Welcome back to the Nittany Blues podcast Today we are here to recap Penn State’s tough loss at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor 79 to 69 this was a action packed game There were a were a lot of runs by both teams But in the end it was Michigan who made the last run as Penn State has fallen to three and 23 all time at the Crisler center Maggie What are your first thoughts and overall impressions of the game

Maggie:

00:00:30.54 – 00:00:55.77

Yeah it definitely I think was a closer game than the score might have indicated And it was a game where we saw teams go on you know 10 15 point runs and really you know Penn State was really able to bring the momentum back in their favor and then it would just be Michigan’s turn and back and forth and back and forth And Michigan just

Maggie:

00:00:56.07 – 00:01:12.12

Was able to end on a hot streak and pull away on a high note But on the bright side we did not get a 12 minute scoring drought So you know and the only only go up from there so better than last year Yeah

Vince:

00:01:12.13 – 00:01:25.79

No 12 minute scoring drought So that was good That’s something I hope I never have to watch again when I’m watching Penn State basketball This was a really intense game I felt like

Vince:

00:01:26.15 – 00:01:54.83

this is the first time I watched a game where I felt like Penn State more lost this game because Michigan was good compared to just some airs and in a close game So uh that that’s definitely how I felt it really from the get go You could tell Michigan had great energy defensively they they were able to create a couple turnovers And an interesting stat we learned tonight was that Penn State

Vince:

00:01:55.0 – 00:02:12.3

has the fewest turnovers per game uh in in the N C Double A So you know that’s definitely a credit to coach screws and really emphasizing the team to take care of the basketball So that was a bright spot tonight Um However michigan

Maggie:

00:02:12.5 – 00:02:17.28

I didn’t think that would be the team with the fewest turnovers

Vince:

00:02:17.28 – 00:02:21.18

Yeah I was like there must be one team that can you know that’s better you know because

Vince:

00:02:21.34 – 00:02:41.35

you know we don’t necessarily have a not a lot of natural ball handlers like guys like Jalen Pickett and Kanye Clary Um but uh you know you know overall as a team they’ve done a good job taking care of the ball and you know that’s definitely attributed to their success However michigan

Vince:

00:02:41.57 – 00:03:06.43

uh you know they were really good offensively tonight There you know tough to stop We had you know Hunter Dickinson he was 7 to 1 a lot of times was guarded by 64 Jalen Pickett or 64 miles Dredd And you know michigan uh you know did a lot of work in the pain and drawing fouls Penn State committed 20 fouls today and

Vince:

00:03:06.61 – 00:03:33.74

Um interestingly the wolverines weren’t really great from the free throw line they were only 68% Not really knocking down a ton of free throws but they were really efficient from uh downtown They hit 40 of the threes they were eight for 19 whereas Penn State was only nine for 28 in the game Uh you know the first half woes uh you know definitely coming from our transfer guys Andrew funk just could not get going

Vince:

00:03:33.97 – 00:03:48.36

Uh he was oh for four in the first half and cam winter really struggled early on Really The guy who kept us in the game early on was Seth lundy you know he was locked and loaded from three Uh he took

Vince:

00:03:49.13 – 00:04:09.42

10 3 point attempts throughout this game and you know at least seven of those must have been in the first half So he really was crucial for keeping Penn State in the game early Uh Jalen Pickett he did have a couple of mistakes tonight and you know he did look a little frazzled at times but

Vince:

00:04:09.59 – 00:04:22.0

you know that was definitely a credit to Michigan’s defense in the second half He he definitely looked more like himself in the first half He definitely got his he was you know pretty efficient in terms of his field goal percentage But

Vince:

00:04:22.18 – 00:04:51.08

you know you could tell there were times where Michigan was you know double teaming and making him comfortable and then Penn State was you know having to sell for a contested three pointer or you know a fade away you know at the mid range so that was definitely a credit to michigan’s defense early a positive sign a couple positives in this game in the first half Miles Dredd did hit a three pointer to score his 2000 point

Vince:

00:04:51.27 – 00:05:08.05

as in any line So uh you know congratulations to Miles Red that’s a you know elite club to be a part of and to do it in his home state of Michigan must be really cool So you know kudos to him and another positive we got was off the bench

Vince:

00:05:08.32 – 00:05:34.86

he had 17 minutes tonight he had seven points three rebounds one assist he was three or four from the field one of two from three And that three pointer was kinda while that was a uh you know buzzer beater half court shot right before the half Maggie what were your thoughts on the shot and how you thought the momentum would carry Penn State going into the half

Maggie:

00:05:35.04 – 00:05:57.38

Well we were so excited to see that Mahaffey shot and I’ve been taking notes on some things that I wanted to bring up in the pod I was like oh I gotta write the Mahaffey half court three down and Vince was like you think you’re going to forget that because that was just a real just a fun thing to see And I think

Maggie:

00:05:57.82 – 00:06:24.17

you know is a guy that we’ve been really rooting for all season to step up and we we saw him really initiate a couple of big momentum changes there was a few plays like he made a few good defensive stops he got a nice dunk and then you know like to end the half on that three we were just so excited about my bullish on Mahaffey

Maggie:

00:06:24.47 – 00:06:45.79

and we think that really led into the Nittany Lions strong first five minutes coming out of the half and yeah just a great great note for him to come come into his own on I think we really saw the offensive and defensive behavior emergence tonight

Vince:

00:06:46.12 – 00:07:14.62

Yeah And with with how the first half was rolling and michigan getting off to a pretty hot start and things not necessarily going Penn State’s way the fact that they were able to cut it from 11 to single digits heading into the half um that definitely makes you feel a lot better heading into the locker room because and you can make adjustments coach screws can really contribute to see what he’s seeing seeing there and you get more time with the team as opposed to a 32nd time out So

Vince:

00:07:14.81 – 00:07:38.9

you know Penn State definitely did respond better in the second half In the first half they gave up 42 points and the second half they gave up 37 so nice improvement there And you know kind of towards the end of the game a lot of that was you know intentional fouls and free throws So you know overall this this was uh yeah good performance out of the half you know they were pretty good uh you know the first couple of minutes uh

Vince:

00:07:39.13 – 00:07:59.58

both teams kind of exchanged a few baskets then Penn State went on an 11 and run to type game 47 all And then you know from that point on it was just all Wolverines they went on this insane 14 0 run there were some Penn State turnovers Um

Vince:

00:07:59.85 – 00:08:26.71

you know you saw Michigan getting some second chance opportunities off of offensive rebounds in the first half Uh you know I thought Penn State actually rebounded pretty well they did get out rebounded but you know Michigan was not getting those offensive rebounds which those are the uh the worst ones you can give up because you know one you know the other team gets to shoot the ball again but to uh you know I don’t have an exact statistic but

Vince:

00:08:26.87 – 00:08:44.35

uh you know when teams shoot three pointers off of offensive rebounds that’s like right where you want the ball as a shooter because you have your momentum carrying you right towards the basket and you know when the ball is coming in so it’s almost just like you know shoot your shoot team shoot around

Vince:

00:08:44.57 – 00:09:05.63

So you know that’s where shooters love to get the ball off the offensive rebound I wish there was a you know official stat for that but you know when I watched games that the percentage is significantly higher shooting three pointers off an offensive rebound So that was something michigan did take advantage of during that 14 over on um you know at that point in the game you just kind of knew that

Vince:

00:09:05.94 – 00:09:29.42

Michigan was going to win and just kind of have that gut feeling But you know craig’s Penn State they fought back they went on an 11 hour on A lot of that was Andrew funk He finally got going in the second half along with cam winter they started to play more like themselves offensively So you know you saw Andrew uh doing some mid range jumpers and

Vince:

00:09:29.86 – 00:09:40.33

getting that going since the threes weren’t falling So that was something I’d like to see I’d like to see him actually do that more when he’s not hitting shots early on just get a couple of mid range jumpers in and

Vince:

00:09:41.11 – 00:10:10.77

you know getting the flow of the game So that was something that was good to see Seth lundy made a crazy step back three in the corner So he took one or two dribbles in backed it out and you know his weight was shifting backwards in the corner I was like no don’t shoot that and then drained that three So that was an incredibly tough shot you know for part of that run Yeah so Penn State made a 2nd 11 hour run to cut it to three points and then the last you know

Vince:

00:10:11.27 – 00:10:21.95

a little over a minute You know it was all wolverines they ended the game on a seven oh run and ended up being 79 to 69 in favor of the wolverines at the end

Maggie:

00:10:21.96 – 00:10:33.52

Yeah I mean it’s just tough when we don’t have a player that can answer um what was his name The

Vince:

00:10:33.53 – 00:10:34.08

 Hunter

Maggie:

00:10:34.33 – 00:10:36.06

 Hunter Dickinson

Maggie:

00:10:36.73 – 00:10:59.06

You know we don’t have a player that can answer him offensively and defensively we had you know miles Dredd when when it’s swinging fouled out Um so we we love to see the heart and the hustle there but you know that that’s a really tough matchup to guard when you are what seven inches

Maggie:

00:11:00.0 – 00:11:01.04

 shorter than

Maggie:

00:11:01.75 – 00:11:25.75

the guy you’re playing against So it’s um you know it’s just you can really see that Hunter Dickinson is a tough and talented player and I think he’s he’s done so much for the wolverines and I think he has you know he’s going to continue to do so much more but going up against him when you don’t have someone that can really lock him down and you don’t have someone that can really

Maggie:

00:11:26.5 – 00:11:54.57

you know move aggressively against him on offense is tough So that’s I think definitely been a vulnerability for Penn State this whole season And then a lot of games we’ve kind of been able to get away with not addressing that You know we’ve been able to you know work with a really small lineup in a aggressive three point shooting rotation and we have some guys on defense that can really

Maggie:

00:11:54.83 – 00:12:14.31

you know really play their heart out and make a few a few big stops but I think this was the first time that we’ve really come up against a player as dominant as Hunter Dickinson and the first time that we really like felt that that was I guess I just felt that we didn’t have an answer to that

Maggie:

00:12:14.6 – 00:12:15.58

 What do you think

Vince:

00:12:15.59 – 00:12:31.57

Um I I actually thought that they did pretty well defensively overall given the circumstances you know picked it solid you know miles as solid about as good as you can do and you know part of that is that they’re both mentally and physically tough and you know

Vince:

00:12:32.26 – 00:12:41.01

you know there’s times in basketball where you know someone is seven ft tall but they play it like they’re 66 and you can have someone who is six ft tall who plays like their 66 So

Vince:

00:12:41.22 – 00:13:03.81

um you know definitely with how they play you know you know their physicality and toughness you can definitely play bigger um you know with the wingspan that you know that player is gonna you know it’s gonna be easier for them to score and block shots and whatever but you know physically I thought they did pretty well sort of like kevin Mahaffey guarding the center you know this year just with the roster that we

Vince:

00:13:03.82 – 00:13:31.3

have he is 66 and has a really really long wingspan and you can jump really really high So uh you know if you’re giving up some interest to someone and you can jump high um that helps a little bit So you know overall the that those are my thoughts on those guys I thought did an all right job defensively tonight however you didn’t get anything offensively from him You did see him try to be aggressive and dunk the basketball however 100 Dickinson

Vince:

00:13:31.55 – 00:13:42.14

I met him at the rim and said not in my house So uh you know that was a definitely a big welcome to the big 10 moment for caba you know so you know that was tough to see and

Maggie:

00:13:42.92 – 00:13:43.11

 you

Vince:

00:13:43.11 – 00:14:11.05

know he just hasn’t quite blossom offensively in a while and he’s been in a little bit of a rut you know he got fouled and free throws Um you know I don’t know why but the freshman seemed to be struggling free throws this year and that’s something you wouldn’t necessarily think that they would have a hard time with granted that that’s kind of the only thing that doesn’t change as you go from high school to college basketball you’re you’re still 15 ft away and

Vince:

00:14:11.49 – 00:14:29.5

and everything like you know the rooms might be a little different Um you know than the high school gyms but you’re still 15 ft away it might be a little louder because of the fans but you know at the end of the day it’s a 15 ft shot and you just gotta you know be mentally locked in do your free third routine and you know shoot the ball So

Vince:

00:14:29.73 – 00:14:48.19

um that’s an area I hope that you know the young guys improve that the free throw percentage I’d really like to see that Um I always feel like I’m holding my breath but uh hopefully as the season rolls along uh you know the guys grow and the upperclassmen can help pull them along and help them grow because uh you know

Vince:

00:14:48.52 – 00:15:02.38

Uh we’re not in Kansas anymore we’re in the big 10 So you know they got to put on their big boy pants and you know execute a higher level to win You know tough big 10 road games like this because it’s not all going to come as easy as Illinois

Maggie:

00:15:02.38 – 00:15:02.86

 did

Maggie:

00:15:03.46 – 00:15:05.89

I guess they don’t really have anything else to say

Maggie:

00:15:06.85 – 00:15:13.91

I mean there there are definitely highlights in this game and I think there were some flashes and some

Maggie:

00:15:14.73 – 00:15:20.43

some moments where I felt like oh man maybe they can actually pull this off but

Maggie:

00:15:21.17 – 00:15:32.61

who knows maybe this is the kind of game that they would win next year I feel like I always like to zoom out a little bit and look at the progression from season to season and it seems like

Maggie:

00:15:33.2 – 00:15:41.23

you know this was a tough loss last year Maybe a little closer not necessarily score wise but

Maggie:

00:15:41.9 – 00:15:50.78

maybe closer like just game play wise this year and maybe next year this will be a win for Penn State

Vince:

00:15:50.79 – 00:16:02.31

Yeah and and it is tough but you know you got to give credit to Penn State Uh they never forwarded in this game you know they played tough it reminded me a little bit of the Virginia tech game

Vince:

00:16:02.49 – 00:16:19.43

In a way you know they they were down 18 early and then they came back they tied it up and then ultimately fell short at the end Kind of the same thing happened here So you know definitely you know when they were coming back they’re like okay they can do this But

Vince:

00:16:19.65 – 00:16:44.65

uh michigan seemed to always have a response when Penn State was trying to take over the game So you definitely have to give credit to to the Wolverines They did a good job I am happy that we will get to see them at the end of the month Uh sunday that january 29th will be back for a new tip off in the B J C And we’ll get to play in our house So you know it would be nice to you know try to get some payback and

Vince:

00:16:44.79 – 00:17:11.78

you know see if we can beat the Wolverines However Penn State does have a brutal gauntlet Uh you know and it starts sunday at you know the birthplace of college basketball at the polestar a in philadelphia So the last time Penn State player there was 2017 they played the Michigan state Spartans who was highly ranked at the time and upset the Spartans Maggie are How excited are you to check out Penn State and

Vince:

00:17:11.91 – 00:17:13.81

you know their game against Purdue this weekend

Maggie:

00:17:13.91 – 00:17:17.0

I’m really excited to watch it I think

Maggie:

00:17:17.83 – 00:17:37.46

I guess I don’t ever recall watching a college basketball game and like realizing it was in the cholesterol But I guess my college basketball focus has always been pulled a little more towards New England So I haven’t seen a lot going down in the polestar a and and

Vince:

00:17:37.96 – 00:17:54.82

the cholesterol you know that they’ve hosted more teams than any venue in college basketball as well as hosting more NC double a tournament games than any venue in college basketball So you know the palestra is definitely a special place has a special energy

Vince:

00:17:54.99 – 00:18:08.68

The seats are pretty much right up against the court and the benches so there’s not as much separation as more modern arenas So really looking forward to that Um Yeah so you got Purdue

Vince:

00:18:09.48 – 00:18:34.41

and then on Wednesday they’ll be home versus number 15 indiana before traveling on the road to face uh number 14 Wisconsin So that would be a brutal three game stretch And then after that they have Nebraska who I think is really under ranked in the big 10 you know they’re really good program and Rutgers who just beat number one produce So these next five games are going to be

Vince:

00:18:34.57 – 00:18:54.81

almost like a deaf gauntlet for Penn State And if they can win three of these games I think that will definitely be a win because the Big 10 is a really competitive conference and a lot of those teams are going to get to the N C double A tournament So uh this is definitely about winning as many games as you can I do feel like the

Vince:

00:18:54.96 – 00:19:21.45

Michigan State lost at home definitely hurts a lot worse than the road loss at Michigan because home field advantage is so important in the big 10 Uh a few years ago I saw a stat and I think you know in that particular season somewhere around like 80 or 82% of teams that were home one So it’s really tough to win on the road in the big 10

Vince:

00:19:21.63 – 00:19:46.21

So you know you can’t fall Penn State Uh you know things didn’t fall the way tonight you know three point percentage wise they were at 32% which is just dip below their average You know they can definitely shoot you know in the forties they didn’t have to be competitive but not quite good over the top Um so looking looking more towards Purdue uh

Vince:

00:19:47.18 – 00:20:16.15

you know Zack Edie is definitely the main focus and um kind of one thing that I saw today in the Michigan game before we go to that that I forgot to mention is I was really surprised that we had Jalen Pickett going at Hunter Dickinson offensively you know at that end of the floor and Jalen Pickett actually did a pretty good job scoring against Hunter Dickinson and it kind of looks easier than it should have You know a guy his size you know going to the paint and scoring on

Vince:

00:20:16.7 – 00:20:18.2

 100 Dickinson

Vince:

00:20:18.8 – 00:20:40.25

Zach et is a little bit of a different story We talked about how how much of a matchup Hunter Dickinson was at 71 to 60 Zack Edie is 74 and £295 Um what are your initial thoughts about this matchup with Zaki

Maggie:

00:20:41.0 – 00:20:48.66

I mean Hunter Dickinson seems like a good warm up Did we see Zach play last year or is he knew to Purdue

Vince:

00:20:49.27 – 00:21:15.85

So he he’s been at Purdue We we did not go to that game last year but yeah he is definitely not new to the program He is a phenomenal player Uh so he averages over 20 points a game He averages 13 rebounds and over two blocks Really good basketball player And

Vince:

00:21:16.27 – 00:21:19.36

this team runs through Zacky Yes so you

Maggie:

00:21:19.36 – 00:21:20.83

 have uh

Vince:

00:21:20.84 – 00:21:44.17

over 21 points Game 13.4 rebounds Really good basketball player out of Toronto Ontario And yeah he is definitely the focal point of the team One thing that Rutgers had success doing was getting him in foul trouble So when he was off the court Rutgers was really able to take advantage

Vince:

00:21:44.36 – 00:21:53.15

And you know make some runs and that ultimately ended up giving them a 65-64 victory over Purdue So

Maggie:

00:21:53.16 – 00:21:57.61

Because we didn’t Penn State play pretty when the big 10

Vince:

00:21:57.62 – 00:21:59.12

 Yes they did play in

Maggie:

00:21:59.12 – 00:22:01.58

 the in the playoffs

Vince:

00:22:01.59 – 00:22:04.77

Yes they played in the Big 10 tournament last year and lost

Maggie:

00:22:04.78 – 00:22:07.63

Okay because seeing his face now I remember watching him

Vince:

00:22:07.78 – 00:22:18.09

Yeah and and you know last year Penn State was really competitive with Purdue They were actually leaving Purdue at home until the last about 3.5 minutes of the game So

Vince:

00:22:19.06 – 00:22:27.56

Penn State has really been competitive with Purdue zack Edie I think if we have Jalen Pickett trying to go at him

Vince:

00:22:28.65 – 00:22:51.47

like we did with Hunter Dickinson and trying to you know set some screens to create that match up I think that is the best way to try to get Zach et and foul trouble just like Rutgers did and I do think that that is you know the formula for success versus this Purdue team because he is by far their best player Um we also

Vince:

00:22:51.95 – 00:23:03.07

this is kind of a weakness for us so if we can get that player off the floor get him in foul trouble I do think that can kind of even the odds and Penn State trying to knock off the number one ranked Purdue

Maggie:

00:23:03.07 – 00:23:08.38

team Who else on Purdue should we know about going into the game

Vince:

00:23:08.39 – 00:23:21.4

Yeah so Purdue is a very deep team They typically play 10 guys every game One guy I was looking at was Brandon smith He’s a freshman at six ft 1 80 so kind of the opposite end

Vince:

00:23:21.95 – 00:23:50.55

of you know this size spectrum you could say and he’s their best best shooter He’s over 40% from the three point line he’s close to 90% from the free throw line So and he’s a good shooter And when you have a guy like Zack Edie who is going to command double teams in the post when you have the ball because he is so good that can create other opportunities for shooters on your team So Penn State is going to have to figure out do we want

Vince:

00:23:50.75 – 00:24:19.41

Zaki do to get his and you know playing one on one or do we want to you know double team him constantly and make him pass the ball right away and you know see if you can shoot I think doubling him and trying to make life difficult for him That’s the way to go Just even not letting him get the ball in the post in the first place Um I think if coach truce throws together a good plan for CUBA and CUBA steps up

Vince:

00:24:19.56 – 00:24:29.36

and was able to stop him from getting the ball in the low post Um you know that would definitely be really beneficial to the team So you know has a good game it’s going to be a good day for the

Maggie:

00:24:29.36 – 00:24:47.21

lines Yeah well the broadcasters on today’s game we’re saying that coach Bruce is like a mad scientist remember there’s like in the lab making new concoctions of players and you know just all these different rotations that he’s putting together So I think

Maggie:

00:24:47.73 – 00:24:50.3

I think coach Cruz will not be afraid to

Maggie:

00:24:51.09 – 00:24:53.69

to do something creative and to really

Maggie:

00:24:54.54 – 00:25:00.26

you know and then also not be afraid to change his strategy if it’s not working out

Vince:

00:25:00.27 – 00:25:22.31

Yeah he definitely has a really good basketball mind I was actually uh talking to my friend Will about this the other day and we were both kind of in agreement that we’re worried about coach shrews kind of out coaching himself for this job So maybe potentially leaving to a blue blood of college basketball like uh

Vince:

00:25:22.81 – 00:25:49.02

you know like a Kansas or Kentucky you know a program more up there You know if something were to happen in one of those programs where a guy leaves and maybe he goes there or you know maybe an M B A Position he spent you know several years as an assistant coach on the boston Celtics under brad stevens So um he has experienced that level as well so he’s he’s almost doing so well you know I’m almost worried about him you know out coaching himself here and then getting an even better job

Vince:

00:25:49.18 – 00:26:08.81

Uh so you know definitely hope he stays But I do look forward to seeing the game plan Coach Ruskin cox you know in the lab in the lab and you know going to the polestar a and seeing if he can counter in the magic of the polestar a and uh seeing if that helps spend state So

Vince:

00:26:09.48 – 00:26:17.89

I actually do think we forgot So we’ll move on to communion predictions for Purdue What do you got in terms of a communion production for

Maggie:

00:26:17.89 – 00:26:35.39

us prediction Um let’s see I predict we get a really big Kepa block just like he shuts down someone kind of like in the way he was shut down today he gets his his revenge

Vince:

00:26:35.71 – 00:26:40.56

That’s nice I like to hear that Is that is that going to be on Zach Edie

Maggie:

00:26:41.19 – 00:26:43.02

 Okay

Vince:

00:26:43.02 – 00:26:43.2

 so

Maggie:

00:26:43.21 – 00:26:44.37

 you have it

Vince:

00:26:44.37 – 00:26:54.58

here Maggie’s comedian prediction is that kevin guy is going to have a big big block on Zach Edie Uh only need one So

Vince:

00:26:54.84 – 00:27:15.05

that’s a really good one with my communion prediction I’m going to go to a Philly guy since this game is going to be played in Philly I’m gonna go to former Drexel point guard cam Cameron Winter and I predict that he will have a double double he played at Drexel So that meant he was part of the rivalry game

Vince:

00:27:15.31 – 00:27:39.66

Uh you know the battle for 33rd street and that’s the game that’s played annually between Drexel university and Penn who plays all their home games at the Polestar to and they played there every single year until 2015 I believe and then they Drexel wanted to alternate and you know go in their gym so they’ve been back and forth ever since but you know that’s a big rivalry game So Cameron Winter is very familiar

Vince:

00:27:39.8 – 00:28:07.21

with you know the Polestar a so I think he’s going to have one of his best games of the season I’m gonna say a double double but I wouldn’t be surprised if he has 20 plus points So I might even say actually 2020 plus 20 points or more and uh we’ll say 10 rebounds So I think that’s going to be the double double you see from Canberra winter former Drexel guard Philly guy you know it’s gonna happen So that’s my prediction

Maggie:

00:28:07.63 – 00:28:10.01

Are they gonna do some fun uniforms

Vince:

00:28:10.63 – 00:28:26.51

Um I’m not sure I haven’t heard anything I know do you know they have those alternates that they were against michigan state that was blue uniforms and in the middle they kinda had the P S U Logo in the past Penn State has had black and pink uniforms too

Vince:

00:28:26.7 – 00:28:55.39

reminisce the old jersey So before Penn State was blue and white Actually a lot of people don’t know this story is their football uniforms were supposed to be black and pink however when they put it in the laundry it came out blue and white so the colors for whatever reason kept kept coming out So and they’re like hey these look pretty good So they just went with the navy blue and the white and you know here we are with these you know clean looking

Vince:

00:28:55.62 – 00:28:57.46

 navy blue and white uniforms

Maggie:

00:28:57.6 – 00:29:01.42

It looks good but it was also fun to see the Northwestern

Maggie:

00:29:01.96 – 00:29:03.85

 city of Chicago uniforms

Vince:

00:29:03.86 – 00:29:22.04

Yeah So before we came up to for this we’re looking at the you know the land of Lincoln game between Illinois and Northwestern and they definitely Northwestern had some cool kind of Chicago style uniforms The colors were more in the scheme of the Chicago flag

Vince:

00:29:22.55 – 00:29:26.66

Yeah so don’t ask for ketchup if you’re getting a hot dog there

Vince:

00:29:27.34 – 00:29:37.61

You know because that is Chicago’s big 10 team But yeah definitely Pretty cool So we’ll see if they break out any new uniforms but final score What do you got for this game

Maggie:

00:29:38.16 – 00:29:43.37

Oh gosh I think it’s going to be very close and I’m going to say

Maggie:

00:29:43.98 – 00:29:50.73

Oh Penn State 78 per do 76

Vince:

00:29:51.54 – 00:29:53.35

Okay so Penn State wins by two

Maggie:

00:29:53.35 – 00:29:54.2

 points

Vince:

00:29:54.21 – 00:30:14.82

Alright so before we wrap up the show with my prediction I did realize we forgot to hand out player awards for this past game and I know we’re a little bit disappointed out of the loss against michigan So it might have floated our minds but who do you have for your Mahoney mauler verse is michigan

Vince:

00:30:15.35 – 00:30:42.08

that’s a very good choice He’s definitely stepped up yet again I gave him the bird brawler award in their last game versus Iowa I’ve been really impressed with his growth and performance He’s kind of always been good on the defensive end However now we’re starting to see him get involved a little bit more in the offense So that’s something I’m really happy to see because you know if you’re scheming and game planning for another team

Vince:

00:30:42.41 – 00:31:02.64

and you know you don’t think the other guy’s gonna do much offensively that means they can help out on defense and you know that’s going to you know kind of clogged the paint for guys like uh you know Jalen Pickett and you know Seth lundy so that’s gonna make their jobs harder to score So the fact that he has shown this growth is really big for Penn

Maggie:

00:31:02.64 – 00:31:04.86

 state alright

Vince:

00:31:04.87 – 00:31:07.67

moving on to my player award

Vince:

00:31:07.89 – 00:31:32.45

I’m gonna give the fidelity fighter to Seth lundy and I just loved the uh you know the intensity in which he attacked this game He was not afraid to shoot from three early Uh he not actually knocked down three of his first six attempts from three So you know he was on fire and really kept Penn State in this game tonight early He had a tough you know step back three later in the game and

Vince:

00:31:32.59 – 00:31:42.43

this is something I’m really liking that I’ve seen it’s starting to become a trend where he’s starting to be more aggressive and looking to score more and you know sometimes uh you know

Vince:

00:31:43.11 – 00:32:12.45

basketball players can be too nice they can be too good of a teammate and you know when you’re one of the best players you need to take the shots and score not not always be looking to pass to see him doing that is really nice You know he did miss funk one time They had a two verses one layup So I’m sure he’s going to be a little frustrated when he hits the film He did get fouled But you know I really like the growth I’d rather him take all those extra shots and miss one pass you know being more aggressive So

Vince:

00:32:12.64 – 00:32:18.55

he definitely earned my player of the game award the Fidelity Fighter and the bird brawler I have to give to Jalen

Maggie:

00:32:18.55 – 00:32:19.03

 Pickett

Vince:

00:32:19.04 – 00:32:42.58

He you know he was great all game tonight Uh definitely uh was pressured at times But overall as a whole he got his lead the team 26 points He was you know crossing up Hunter Dickinson I actually thought Hunter Dixon Dickinson guarded him pretty well for a big guy like he was moving his feet pretty well However Jalen Pickett was just better and

Vince:

00:32:42.83 – 00:33:02.09

uh made a lot of those shots So I have to give him that a word He also had nine rebounds and six assists I believe So really great game for Pickett and um you know so even though the game did not go our way still a lot of great individual and team player performances

Maggie:

00:33:02.7 – 00:33:05.0

Yeah he was really solid on defense to

Vince:

00:33:05.01 – 00:33:19.89

Yeah yeah yeah it’s great He plays 40 minutes and he’s great on both ends of the floor You definitely gotta admire that toughness and not wanting to come off the floor and really doing whatever it takes to put the team in a successful position to win

Vince:

00:33:20.88 – 00:33:22.07

 So

Maggie:

00:33:22.08 – 00:33:22.9

 my

Vince:

00:33:22.9 – 00:33:47.83

score prediction I think you are going to see some cholesterol magic and we are going to see Penn State upset the number one Purdue boilermakers the magic of the cholesterol will carry them to victory I’m going to say Nittany Lions 73 boilermakers 69 so I got a four point victory in Philly

Vince:

00:33:47.98 – 00:33:55.61

and Penn State is ecstatic going into B J C For their next matchup against the Hoosiers

Maggie:

00:33:55.62 – 00:33:59.23

Alright It’s always magic in the Yeah

Vince:

00:33:59.24 – 00:34:15.08

Yeah Initially I was not going to pick us to beat Purdue however since Penn State did play them really well last year and you know we have that plaster magic I just I have to go with it It’s a special place It’s it’s almost like um

Vince:

00:34:15.57 – 00:34:44.27

it makes me think of like that Syracuse to Yukon sixth overtime game in Madison Square Garden Like you know Syracuse going there I feel like that’s almost the p a equivalent Penn State going to the Polestar a so um definitely have a lot of magic there and I think you’ll see Penn State a lot of big upset over it would be a close one but uh and I’m sure we’ll be going into early stages of uh you know anxiety but uh

Vince:

00:34:44.49 – 00:34:48.49

yeah I’m sure we’ll be anxious but I do think Penn State will pull out the win

Maggie:

00:34:48.49 – 00:34:50.46

 here

Vince:

00:34:50.72 – 00:35:09.58
