Vince:

00:00:16.4 – 00:00:40.69

I’m feeling great We are the Rose Bowl champions for the first time in my lifetime that I can remember This is this is the first time I’ve got to see this This is like the philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl This feels absolutely incredible Nittany Lion fans We did it We just won the granddaddy of them all

Andrew:

00:00:41.33 – 00:00:57.89

Yes that is correct For only the second time in program history Penn State has won the Rose Bowl and just put this into a little bit of perspective vince There are only two quarterbacks in Penn State history who have won the Rose Bowl One is named Carrie

Vince:

00:00:57.89 – 00:00:59.37

 Collins Heisman

Andrew:

00:00:59.37 – 00:01:02.12

 finalist all time Great

Andrew:

00:01:02.13 – 00:01:19.77

in Penn State history and the other one is named Sean Clifford We talked a lot about how Sean can end his Penn State career on a high note Go out as a champion Kind of erase some of the negatives across his campaign and just leave Penn State with a lasting memory of just

Vince:

00:01:19.78 – 00:01:20.45

 absolute

Andrew:

00:01:20.45 – 00:01:22.93

perfection Do you think that he accomplished this

Vince:

00:01:23.7 – 00:01:50.73

heck yeah If you look at his numbers today he was the reason we won this football game and I I talked about it earlier That was my key for the game I thought Penn State would have a difficult time with this Utah Rush defense and I said Sean has to be lights out and he was today And for me he has etched himself as the greatest on that mount Rushmore of greatest quarterback of all time at Penn State

Andrew:

00:01:51.12 – 00:01:55.97

Yeah he’s certainly in the conversation I mean there’s only a handful of quarterbacks who have done

Andrew:

00:01:56.18 – 00:02:23.115

what Sean Clifford has done or at least you know to a similar degree You’ve got obviously Todd Blackledge winning the college national championship You’ve got Kerry Collins winning the Rose Bowl before sean back in that 94 95 season What Sean Clifford has done is just rare You know there’s there’s no other way to put it and you’re absolutely right He played a phenomenal game didn’t turn the ball over hit the wide open guys hit some really nice passes I mean that one too mitch

Andrew:

00:02:23.125 – 00:02:50.07

Tinsley in the end zone in particular was just an absolute dart and he just looked locked in all game long So you know he was just just an absolute superstar when Penn State needed him the most And uh you know even though this Utah rush defense was still stingy we saw again some fireworks from star freshman running back Nick Singleton vince how loudly did you scream at your tv when nick Singleton rattled off that 80 plus yard touchdown run

Vince:

00:02:50.37 – 00:03:04.14

Oh once once I saw him get past the player who theo johnson blocked I just was flexing my arms cause I knew he was gonna take it to the house No one had the track speed to catch up with him The only guy who had a chance was actually keandre lambert

Andrew:

00:03:04.15 – 00:03:04.89

 luckily he

Vince:

00:03:04.89 – 00:03:05.885

 was on the same team

Vince:

00:03:05.895 – 00:03:21.42

So that was just an incredible feeling and I know we’ve compared Nick Singleton a lot to guys like miles Sanders and sae kwon Barkley However that reminded me a lot of a guy we saw star in the Rose Bowl kijana carter

Andrew:

00:03:21.67 – 00:03:34.33

Yeah yeah it certainly did He got a little bit of contact there near the line of scrimmage and then once he found some open air he was just gone So you know we talked a lot about that five star moment in the last part of the pod before that that

Vince:

00:03:34.33 – 00:03:37.4

Was Nick Singleton is a five star man

Andrew:

00:03:37.41 – 00:03:47.765

That’s right yeah so that that was that was a five star run right there He like nobody was catching him that was you know it seems to me like you know Penn State is kind of building up

Andrew:

00:03:47.775 – 00:04:13.88

a run of Penn State running backs just rattling off these amazing runs and rose bowls Going back to the 95 Rose Bowl with kijana carter to the 2017 Rose Bowl with se Kwon Barkley And now in 2023 nick Singleton has entered himself into that conversation with that simply sensational run that really put Penn State up a notch and not only just the scoreboard but I think just in pure momentum as well like Penn State was just feeling themselves after that run

Vince:

00:04:14.66 – 00:04:15.44

 Yeah And

Vince:

00:04:16.05 – 00:04:30.66

you just you just knew once cam arising had that injury this was game over and I thought Penn State was very um locked in You you heard the announcements of guys announcing they’re going to go to the NFL drought or the NFL draft

Vince:

00:04:30.82 – 00:05:00.1

and you know they knew that that that this was their last time to play together You could just sense that they wanted to go in the high note out on a high note just because of the camaraderie they have with one another and they did that tonight They the first half things didn’t go their way but second half credit them they made adjustments The pass rush was getting their uh the offense is clicking with Sean Clifford in the passing game a couple explosive plays to get you know them ahead and you know this this game was history

Vince:

00:05:00.42 – 00:05:03.72

alternating lines and that’s why they’re the Rose Bowl champions

Andrew:

00:05:03.73 – 00:05:28.14

That’s right yeah You gotta love just the way that the game ended up for guys like DeAndre Lambert smith who’s had you know some of his moments of drops and stuff like that He’s had some criticism from fans um that double move that he put on that Utah defender was just absolutely brilliant Sean Clifford was able to connect with him and then he kind of along with Nick Singleton had the track speed to just put it away So you know what’s what’s interesting about that is that Penn State

Vince:

00:05:28.6 – 00:05:28.91

 is

Andrew:

00:05:28.91 – 00:05:43.75

The only team in Rose Bowl history to have both a pass and a rushing play of over 80 yards go for a touchdown in Rose Bowl history So you know for an offense that’s been kind of up and down this season they certainly put it all together when it mattered most

Vince:

00:05:44.43 – 00:06:07.4

Yeah And I know we talked a lot about the physicality of Utah in our pregame However when I was you know kind of accounting for uh how I thought the game would turn out I did not factor in our speed and Utah you could tell when when they were not disciplined enough Penn State if they had a small gap they had the speed to get away And that was the difference maker today Speed

Andrew:

00:06:07.79 – 00:06:25.085

Yeah absolutely I mean there’s been kind of a consistent theme with physicality being in these bowl games in these late bowl games and kind of the question being raised of can this team match X other teams physicality And you know one team was TCU versus michigan I think a lot of people probably picked

Andrew:

00:06:25.095 – 00:06:42.485

michigan in that physicality matchup and a lot of people probably also picked Utah in the way that they handled USC and the way that they’ve been able to kind of assert their dominance in the second half of the season And I think Penn State really rose to the challenge there I mean they didn’t run all over that Utah defense but they certainly weren’t stifled by it

Vince:

00:06:42.495 – 00:06:50.81

Yeah they what they did was enough they didn’t give up any of the big chunk plays Uh you know I don’t think they had a run

Vince:

00:06:50.99 – 00:07:19.4

Let me look at the stat sheet here the long run that they did have the 1 30 yard run outside of that All the runs were 16 or less so they weren’t giving up a lot of the super long runs Uh so you know that was key and it was definitely frustrating at times watching camera risen just seemed to have the magic if we tackled him he had already given the ball to the running back Uh if we went after the running back you just saw him scamper down the field for a 10 or 15 yard gain Um

Vince:

00:07:19.79 – 00:07:42.4

you know but however they did a pretty good job with him in the passing game He was eight for 21 for 95 yards and an interception So you know credit to Penn State and you know the secondary all season long we we kind of praised him as the strength of the team and they’ve balled out tonight They had two interceptions Uh Penn State took care of the ball and you know that was the biggest difference in the game tonight

Andrew:

00:07:42.41 – 00:07:49.45

Yeah it was and uh you know I think early on Penn State really set the tone in the air with that Kalen King interception

Andrew:

00:07:49.61 – 00:08:00.27

and I think that you know this is gonna be an excellent secondary going into next year even without Joey porter JR returning I think that Kalen King kind of has this um

Andrew:

00:08:00.69 – 00:08:22.04

has this uh you know just innate ability to kind of sense the ball be very physical with the receiver and to you know just go up and get the ball when the time comes for it So uh vince tell me if I’m crazy but does it not look like Caitlin King is another first round draft pick for Penn State going into the next year into next year’s draft

Vince:

00:08:22.61 – 00:08:43.37

Yeah I mean I think he does he’s got the swag he’s got the name he’s got the production with all the passes defense this year Um he stepped up when Joey porter went went out with injury and you know you just you just talked about you know how is Penn State gonna look next year without Joey porter You know we got a sneak preview of that tonight Like they look great tonight and

Vince:

00:08:43.58 – 00:08:58.91

they held camera rising to 95 pass yards like you know he got injured uh early in the third quarter and Barnes had 100 and 12 but you know to keep them right around 200 pass yards for the entirety of the game and to have those to intercept

Vince:

00:08:58.92 – 00:09:14.26

to me that that was the biggest biggest key in the game especially that first one because early on it seemed that Utah had all the momentum they were methodically moving the ball down the field and then cam arising made that one mistake

Vince:

00:09:14.49 – 00:09:30.9

uh Caitlin King made the interception And then uh you know Penn State really turned it around They played good complementary football they marched down the field and then we saw our favorite formation the wing T And they used that Wing T formation to get next singleton into the end

Andrew:

00:09:30.9 – 00:09:32.51

 zone that

Vince:

00:09:32.52 – 00:09:33.44

 set the tone

Andrew:

00:09:33.45 – 00:09:39.976

For not only one touchdown but two I loved Chris Fowler’s reaction to that on the live broadcast

Andrew:

00:09:39.986 – 00:10:05.472

He said it’s the Wing T what era is this And Penn State uh turned that into into 12 points And uh you know they really kind of pointed out how you know you have both of those sensational freshman running backs in there and Nick Singleton and K Tron Allen and you know you never know which one of them is gonna get the ball But you know both of those guys are selfless enough to go out there and block for the other These are two guys that simply just play for each other Um

Andrew:

00:10:05.482 – 00:10:30.98

They both had a really great night tonight I think Nick Singleton is probably gonna get more of the headlines because of that 80 plus yard touchdown run But K Tron Allen in his own right still played a really good game Um turned a couple of runs that kind of looked like they were going to lose yards into at least and even play or to get one or two So you know I mean it’s I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that you know we’re just so ecstatic to have both of them back for next year and the year and the year beyond

Vince:

00:10:31.46 – 00:10:56.85

Yeah he he just refused to go backwards So even though you know things did not look good everything looks like a three or four yard loss and you know he managed to either make a small gain or get to the line of scrimmage So that was huge and you know Fowler may have been a little surprised but we we watched more pencil football we know that this is a formation that uh they like and when I saw that formation I was excited like I knew something good was gonna happen and

Vince:

00:10:57.13 – 00:11:22.25

you know let’s let’s be honest you want your star players on the field and hatred and nick both out there you know that’s a good situation and you know obviously they’re better I was running backs but they can block there’s no reason they can’t do that They’re strong they’re physical they’re fast and then you have a guy like Brenton strange back there and essentially what that does for you is whichever way you’re going you’re getting two blockers head on and

Vince:

00:11:22.52 – 00:11:49.38

you know it’s not like a quarterback sneak where everyone can kind of converge to one area and try to block one lane they have to be spread out And when you’re spread out and you got two blockers coming at you one way that’s a really tough play to stop and you know Penn State has even shown the ability to do a pass to the tight ends out of that formation So that’s a really difficult play to prepare for it It almost makes makes me more surprised that other teams don’t do this And this seems to be a

Vince:

00:11:49.59 – 00:11:59.83

Penn State only thing But I think we need to claim that trademark We gotta make some ninny blues wing teach wing T formation t shirts for our fans

Andrew:

00:11:59.84 – 00:12:11.19

Yeah absolutely yeah I mean I think that this was just the perfect exclamation point for a resurgent run game for Penn State this year I mean we’ve talked all about you know just kind of the

Andrew:

00:12:11.34 – 00:12:36.685

the kind of emergence of this freshman running back duo and the impact that they’ve been able to have a game in and game out But I think this was just the perfect way for Penn State to end the season Just kind of showing the nation that you know we have a couple of guys who are both extremely talented can impact the game in so many different ways and that you know we’re not afraid to kind of roll back the years when it comes to our playbook if it’s going to get us into the end zone you know we’re not we’re not afraid to

Andrew:

00:12:36.695 – 00:13:02.05

kind of use our tight ends in very very different ways which you know it’s kind of funny to think about you know when when we think about Penn State’s passing attack we always tend to focus more on the tight ends just given how prolific of a year that they’ve had But it was really the wide receivers that showed out in this game I mean I think that Mitchell Tinsley just was such a sure handed guy I mean I just you know I think that he had a tremendous game

Vince:

00:13:02.4 – 00:13:24.62

Yeah Mitchell Tinsley was money today keandre Lambert really great job in that slugger that nice slant to bait the defender and cutting the other way just to get open and you know using that speed to not let the other guys catch him It was it was a dime by Sean Clifford That was awesome And another guy who really showed out today he did have the one drop But Harrison Wallace had a really nice day today

Andrew:

00:13:25.39 – 00:13:41.14

Yeah absolutely I mean that that one drop was killer in the moment I was kind of yelling at my tv at that point in time but you know he kind of showed that he’s ready to step up for Penn State next to season as kind of that that long passing threat Um you know I think

Vince:

00:13:41.69 – 00:13:42.38

 yeah

Andrew:

00:13:42.39 – 00:13:54.55

absolutely I think he and drew our are gonna be a pretty nice combination So I you know I feel very confident about him you know mari Evans and the tight ends that we have coming back I think that Penn State’s passing attack is in good hands

Vince:

00:13:55.17 – 00:14:12.735

Yeah I agree And uh kind of the nice thing about the way this played out that I thought was really cool that coach franklin was able to call that time out towards the end of the game and Sean got to have his standing innovation which I’m really happy he got because I feel like he was unfairly booed by um some class

Vince:

00:14:12.745 – 00:14:28.65

pounds in the fan base Uh the the 1% so to see him walk off you know for everything he’s done for Penn State to see him walk off That was really cool and not only that uh you kind of got to see him pass the torch along to Drew Aller

Andrew:

00:14:28.78 – 00:14:56.8

Yeah yeah there was definitely some symbolism going on with that I mean I’m I’m certainly glad that Sean was able to kind of play out those couple of plays um in that series and go out with a standing ovation That’s just the type of thing that a quarterback like him deserves you know he’s a guy who has worked through a lot of adversity in his Penn State career and you know I think we could both agree that he’s a guy who deserves to go out um with as much fanfare as he is just given how much he’s given himself to Penn State

Andrew:

00:14:56.96 – 00:15:14.54

and you’re right You know I think that um this was in more ways than one just Penn State getting ready to enter the Drew our era Um I thought it was kind of funny how they let him throw the ball in the end zone on fourth down there Just kind of like hey Drew you know you’re really talented and throwing the ball so here too

Andrew:

00:15:14.55 – 00:15:32.28

take a shot You know I thought that was kind of funny but you know I thought that this was um you know for for all the seniors that exist on this team between J R Brown PJ muster for sean Clifford and some others you know I thought this was you know how could you ask for a better way to go out

Vince:

00:15:32.29 – 00:15:40.64

Um let’s be honest you know that’s a good opportunity for Drew Aller but we don’t know if he’s ever going to get a chance to play in the Rose Bowl again Um

Vince:

00:15:40.85 – 00:16:08.3

You know you know the college playoff is expanding in 2024 So really next year is last year that Penn State will have this opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl and you know obviously we we hope it’s college football playoff and um I don’t know that the future schedule but if the Rose Bowl is one of the college football playoff games and we don’t make that top four it doesn’t matter if we finish second to michigan or Ohio State

Vince:

00:16:08.55 – 00:16:24.87

we’re not gonna be in the Roosevelt will be at some other one and you know we both know that the Roosevelt just means more So you know I’m happy that he got that opportunity a little bit of a bummer that they couldn’t connect and I was hoping that towards the end of the game there Sean Clifford was able to connect with his brother liam

Vince:

00:16:25.08 – 00:16:48.23

Uh you know unfortunately just you know no one was open on that play uh unfortunately but you know really cool to see uh you know the guys at the end get to play That was awesome to see you Tank smith get four carries and he you know he’s a guy who’s stuck with the program for five years and never complained about not getting play time and always made the most of his snaps So do you

Vince:

00:16:48.24 – 00:16:55.82

you know him being able to take those snaps and carries with the Rose Bowl at the Rose Bowl That’s something that he’ll be able to remember the rest of his life

Andrew:

00:16:55.83 – 00:17:11.4

Yeah absolutely I think that you know the meaningful snaps that guys on the second or 13 were able to get near the end of the game that stuff that they’re gonna be able to carry with them into the season and the season After I mean just the fact that Penn State was so dominant in the second half I think

Andrew:

00:17:11.41 – 00:17:31.74

means a lot to guys like Tank smith and to deny Dennis Sutton and a couple of other guys who you know maybe not have gotten so many snaps um late in the game if it were a tie game or like maybe a one score game So I think that you know in many many ways this was just a sincere positive for Penn State

Vince:

00:17:31.75 – 00:17:36.4

Yeah it really was we just beat a pac 12 champion

Vince:

00:17:36.87 – 00:17:56.19

you know being a team that’s always been kind of in Ohio State or michigan shadow you know outside of the 2016 year you know this this has to make it feel good to knock off a you know other conference champion and Penn State will probably end up finishing number seven and you know the final ap

Vince:

00:17:56.19 – 00:18:05.88

pool standing So you know really big year for Penn State and we’re just so lucky that the the year turned out the way it did and it was it was really funny here to cover the team

Andrew:

00:18:05.89 – 00:18:15.52

Absolutely I mean it’s crazy to think that Penn State started the year unranked and ended up a top 10 team winning the Rose Bowl Like just think about that for a second

Andrew:

00:18:15.69 – 00:18:35.82

You know we’re talking about a team that just wasn’t even in the conversation for being in this position um early on in september and just the way the dominoes fell Um we didn’t really know how good Penn State was going into this postseason like Penn State won the games that it was supposed to beat up on some

Andrew:

00:18:35.96 – 00:18:52.42

um you know some I don’t want to call them inferior but you know maybe some less talented teams in the big 10 they lost two against two teams that went into the college football playoff So people were kind of wondering like how good was this team really and I think this this game really showed you just how good Penn State

Andrew:

00:18:52.43 – 00:19:18.07

it was like you know granted cam arising to get hurt but Penn State was able to overcome this really tough Utah defense that not even Caleb Williams was able to overcome granted he was injured also and just really put together just a complete performance against a team that many people including the people in the stands you know given the ratio of Utah fans of Penn State fans thought they couldn’t overcome So I think this is just

Andrew:

00:19:18.2 – 00:19:30.02

you know just in so many ways just just a vindication for Penn State this season just getting that signature win that people love to throw out there so much like this felt like a signature win with a capital s

Vince:

00:19:30.26 – 00:19:50.82

I I don’t think it’s gonna happen next year but I like when this team is you know underrated um I just feel like they’re hungrier uh you know they’re out to prove everybody wrong historically you know Penn State does better when everyone counts them out as opposed to when they’re the favorite So while I don’t think that’s gonna happen next year

Vince:

00:19:50.83 – 00:20:05.28

when you have like the stars of Nick Singleton and K Tron Allen and you know Al are coming back Um you know definitely a really exciting season almost makes you think of you know that 2016 Big 10 championship instead of a Big 10 title We got a Rose Bowl title

Andrew:

00:20:05.29 – 00:20:11.4

Yeah Absolutely I mean this is the kind of finish that has those pundits and those writers and

Andrew:

00:20:11.59 – 00:20:35.62

the the voters kind of saying at the beginning of the season like this is a top 10 team So you know very similarly to after that 2017 Rose Bowl when the voters put Penn State and I think it was number seven or number six at the preseason spot before the season started Like you could very easily make the argument that Penn State should be a top 10 team going into next season given what they have coming back

Vince:

00:20:35.76 – 00:21:04.12

Yeah absolutely And if you look at the big 10 as a conference as a whole we did really well in these bowl games Uh You had Minnesota getting a nice win you had Wisconsin getting a nice win Iowa gotta win Maryland gotta win uh Illinois was uh relatively competitive with Mississippi state Purdue they were under matched against L S U But that was really the only like really big time loss Uh And michigan

Vince:

00:21:04.35 – 00:21:33.33

I do think if they play that game 10 times uh michigan beats TCU probably eight or nine out of 10 times But you know when you just happen to have two pick sixes and you know there’s that fumble at the one yard line like if they play that game 10 times uh that’s not gonna happen for michigan and you’re going you’re going to have a different outcome most likely And Ohio State they had a chance to knock off the dogs and you know

Vince:

00:21:33.59 – 00:21:42.59

they were set up for a you know a good field goal opportunity to win it at the end They you know they blew a two touchdown lead Uh you know so

Vince:

00:21:43.13 – 00:21:58.97

you know and the grand scheme of things uh you know man is Penn State close to the college football playoff and man are they close to uh if they can keep this momentum up and the young guys can contribute you know this is a team that might contribute in the college football playoff next year

Andrew:

00:21:58.98 – 00:22:08.92

Absolutely I mean it’s I think it’s underrated just how much a bowl victory like this can carry over into next season Like you’re talking about guys like nick Singleton case

Andrew:

00:22:08.93 – 00:22:24.47

Ron Allen Trey Wallace Um Tyler Warren just all of these guys getting meaningful plays in a rose ball game which is you know outside of the college football playoff probably the highest pressure game in college football bowl series like

Andrew:

00:22:24.65 – 00:22:47.3

that I don’t think can be understated And so I think that you know the fact that these guys won this game like they know that they can win a big game They can match the physicality of a team that’s tough That’s shown themselves to be tough in big games like Utah date against USC and that pac 12 championship game Like that stuff matters So I think that you know all these guys especially even on the like the offensive line like they know that they can block

Andrew:

00:22:47.31 – 00:23:09.96

a really really good defensive line like that stuff can’t be overstated I’m just over the moon about you know obviously this result here I’m probably gonna drop an exuberant amount of money on Rose Bowl championship apparel Um but you know but like let’s talk about like what this means for Penn State moving forward Like what kind of impact do you think that this game is going to have

Andrew:

00:23:09.97 – 00:23:19.78

for Penn State not only just in terms of next year but in terms of recruits coming in Like what kind of lasting impact kind of Rose bowl victory have for Penn State

Vince:

00:23:19.79 – 00:23:32.63

Uh this game means so much to the program First of all I think this is going to be a game 20 years from now You see reruns on the tv on the Big 10 network kind of like you do for uh you know that Big 10 champion

Vince:

00:23:32.64 – 00:23:56.78

the game It’s one of those games uh it looks really good for recruits and not only recruits it looks good for those uh you know veteran guys in the transfer portal that contribute to Penn State and areas that you know they could really use some depth or you know some veteran leaders We’re losing guys like Mitchell Tinsley and J R Brown We got to find ways to you know reload and and contribute And

Vince:

00:23:57.02 – 00:24:18.32

I think this really has a lot of potential for the guys in that locker room You know they should obviously enjoy the victory and really be happy tonight But that feeling of winning is so addictive Like I I know when I won my first district championship

Vince:

00:24:18.49 – 00:24:45.06

that just made me hungrier like I wanted that feeling more and I was I was willing to do whatever it took to have like I wanted that you know at the state level and I was just that much more motivated to get better And when they look at you know this entire football season in the grand scheme of things they were going to see how michigan Ohio state how well they played in those two college football playoff games and

Vince:

00:24:45.25 – 00:25:03.47

to know they won theirs and michigan and Ohio state didn’t and you know they competed with the dogs the buckeyes and that was the team that we competed with and heading into the fourth quarter and kind of let it slip away that just you know let them know that hey they’re they’re close to the top of that mountain and you know

Vince:

00:25:03.67 – 00:25:20.69

when you’re you’re at the top of the mountain it is hard because everyone’s trying to knock you off But you know if they do the proper preparation and they’re able to recruit the proper talent you know it’s just that if you’re lying that has to fuel your fire heading into this next year like I am like I would be

Vince:

00:25:20.92 – 00:25:39.09

you know enjoying tonight and then after you know we’re done partying and enjoying the time in Los Angeles that they have one Once I get back to state college I am you know I’m a hungry dog I want a big 10 championship college football football player I want to play in a national championship I want to be a

Vince:

00:25:39.24 – 00:25:53.34

Uh you know Penn State’s first national champion since 1986 Like that is something that you know I I really I’m fired up just thinking about it If you know if I was a guy in their position and I hope the players feel the same way

Andrew:

00:25:53.35 – 00:25:55.97

Yeah absolutely And I think that

Andrew:

00:25:56.12 – 00:26:11.61

you know this honestly could be the tipping point for getting guys like Dante Cephas out of Kent State to state College like this Uh you know there’s been a lot of talk about certain programs being in contention for some of these highly recruited guys in the trance report

Andrew:

00:26:11.62 – 00:26:27.22

with Dante Sisyphus kind of being right at the top of Penn State’s list for potential incoming transfers um given the kind of impact that he can have in the in the passing game Like this type of bowl victory might be the thing that tips him in Penn State’s favor

Vince:

00:26:27.23 – 00:26:37.75

Yeah And you know you saw guys like juice Scruggs calling right now He’s already called that not to mention we didn’t even have a tonight right earlier in the game

Vince:

00:26:38.2 – 00:26:53.37

You know I didn’t even really notice it and I saw the camera showing him on the side and I was like like you know Cliff is gonna get pressure tonight and you know he was pressured early in the game However uh you know later in the second half they were able to clean some things up they really got that passing and going but we didn’t even have

Andrew:

00:26:54.16 – 00:26:55.56

 like you know

Andrew:

00:26:55.57 – 00:26:55.98

 ju

Vince:

00:26:55.98 – 00:26:58.44

Said he’s going to be a top 10 pick next year

Andrew:

00:26:58.45 – 00:26:59.48

 So we

Vince:

00:26:59.48 – 00:27:18.88

got a guy like that coming back who who didn’t even play and it’s just it has to make you so excited You know if these Nittany Lions have their heads on straight and you know put in the work in the offseason and work in the film room and you know take care of things like sleep nutrition staying injury free and staying healthy

Vince:

00:27:19.06 – 00:27:36.2

Um if they have their heads on straight and just come in with that you know piste off mentality you know just being so close to playing in the college football playoff if that’s an attitude that they bring with them next year Uh this can be a really scary Penn State football team

Andrew:

00:27:36.21 – 00:27:44.12

Absolutely And they have the added benefit of you know kind of feeling that way Like maybe they came up short moments but also that the Rose bowl champ

Andrew:

00:27:44.13 – 00:28:09.2

So it’s you know kind of like like you know we know that we could have done more but look at how much we’ve achieved and you know speaking of achievements you know one topic of conversation that’s been hotly contested over the years is James franklin Like obviously you know James has had his moments where like his team has come up short in some big moments in some big games Um you know they’re like there was a lot of discussion after he got his contract extension from

Andrew:

00:28:09.21 – 00:28:34.28

ST uh some wondering like is this worth it Like did they really like was it really in Penn State’s best interest to pay James franklin this much money over this long period of time personally I think that James franklin got a lot of that monkey off his back you know kind of in in terms of his record against ranked teams in big games But vince do you agree with me like was this kind of a vindication of James franklin

Vince:

00:28:34.62 – 00:29:00.84

Yeah I do think it was however um we we do need to tread carefully in these waters because what happened the year after we won the Big 10 championship uh had a little bit of drop off Um then you know a couple years later we’re you know getting these situations where they you know they barely make a bowl game So um you know Penn State this is either they’re going to be content and

Vince:

00:29:01.02 – 00:29:26.66

you know you might have a drop off or you know this might really ignite a fire under them and you know really propel them to the step that we think they can take with the talent that they have you know really get to that next level because I feel like sometimes um you know over the years we’ve had all the talent but you know the results aren’t there Last year there were a 77 and six football team

Vince:

00:29:26.88 – 00:29:42.8

and a lot of those losses were close but seven and six is seven and six You are what your record is So you know is this gonna be you know a team that doesn’t do all the little things right Or is that or is being so close to the college football playoff or

Vince:

00:29:42.81 – 00:29:52.5

or a big time championship or national championship Are they willing to do all those little things and all the sacrifices that it takes to be successful at that level

Andrew:

00:29:52.64 – 00:29:53.48

 time

Vince:

00:29:53.48 – 00:30:01.86

will tell But if I’m a player in that locker room I know my time is limited and uh you know the blue and white uniforms and

Vince:

00:30:02.08 – 00:30:26.23

you know got you saw you saw you saw Sean when he got pulled off you know he had you know tears you know on the sidelines you know those are obviously happy tears but you know some of them were you know a little bit bittersweet because that that’s the last time he gets to lace up in you know Penn State jersey and that’s the last time time he gets the ball with his boys So you know this is you know they really need to take advantage of you know the time they have there and a lot of these guys

Vince:

00:30:26.52 – 00:30:52.92

it’s only three years Um you know the guys that are there right now some of them might only have two years left like nick Singleton or you know Katrina and General er um they might be gone for the draft in two years and then you’re really trying to pick out you know that talent that talent can be really hard to find and they have it now and you know it’s their job as a team and as a program and you know all of us you know the nation as a community to get behind the team and

Vince:

00:30:53.15 – 00:30:57.07

really you know everyone’s got to be locked in and execute these next two years

Andrew:

00:30:57.08 – 00:31:17.31

Absolutely and you know if I had to kind of put a guest to it I think that Penn State will capitalize on this momentum because I think what’s been really weighing on James franklin’s mind in the past couple of years He even mentioned like you know Penn State didn’t capitalize as much as they should have on the recruiting front after the 2016

Andrew:

00:31:17.32 – 00:31:37.46

run to the Big 10 championship and that 2017 appearance in the Rose Bowl He kind of said like we didn’t leverage that as much as we should So you know I don’t think that history is gonna repeat itself I think that James and crew kind of realize the magnitude of what they’ve achieved tonight So I think that in a lot of aspects they’re really going to put this to work in Penn State’s favor

Vince:

00:31:37.75 – 00:31:49.56

Yeah And uh based off of everything that has happened this weekend this makes me feel so excited because um we we always hear about oh the sec is so great the sec is so great Um

Vince:

00:31:49.84 – 00:32:10.46

you had a missed field goal and you know an odd you know to pick six fumble at the one yard line and there was some kind of debate that you know that michigan player like bobbled it and then caught in the end zone So you know that’s three possessions right there That’s a 21 point swing So we

Andrew:

00:32:10.46 – 00:32:11.43

 were so close to

Vince:

00:32:11.43 – 00:32:16.16

Having a Big 10 National Championship game and the fact that

Vince:

00:32:16.55 – 00:32:30.51

You know the Nittany lions were right there you know especially with that Ohio state game at home you know that just has to get you really pumped up as a fan to you know see what they can do carrying over into the 2023 season

Andrew:

00:32:30.52 – 00:32:42.24

Yeah 100% I mean it almost kind of feels like they’re just like half a step behind Ohio State and michigan right now and then there’s kind of a drop off after the Nittany Lions But yeah I mean I think you’re absolutely right that there’s

Andrew:

00:32:42.44 – 00:33:05.7

tons of reasons to be optimistic going into next year and the year after that especially as college football playoff expansion happened So you know it’s the only time will tell but you know I think that for tonight and uh you know for like a little bit after this victory I think that dan franklin and crew can enjoy this one Kind of just really celebrate the seniors and the players that have put in so much over some tough years for Pen

Andrew:

00:33:05.71 – 00:33:28.99

State and really just kind of cement their legacy at Penn State But you know speaking of legacy and you know players who have put it all on the line I think it’s time that we announce our players of the game our final bird brawler and Fidelity Fighter of this 2022 2023 season So vince why don’t you hit me with your final Fidelity Fighter of this football season

Vince:

00:33:29.42 – 00:33:55.16

you know I got two guys so so you know there was a lot of guys who had great games today Uh I thought keith Mellis but you know to really impressive in the secondary You saw him all over the field making tackles Um you could obviously go with Nick Singleton with that big touchdown run you could look uh you know his other touchdown run earlier in the in the game out of that wing T you can look at keandre Lambert uh you can look at

Vince:

00:33:55.46 – 00:34:24.69

you know Kalen King with that big interception and J R Brown with his interception But the guy I have to go with since you’re giving me the first choice got to go to Sean Clifford He was my you know key player in the in the pregame and he played mistake free football tonight He made every play that was there when you needed him to make a play when nobody was open He got rid of the football You know there were times you know when he just took the sack when it was appropriate to when his team wasn’t helping it out But

Vince:

00:34:25.09 – 00:34:33.8

you know even though he’s being pressured early he just played on face tonight made all the players that were there to be made And he’s the reason why Penn State is Rose Bowl champions

Andrew:

00:34:33.81 – 00:34:50.95

Absolutely yeah If you weren’t gonna take him I would because I just completely agree with you I think that this was you know kind of Sean Clifford’s um Mona lisa if you will like this was just the perfect game at the perfect moment Um you know he just he didn’t turn the ball over like he

Andrew:

00:34:50.96 – 00:35:03.71

he’s been known to do at times in the past like he took advantage of the of the opportunities that you gave him in the passing game Um He was smart with the football I don’t think he did he take a sack in this game

Vince:

00:35:03.72 – 00:35:14.69

early and actually I think he took quite a few sacks official stat here but there were definitely a few times where he was sacked in the backfield so he did take three sacks today

Andrew:

00:35:14.7 – 00:35:16.81

I see Okay well you know I think the

Andrew:

00:35:16.82 – 00:35:42.69

it just kind of speaks volumes to the overall game that he had that I just don’t even remember him Um but yeah so I mean Sean Clifford like kudos to you man thank you for everything that you’ve done for Penn State football especially kind of delivering this Rose bowl victory tonight The nation you’re gonna be a legend forever for doing that And uh since you did take uh Sean Clifford for this one I have to give my bird brawler award to Nick Singleton

Andrew:

00:35:42.86 – 00:36:03.17

Um you know they were just like you said so many guys who showed out in this game today but that 80 plus yard touchdown run from nick Singleton just kind of continuing the legacy of guys like say kwon Barkley like kijana carter just um absolutely taking the game over for a split second and just showing everybody on the field I’m better than you I’m faster than you

Vince:

00:36:04.07 – 00:36:04.5

 That’s

Andrew:

00:36:04.5 – 00:36:05.9

 right yeah You know

Andrew:

00:36:05.91 – 00:36:28.94

that to me was just everything that Penn State needed in that moment because I think it was still a tie game um when he rattled that one off So you know just from the from the standpoint of not only putting points on the board for Penn State but also just kind of showing Utah like you know you may have a good Russian defense but I’m here like all of those factors combined just put it all together for me Um I just

Andrew:

00:36:28.95 – 00:36:51.99

I think that you know he’s just something that is going to have a tremendous impact at Penn State in the next couple of years he’s going to kind of leave a lasting legacy at Penn State as you know not only just a running back but just as a playmaker for Penn State And I think that this was you know kind of like the auburn game before this one this was a game where people really really are going to start paying attention to him So you know

Andrew:

00:36:52.0 – 00:37:15.13

we might start seeing some like Heisman hype for him in the next year or so I mean just you could say all kinds of hyperbole about Nick Singleton after that run Um but you know for me that just was like a moment of him putting it all together like we talked a little bit about him kind of running into contact and then going down but he took the contact bounced a little bit to his right and then just took it to the house like what more can you say

Vince:

00:37:15.14 – 00:37:21.5

Yeah And like kind of one guy I think I forgot to mention was a decent Isaac I thought he had a really good game He saw 20

Vince:

00:37:21.64 – 00:37:43.8

you know all around the football and you know there were times where he was very close to getting sacks But if you would have stole sean for me I definitely would have picked Kalen King as my finality fighter So he would have finished second for me that first interception in the first half that was so big because Utah at that point in the game they had all the momentum

Vince:

00:37:43.97 – 00:37:58.0

and if they continue to go down the field and score first you know that that momentum can snowball and stop that Penn State did a nice job of playing complementary football They moved the ball back down the field and they converted on a touchdown

Vince:

00:37:58.14 – 00:38:10.25

uh drive Like just like they needed to and you know that really set the tone early in the game and really prevented Penn State from you know kind of starting behind the eight ball

Andrew:

00:38:10.26 – 00:38:25.81

Oh 100% I mean we’ve seen so many times This Penn State defense kind of get behind early when the opposing team has a really good competent smart quarterback and I don’t think it’s really crazy to say that Kalen King looked like an NFL coach

Andrew:

00:38:25.82 – 00:38:53.48

on that play Like he just he played his guy perfectly like he was looking for the ball he went up and got it like great ball skills like he just looked like the complete package So I think that you know Penn State’s kind of building themselves a bit of a run as like cornerback you a little bit with Joey porter Jr projecting as a top pick in the NFL draft Obviously you guys like you got guys like Amani or a warrior in the NFL already but kind of looks like

Andrew:

00:38:53.49 – 00:39:21.17

he’s gonna have a run of really highly drafted cornerbacks um coming out here in the next couple of years So but I mean like absolutely I would agree with you just a monster performance by him Um really just came through when it mattered most and just really helped the Penn State just kind of stay afloat in the early goings when teams were kind of feeling each other out and uh just kind of let Penn State um kind of set its feet and go after uh after the end zone the way that it did

Vince:

00:39:21.55 – 00:39:43.8

Yeah And I think Penn State is going to start giving else you some competition for that you know DB University So you know watch out they’re coming another play I want to point out from the game I believe that Utah was in the third and long I think it was a 3rd and 10 and um they showed the replay uh kind of everything with the safeties were shifted to the middle and Kaylin was on his island and

Vince:

00:39:43.98 – 00:40:05.97

Camera risen made made the correct play He threw it about six yards down the field and Kalen King made a really great tackle and if he didn’t make that tackle you know there was no one within 30 yards that would have been you know definitely a first down and then you know converting the play and Utah was only down a touchdown at that point in the game So that was a

Vince:

00:40:05.98 – 00:40:27.97

really crucial point And then we also saw him in the first half Um he went to the locker room at some point Uh you know we’re unsure if it was an injury or like you know he needed to go to the bathroom or something But you know that play he was out that was when Utah score their second touchdown and you know included on that play was you know that run by Utah where we have like four missed tackles So

Vince:

00:40:27.98 – 00:40:37.11

yeah when he was not on the field that was one of Utah’s scoring drives So they desperately missed him when he was out for that five minutes

Andrew:

00:40:37.11 – 00:40:38.8

Yeah absolutely I mean I think

Vince:

00:40:38.81 – 00:40:42.64

his value of the football team is really important

Andrew:

00:40:42.65 – 00:40:49.98

Oh absolutely I mean it’s kind of a cliche in football that you know your true value on the field has shown when

Andrew:

00:40:50.13 – 00:41:10.53

the results on the field kind of go against your team’s favor Like you know it just it really really mattered when Caitlin king was not on the field I mean we saw Mark East Wilson um give up that unfortunate third and long pass play and stuff like that and you know I think that uh you know just with a couple more reps he’s probably playing that one correctly But

Vince:

00:41:10.54 – 00:41:14.75

it is one of the harder things to do as an athlete when you know everyone is

Vince:

00:41:14.75 – 00:41:21.76

warmed up and in the flow of the game it’s a lot easier to play as opposed to you just get thrown in there and you’re cold and you might not be warmed up You

Andrew:

00:41:21.76 – 00:41:22.89

 know you’re

Vince:

00:41:22.89 – 00:41:33.38

kind of scrambling like last minute So you know definitely one of the harder things to do like if he’s a starter obviously he’s more prepared and he’s in the flow of the game But yeah just getting thrown in there It’s a tough thing to do

Andrew:

00:41:33.39 – 00:41:39.38

Yeah 100% Especially against just a really seasoned Utah passing attack even without

Andrew:

00:41:39.51 – 00:41:58.18

Uh top pass catcher in Dalton Kincaid and uh with with cameras and going out but you know regardless Penn State did what they needed to do to get the victories 35-21 Vince I think I’ve said my piece here Is there anything else that you want to talk about or shout out from this game before

Andrew:

00:41:58.19 – 00:41:59.08

 we head out of here

Vince:

00:41:59.09 – 00:42:02.3

nope Rose Bowl Champions say that

Andrew:

00:42:02.31 – 00:42:16.87

Yeah vince I think that we can officially call ourselves a good luck charm because like we said before Penn State started this year undefeated we decided to launch this podcast and we end this year as top 10 Rose Bowl champion So how about that

Vince:

00:42:17.05 – 00:42:21.66

Yeah You know good things come It’s a good omen and I think we should keep this thing rolling

Andrew:

00:42:21.67 – 00:42:26.09

Absolutely And we hope that all of you listening listening out there agree with us as well

Vince:

00:42:26.1 – 00:42:29.0

Absolutely Any final thoughts before we get out here

Andrew:

00:42:29.01 – 00:42:42.9

No man Just happy new year to you 2023 couldn’t imagine a better start to the year with Penn State being Rose Bowl champions only one other time we’ve been able to say that in Penn State football’s history So it’s just that much sweeter to be able to say it again

Vince:

00:42:43.1 – 00:42:47.37

Yeah And the last time we could say that um I don’t think our words were quite as good

Andrew:

00:42:47.38 – 00:42:53.66

Probably not No Yeah we weren’t really seeing names like kijana carter very clearly

Vince:

00:42:54.5 – 00:43:15.76
