like with this guy in this position and I think the incoming class with Javon Williams um also kind of makes this interesting because

Andrew:

00:31:36.74 – 00:31:48.93

you know with a guy like Drew Shelton we saw that a true freshman can come in and play the tackle position pretty well Well you know Williams is coming in and he’s one of the best in the country you know if not the best tackle in the country so maybe he can come in and fill that

Andrew:

00:31:49.14 – 00:32:12.97

um right tackle spot if we need to or if you know we want to move drew over and then we feel good about Jason Williams covering the left side if he gets hurt Like you know it’s just I’m repeating myself and I’m saying there’s like 1000 different combinations and different scenarios that they can play out So I think it’s just gonna be a matter of the coaching staff kind of playing that game of checkers with themselves to see where things fit the best Yeah

Vince:

00:32:12.98 – 00:32:17.79

And uh I think it is good for the continuity of the offensive line to not

Vince:

00:32:17.98 – 00:32:45.97

weekend two positions like usually like with the eagles they seem to not you know just throw tackles on both sides Like they seem they seem to have a guy from the left side and the right side like you saw lane johnson go down and instead of like moving my lot over to the right and Andre Dillard to the left side they just put Jack Driscoll on the right side because for whatever reason Andre Dillard can only play on the left well and you know they did that to change one position instead of weakening too

Vince:

00:32:46.18 – 00:33:15.83

So you know I think they might do the same thing I actually think it would be beneficial to try Kate and walls that guard Uh he just seemed to struggle at times especially early in the season It seemed like he was getting beat a lot and you know he’s a lot of talent I was looking at the uh you know the the draft prospects and he was in like the top 500 So you know you know the teams are gonna like his talent but maybe he’s just a guy who’s more suited for the guard spot where you know it’s more physical and

Vince:

00:33:16.02 – 00:33:20.33

you know he won’t have to deal as much with those lanky ad rushers

Andrew:

00:33:21.31 – 00:33:33.36

Yeah I mean I agree It’s just another possibility that um trout wine and franklin and you’re said you’re gonna have to you know kind of put their heads together to see um you know what they want to do really

Vince:

00:33:33.37 – 00:33:41.03

Yeah And you know speaking of of you know good news how about Dominic Deluca getting on scholarship

Andrew:

00:33:41.04 – 00:33:44.79

Yeah awesome heartwarming video Just like they always are

Andrew:

00:33:44.94 – 00:33:57.35

Don Deluca just kind of do it all kind of guy for Penn State gets put on scholarship the whole team goes nuts And so that was just really cool for you know a guy that especially you vince you shouted him out a couple of times here

Vince:

00:33:57.36 – 00:34:13.2

Yeah he’s definitely one of my favorite players kinda almost reminds me a little bit of like Ryan Kaiser the way he just kind of walked on and um he even had injuries so that’s even more of an obstacle to overcome and you know he just kind of worked his way up to special teams and

Vince:

00:34:13.53 – 00:34:31.15

you know really hard worker and you know kind of reminds me you know you know his game a little bit so to see him get a scholarship definitely makes me feel good and I think he’s a really great candidate to fill you know Jonathan Sutherland’s number zero next year So I think he’s a great leader for this team and you know very deserving of that scholarship

Andrew:

00:34:31.16 – 00:34:36.66

right Definitely a guy who leads by example you know he just he plays every down as hard as he can

Vince:

00:34:37.42 – 00:34:51.74

Yeah and if he’s if he’s a starter like next year with Curtis Jacobs and Abdul carter like can you imagine us being that good that we have 34 star linebackers just you know as our second strength

Andrew:

00:34:52.6 – 00:34:57.45

Yeah You know that’s like that that’s exactly where linebacker you should be you know

Vince:

00:34:57.46 – 00:35:09.43

Yeah And you know speaking of linebacker you how about Tony Rojas We have one Gatorade state player of the year now we got to we got Tony Rojas when in the state Virginia player of the year

Vince:

00:35:09.61 – 00:35:12.22

Gatorade player of the year What are your thoughts on that

Andrew:

00:35:12.23 – 00:35:39.11

I was pumped Um you know because I was actually trying to find the history of former players who won Virginia player of the year because I wanted to see if other Nittany Lions had won that award But that kind of data was actually harder to dig up than I thought But you know I just kind of left it alone But yeah like super super cool that you know Penn State um is just continuing to hold a really strong position in Virginia recruiting

Andrew:

00:35:39.26 – 00:36:01.11

Um Obviously that’s paid huge dividends for them in the past I mean you see guys like uh like you know K Andre lambert smith and Brenton strange making huge impacts for Penn State on the field And so you know Tony Rose just looks like he’s gonna be continuing that that trend and so yeah he and nick single can can talk about you know how cool it is to be the Gatorade player of the year from their respective states

Vince:

00:36:01.12 – 00:36:07.27

Yeah And I think we kind of almost get a little bit lucky that there’s really no other like

Vince:

00:36:07.71 – 00:36:21.27

really big good football programs in the Northeast or the mid atlantic region So I feel like we kind of benefit a little bit that we don’t have to you know compete as much of as like the florida schools or the texas schools or

Vince:

00:36:21.8 – 00:36:43.46

you know like Alabama auburn and you know have to compete a lot in L S U Geographically being very close and like Ole Miss and Mississippi So I feel like we’re pretty fortunate and like there’s not really a good football program near the level of Penn State outside of like you know Ohio State but everything else like all those states are like east or south of us and really far away from Ohio

Andrew:

00:36:43.47 – 00:36:50.52

I mean that that is true I think it will be interesting to see where Brent pry takes Virginia Tech and

Andrew:

00:36:50.74 – 00:36:55.52

um their recruiting efforts because you know Virginia tech has been a team that’s kind of been

Andrew:

00:36:55.73 – 00:37:20.88

um you know on the downswing for the last couple of years So I think that’s made it a little easier for Penn State to swoop in and get guys like Tony Um and I think you’re right to you know like because you got teams like like I would say the biggest threat in the mid atlantic region right now would probably be Clemson but they’re focused more on like you know the Southeast with like Georgia florida Alabama texas like that

Andrew:

00:37:21.15 – 00:37:31.93

Um Pool of players while also you know snagging a couple of Northeast guys of course But yeah I think I think you’re at the Penn State is positioned pretty nicely in that respect

Vince:

00:37:31.94 – 00:37:47.28

Yeah I feel like we’re even in a good position to get some north Carolina guys I feel like you know anything like Virginia and up we seem to just kind of own and you know maybe we’ll just creep down in north Carolina and just keep

Andrew:

00:37:47.28 – 00:37:48.48

 working at uh

Vince:

00:37:48.49 – 00:37:50.46

you know that that Penn State wave

Andrew:

00:37:50.47 – 00:37:51.11

 right

Andrew:

00:37:52.15 – 00:38:19.54

Um So what else you got man I mean there’s there’s a lot of stuff that’s happened since uh we last got on the pod here So how about you know we just talked about some freshman so Singleton Abdul carter and denied Dennis Sutton were all named to the ESPN freshman all american team So how cool is that Three freshmen Um one of whom you know didn’t even play like that many snaps and denied Dennis Sutton but the ones that he did he made them count

Vince:

00:38:20.1 – 00:38:37.08

Yeah And how wild is it that there could have been more like if you didn’t have k tron alan splitting snaps with Nick Singleton like we we value them both like equally I feel like and Drew Aller was sitting behind sean Clifford all year like let’s say like

Vince:

00:38:37.28 – 00:38:47.17

you know sean would have got hurt like we to the season or something and drew aller played the rest of the season and played just as good as Sean did Like you have to imagine that he’s up there on that team as well

Andrew:

00:38:47.18 – 00:38:49.45

Well yeah I mean especially if he wins the Rose Bowl

Vince:

00:38:49.46 – 00:38:58.97

Yeah Like he wins the Rose bowl and you know he could be there too So uh you know you know grant it’s a it’s a what if but like still there could be you know more and you know

Vince:

00:38:59.28 – 00:39:08.46

some of these positions like safety and corner where we had veterans like maybe we have some guys farther down the death start that are you know really waiting to show their talent So

Andrew:

00:39:08.47 – 00:39:09.12

 right

Vince:

00:39:09.13 – 00:39:11.95

Um you know Sky’s the limit I feel like

Andrew:

00:39:11.96 – 00:39:25.24

absolutely And speaking of showing talent So you know one thing that really came out of the Rose Bowl which was pretty neat was nick Singleton officially getting over 1000 yards rushing on the season And

Andrew:

00:39:25.38 – 00:39:51.12

you know uh this nix a guy who is generating all kinds of buzz from his teammates and nationally Um you had juice Scruggs saying that you know he sees a Heisman in his future So just a guy who’s like no short of hype around him both in Pennsylvania and nationwide and you know I think is really crazy is that um throughout this whole season he had more than 17 carries in a game only once

Andrew:

00:39:51.37 – 00:40:05.31

this season So he’s just a guy who has just been extremely efficient with his touches uh you know obviously that big play ability is there But I mean vince like how crazy is it that we have a guy like this on campus for at least two more years

Vince:

00:40:06.08 – 00:40:24.57

It feels so good to just absolutely you know nail not one but two studs in that position Like it’s just an embarrassment of riches just kind of like we have the linebacker spot and um I don’t know if this is how like you know other of those like Ohio State programs feel but

Vince:

00:40:24.83 – 00:40:30.49

is this like how how Ohio State fans feel like just like we’re loaded everywhere and

Andrew:

00:40:30.5 – 00:40:37.04

you know this is this is like I feel as close to that feeling as I felt in a long time

Andrew:

00:40:37.24 – 00:40:52.13

Um because you know like I was thinking about this earlier today and I’m like man the way that things go I mean Penn State in two years maybe three years time could have two running back selected in the first two rounds of the draft Like if they go together like

Vince:

00:40:52.14 – 00:40:55.22

almost like a Georgia like nick chubb Sony Yeah

Andrew:

00:40:55.23 – 00:40:56.1

 exactly So

Andrew:

00:40:56.11 – 00:41:19.69

you know I can see both of those guys um playing in the NFL like very easily So yeah I mean it’s just it’s crazy to think that you know the pieces are finally clicking together with an offensive line that’s finally made the jump that we’ve been promised for years with running backs that look like Sae kwon and uh and miles Sanders and just you know just the next coming of them And so it’s just

Andrew:

00:41:19.85 – 00:41:22.58

it’s just such a such a nice feeling

Vince:

00:41:22.59 – 00:41:25.07

 just like imagine behind this

Andrew:

00:41:25.5 – 00:41:27.27

 I know

Vince:

00:41:27.28 – 00:41:29.19

 like he

Andrew:

00:41:29.19 – 00:41:31.28

 Would rush for 2000 yards

Vince:

00:41:31.29 – 00:41:32.4

 I

Andrew:

00:41:32.41 – 00:41:34.61

feel very confident in saying that because

Andrew:

00:41:34.81 – 00:42:04.11

like the number of times that I mean like Nick obviously is incredible Um but I think that you know c quan probably breaks a couple of those tackles that maybe Nick got caught in like with the shoestring stuff So yeah I think that he probably takes it to the house like at least like 15 times from 70 plus yards out but you know we can we can play the fun speculation game all we want But speaking of speculation so let me get your thoughts on this here vent So you know obviously like a yearly tradition now with

Andrew:

00:42:04.12 – 00:42:33.43

college football um and especially with michigan football is Jim Harbaugh to NFL coaching rumors because you know as the NFL kind of goes through its yearly cycle you know new coaching spots are becoming available and so there’s all kinds of opinion pieces coming out and rumors that say oh this this coach would be really great for this position and Jim Harbaugh being a guy who’s coached in a Super Bowl has always been linked to these job openings especially as Michigan has kind of regained its prominence

Andrew:

00:42:33.65 – 00:42:59.29

um and you know obviously this most recent run to the college football playoff has not stopped that flow of rumors coming in but now michigan has this added element where they have some incoming um N C A violation allegations coming against them Um And especially ones coming against Jim Harbaugh vince I’ll just I’ll just ask you your guest like do you think that Jim Harbaugh is staying at michigan

Vince:

00:43:00.71 – 00:43:01.72

 Um

Vince:

00:43:02.3 – 00:43:27.67

That’s a good question I haven’t been as up to date on the allegations Um But you know if things are you know kind of coming out and you know we’ve seen coaches leave we’ve seen Pete carroll do that and chip kelly leaving Oregon So you know it’s like it’s happened before it’s not outside the realm of possibility Uh You know I wouldn’t be surprised like if um

Vince:

00:43:28.03 – 00:43:39.87

you know because there’s so many different recruiting violations that you can get in college and you know if hardballs like sleeping over at like you know players houses and stuff like that wouldn’t surprise me if you like

Vince:

00:43:40.39 – 00:43:49.01

you know when outside of you know some rule or whatever that the N C Double A Has it’s it’s like really hard to keep track of there’s a bunch of them But

Vince:

00:43:49.59 – 00:43:59.58

yeah who knows Uh and you know maybe this will you know kind of help even up Penn State with the michigan program to in the future if they get some some scholarships

Andrew:

00:44:00.21 – 00:44:24.0

Yeah You know it’s hard to say like what exactly will come out of this I mean it could all just be a big nothing burger and you know the N C A A Being as listless as they are in certain situations might just you know let this kind of fade away maybe like hit him with a fine or whatever But I just thought it was interesting how there’s like some pete carroll slash USC ness to this

Andrew:

00:44:24.27 – 00:44:37.23

situation where like the allegations are coming no penalties have been assessed yet but there’s a possibility of them you know coach has been linked to um NFL job openings so the parallels are just pretty visual

Vince:

00:44:37.85 – 00:44:41.03

Yeah but you know at the same time it could also just be Clickbait

Andrew:

00:44:41.04 – 00:44:43.01

Yeah Yeah it absolutely could be So

Andrew:

00:44:43.54 – 00:44:52.02

uh we’ll see what happens there Um Some other coaching news Did you see that Kirk was named the offensive coordinator at Rutgers

Vince:

00:44:52.03 – 00:44:57.9

Yeah I hope he does about it just there as he did for us We didn’t score many points with him as R O C

Andrew:

00:44:57.91 – 00:45:04.07

Right Yeah now that that that’s fine I’ll take I’ll take Manny Diaz in that in that matchup

Vince:

00:45:04.08 – 00:45:09.84

Yeah for sure he’s gonna Man Rutgers so happy I’m not Rutgers fan

Vince:

00:45:10.01 – 00:45:13.93

that must be so annoying to like football and just watch your team

Vince:

00:45:14.49 – 00:45:16.21

Win like four games a year

Andrew:

00:45:16.22 – 00:45:26.42

Well I’m gonna knock on wood to that because I don’t want that you know that voodoo come in Penn State’s way But I feel you uh some other some cooler Penn State coaching news

Andrew:

00:45:26.57 – 00:45:54.58

Um not sure if you saw this but former ps you safety Calvin Lowry has returned to the Nittany Lions as an offensive analyst He was most recently at Tulsa where he was coaching the wide receivers and the special teams unit And the reason why I want to shout out him specifically is because I mentioned during our favorite Penn State memories podcast about my fondness for the 2005 Nittany Lions where they won

Andrew:

00:45:54.83 – 00:46:08.41

the Orange Bowl and Calvin Lowry was one of the starting safeties on that team So just kind of like some cool bringing it back around with you know a member of that team coming back to Penn State So welcome onboard Calvin

Vince:

00:46:08.42 – 00:46:22.23

yeah happy to have him and uh you know I think it’s really great to learn from champions and guys who have done it in the past I think uh you know getting successful guys like that in your locker room is always a great idea

Andrew:

00:46:23.13 – 00:46:36.46

Yeah for sure And you know they also have um I believe it’s Alan’s a Midas already on staff He’s uh he’s doing a really fantastic job on the on the defensive side Um as far as recruiting

Andrew:

00:46:36.63 – 00:47:05.56

because you know I seem to see all these stories coming out when when players visit Penn State and all these publications are like oh like how do you like your visit like how do you think this impact your recruiting and stuff like that Like do you think you’ll make a decision soon He’s like oh yeah you know like I have such a great um relationship with Manny Diaz and and Alan has been like really cool with all this So you know he’s really making his his presence felt even after it’s been so long that he’s been on the field so hopefully Calvin will only continue that

Vince:

00:47:06.55 – 00:47:35.82

Yeah And let’s be honest we got uh you know the sooner we find guys to you know fill positions the better and you know we need to keep coming through the pipeline because let’s be honest guys like john cider and my ideas they’re not going to be around many more seasons Uh you know I give it two years tops like they’re going to be head coach candidates they are you know phenomenal coaches and recruiters So you know we’re lucky to have them while we do but you know definitely need to prepare for

Vince:

00:47:35.97 – 00:47:39.03

you know when they start leaving for head coaching positions

Andrew:

00:47:39.04 – 00:48:04.35

Absolutely yeah You know and this is interesting this is going a little off the bulleted list but you know speaking of coaches who are coming in um I think we got to give a big shout out to tie how all the um tight ends coach this year because you know like in the off season last year when TY was named the tight ends coach you know having not played the position having not coached the position

Andrew:

00:48:04.58 – 00:48:27.37

You know I think there is a lot of like speculation of like well all right how is this going to affect the output of the tight ends after you know we’ve we’ve seen some phenomenal years with mike hickey and pat fryer meth and whatnot but you know he did an amazing job So I think the fact that Penn State has a as a young guy like him who does as well as he does and obviously he’s been a force on the recruiting side as well bringing in

Andrew:

00:48:27.54 – 00:48:32.35

Joey shleifer and Andrew wrap like you know he’s doing a phenomenal job to

Vince:

00:48:33.23 – 00:48:33.91

 yep

Andrew:

00:48:33.92 – 00:48:37.16

exactly So it’s uh yeah I got a shot at him as well

Vince:

00:48:37.94 – 00:48:46.58

Yeah like man we are so lucky Like that’s another position We just like have so many good guys Like I feel so fortunate right

Andrew:

00:48:46.59 – 00:48:47.62

 Um

Andrew:

00:48:48.15 – 00:49:02.66

so yeah the last thing that I have on my list here Um so vince you wanna know how many coaches in college football ever have have won the Rose Bowl the Cotton Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl all time

Vince:

00:49:03.27 – 00:49:04.17

 Hmm

Andrew:

00:49:04.22 – 00:49:04.96

 Take a guess

Vince:

00:49:05.57 – 00:49:07.33

Is coach Franklin the only one

Andrew:

00:49:07.9 – 00:49:10.61

he is not but it is a very small number

Vince:

00:49:10.62 – 00:49:12.26

 we’ll say four

Andrew:

00:49:12.27 – 00:49:31.64

You’re close So there are five coaches all time who have won those three rows or those three bowl games one is terry Donahue one is mack brown from texas and north Carolina One is bob stoops from Oklahoma And the other one besides James franklin is joe paterno

Andrew:

00:49:31.87 – 00:49:50.08

So James franklin Yeah James franklin becomes not only the fifth coach to win those three bowl games he becomes the second coach at Penn State to win those particular bowl games So you know when all these you know these pieces come out about trashing franklin calling him a fraud and all that stuff

Vince:

00:49:50.67 – 00:49:51.19

 Yeah

Andrew:

00:49:51.2 – 00:49:59.75

exactly Like the guy the guy’s in rarefied air and he’s uh you know one of he’s one of one who has who has one

Andrew:

00:49:59.93 – 00:50:08.6

The big 10 ever since urban Meyer came to town outside of of Ohio State and Michigan So uh yeah the guy does a pretty darn good job

Vince:

00:50:09.17 – 00:50:17.52

Yeah That’s just wild to think of like only five guys you know achieving that You have like half of the nation whose like fire franklin

Andrew:

00:50:17.53 – 00:50:18.47

 Yeah

Vince:

00:50:18.48 – 00:50:20.51

 we’re really lucky

Andrew:

00:50:20.52 – 00:50:25.26

Yeah It’s amazing how quickly a Rose Bowl championship will quiet that crowd

Vince:

00:50:25.27 – 00:50:38.53

Yeah But you know I think it’s just the it really just shows that you know Penn State that expectations are high and I think that’s a good thing to have high expectations you know for your program And especially when you’re investing all the money and

Vince:

00:50:38.75 – 00:50:43.88

you know tickets and four hours of your weekend every weekend or more

Andrew:

00:50:43.89 – 00:50:45.41

 You’re

Vince:

00:50:47.18 – 00:50:51.0

making all that good food You’re definitely investing a lot more time

Andrew:

00:50:51.01 – 00:50:55.86

You’re talking about like maybe like 14-16 hours

Vince:

00:50:55.87 – 00:51:08.44

Yeah So um you know definitely worth it One more thing before Um you know we you know close this discussion about football is we got we got to give a shout out to Crystal

Vince:

00:51:08.74 – 00:51:09.39

 We

Andrew:

00:51:09.4 – 00:51:10.12

 we

Vince:

00:51:10.12 – 00:51:38.7

forgot about his incredible play It was kind of towards the end of the game when it was over But you know just to like you know put another nail in the coffin of Utah you know he not only does the long snapping you know perfectly all season long His last I think that was his last punt He ends up downing it inside the one yard line to end his career That is absolutely an incredible way to end it for him And

Vince:

00:51:38.83 – 00:51:42.81

you know I think that that like one place symbolizes him as a player

Andrew:

00:51:42.82 – 00:52:02.33

Absolutely I mean he’s a big body too So the fact that he moved down there and was so agile to like have the awareness and down that inside the one that that was his beauty and you know what’s funny is um you know youtube after the Rose Bowl there’s like a ton of videos out there about like Nick’s touchdown run and DeAndre Lambert’s uh

Andrew:

00:52:02.69 – 00:52:12.84

um touchdown catch and stuff like that I saw a video of that play and the title is literally the best play from the Rose Bowl that nobody is talking about So

Andrew:

00:52:13.04 – 00:52:17.4

you know he’s he’s getting recognized for it for sure But yeah we definitely had to shout him out here too

Vince:

00:52:17.41 – 00:52:33.02

Yeah I remember right after the Rose Bowl I was like dang it We’ve got to talk about that like you know right when we hit and record So you know definitely made a note that we need to bring up that amazing play And let’s be honest it’s gonna be fun talking about the Rose Bowl the next like three months when

Andrew:

00:52:33.02 – 00:52:34.23

 we got to talk

Vince:

00:52:34.23 – 00:52:34.94

 about

Andrew:

00:52:34.95 – 00:52:42.67

Yeah Yeah exactly And I mean like what makes it even just that much sweeter is that you know with with playoff expansion on the horizon

Andrew:

00:52:42.88 – 00:53:04.72

Penn State um lays claim to have won the last quote unquote true Rose Bowl in that you know it’s not part of the like the bracket and stuff like that and then it’s like by invitation and stuff like that So just kind of neat that you know that that era of the most historic bowl game ends with Penn State being on top

Vince:

00:53:05.29 – 00:53:09.07

Yeah And uh you know better program to do it

Andrew:

00:53:09.08 – 00:53:15.55

That’s right Uh So you know obviously we we kind of switch up the order a little bit here vince but you want to get into the round table

Vince:

00:53:15.56 – 00:53:31.45

Yeah sure I will do the round table because there’s been a lot of a lot happening in any line Athletics men’s basketball has moved to 11 and five on the season Uh they had to win against Iowa at home 83-79 And I actually almost predicted the exact score of this game

Vince:

00:53:31.66 – 00:54:01.36

I had Penn State winning 83 to 82 Iowa missed like a three pointer in like the last like two seconds It wouldn’t have mattered like how they made it So I was a three pointer away from predicting the correct score and then they lost on the road to michigan by 10 That was relatively competitive game till the end They lost 79 69 then they hosted Purdue number one Purdue in the polestar to they were leading at half 37 to 31 but ultimately fell

Vince:

00:54:01.64 – 00:54:29.29

uh 76 to 63 tomorrow Wednesday seven p.m. On the Big 10 network will be playing indiana at home to try to get back in the win column In the Big 10 conference play The women’s team also has the same record as the men coming in at 11 and five They beat Rutgers over the break 90 to 72 at home They lost at number 14 Michigan on the road 82 to 72 Uh They had more success against Purdue this weekend

Vince:

00:54:29.46 – 00:54:59.15

They won their game 70 to 60 and then they have a couple of road games this week They’ll be at Nebraska playing at eight p.m. On Wednesday and saturday They’ll be playing at number 12 Iowa at 12 30 on the Big 10 network Men’s hockey is continuing to be you know amazing as ever They’re ranked number five in the nation They’re 17 and five over the break They B R I T 6 to 1 And then on New Year’s Eve they beat them at home 3 to 1 That was a great game I went to that one

Vince:

00:54:59.79 – 00:55:28.88

this weekend They’ll be heading to michigan state Uh This was a team that they split with at home so it’ll be interesting to see them play They’ll be playing at friday and saturday at seven p.m. And the saturday matchup will be on the Big 10 network at seven p.m. Women’s hockey stays ranked at number 12 There are 15 8 and one they had a couple of wins versus Long Island University 423 and 4 to 1 They’ll be playing our I T This weekend

Vince:

00:55:29.13 – 00:55:50.09

friday and saturday at home in Pegula ice arena at six p.m. And two p.m. Men’s swimming will be having a home meet men’s and women’s swimming against army at four p.m. Men’s wrestling continue to do men’s wrestling things they move to eight on the season as they want at Wisconsin 28 to 12

Vince:

00:55:50.87 – 00:56:17.58

Men’s volleyball started off their season they won both of their matchups last weekend They beat Central state and number 13 Ohio state 3 to 1 So they’re off to a good start And then this weekend they’ll be playing Damon and Merrimack at seven p.m. Friday and saturday respectively Uh The Damon match will be in the rec hall South Jim and uh Merrimack will be in the main recall jim

Vince:

00:56:17.93 – 00:56:41.79

Men’s gymnastics uh moved to one of them in the season against army They won 402.9 to 378.3 They have an invite at West Point this weekend So that would be a bigger invitational The number 24 women’s gymnastics team started off their season three and two at the Keystone Classic They beat uh Temple and Penn but lost a pit

Vince:

00:56:41.98 – 00:56:58.36

and then the two days later they had a road trip to Denver where they fill up to Denver but beat the texas women’s university uh friday at six p.m. They will have a quad meet in recall versus southern Connecticut state Long island University and Penn

Vince:

00:56:58.88 – 00:57:04.6

And then last but not least my favorite sport track is back There’ll be uh

Vince:

00:57:05.33 – 00:57:23.88

at the Ashenfelter track that is saturday they actually have a series where you know people you know around the area can participate in a mile So I’ll be racing Uh you know some of the Penn State club track kids at their meat So that’ll be a good time and

Vince:

00:57:24.02 – 00:57:47.04

I look forward to racing that So a lot of lot of Penn State sports going on We got uh you know basketball and hockey and swimming going on like always and wrestling but we also got the men’s volleyball and gymnastics starting up and you know track so lots of fun sports to continue this year And we also have lacrosse and softball and baseball coming in So lots of fun sports So you know even in the off season

Vince:

00:57:47.05 – 00:57:50.68

and we’ll have a lot of great content here for you on the podcast

Andrew:

00:57:50.68 – 00:58:10.08

That’s right yeah and I got a shot at you and Maggie for bringing in some really nice breakdowns of the Nittany Lion men’s basketball games Uh you know it’s been a it’s been a treat to see you guys kind of tag team in uh that analysis of the game So I hope that you know Maggie’s been enjoying being on the pot as much as you and I do

Vince:

00:58:10.09 – 00:58:16.67

yeah and it’s it’s a great thing to be a part of and the more people we add to the blues community the better

Andrew:

00:58:16.83 – 00:58:29.22

That’s right And uh you know one thing I do want to shout out you know while we are on this particular podcast is merch you know so being a part of that community joining the Nittany Blues crew

Andrew:

00:58:29.44 – 00:58:33.82

you know work in progress name of that group of fans but

Vince:

00:58:35.71 – 00:58:36.1

 cool

Andrew:

00:58:36.11 – 00:58:56.18

alright yeah that then it’s stuck Um yeah so we we recently released a new shirt that was inspired by the wing T formation that was used in the Rose Bowl that kurt and chris faour just really gushed about right before nick Singleton worked his way into the end zone and stuff like that

Andrew:

00:58:56.31 – 00:59:10.92

I personally think it’s uh it’s really clean Um you know so it’s uh got the numbers of sean Clifford uh K tron allen nick Singleton and Brenton strange as they were in that formation And it also has chris Fowler’s amazing quote from it

Andrew:

00:59:11.11 – 00:59:35.86

Uh so go ahead and get your zits at any blues dot com slash shop And we also have a promo code running in january just to celebrate the Rose Bowl victory So if you use the code rose champ 10 you’ll get 10% off your entire order Not just on the uh the Rose Bowl t shirt We’ve also added some new products to the store In addition to that we now have many blues stickers um

Andrew:

00:59:36.37 – 00:59:42.07

in addition to the regular selection of t shirts and hoodies and sweatshirts so go and get yours

Vince:

00:59:42.62 – 00:59:58.23

Yeah I know I’ll begin one For sure I love the design It’s uh you know clean the wing T was just really special this year That was like the one formation that seemed to work every time So I think it’s a really cool t shirt design and uh kudos to you for putting together an awesome t shirt

Andrew:

00:59:58.84 – 01:00:03.18

Well thanks It’s it’s easy when I get such great inspiration from the team

Vince:

01:00:03.19 – 01:00:04.57

 Yeah So

Andrew:

01:00:04.57 – 01:00:06.81

what else you got man anything else on your plate

Vince:

01:00:06.82 – 01:00:17.79

Yeah I exhausted the round table but I’ll be going to the basketball game tomorrow with Maggie so we’ll definitely be enjoying that and hopefully hopefully to get a win over the hoosiers What

Andrew:

01:00:17.79 – 01:00:18.5

 do you predict

Vince:

01:00:19.23 – 01:00:45.76

I I did predict us to lose spoiler alert in the pod 84 to 79 However it’s kind of one of those games where I could see going either way Indiana is very hungry for a win there one and three in Big 10 play So they’re looking at you know stay competitive within the conference However they’re still banged up they have a couple of seniors with injuries so they got some younger guys trying to

Vince:

01:00:45.99 – 01:01:02.33

you know play and learn how to play at that high level I do know that one of the players race Thompson he’s not gonna be back So you know for sure So I think Penn State could potentially take advantage of whose your team that’s a little bit banged up injury wise

Andrew:

01:01:02.34 – 01:01:09.32

Gotcha Uh am I crazy Or did I see that Purdue dropped from number one in the most recent rankings

Vince:

01:01:09.33 – 01:01:13.85

So that could be true because they lost earlier in the week to Rutgers

Andrew:

01:01:13.86 – 01:01:14.85

 Okay

Vince:

01:01:15.19 – 01:01:27.59

Yeah they had a home game against Rutgers and lost 65-60 for so you know they’re they’re kind of competing with a couple of the other teams that have one or two losses and they might have went down a spot or two

Andrew:

01:01:28.04 – 01:01:34.66

How is it that Rutgers is able to get these like wins over number one teams in basketball

Vince:

01:01:34.67 – 01:01:56.38

Rutgers is a really sneaky good basketball program Uh they’ve they’ve made the transition to the big 10 a lot better than the football team has So I think we’re just so used to kind of ragging on their football team that we we underestimate a little bit of that They’re a respectable basketball program

Andrew:

01:01:56.67 – 01:02:09.87

Well yeah it’ll be interesting to see what happens tomorrow night Obviously looking forward to your breakdown of that But uh um any thoughts on the eagle snagging the number one seed in the NFC

Vince:

01:02:09.88 – 01:02:14.69

You know earmuffs 1 2 3 It’s about damn time

Andrew:

01:02:14.7 – 01:02:19.45

Yeah Oh my God Yeah after three attempts

Vince:

01:02:20.17 – 01:02:49.4

Yeah So I really hurt I wish they would have won that Saints game and got the rest of the guys this this last week Um that also would have helped their draft pick position They would have had the number seven or eight pick instead of number 10 So they really shot themselves in the foot with the all the mistakes they had Mac games So you know it’ll hurt the draft position a little bit It’ll make our chances for Joey porter JR go down a little bit But you know hopefully Howard Roseman has some tricks up his sleeve

Andrew:

01:02:49.53 – 01:03:01.67

And uh you know I’m hoping for some repeat magic from 2017 where I was like you know the way that the team was going into the offseason was a little uncertain you know with them

Andrew:

01:03:01.9 – 01:03:25.26

like securing the number one spot but you know they lost that final game against Dallas and then they had just a nail biter against the falcons and then obviously we know what happened with the rest of the playoffs and stuff like that So I’m kind of hoping that you know history repeats itself because the team does not have its best football going for them right now But hopefully this week off kind of helps them uh right the ship a little bit

Vince:

01:03:25.56 – 01:03:39.4

Yeah because they really in that year they won the Super Bowl they started off a little slow they were two and two to start the season but you know and then they got in this big role they were 13 and three I think

Vince:

01:03:39.86 – 01:04:08.23

uh to secure the number one seed I believe And then they you know they’re playing good football at that time and you know getting wins and they kind of came in hot and they’re kind of doing the opposite now However um we do see some players getting healthier we’re expecting lane johnson to get back And I think a lot of people underestimate how good he is as a player like the eagles win percentage without him playing is like 33% or he might even be lower than that So

Vince:

01:04:08.44 – 01:04:12.91

um to get him back hopefully his uh I think he had a torn

Vince:

01:04:14.01 – 01:04:42.51

torn tendon in his oblique or is somewhere so like I don’t I don’t know like what the timeline is for that type of injury but to be a good offensive line and you definitely have to have a strong core to like you know hold off those pass rushers So I imagine it’s uh you know gonna be painful I’m glad he gets a couple of weeks to rest a couple an extra week to rest up You know how we lost the game So uh you know hopefully he’s healthy and uh you know able to get through the season

Andrew:

01:04:42.95 – 01:04:46.86

Who would you rather see in the divisional round between the Bucks and the cowboys

Vince:

01:04:47.57 – 01:04:50.02

 That’s a good question I think

Vince:

01:04:50.94 – 01:05:08.03

I think the the cowboys are a better team So I think it would be good to see the Bucks and it also be nice to potentially send tom brady into retirement at the link That would be kind of a fun place for tom brady to play his last game I think so

Andrew:

01:05:08.04 – 01:05:12.15

Getting to oblivion by the Lincoln financial crowd Yeah

Vince:

01:05:12.15 – 01:05:18.48

I think that would be a lot of fun However I definitely wouldn’t mind beating up Dallas and uh

Vince:

01:05:18.68 – 01:05:23.38

you know taking them to the wood shed after like they were bragging about beating our

Andrew:

01:05:23.39 – 01:05:24.44

 backup back

Vince:

01:05:24.44 – 01:05:25.6

 So

Vince:

01:05:26.33 – 01:05:31.51

yeah uh definitely would be nice to uh it’s always good to stick it to the cowboys

Andrew:

01:05:31.52 – 01:05:33.11

 Yeah Amen to that So

Vince:

01:05:33.12 – 01:05:40.16

and who knows maybe we see the Giants or uh wouldn’t have given the seven See the Seahawks Right

Andrew:

01:05:40.17 – 01:05:42.41

Yeah it was the Seahawks Yeah

Vince:

01:05:42.42 – 01:05:48.16

So maybe we’ll see get some revenge against the Seahawks after they gave Carson Wentz a concussion

Andrew:

01:05:49.25 – 01:05:59.62

Yeah maybe I mean there’s a couple of different storylines there but yeah it’s just nice that the birds are getting this week off So anything else that you want to mention here or should we get out of here
