Maggie:

00:00:17.93 – 00:00:22.34

It was a lot of fun There are definitely more people in the BJC than I

Vince:

00:00:22.35 – 00:00:23.0

 thought

Vince:

00:00:23.33 – 00:00:23.5

 I

Maggie:

00:00:23.5 – 00:00:35.44

was a little worried It would be a slim crowd because so many students around break you know families are traveling people are resting up after some busy holidays But the B J C

Vince:

00:00:35.44 – 00:00:36.37

 was

Maggie:

00:00:36.38 – 00:00:42.76

alive and well There are a lot of people there So that was really fun Energy to start off the new Year on

Vince:

00:00:44.62 – 00:01:03.41

Yeah the energy in the stadium was absolutely electric tonight Even though there was not a student section we still got a huge turnout on New Year’s Day and this was a great game for the Nittany Lions and this was half where a lot of things went right early

Vince:

00:01:03.6 – 00:01:31.965

and a lot of things didn’t go well for the Hawkeyes in the first half Penn State was six of 10 from downtown Led by Andrew Funk He knocked a lot knocked down a lot of threes cam Winter had a great first half and Jalen Pickett was just operating in the paint with surgical precision That was so great to see whenever he got to the pain It seemed like he didn’t miss a shot So those are some really good things I saw um from Penn State in the first half and

Vince:

00:01:31.975 – 00:01:48.79

They had a huge lead heading into halftime It was 44-26 However I said this to to you at halftime Iowa is not going to shoot one for eight from downtown And boy did that change in the second half

Maggie:

00:01:49.38 – 00:02:15.22

Yeah and I think we do really have to give the Penn State defense credit in the first half because they kept it they locked down Iowa early on I don’t remember exactly what the score was going into the second half but the Penn State defense was really strong really responsive We saw a couple of fun just like really big blocks from

Maggie:

00:02:15.49 – 00:02:29.04

Evan Mahaffey Those were really electric Those were I mean it’s just so much fun to watch them block a shot and just stuff a guy So we um I think the defense really shown in the first half for Penn State

Vince:

00:02:29.61 – 00:02:49.38

Yeah Evan Mahaffey was definitely one of those guys who if he if he doesn’t play the way he did tonight Penn State does not win this basketball game He was absolutely electric at times Uh it was primarily him and miles Dredd due to keep getting in foul trouble early on and

Vince:

00:02:49.63 – 00:03:13.15

He had two huge blocks where he just came out of nowhere and just jumped like 7ft in the air out of nowhere Just make an incredible block and that the timing was really impressive So his ability to guard Chris Murray who was impressive in his own right for Iowa He finished the game with 32 points up you know leading the game and

Vince:

00:03:13.38 – 00:03:32.75

Evan was really impressive not only defensively like he always does but he really got to the rim tonight and he was attacking the rim There were time there was one play where he took it from half court He beat his defender and the lane was open So he just took it to the hole and we’re not used to seeing Evan take that many dribbles So

Vince:

00:03:32.93 – 00:03:57.23

Um you know to see him take advantage of the opportunity when it was there That was really awesome to see for the freshman as he continues to grow He finished with 19 minutes tonight which I believe is a season high He was two or three from the field six points three rebounds to assist two blocks and a steal on the defensive end So he was just a menace tonight defensively and driving to the post

Maggie:

00:03:57.24 – 00:03:59.5

Yeah that was I think it really

Maggie:

00:03:59.88 – 00:04:20.6

exciting game to see maybe just come alive in because I think we’ve seen little flashes of that earlier in this season We’ll see you know some you know always really consistent defense and then some you know some fun like big fun stops big fun athletic plays But then to really have that

Maggie:

00:04:21.17 – 00:04:29.41

to be able to string together that so consistently tonight I think really really proves that he’s taken that step to the next level

Vince:

00:04:29.42 – 00:04:34.12

Yeah And another guy who had a great game off the bench was Miles Dredd uh

Vince:

00:04:34.54 – 00:04:52.67

yeah he’s been in a little bit of a shooting some lately but he you know really cast it on his opportunities today He was three for four had seven points five rebounds So not only was he shooting well he also uh did really well on the defensive end for Penn State He had a steel um

Vince:

00:04:53.45 – 00:05:10.58

we not only shot threes today he made a couple of two point field goals in his first not only 112 point field goal on the season he had two of them So uh he kind of had a weird statistical anomaly where he didn’t score any two point field goals That’s because for the most part he

Vince:

00:05:10.59 – 00:05:38.96

he has asked to shoot threes and that’s what he does really well But he was another guy who just definitely displayed a lot of mental toughness in the game today Under three minutes to go he made his layup and you know then fell down and suffered some cramps He still ran down to the other end and you know play defense to the best of his ability We saw him on the sideline on the trainer’s table They quickly got him a Gatorade and you know they put some electrolyte powder in it and

Vince:

00:05:39.23 – 00:06:04.74

You know miles was shaking it And I don’t know if I had ever seen anyone like chug an entire great gatorade that fast Like he was so determined to get back into this basketball game and help his team win Like and that’s some true dedication uh for miles right there and he came back into the game uh 36 seconds later did suffer some cramping again So he went out rested it for a few minutes and then

Vince:

00:06:04.89 – 00:06:29.56

Hopped in the last 16 seconds when they wanted his veteran presence out there and luck luckily Penn State was able to close out this game in the end It did it did come down Uh you know it was 83-79 and actually I was almost knocked down three at the end as time was expiring So it would have made my pregame prediction 83-82 come true

Vince:

00:06:29.72 – 00:06:54.31

But so but anyway I’ll take a bigger win you know I’ll keep my blood pressure a little bit lower And I think that’s about as close as I’ve been in a game prediction all season So um yeah the game kind of played out how I thought it would I thought one team would be hotter earlier and I thought the other team would be hotter in the second half and make a run and come back And credit depends state Uh

Vince:

00:06:54.57 – 00:07:17.46

I will really chipped away at this lead early in the first half It was 64 to 55 at one point So they cut it to nine points rather quickly However Penn State did make a little bit of a run and they did keep it around a 12 to 15 point cushion for the majority of the game However chris Murray and

Vince:

00:07:18.18 – 00:07:43.3

um uh you know Perkins and Philip robot baca they really led the way for the hot guys especially Murray Uh they were kind of times tonight where um he almost looked a little kevin Durant ish he’s you know very tall has a long wingspan is a really good shooter and he knocked down some really tough shots tonight He was 12 20 from the field and

Vince:

00:07:43.44 – 00:07:52.98

you know Penn State was playing pretty good defense on him For the most part you mostly saw Mahaffey and Seth lundy guarding him Uh they did about as good as you can do and

Vince:

00:07:53.56 – 00:08:22.05

you know he played 40 minutes 32 2 points nine rebounds and three assists So he was definitely giving Penn State fits especially in the second half However Penn State was very lucky We have an ace of our own in jail in pickett He was big time tonight He was 10 for 16 from the field wasn’t missing You know those close shots of the basket he almost looked Kobe Bryant nish at times or he knocked down some tough fade aways as the shot clock was expiring So

Vince:

00:08:22.28 – 00:08:35.77

uh Jalen Pickett his his senior leadership and having a good night along with you know Andrew funk and you know Seth lundy really came alive in the second half He had zero points in the first half was over four but then uh

Vince:

00:08:36.72 – 00:08:43.52

Made you know made a few more of his opportunities and was really close with his free throws as he scored 10 points in the second half

Maggie:

00:08:43.53 – 00:09:02.82

Yeah I mean you say that that we have to give credit to Penn State but I think we also have to give credit to Iowa I mean they were down like you said 15 points at times and they really clawed their way back and they made this a really close game in a really exciting game So you know

Maggie:

00:09:03.03 – 00:09:28.61

in some ways it would have been easy for them to phone it in and just finish out the game and take the loss but they really kept fighting they really kept fans on the edge of their seat and I think this is you know sort of only think about the progression of penn state year to year Like this is a game they might have lost last year you know another really close loss after a tough game against a

Maggie:

00:09:28.97 – 00:09:44.54

um you know a strong opponent So this is like to me it seems like this is a game where we can sort of market down in in the win column as a win But also as as a win that might have been a loss for this team last year

Vince:

00:09:44.55 – 00:09:55.46

Yeah this Iowa Hawkeye team I knew coming in there they’re streaky and they can really score in bunches So this is a team that even if they’re down 20 they’re never really out of it

Vince:

00:09:55.64 – 00:10:15.0

So I knew the hot guys would get hot at some point It was just when and Penn State needed to make sure they scored enough And there were a few areas where Penn State did struggle where I hope they improve in the future here especially with you know a tough road test in michigan on Wednesday night

Vince:

00:10:15.4 – 00:10:41.78

Uh so one of those areas is offensive rebounding Uh the Hawkeyes beat up the lines on the glass tonight uh 30 to 27 but the biggest differential there was offensive rebounds Iowa got nine offensive rebounds and Penn State only got one So they need to do a better job boxing out defensively I remember in the first half um

Maggie:

00:10:42.66 – 00:10:42.82

 you

Vince:

00:10:42.82 – 00:11:12.06

know the guys didn’t box out in Iowa got a long rebound off of three and I remember saying to myself you know box out of my seat and two seconds later coach screws is young at the guys to box out So like you know very frustrating is that that is a very fundamental thing that you learn at the junior high level always box out your guy and there’s always gonna be times where you know there is an awkward balance your boxing out your guy and the ball goes over your head and you know right to their area that that does happen on occasion

Vince:

00:11:12.23 – 00:11:32.26

However that should not be happening having the other team get offensive rebounds by the three point line that will never happen if you box out your guy So rebounding is one area where penn State needs to improve The second area that I saw that they could improve was dealing with the press break Um

Vince:

00:11:32.48 – 00:11:52.23

Iowa in the second half they did a 2 to 1 and that was more meant to slow penn state down and not let them move up the florist quickly and move the ball around more and finding giving them more time to find their shooters So this was a you know a good strategy by Iowa It did definitely disrupt Penn State’s offensive rhythm

Vince:

00:11:52.4 – 00:12:03.57

in this game And then later towards the end of the game they ran the full court press Uh this did give penn state some fits at times that they did create one or two turnovers Um

Maggie:

00:12:04.24 – 00:12:04.58

 Kevin

Vince:

00:12:04.58 – 00:12:14.11

Mahaffey did commit one however I do think he he was pushed but you know since he was pushed and kind of going towards the sideline and going out of bounds he did just kind of have to

Vince:

00:12:14.33 – 00:12:43.02

throw it in Iowa is you know able to snag a steal So I do think uh press brake is something that the lines will work on in practice this next week and uh definitely working on those rebounding drills They need to be more competitive especially since there are an undersized teams in a lot of their games So if you’re undersized you gotta box out That’s the only way to remain competitive especially when you play in the conference as big as the big 10 and as competitive as the big 10

Vince:

00:12:43.23 – 00:13:02.45

That’s what you gotta do to win So those are areas that I am looking for Penn State to improve If they did better in those specific areas you wouldn’t have seen Penn State have such a close margin of victory tonight Another area where they did struggle was the free throw line Now

Maggie:

00:13:03.3 – 00:13:03.56

 in

Vince:

00:13:03.56 – 00:13:31.41

terms of not getting as many free throws as Iowa State I do think part of it was was the officiating watching the game tonight A lot of the calls didn’t necessarily go Penn State’s way Uh there you know there seemed a lot of times where Penn State was getting a lot of ticky tack fouls and it wasn’t being called the same both ways There there were times where Penn State you know they you know they might have got shoved a little bit and the ref didn’t call it But then the other end they did it for Iowa

Vince:

00:13:31.58 – 00:13:55.5

and in the entire last 10 minutes of the second half the Hawkeyes you know got a lot of free throw opportunities and that given the big advantage in the game However Penn State in the end did take care of business They were 14 of 16 from the line shooting at 88% in Iowa was only 16 for 22 So the free throw line was another area where Penn State won this game

Maggie:

00:13:55.5 – 00:13:58.67

 tonight And I mean they

Maggie:

00:13:59.46 – 00:14:04.19

the officiating is is out of their control That’s not something that they can

Maggie:

00:14:04.78 – 00:14:34.74

you know improve on as a team and it it can be you know hard to see as a fan when you disagree But I do feel like that’s the kind of thing that probably evens out in the long term in the end But it is always you know frustrating especially when we see someone like um cable get tied up in a lot of fouls when you know this was a game where I think his size and strength we you know really would have been an asset and

Maggie:

00:14:35.08 – 00:14:58.0

so that was tough to see kevin get into trouble you know sort of early in the early into the second half But you know it is what it is and the things that Penn State that you know penn State has in their control to improve and I think will will override any sort of officiating in the end

Vince:

00:14:58.35 – 00:15:23.38

Yeah I do think bringing up cuba is a good point because in that first half I thought he did a really good job defensively of altering shots by Iowa I mean just his you know length and ability to move just if you’re dealing with a defender with a lot of length That’s always a pain you know when you’re playing basketball and cava was doing a really nice job and you know we’re also talking about how

Vince:

00:15:23.63 – 00:15:52.42

you know when Penn State is an offense we’d like to see kevin be a little bit more aggressive and things like getting rebounds He does seem to get pushed around at times However you know when he’s getting these ticky tack fouls called against him you know it doesn’t make it tough for him to be aggressive because he does have to have to worry about getting foul trouble like he did tonight So it’s a it’s a very tough balancing act I do feel like he’s almost getting like picked on at times even though he’s not

Vince:

00:15:52.63 – 00:16:02.21

you know creating a lot of contact or you know doing anything you shouldn’t be doing But hopefully that changes and you know the calls go his way more in the future

Maggie:

00:16:02.22 – 00:16:21.67

Yeah And there were there are times to a couple different times during the game I noticed that cable would would catch the ball at the offense to catch the ball at the top of the key and the paint would be clear every other a lion player was on the perimeter And

Maggie:

00:16:21.91 – 00:16:39.18

I mean just how exciting would it be if Kemba could just drive right by and score You know like there’s there’s just times where I looked so clear for him in the paint that I really wanted to see him just go one on one against his defender and make some big things happen

Vince:

00:16:39.19 – 00:16:43.31

Yeah and I do think part of that uh there is

Maggie:

00:16:43.31 – 00:16:44.33

 more

Vince:

00:16:44.34 – 00:16:51.02

responsibility that needs to be put on the guys on the wing because they’re just kind of whipping the ball in there and

Vince:

00:16:51.24 – 00:17:12.94

you know it’s it’s relatively easy to catch a quick pass like that if you’re cutting to the basket and no one’s on you But when you’re posting up a guy a lot of the times you have to use you know one of those arms to you know hold the defender back behind you and the other hand uh to catch the ball before you bring it to your body and bring back that second hand So it’s it’s definitely a lot more difficult to

Vince:

00:17:13.17 – 00:17:30.64

catch the ball in the post I I know when I played basketball I was a low post guy I I played center for a good portion of my career I I really had a difficult time catching the ball in the low post area as opposed to outside on the perimeter So you know I think that’s something that need they need to keep in mind

Vince:

00:17:30.65 – 00:17:51.56

and pass the ball in there with more touch or try to get a bounce pass to make it easier for Cabot because he’s just getting these you know these really quick passes zipped in there and it’s really difficult for him to catch it especially when there’s a seven ft guy guarding him so his teammates aren’t doing them any favors there So you know that’s an area where you know I think Penn State will watch the film and

Vince:

00:17:51.7 – 00:18:07.83

you know I I think they’ll get that cleaned up However going against michigan on Wednesday they better do it quick because Hunter Dickinson is one of the best centers in the big 10 and not just the big 10 in the country So Penn State will have their hands full on Wednesday night

Maggie:

00:18:08.97 – 00:18:09.66

 Do you have any other

Vince:

00:18:09.67 – 00:18:25.79

Yeah one last thought before we get to our players of the game here is I really liked the timing of Penn State’s double teams tonight There were a lot of times where um Iowa defenders were getting

Vince:

00:18:26.55 – 00:18:30.72

you know to the paint and it seemed like Penn State would bring up

Vince:

00:18:31.46 – 00:18:39.03

a second guy down to double team and create more pressure and they seem to rotate really well and block off the vision And it seemed like

Vince:

00:18:39.78 – 00:19:00.98

the guy that was open Uh it seemed like it was where the Iowa guy couldn’t see them or get the ball to them So I thought their defense did a really good job of double teaming and then when they double teamed they did a nice job rotating to you know take away the closest pass So I thought that was really impressive that time tonight You know not only in the first half but in the second half as well when

Vince:

00:19:01.16 – 00:19:20.6

um I was starting to come back and then Penn State one on that run A lot of that was due to their ability to create some turnovers in the post and just um you know really harass the Hawkeyes with their double team So I think that’s something they need to keep up in the future and uh you know when they time it like that it works really

Maggie:

00:19:20.6 – 00:19:23.39

 well

Maggie:

00:19:24.16 – 00:19:53.3

I think going forward to like the least of the games I’ve seen this year this was the first full court press I had seen put on Penn state and they were bamboozled So I think that like to the point where I was worried that they were not going to get the ball inbounds at times and that Iowa would get that turnover So I think really being able to effectively answer that is going to be

Maggie:

00:19:53.71 – 00:20:17.55

Major especially when they’re facing off against some of these these big 10 teams and as they are creeping closer to tournament play you know that’s that’s really going to be a factor especially in a close game where a coach decides to really just put the heat on for you know a couple plays put on the full court press that Penn State really needs to be able to break it

Vince:

00:20:17.84 – 00:20:38.0

Yeah and Penn State is is a team that doesn’t necessarily have a lot of natural ball handlers So we got Jalen Pickett you know really great point guard I’m not worried about him getting the ball taken away Uh cam winter is responsible with the ball most of the time He was a point guard for four years at Drexel before coming here

Vince:

00:20:38.18 – 00:21:00.2

Uh you know he’s really good at that Outside of that Those are the two guys I know you know will not give the ball away Lundy is a pretty good ball handler and outside of that you don’t see too many guys that are taking more than two or three dribbles for the most part Um you know especially in that middle of the court area on the sideline you know you have fun king

Vince:

00:21:00.43 – 00:21:29.8

and dread that they can do it but not not to the ability that you know Jalen can or cam can you know it’s not gonna get stolen away You even saw coach Shrews throw Kanye Clarion for a minute He he is a good natural ball handler But again uh he’s a freshman when you throw a freshman in there you never really know what’s gonna happen So uh you know that’s an area where Penn State will have to improve and you know I’m sure the other big 10 teams are going to be watching that film and seeing them struggle and

Vince:

00:21:30.01 – 00:21:58.3

You know if they’re in a little bit of Rut they’re definitely going to put on that press especially if it’s a team where they have a deep bench and they can play 10-12 guys you’re going to see that pressure coming than any lines And if they if they get better at breaking it and show that they can score off the press other teams will you know back off and they won’t do that But until pence day proves that they can consistently break the press without turning over the ball Um you know teams are going to continue to do that

Vince:

00:21:59.48 – 00:22:06.55

So players of the game who do you have I’ll let you go first for the Mahoney mauler

Maggie:

00:22:07.22 – 00:22:26.88

This is a tough one because I think there are a lot of worthy candidates And when I say it you say you say if this is who you thought I was going to give it to right 321 No well I was gonna go with Cameron Winter I

Vince:

00:22:26.88 – 00:22:34.68

think that’s a good candidate He was really efficient day Really efficient from his field goals in the first half I think he was

Maggie:

00:22:36.98 – 00:22:37.47

 I

Vince:

00:22:37.47 – 00:22:47.74

think he was like four for four or five or six something like that He was really efficient He finished the game 66 out of nine for field goals and

Maggie:

00:22:48.38 – 00:22:48.66

 he had

Vince:

00:22:48.66 – 00:23:07.56

14 points three rebounds two assists two of three from downtown So he did his job tonight Zero turnovers really efficient game And you know I thought that was a good game on his part one of the better games he’s had at Penn state So you can’t go wrong with can’t go wrong with pam

Maggie:

00:23:07.56 – 00:23:10.37

 Winter

Vince:

00:23:11.03 – 00:23:11.21

 My

Maggie:

00:23:11.21 – 00:23:24.91

runner up was because you know I feel like this is a game that maybe we could look back on in pinpoint the moment where they feel like really came alive in such a reliable way Yeah

Vince:

00:23:24.92 – 00:23:34.08

So I think I’m going to award Evan Mahaffey the bird brawler award Um he just displayed some great toughness tonight He made

Vince:

00:23:34.09 – 00:24:00.34

some really highlights Sportscenter type plays with the blocks in the glass Those were um 22 huge buckets that looked like easy layups for the Hawkeyes And you know Evan Mahaffy was just flying in there like a superhero I I called him Aaron Mahaffey tonight because he was looking like Michael Jordan blocking those shots like really incredible And I was really impressed with his offensive performance too because typically

Vince:

00:24:00.58 – 00:24:10.28

uh he’s more known as as a defensive specialist and then you know if he gets an open lane he’ll take one or two dribbles and do a layup or a dunk if his teammates can find him

Vince:

00:24:10.89 – 00:24:13.89

however he was creating on his own a little bit tonight and

Vince:

00:24:14.54 – 00:24:42.55

it’s really good to see him finish at the basket and I got to give my fidelity fire award to Jalen Pickett And I feel like we’ve almost ignored him for some of these player awards because he does play so good every single game However this is in my opinion this is one of his best games of the season He was really efficient really in control tonight Uh he was 6 to 6 from the free throw line

Vince:

00:24:42.78 – 00:25:03.63

Uh got to the pain and pretty much could do whatever he wanted He was 10 of 16 from the field I think this is a season high 26 points seven rebounds and six assists So he was doing he led the team in rebounds tonight He led the team in assists he led the team and points So I I think I have to give him my Fidelity Fighter award this

Maggie:

00:25:03.63 – 00:25:10.24

week Absolutely I was I was expecting that you would give it to him otherwise I would have given it to him because

Maggie:

00:25:10.46 – 00:25:37.47

I mean like like we talked about on the last time that I was on this show we we don’t ever want to take Jalen Pickett for granted because he does so much for this program and you know to have a guy that you can that can put up a performance like that And you know then we’re like well who else was doing well You know who is like who is a complement to that I think is something that we

Maggie:

00:25:38.01 – 00:25:49.46

you know as as fans it’s so much fun to root for Jalen and to you know I’d rather I would be nervous playing against him You know he was playing for another team

Vince:

00:25:49.47 – 00:26:01.57

Yeah And really there wasn’t really one guy on penn state who had a bad game tonight Like Funk was four or four from three in the first half He had 20 points tonight seven and 12 shooting from the field

Vince:

00:26:01.78 – 00:26:27.81

Lundy had 10 points in the second half So he got a little off to a little bit of a slow start offensively But he did finish the game really strong He actually had the game winning steel at the end and and made those two clutch free throws to ice the game so that you know that was really imperative especially since Funk missed a couple free throws when you know when it’s his turn which is really uncharacteristic cause with how good of a shooter he is um

Vince:

00:26:28.2 – 00:26:52.53

you know really really uncommon to see him not hit those shots mild dread was really efficient today Just like cam winter he was three or four So you know all in all this was a you know a great team performance um than any lines I wasn’t really super disappointed in anyone’s performance tonight I thought they all did a good job and this is a big team win from Lions

Maggie:

00:26:53.03 – 00:27:03.59

You know like we were saying when we’re charting the progression of this team this is a win that maybe would not have been a win You know even like earlier this season So yeah

Vince:

00:27:03.59 – 00:27:21.69

And this team this isn’t anything new with them struggling to find ways to close out and win the game and I will really brought on the pressure But you know Penn State did enough to win the game And that’s what you gotta do in the big 10 You got to survive in advance every single game matters And in the big 10

Vince:

00:27:21.89 – 00:27:26.01

if you want to be going to the N C Double A Tournament you gotta win

Vince:

00:27:26.62 – 00:27:49.22

Most if not all of your games at home like home court advantage You got to take advantage of it and then you got to try to find a way to win half your road games So take care of business at home win half your road games That’s how you get a double by in the big time because this is a really competitive conference and you know you’re not gonna have any of these teams winning 80% of these conference games It’s just not gonna happen

Vince:

00:27:50.26 – 00:28:18.4

Yeah so moving on Yeah next next step for the Lions We got the michigan wolverines they’ll be playing january 4th That would be Wednesday They’ll be playing at seven p.m. On Big 10 network in ann arbor Um This was a very tough game last year So this was a game where they played in the B J C Uh Penn State last year Got off to a lead really early They created a big lead

Vince:

00:28:18.61 – 00:28:47.6

However this was the infamous game where Penn State had a scoring drought of over 12 minutes and Michigan just slowly clawed their way back into the game And even though Penn State had had a stretch of 12 minutes with no points which is over a quarter of the game uh they only lost 58-57 at home and you know there were a couple suspect officiating calls um what are your thoughts as they play Michigan

Vince:

00:28:47.9 – 00:28:49.41

 I

Maggie:

00:28:49.42 – 00:29:04.03

Mean I don’t think the officials got in Penn State’s own way of not scoring for 12 straight minutes So hopefully we don’t see another drought that big and that was something we would see last season in

Maggie:

00:29:05.05 – 00:29:24.81

in you know different games never quite a 12 minute one But I feel like that’s something that we have not been seeing this season as we haven’t been seeing these like extended scoring droughts to the same same level we did last year So I mean I don’t I don’t know much about what the michigan team

Maggie:

00:29:25.07 – 00:29:39.77

looks like this year but for Penn State to only finish a few points away after you know not scoring for so long seems like it’ll be a good game As long as they don’t do the

Maggie:

00:29:40.78 – 00:29:44.55

State College special Is that what you want to call it State

Vince:

00:29:44.55 – 00:29:50.49

College special Not scoring for 12 minutes I think they will do better That would be my communion

Maggie:

00:29:50.49 – 00:29:51.99

 prediction They

Vince:

00:29:52.0 – 00:30:06.3

Don’t have 12 minutes of no no points Yeah I think they will do better This is a tough game in Michigan is a really good team However sometimes uh you know there on occasion they will drop an egg So

Vince:

00:30:06.52 – 00:30:27.98

Michigan’s record is only eight and five this year However uh this michigan wolverine basketball team has been very battle tested One of their losses was on the road at Arizona State in november They lost that one by 25 but that was really the only game they got whooped Other than that they have some really close losses

Vince:

00:30:28.15 – 00:30:38.53

They lost to Virginia who was one of the best teams in the if not the best team in the A C C They lost by two points 70 to 68

Maggie:

00:30:39.16 – 00:30:39.4

 They

Vince:

00:30:39.4 – 00:31:07.58

also played Kentucky who you know is one of those blue blood programs in college basketball They only lost by 4 73 to 69 They lost to the north Carolina Tar heels 80 to 76 at north Carolina in Chapel hill That’s one of the harder places to win in college basketball And then they kind of dropped an egg at home Uh Last weekend thursday the 29th when Penn state had their game versus Delaware State Uh

Vince:

00:31:07.91 – 00:31:33.49

Michigan got upset at home to central michigan 63 to 61 However I think they responded that well as they beat a ranked Maryland team 81 to 46 So they gave them a whooping and won by 35 points at home So I do think Juwan Howard has this team fired up and they are very angry Uh This michigan team is led by Hunter Dickinson

Vince:

00:31:33.7 – 00:31:52.6

He is one of the best centers in the country in that matchup they had against the terrapins He played 28 minutes and had 32 points and 12 rebounds on 13 of 16 shooting So you know this is a guy who he is very

Vince:

00:31:52.61 – 00:32:16.08

so not only does he do a great job in the post Uh he’s a good passer he’s a good rebounder He also has a nice mid range jumper he gets blocks on defense He’s 71 £260 So not only is he tall and long he’s also very strong So uh you know CUba is definitely going to have his hands full Um

Vince:

00:32:16.51 – 00:32:26.59

you know it might almost be worth trying to put in a smaller lineup So maybe having miles Dredd or Seth lundy at the center position

Vince:

00:32:26.76 – 00:32:54.54

that way they can stretch the floor and draw Hunter Dickinson out of the paint that way Jalen Pickett is able to operate and then hopefully find some shooters that might be a strategy that Penn state utilizes However stopping and defensively if you want to stop michigan from scoring I would say CUBA is probably your only shot at stopping Hunter Dickinson However if you want to try to beat michigan via an offensive shootout

Vince:

00:32:54.71 – 00:33:00.34

I think the small ball lineup might be the way to go on this one as you know he’s their best player

Vince:

00:33:00.96 – 00:33:28.83

and uh another guy you have to watch out for is Jet Howard And if that last name sounds familiar that’s because his dad is the coach This is the son of Juwan Howard He’s a freshman this year and he’s been doing a great job this year He’s been averaging 30 minutes a game and averaging 15 points Uh so this is a guy that can handle the basketball really well He can you know get to the pain He’s 68 has a lot of handling skills he shoots well So

Vince:

00:33:29.31 – 00:33:48.94

he does really everything well that you want and you know in a recruit uh he’s definitely not just there because his dad’s the coach this kid can ball And another guy who’s good uh is uh Kobe bumpkin Uh he’s averaging a lot of minutes and he’s also you know scoring in double figures So he’s another guy that Penn State is going

Vince:

00:33:48.94 – 00:34:18.77

have to watch out for um you know the number one challenge if I’m playing this game is I’m trying to find a way to slow Hunter Dickinson down especially since Penn State they’re in an undersized team The only guy who is remotely close to this guy in terms of size and length is Kabah and if he gets in foul trouble like he did tonight it could be a long night for the lines playing on the right at Michigan is one of the harder places to play

Vince:

00:34:18.97 – 00:34:29.23

In the big 10 that they have a lot of fans there and that place is always loud Um I would say stopping Jett Howard is probably um what you wanna do

Vince:

00:34:29.96 – 00:34:44.17

as a secondary option I think putting Seth lundy on him is the best way to slow him down and then having Jalen pickett guarding Kobe bumpkin you know I think that would be the way to go and slowing down this uh michigan wolverine team

Maggie:

00:34:44.18 – 00:34:53.69

absolutely big streak of teams with father’s coaching sons Right Don’t we see that in Iowa

Vince:

00:34:53.7 – 00:34:57.73

Yeah we just saw that Iowa you know Mccaffrey has two sons on

Vince:

00:34:58.0 – 00:35:10.39

His squad and then uh next year coach Bruce is gonna be welcome and braiding to the Penn State family So you know very exciting Lots of sons playing for their fathers in the in the big 10

Maggie:

00:35:11.06 – 00:35:23.62

I think it’s fun I like doing my dad was my coach he coached my basketball team through middle school and then but sometimes I’m like oh he was pretty good at that

Vince:

00:35:24.25 – 00:35:28.65

You know I definitely probably didn’t want to have my dad as a coach But

Maggie:

00:35:28.66 – 00:35:29.72

 I

Vince:

00:35:29.73 – 00:35:43.04

Will I will I will say when I actually started listening to my dad from 7th to 8th grade he was giving me drills and to do and all of a sudden I went from third string to starting on my eighth grade team So when I listen to my dad

Vince:

00:35:43.21 – 00:36:09.5

you know who’s the coach and it’s crazy when you listen to basketball coaches you get better So you know when I finally learned that hey I should listen to him He knows the stuff He was a pretty good ball player than uh that’s when I started finding success So you know when I got you know more playing time and started scoring more and doing better defensively I definitely owe that to my dad and the work that he did with me in the offseason That’s definitely when I made my biggest growth as a basketball player So

Vince:

00:36:09.66 – 00:36:27.09

you know definitely like you know with your family dynamic you know it can be tough if you’re doing it every day But I am really lucky that I have my dad to help me grow as a player in the off season And you know working on all those skill drills just to get better at handling the basketball and working on post moves and shooting and

Vince:

00:36:27.66 – 00:36:38.42

layups and mike the George michael drill and you know all that good stuff So you know if your father is a basketball coach you know listen to them they probably know their stuff

Maggie:

00:36:39.01 – 00:36:43.6

Go down to the North Hampton Y M C A And see my dad in action

Vince:

00:36:44.37 – 00:36:52.67

So moving on to Communion predictions what is your prediction for Penn State versus the Wolverines

Maggie:

00:36:52.68 – 00:36:53.75

 one

Vince:

00:36:53.75 – 00:36:55.21

 prediction for the game

Maggie:

00:36:56.3 – 00:37:00.12

I’ll do a four minute drought

Vince:

00:37:01.62 – 00:37:06.02

So Penn State will not go four minutes or longer without scoring

Maggie:

00:37:06.56 – 00:37:11.12

So I’m saying that the drought length will be approximately four minutes

Vince:

00:37:11.13 – 00:37:20.52

Okay so Penn State’s long scoring drought will be four minutes Okay so that would be interesting My communion prediction

Vince:

00:37:21.45 – 00:37:43.63

I think we’re going to see a big game from jail in Pickett I think we’re gonna see him doing a lot of work getting to the post I do think you might see some small ball lineups So I think that Jalen Pickett will have a triple double in this game and that will be his triple second triple double of the season

Vince:

00:37:44.47 – 00:37:52.18

Final score prediction What do you have for this game now that you know a little bit more about michigan what do you think the final score will be

Maggie:

00:37:52.19 – 00:38:06.11

Well I think last year was a really low scoring game So I’m gonna bump it up a little bit higher I’m gonna say Michigan 76 Penn State

Maggie:

00:38:07.55 – 00:38:08.9

 77

Vince:

00:38:08.91 – 00:38:31.22

Penn State winning by one I like that one point So it’ll be the opposite result from last year Yeah I’m kind of with you where I think we are going to see a lot more scoring I do think that Penn State might struggle scoring early I do think capital will start this game and

Vince:

00:38:31.67 – 00:38:52.22

you know I think that the paint could get crowded early and I think that’s gonna make it a lot more difficult for Jalen Pickett to get to the paint and create for his teammates and I do think cable will do alright guarding hunter Dickinson defensively he has shown to be a pretty good defensive player

Vince:

00:38:52.38 – 00:39:21.08

However I do think that at some point in the game michigan is going to start to pull away and I do think you will see penn State shift to a small ball lineup and you know it will get more into which team can outscore the other However I just I don’t have a good feeling about this one on the road They do play michigan twice this year So I do think we can get them at home but with michigan just coming off a high and

Vince:

00:39:21.37 – 00:39:47.32

um you know they really underestimated central michigan didn’t execute the best game and then they came out and took Maryland to the wood shed who’s you know top top top 25 quality basketball team I don’t think they were going to underestimate penn state after how competitive penn state was with them last year So I do think michigan will bring their a game and I think the final score would be Michigan 80 for penn state 70

Maggie:

00:39:47.32 – 00:39:48.78

 three

Maggie:

00:39:49.23 – 00:39:51.29
