Vince:

00:00:18.69 – 00:00:30.48

Yeah it was a good holiday I definitely picked up a cold going home over the holiday But other than that it was great to see family and friends and exchange food and drinks and have a good time How about you

Andrew:

00:00:30.49 – 00:00:42.265

Yeah it was good We had a lot of travel lined up just because my girlfriend’s family lives on the Jersey shore and my family as you know lives in Central P A So we just had a lot of driving uh

Andrew:

00:00:42.275 – 00:01:05.86

going on So it was kind of an adventure having to you know pack all the gifts and the dogs into the car and head out to the Jersey shore But it was a really good time A lot of great food a lot of great company Um and a lot of great football as well even though our eagles lost a heartbreaker to the cowboys You know it was still fun to kind of have all that football to watch over Um christmas eve and christmas day and whatnot So it was fun

Vince:

00:01:06.42 – 00:01:16.7

Yeah And I definitely have a relaxed um this this past week probably more than I have the entire past you know 34 months So it was definitely much needed

Andrew:

00:01:17.34 – 00:01:25.59

Yeah Amen to that But it goes by so quickly I mean we were just kind of looking at the calendar earlier this week and we’re like holy crap we have to go back to work tomorrow

Vince:

00:01:25.6 – 00:01:33.55

Yeah so yeah definitely Perk Sabina teachers you do get a little bit of a longer lay off on your holiday break

Andrew:

00:01:33.56 – 00:01:34.96

 but then

Vince:

00:01:34.96 – 00:01:38.85

you get a long grind till you know summer break So

Andrew:

00:01:39.43 – 00:01:42.93

is that is that what you guys call it in your inner circle The long grind

Vince:

00:01:42.94 – 00:02:05.49

Yeah it’s a long grind cause you know you know other people you I guess you more get to choose when you take your vacation but as teachers we don’t get too many really vacation days so we can’t just take a week off in the middle of the school year So uh you know while I would love a you know nice escape in a week in like the middle of winter and P A to go to like California or something it’s just

Vince:

00:02:06.05 – 00:02:07.98

 isn’t necessarily in the cards

Andrew:

00:02:07.99 – 00:02:33.45

Yeah I got you Uh so you know kind of getting back on track with our business here This is actually kind of a special episode as this is our 50th recorded episode of the podcast which just thinking back to the fact that you know we started this back in august previewing the upcoming season It seems like time has really flown by So what do you think of 50 episodes Vince

Vince:

00:02:34.12 – 00:02:43.05

Man it’s crazy Uh we just started this up in August and here we are 50 episodes in lots of great listeners and uh excited for the next 50

Andrew:

00:02:43.06 – 00:02:59.09

Yeah Amen to that I mean it’s it’s crazy to think how far things have come in just a short amount of time I mean we’ve got football content basketball content we have our own merch you know there’s a lot of things going on So we’re excited for what 2023 has in store for us and uh

Andrew:

00:02:59.27 – 00:03:23.45

you know for the 50th episode we wanted to do something that was kind of fun um just to kind of mark this occasion And so the idea that Vince had come up with is recounting some of our favorite moments players and games from this past season but also just to share some of our favorite moments um across Penn State football of all time Uh so you know I think that’ll be kind of a fun conversation to have here in a little bit but

Andrew:

00:03:23.69 – 00:03:32.61

as we always do we’re going to start here with the Penn State Athletics round table so we can get you all of the updates that is happening around the nation So vince I’m going to turn the floor over to you

Vince:

00:03:33.35 – 00:04:02.05

Yeah so Men’s basketball has been on a roll to finish off the new Year We did get a couple of holiday gifts So Seth lundy was out for Penn State’s 77 to 68 victory over Quinnipiac However he did return today looked great love the team in points with 15 points and 10 rebounds as they beat Delaware State 60 to 46 definitely was a little bit of an anemic offensive performance Uh They had a lot of open threes and just didn’t knock them down But

Vince:

00:04:02.35 – 00:04:31.93

uh you know got the W 10 and three heading into the New year They’ll be facing the Hawkeyes on New Year’s Day at 5 30 at home and then Wednesday they’ll be at michigan at seven p.m. That would be on Big 10 network And then on the sunday they’re going to be at the polestar a hosting the number one Purdue boilermakers at six p.m. That would be on B T N If you’re near Philly definitely head out there and root for your Penn State Nittany Lions

Vince:

00:04:32.19 – 00:04:56.95

the women’s team They moved to nine and four in the season They gave cornella but would have been 79 to 48 they’ll be playing Rutgers tomorrow the 30th at five PM at home and then they’ll be taking a travel to ann arbor to face the michigan wolverines on january 3rd at one p.m. And they’ll also be facing Perdue at home on january the seventh

Vince:

00:04:57.6 – 00:05:18.91

versus Purdue at home at two p.m. Men’s Hockey is going back into action tomorrow They’ll be at our I T They have a five p.m. Puck drop followed by our I T At home on the 31st New Year’s Eve 5 30 PM We’ll get some hockey and Hockey Valley so it’ll be exciting to watch And they also have some interesting news Ben Copeland

Vince:

00:05:19.1 – 00:05:29.71

Uh Senior on the squad has actually been activated for his pro contract So he’s going to be playing on the Cleveland monsters now which is the H L Team

Vince:

00:05:30.47 – 00:05:44.37

Uh They’re kind of the affiliate under the columbus blue jackets so he’s gonna be there for the rest of the season So that’s a tough loss for Penn State men’s hockey in the middle of their season So they’ll look to stay in the top five and continue their good season

Vince:

00:05:44.57 – 00:06:13.89

And then women’s hockey is gonna finish off off of some games here at home after school ice arena They’re playing the 30th at two p.m. And New Year’s Eve at one PM versus Long Island University Men’s wrestling continue doing their thing They’re seven and oh they beat number five Iowa state 22 to 12 and on the eighth they’ll be at Wisconsin at nine p.m. On the Big 10 network Uh Andrew which of these teams makes you most excited

Andrew:

00:06:15.06 – 00:06:32.67

Um You know I would say it’s probably men’s hockey Um Just because you know we’ve kind of been waiting for them to return to kind of that top five status um back to the time when they were briefly number one in the country Um and you know I think that honestly just speaks to

Andrew:

00:06:32.68 – 00:06:50.3

just how dominant men’s wrestling has been over the past decade really because you know you you want to say that it’s them just with being like number one they handle the top five opponent uh pretty easily and stuff like that But we’re just so used to their greatness and stuff So I’d probably say men’s hockey right now

Vince:

00:06:51.88 – 00:07:10.84

Yeah I think the hockey team you know gives me so much excitement because last couple the last couple of years haven’t been uh quite up to the standard of Penn State hockey and to see them you know really doing well And yes they have had more games at home than on the road and it is tough to win

Andrew:

00:07:10.85 – 00:07:11.39

 in the big

Vince:

00:07:11.39 – 00:07:20.95

10 especially sweep So I’m looking for them to do more of that But yeah really promising start for Penn State hockey as they look to uh you know

Andrew:

00:07:21.28 – 00:07:22.05

 when when

Vince:

00:07:22.05 – 00:07:25.66

Throughout the regular season so that they can host some games in the big 10

Andrew:

00:07:25.66 – 00:07:26.91

 tournament

Vince:

00:07:27.65 – 00:07:42.51

Another cool fact we’re gonna be talking a lot about different drafts today is in the major league soccer super draft they call it We have three Nittany Lions selected uh you know to make the leap to professional soccer players So we had

Vince:

00:07:43.61 – 00:08:08.1

uh see we lean butts get drafted 33rd to SAn SAn Jose earthquakes just above him Jalen Watson got drafted 32nd overall to the Toronto Football Club And Andrew privet got selected 69 to the charlotte football clubs There’s there is now three new lions uh in major league soccer So that’s definitely another cool factoid I wanted to drop in there

Andrew:

00:08:08.53 – 00:08:15.14

Yeah that’s awesome Especially after the season that the men’s team had So really seems like those guys are capitalizing on their career

Vince:

00:08:15.77 – 00:08:43.86

Yeah And another fun factor that I have you we talked about Utah a little bit earlier is it kind of goes with our theme of the mountains we have around here in Happy Valley So back to one of our first episodes we talked about Purdue mountain and that was one of the fun fun memories we had As I said okay we’re gonna be Purdue because I had my fastest biking time up this mountain So the Nittany Lions are gonna therefore crush Purdue on the road So that was a fun thing

Vince:

00:08:44.09 – 00:09:12.99

But another thing I learned this week is that at tussey Mountain uh they have a lot of events out there skiing is very popular and one of the slopes they have is Utah it’s called you know the Utah are out and on top of that before you ski down I guess there’s a beautiful view of beaver stadium from up there So the next from the 30th to the for their sorry the 31st to the second

Vince:

00:09:13.24 – 00:09:28.61

it is going to be called the Pennsylvania route So they’re actually changing the name for these next couple of days as uh you know Penn State gets prepared to play the youth So you know even though they’ve never played in school history the rivalry is starting to heat up here in Happy Valley

Andrew:

00:09:28.62 – 00:09:35.2

That’s right Yeah You can’t take any chances You gotta uh leverage every opportunity to be superstitious

Vince:

00:09:35.21 – 00:09:38.36

Exactly And it kind of reminds you of

Vince:

00:09:38.63 – 00:09:45.8

you know when the Eagles played the patriots in super Bowl and they change like the boston market to like fill in the market for a week And dude

Andrew:

00:09:45.8 – 00:09:56.15

I have an I have an excellent story about that That kind of falls right in line with this So um when the eagles played the pats one of my roommates at the time

Andrew:

00:09:56.68 – 00:10:26.625

uh was and is still a patriots fan and so going into the game it was very cordial between the two of us were very cool about it Like just kind of joking back and forth with each other Um and he’s just an awesome guy So I wouldn’t want to like rip him too hard or anything like that But the morning of the game he had a set of LED lights kind of in a strip um around the ceiling in his room that could change colors and the morning of the game he turned

Andrew:

00:10:26.635 – 00:10:44.205

and they turned bright green and he couldn’t change the color So I took that as an omen that the eagles were going to win because the Patriots fan turned on his lights um which he could set to any color that he wanted but it just automatically defaulted to green and he couldn’t change it

Vince:

00:10:44.215 – 00:10:52.66

Dude that’s hilarious Like I thought you were gonna tell me that you woke up at like four a.m before him or something and you just changed it to green Like man I get it

Vince:

00:10:52.96 – 00:10:56.08

 I don’t know if you’re if you’re responsible for

Andrew:

00:10:56.08 – 00:11:04.54

that Yeah I mean maybe maybe one of these days I’ll have a story like that But now this was just the universe Just telling him your time is up

Vince:

00:11:06.14 – 00:11:15.99

Oh yeah for sure So that that was definitely pretty cool So speaking of fun moments from the past year do you have a favorite moment of the season

Andrew:

00:11:16.7 – 00:11:43.18

Well you know I there there are a lot um with this being a near top 10 team at the end of the season um after the championship games have wrapped up I mean it’s hard to really pin it down to one but I would say my favorite moment from this season has to be Nick Singleton’s 52 yard touchdown run against Auburn And the reason why I point that out is because um

Andrew:

00:11:43.32 – 00:11:47.84

that was just kind of like a I’m here moment for him Um

Andrew:

00:11:48.4 – 00:12:13.65

josh Pate who we’ve talked about before on this show um kind of talked about Nick Singleton and just kind of the prominence of the five stars the five star recruits That is and how they kind of have this moment where they just announced themselves on the scene and he called it the Five Star moment and that was the five star moment you know he just blew by the defenders um really just put the cherry on top too

Andrew:

00:12:14.38 – 00:12:30.62

fairly dominant Penn State victory over the tigers Um That was just awesome to see just him putting on a display of raw speed um as an 18 year old And so that has to be my favorite moment but now that we’re into this main segment here Vince um what was your favorite moment

Vince:

00:12:31.07 – 00:12:43.1

Well that’s next That’s a funny quote That makes me think of the it’s always sunny episode where Dennis Reynolds is like I’m a five star man Yeah next to me and I’m a five star man

Andrew:

00:12:43.11 – 00:12:47.91

Maybe Maybe he you know he he was moving so fast he probably yelled it and nobody heard it

Vince:

00:12:47.92 – 00:12:49.04

 probably

Vince:

00:12:50.15 – 00:12:56.43

And then it’s great because on this like dating app Dennis gets like all these like one star like zero star reviews

Andrew:

00:12:56.43 – 00:12:57.56

 and

Vince:

00:12:58.52 – 00:13:04.8

but I I think Nick would do a much better than Dennis Reynolds in the dating apps

Vince:

00:13:06.01 – 00:13:14.18

Yeah so I think my favorite moment of the season The one play might be that Sean Clifford passed too

Vince:

00:13:14.88 – 00:13:33.56

Keep only actually against Purdue week one to kind of give them the lead and that was the game that I was really worried about heading into the first game of the season It had that funky weird like thursday night kickoff Purdue had a blackout so their crowd is very loud very hostile environment and

Vince:

00:13:34.15 – 00:13:46.45

the poise of sean to be able to you know take us down the field at the end after he just threw an interception a series or two before and then to you know get us a touchdown for like the lead and then the defense held on and

Vince:

00:13:46.97 – 00:13:51.42

I think that was probably my favourite one single play or moment of the

Andrew:

00:13:51.42 – 00:13:52.09

 season

Vince:

00:13:52.6 – 00:13:53.78

 because

Andrew:

00:13:53.79 – 00:13:54.58

 let’s face it

Vince:

00:13:54.59 – 00:14:19.53

Like this podcast would not have been near as much fun if we like lost week one and kind of had that you know it’s fun to have the undefeated streak going So if we would have just lost that week one kind of would have sucked some other big place where that rented strange like 64 yard touchdown right before the half versus Purdue that was another one uh strange out of that other crazy catch against Indiana were like

Vince:

00:14:19.72 – 00:14:36.16

the defender was like in between him and the ball and he somehow was like able to hold on to it That was another big play and then the next singleton kickoff return for the touchdown where he just kind of mimicked sae kwon Barkley I thought that was kind of cool as well So those are probably

Vince:

00:14:36.37 – 00:14:40.18

My Top five Singular Moments or Single Plays of the Season

Andrew:

00:14:40.19 – 00:15:01.04

Yeah and I you know what’s what’s also crazy to think about in hindsight with that we’ve only touchdown is that he was injured earlier on in that game like so we weren’t sure how much he was going to be playing in the rest of that game and then you know he didn’t flinch he caught that ball didn’t drop it we saw a couple of pass catchers drop a few balls in that game and

Andrew:

00:15:01.17 – 00:15:28.1

he just stayed true So you know kind of like a hero moment for both him and sean so can’t really be overlooked given where we stand right now And it’s kind of funny to think that you know the very first game of the season on a thursday before you know week one had truly even kicked off Penn State had beaten the big 10 West champion So kind of funny to think about that in hindsight but uh yeah so kind of expanding on this idea though so we have moments we have plays But

Andrew:

00:15:28.34 – 00:15:33.07

um game what would you say is your favorite game of this past season

Vince:

00:15:34.12 – 00:15:52.32

I would say my favorite game was the white out versus Minnesota We were there together we had some friends come up one it was their first white out and actually the other one I think it was their first Penn State game and they were just like wow this is nuts And

Vince:

00:15:53.05 – 00:16:22.84

let’s face it it was definitely Minnesota’s first white out game too because their offense just looked completely discombobulated their false starts everywhere and you just knew um even though the the our our offense got off to a little bit of a slow start you knew their their offense wasn’t gonna put up like 40 points Like we did like I think they scored I think the final score was what 44 to 17 maybe and Penn State just dominated That was just a fun game After getting

Vince:

00:16:23.05 – 00:16:34.76

beat up my michigan we were thinking there might be a bit of a hangover and you know we just punched Minnesota in the mouth and we’re the tougher team So I think that was probably my favorite game of the season How about you

Andrew:

00:16:34.96 – 00:16:58.37

Yeah that’s a great choice And you know I kind of predicted that you were gonna say that because that honestly is my favorite to um just the atmosphere Um just all the build up night game like Penn State blowout victory against an opponent who hasn’t been in a white out before like that I mean all of it just kind of made for a perfect storm of a really really cool atmosphere Uh so I had to kind of divert to

Andrew:

00:16:58.38 – 00:17:21.8

to my one b if you will and that would be the the the auburn game So you know I know I picked next touchdown against Auburn is my favorite moment but that game against Auburn was just so so sweet you know just all the build up to it with like you know Auburn saying oh like you know Penn State’s not ready for sec country and

Andrew:

00:17:21.93 – 00:17:25.38

like this hostile road environment they have there

Vince:

00:17:25.39 – 00:17:26.88

 it’s gonna be too hot

Andrew:

00:17:26.89 – 00:17:33.36

right Yeah And it’s like oh like we’re gonna we’re gonna like just trivialize the white out by putting together this you know

Andrew:

00:17:34.16 – 00:18:03.78

like clearly superior orange out and stuff like that They’re not gonna be able to handle the noise and like and you know and like I guess to their credit they did punch Penn State first with that hard hit against Sean to knock the ball out But like pretty much from that moment on it was all Penn State and uh you know got it did it did it the hard way like just ran the ball down their throats didn’t let them move an inch on the ground and got a handful of turnovers I mean just talk about just shutting down

Andrew:

00:18:03.94 – 00:18:23.88

an sec opponent And so it was just super sweet Kind of solidified Penn State’s um legitimacy as a ranked team in the country Um you know kind of just got and you know what what’s what’s really crazy to think is like you know leading up to that It was like you know brian Carson like the team is off to like a pretty good start after a rocky off season

Andrew:

00:18:24.12 – 00:18:50.14

Um things seem to have like solidified they have some really highly touted recruits coming in for that game And so you know this could be kind of the launch pad for a really successful campaign for him and the tigers And then within 24 hours the conversation shifted to How long does brian Carson have until until he’s fired Like that’s just how impactful that Penn State win was So I think just from top to bottom that is uh my my solid one B

Andrew:

00:18:50.28 – 00:18:51.19

 game

Vince:

00:18:53.46 – 00:19:10.77

and that was definitely my one B as well You know obviously I think it’s more fun if you’re actually at the game in person but watching that game was so much fun I watched that with my roommate and his one friend And it was so funny because whenever I happened to pop open a beer

Vince:

00:19:11.19 – 00:19:29.56

Penn State was able to force a turnover And then whenever my roommate would like get a new beer Penn State would score a touchdown So like whenever like Penn State was on defense and like vince quick grab another beer like you gotta get your turnover beer I’m like okay so and then like whenever we got the ball

Andrew:

00:19:29.56 – 00:19:30.13

 back

Vince:

00:19:30.46 – 00:19:37.4

and like zack go get your touchdown beer So we’re kind of going back and forth That was just it was complete domination

Andrew:

00:19:37.71 – 00:19:39.15

 given the number of times

Vince:

00:19:39.15 – 00:19:39.81

 that we

Andrew:

00:19:39.82 – 00:19:45.67

yeah given the number of times that we turned the ball over and scored you guys probably hammered by the time that game was over

Vince:

00:19:46.87 – 00:19:55.76

Yeah I think it might have been like for each or something So it was quite a bit we have we were doing it until it didn’t work so

Andrew:

00:19:55.77 – 00:19:56.54

 right

Andrew:

00:19:57.32 – 00:19:58.23

 Yes

Vince:

00:19:59.07 – 00:20:11.49

Yeah So that was a good time and definitely had a lot of lot of lot of laughs and really got to enjoy pence a just you know taking taking the sec team auburn to the wood shed yet

Andrew:

00:20:11.49 – 00:20:12.88

 again

Vince:

00:20:14.12 – 00:20:18.7

Alright so what about your favorite player of the season Who do you got

Andrew:

00:20:19.55 – 00:20:44.35

So there’s a lot to choose from here as well and I’ve gone back and forth on this and I think my favorite player from the season is Abdul carter and the reason why I specifically shout him out is because of just the just the explosion that he had coming onto the scene as a Penn State defender Um you know not only in the big 10 but on a national scale you know he’s been put on

Andrew:

00:20:44.5 – 00:21:11.07

these freshmen all american teams and stuff like that and he only really had is you know the height of his production in the second half of the season but that just shows you just how impactful he was and you know like all you have to do is watch him for a game to kind of see that he’s this rare talent Um kind of in the Micah Parsons and lavar Arrington type of space where you know even as a freshman he is going to impact the game Um no matter

Andrew:

00:21:11.08 – 00:21:40.45

What stage it is it could be the first minute or it could be the 40th minute Like he’s gonna be all over the field he’s gonna be harassing the quarterback and that kind of stuff is rare So you know I think that Penn State should count their lucky stars that he’s wearing the blue and white Um I actually did get to see his billboard um with the personal injury lawyer Remember how we were talking about like he has a billboard with the with a lawyer Um so I saw it and you want to know where it is

Andrew:

00:21:41.34 – 00:21:50.19

So it’s um you know on the stretch of 322 where it’s like you have like the sheets the rudders and then there’s like a couple of strip clubs

Vince:

00:21:50.2 – 00:21:51.24

 Oh yeah

Andrew:

00:21:51.25 – 00:21:52.63

 it’s there

Vince:

00:21:52.64 – 00:21:53.46

 That’s great

Andrew:

00:21:53.47 – 00:21:55.05

 Yeah So you

Vince:

00:21:55.05 – 00:22:01.66

like usually when I’m driving home from like Philly or something to my parents house like I always know once I hit the

Vince:

00:22:01.67 – 00:22:03.38

that area I’m getting close to

Andrew:

00:22:03.38 – 00:22:27.58

Home Yeah because I mean that’s that’s where you get on the exit for 11 and 15 But yeah we were um we were actually going to ceiling screw for uh for Christmas to go and spend with my family and we crossed the bridge Um right before that exit and I’m like Holy Crap there it is So yeah just kind of a funny location But yeah I can now I can say I’ve seen the billboard

Vince:

00:22:27.88 – 00:22:38.16

Yeah so I think this was very fair that that we did kind of take each others Like I took your favorite football game and you kind of took my probably favorite player

Andrew:

00:22:38.16 – 00:22:38.94

 like

Vince:

00:22:38.95 – 00:22:44.34

just so elite and so fast and that the second half of the season

Vince:

00:22:44.89 – 00:22:45.68

 we’re just

Vince:

00:22:46.47 – 00:22:55.83

he it just looked like he was a missile launching through any open gap and just you know tackling defenders for tackles for loss at will And like

Vince:

00:22:56.38 – 00:23:00.01

those you know those last four games of the season were just incredible to

Andrew:

00:23:00.01 – 00:23:01.89

 watch I

Vince:

00:23:01.89 – 00:23:05.48

think I think my my one b uh

Vince:

00:23:06.07 – 00:23:33.7

so I’ll go the guy from the first half of the season who you saw a little bit more from him Brenton strange Uh he was obviously doing whatever the coaches told him to do throughout the season but you just saw some incredible plays Uh he had the most touchdown catches this year for Penn State Uh did some great blocking had that incredible catch against indiana He had the big crazy 60 yard touchdown run against Purdue So I think I’m gonna go with Brenton strange

Andrew:

00:23:34.09 – 00:23:57.14

Good stuff Yeah I mean he just looks like the complete package at tight end and I think that’s a big reason why he announced his move to the NFL So you know I think he’ll be um he’ll be a catch for any team that drafts him very much like you know my Kasicky and Pat fryer move after him you know Penn State’s kind of um spreading out these tight ends to uh to the next level

Vince:

00:23:57.93 – 00:24:17.37

Yeah he’s the guy I’d be really happy to see on the birds because I’ve looked at some draft websites and Brenton stranger’s name hasn’t really been up there necessarily like higher in the ranks Like the only guys I’ve really seen or Joey porter in the first round I’ve seen parker Washington is like a late second

Vince:

00:24:17.94 – 00:24:43.62

and then really after that there’s not really many Penn State guys up there in like the top 200 or 300 spots or if they are there you know right towards the very bottom And I know that we know just from watching guys in the past Penn State has more than two NFL quality quality you know starters So um you know there’s gonna be some teams who really luck out by drafting guys like Brent and strange and juice Scruggs

Vince:

00:24:43.88 – 00:24:48.58

nick Carr Burton So you know Penn State is going to be continue

Vince:

00:24:48.89 – 00:24:51.43

is and will continue to do some big things in the NFL

Andrew:

00:24:51.44 – 00:25:15.95

Yeah I can actually see Brenton um kind of being one of those draft board risers over the next you know coming weeks and months just because like his announcement to the draft is fairly new So I think once the scouts and teams are you know get a chance to look at more of his film I think he might project more as like a like a second round guy maybe like early third round because

Andrew:

00:25:16.15 – 00:25:34.38

I mean like you want to talk about everything that you want an NFL tight end to do uh like Britain does it you know he’s so solid in uh run blocking and he’s just almost money every time he’s targeted in the red zone So yeah I mean he’ll he’ll be successful no matter where he goes

Vince:

00:25:34.39 – 00:25:42.88

And that’s kind of how I feel about J R Brown to like you saw I saw him he was drank like 250 something on this website I’m like

Vince:

00:25:43.4 – 00:26:00.2

he’s just as good if not maybe better than Jaquan brisker I think that’s fair to argue and drafted mid second round So I don’t understand how he’s not in that top 100 area range So you know definitely really surprising

Andrew:

00:26:00.21 – 00:26:07.03

right Yeah I was actually kind of surprised about that too just given some of the versatility that he has I think maybe like I think

Andrew:

00:26:07.21 – 00:26:24.52

um Jaquan might have benefited maybe from more of that like prototypical like size that teams were looking for at safety because I feel like there might be a little undersized uh for what teams are looking for safety I don’t really know but

Andrew:

00:26:24.77 – 00:26:54.51

um just one possible reason that I can think of But yeah I mean he’s he’s gonna be another guy too I mean I could see him Um kind of becoming quickly like a nick scott where he’s like he’s drafted he kind of spends some time in his first season at special teams but then works his way into a starting role because the guy is just a tremendous football player Um you know above all else he’s just smart He has a nose for the ball he knows where he needs to be and he makes the most impact no matter where he is on the field

Vince:

00:26:55.18 – 00:27:11.33

Yeah really incredible player And it’ll be exciting to watch him at the next level And speaking of guys that we might lose to the draft do you want to move on and talk about some of these recruits that we had on Penn State’s draft signing day

Andrew:

00:27:11.34 – 00:27:21.45

Yeah let’s do that And then we can move on to some of our our you know larger favorite players and moments and things from all the time So we could use that as a segue

Vince:

00:27:21.88 – 00:27:47.09

Sounds good So we talked about how we’re losing some guys along the offensive line We’re losing do Scruggs uh might potentially lose kate and Wallace but it looks like there’s some reinforcements coming We have five star offensive tackle Devin Williams out of wyomissing high school and writing Pennsylvania and we got four star interior offensive lineman Alex birch meyer from Virginia

Vince:

00:27:47.49 – 00:27:52.88

Andrew Do you do you think these guys can fill those roles for Penn State one

Andrew:

00:27:52.88 – 00:28:02.46

100% I can really see these guys coming in and having almost a drew shelton like impact right away Um you know I think that

Andrew:

00:28:02.75 – 00:28:32.45

uh signing Evan Williams was probably the top priority for the Penn State staff going into the late recruiting period just because there are so many instances of guys flipping schools and stuff like that So they probably stayed on his recruitment um very heavily right up until the very end because they needed him Um you know that that five star tackle talent coming in is very rare especially you know with one being in Pennsylvania Um they love to

Andrew:

00:28:32.67 – 00:28:59.13

uh say the motto the best in P A Stay in P A So they wanted to make sure that that rang true and got him to state College you know I could see him being somebody who does get some playing time fairly early on Um It’ll be interesting to see how they organized the offensive line going into next season since we do have old fashioned coming back So maybe they’ll be moving some guys around to fill the center spot from one of the guard positions kind of hard to say at this point but

Andrew:

00:28:59.3 – 00:29:10.85

you know these are the kind of quality players that they could have gone anywhere So the fact that they’re coming to state college is a huge deal and I think they’re going to have an impact almost immediately

Vince:

00:29:11.58 – 00:29:37.73

Yeah and this was definitely a group that you know the quantity wasn’t high but these are the top two rated players on their board Like they’re really incredible You think they can be plug and play starters potentially Um you know throughout the season you also I heard that juice Scruggs thought hunter nor sad might actually move over to center so you might see him at center and maybe bert meyer at guard and

Vince:

00:29:37.85 – 00:29:49.17

devon Williams manning the right hand side and then you could have maybe landed tangle coming back from injury manning the other side So that’s a pretty solid Uh top five when you look at it

Andrew:

00:29:49.18 – 00:29:50.42

 Yeah absolutely

Vince:

00:29:51.04 – 00:29:55.38

Yeah What are some other groups do you think we should go over with the recruiting class We got coming in

Andrew:

00:29:55.39 – 00:30:11.29

Well I think another big splash that they made was in the tight end group I’ve seen a lot of buzz coming out about Andrew rapidly and the other tight ends that they brought in with this upcoming class Uh please forgive me if I

Vince:

00:30:11.3 – 00:30:18.91

got the list So we got joe schaeffler out of Exeter township which is uh near writing pia as well And we also have

Vince:

00:30:19.09 – 00:30:23.71

mega Barnwell out of Virginia So like Megatron

Andrew:

00:30:23.72 – 00:30:24.81

 you got three

Vince:

00:30:24.81 – 00:30:40.7

four star tight ends coming in after losing Brenton Strange So it’s kind of crazy that you know you don’t want to lose a guy like that who is so good But man 34 stars at a position where you would think that theo is theo and uh

Vince:

00:30:40.99 – 00:30:45.99

Tyler Warren both come back Like man that is a really competitive room to see the field

Andrew:

00:30:46.0 – 00:31:00.23

Yes it is And uh you know that’s exactly the place that Penn State wants to be like it’s um uh this prototypical reloading at a position This is what the top programs do Um and so yeah it kind of stinks that the comp it

Andrew:

00:31:00.24 – 00:31:19.49

the level is so high to see the field and stuff like that But I think that’s just the kind of culture that franklin and Crew want to cultivate You know just uh you know you’re gonna earn your spot but you’re gonna come into an incredible program that’s gonna help you develop both as a football player and as a person and stuff like that So you know don’t be afraid of the competition So I’m I’m kind of glad that they’re in this position

Vince:

00:31:20.0 – 00:31:39.32

Yeah me too And that’s great And this is the same thing applies to the running back group We got up only staying with the program so far You got nick and Katrina coming back and we also got four star running back in London Montgomery out of Scranton prep along with the Cameron Wallace out of Georgia Another three star guy

Andrew:

00:31:39.99 – 00:31:55.13

Yeah that I think that’s huge Especially after they did see some turnover at the running back spot with uh with cozy homes leaving the program and devin ford switching his focus is more to the academic side of things I think they you know they really wanted to

Andrew:

00:31:55.31 – 00:32:19.18

land a couple of running backs in this upcoming class just to make sure that the room is filled Um you know I think that the relative lack of experience in the room overall once things take shape for 2023 you know the fact that you’re gonna have like two true sophomores um uh true junior and and two true freshmen like that doesn’t really scare the coaching staff very much because

Andrew:

00:32:19.41 – 00:32:38.1

clearly they’re not afraid to put the freshman out there for these meaningful snaps as long as they know they can produce and they’re going to take care of the football and things like that So um I think just having a full group again is gonna be really important But also the fact that they’re extremely talented guys is obviously a huge plus as well

Vince:

00:32:38.11 – 00:32:48.77

And uh I think the lockdown you has a really good chance to continue as well We’re talking about how much it’s going to hurt to lose hair brown and we have 34 star safety safety’s coming in

Vince:

00:32:49.13 – 00:33:07.98

and they’re all coming from the south We got king Mack from florida We got Elliot Washington from florida as well as uh Zachary nelson from Alabama and he didn’t go to Alabama or Auburn an sec school He decided to come up here Uh how big of a deal is that for Penn State and their secondary

Andrew:

00:33:07.99 – 00:33:15.74

Um you want to have a fresh rotation of those dbs especially with the kind of system that Penn State has implemented this this past season

Andrew:

00:33:15.98 – 00:33:27.97

Um you know so I think that the way that Penn State likes to use their safeties um like the fact that they’re gonna have so many of these guys to kind of plug and play depending on the situation is really cool and I think that

Andrew:

00:33:28.2 – 00:33:48.13

um Jr Brown being the all star that he is might have had a nice impact on some of these guys deciding to come to Penn State So certainly glad to have the services from that aspect as well Um so you know I think the fact that Penn State is uh again like reloading at a particular position group is uh can’t be overstated

Vince:

00:33:48.56 – 00:34:13.32

you know moving moving to the cornerback spot here Uh you know we got four star corners ion Tracy out of Connecticut we got three star corner Lamont pain out of Chartres Chartres Valley another p a guy And we also got a nice little christmas gift and the transport portal from Storm Duck coming over from U N C Andrew What kind of impact is that going to have on Penn State secondary

Andrew:

00:34:13.33 – 00:34:15.56

just from the name alone huge

Andrew:

00:34:16.48 – 00:34:42.23

You know with with a name like Storm Duck you can expect big things but on an actual real sense he’s I think he’s going to be somebody who is going to have an immediate strong impact Kind of like a johnnie Dixon type of player He was a second team all sec selection Um You know a guy who has seen plenty of football he’s played against the likes of um

Andrew:

00:34:42.35 – 00:34:56.08

you know Notre dame Clemson and so he’s seen some really high level college football I mean even U N C Wasn’t really a slouch um in their own right But you know he’s he’s played in big games so I think he’s going to be an excellent addition

Vince:

00:34:56.09 – 00:35:09.26

Yeah that’s great And uh we almost have an embarrassment of riches at the linebacker position Jonathan Sutherland is the only one that we know is leaving for sure so far since he’s run out of eligibility

Vince:

00:35:09.46 – 00:35:23.6

and backing up Dominic Deluca Abdul carter and Curtis Jacobs You have four star linebackers Tony rojas out of Virginia You have k bianchi’s out of Virginia and we have

Vince:

00:35:24.18 – 00:35:49.15

trying to find the last ones Might have been one of those guys Might have been an edge meal Lions here And is that is he the third Okay so he was rated as an edge on rival That’s why I’m like wait I’m going crazy I’m not crazy I knew there were three So this linebacker court is going to be stacked Do you think any of those guys are going to get Jonathan Sutherland’s number zero

Andrew:

00:35:49.93 – 00:35:57.51

it might take him a couple of years because I think there’s uh I mean there’s probably gonna be somebody on the team right now who is uh

Andrew:

00:35:58.07 – 00:36:12.16

I’m gonna take that take that spot And I think it goes doesn’t the zero go to the person on special teams who has like the most impact or something And he just happened to have the number when he was moved from primarily special teams to linebacker

Vince:

00:36:12.17 – 00:36:22.27

Yeah I do think that that’s it’s someone like so since the zero became a new number you could wear by the N C Double A Rules I think they wanted to honor someone

Vince:

00:36:22.67 – 00:36:49.2

who was like tough and examples like the values of Penn State and I think Jonathan Sutherland with his like leadership and unselfishness and work ethic I think it’s kind of revolved around that So I do think Dominic Deluca is a great candidate to earn that since he’s a big time special teams player And uh he’s he worked back from coming from injuries from high school and took like a gray shirt year So I think he he’d be a good candidate for that number

Andrew:

00:36:49.62 – 00:37:06.56

Yeah actually you know what when you put it that way I think he would be kind of the perfect selection So um you know I think uh let’s say dominant gets it this upcoming season and then who knows maybe one of those young linebackers will be stepping up in a big way to earn it a couple of years down the down the road

Vince:

00:37:06.57 – 00:37:10.93

Yeah And uh we talked a lot about how this defense likes to eat

Vince:

00:37:11.34 – 00:37:23.9

well they’re going to be on some more guys Uh we got four star edge Tamir Robinson he’s from Pittsburgh P A So Pat Narduzzi was not able to keep him there Uh We have

Vince:

00:37:24.49 – 00:37:40.37

we also got a three star edge joseph and I we also have Mason Robinson on Maryland another three star guy And then we got three star defensive lineman Tyreek blanding from new york So it looks like we got a lot of depth to add to uh

Vince:

00:37:40.98 – 00:37:42.36

 really good pass rush

Andrew:

00:37:42.37 – 00:37:59.09

And uh I think that’s you know just exactly again where Penn State wants to be just with you know how confident they feel in the starting uh front seven and you know the fact that they’re gonna have chopped they’re gonna have a diese they’re gonna have uh

Andrew:

00:37:59.64 – 00:38:16.46

uh because I Izard and Von Ellie’s at the tackle spots and stuff like that like having fresh bodies Um especially uh some of these rangy guys kind of fitting like uh fitting like a denied Dennis Sutton type of profile at the edge like that would be huge for Penn State

Vince:

00:38:17.25 – 00:38:45.85

Yeah we have an embarrassment of riches at the defensive end position However I do think I would like to see a little bit more depth in the interior defensive line because you’re losing losing PJ must for to graduation and nick harbor has already declared for the NFL draft So I would like to see maybe a guy like a last duty trying to get him from texas A and M In the portal I think that would be a big steel if they can get a guy of that quality

Vince:

00:38:46.05 – 00:38:52.23

and you know maybe maybe another recruit here and there to help bolster the depth of that defensive line

Andrew:

00:38:52.36 – 00:39:00.63

And uh you know James franklin has said that they’re still very active in the portal So who knows what’s gonna come down the pipeline here real soon Yeah

Vince:

00:39:00.63 – 00:39:09.87

I do think they are going to target the portal a little bit more than in the past because we are kind of our program is in win now mode If you want to put it that way

Vince:

00:39:10.03 – 00:39:19.03

we’re in a rush to win now because of the athletes that we have because we’ve hit on a lot and we just need to hit on a few more to get get over the top there

Andrew:

00:39:19.04 – 00:39:23.69

Yeah exactly Especially with Drew our at the helm next season

Vince:

00:39:23.7 – 00:39:31.88

Yeah If you have a guy like Drew our like they say finding a quarterback is probably the hardest position to find in all sports

Vince:

00:39:32.17 – 00:39:52.42

So if you got that right surround surround them with everything and they even say that in the NFL when when your quarterback is cheap on that rookie contract surround them with as much as possible because that window is not very long and no different reasons you know because in college football you only get four years of playing time but kind of similar concept

Andrew:

00:39:52.43 – 00:39:56.69

Yeah exactly Like realistically right now we have two years

Andrew:

00:39:57.04 – 00:39:58.88

Yeah We gotta make it happen

Vince:

00:39:58.89 – 00:40:01.69

 two years 3 four if

Andrew:

00:40:02.2 – 00:40:03.07

 special

Vince:

00:40:03.08 – 00:40:09.87

Yeah If if growler is belong to like turn down millions of dollars So you’re probably looking at two years

Vince:

00:40:10.11 – 00:40:38.94

you know he’s gonna need some help on weapons from the outside We have parker Washington declaring for the draft We’re losing Mitchell Tinsley to graduation and this is probably one of the positions where I’m more concerned but we did get a commitment from four star carmelo taylor from Virginia and Virginia seems to be the new hot spot state for Penn State You know they’re really crushing it there and uh hopefully we can get some of those wide receivers that we were talking about last episode in the portal

Andrew:

00:40:39.42 – 00:40:55.87

Yeah You know I’ll be honest like I’m not as worried just because I you know I know that the guys that they have on the squad now in the likes of like a mari Evans and uh and Trey Wallace and

Andrew:

00:40:56.21 – 00:41:12.93

and some other key names in there Like they haven’t seen as much playing time as parker Washington but I I have a bit of confidence in them Um you know I still think that Penn State is going to do everything they can to get a guy like Dante Cephas out of Kent state to state college to kind of be that

Andrew:

00:41:13.1 – 00:41:40.83

um automatic number one option But I do like you know some of the talent that Penn State is coming back even with keandre Lambert smith who is also from Virginia Um so just you know tied back to Virginia there But I do like the group that they have coming back even though they’re not as experience I think that they are in limited moments showing that they’re they’re capable of moving the ball But I do agree with you that you know they should do everything they can to get experienced pass catchers in there

Vince:

00:41:41.18 – 00:42:07.31

Yeah And if memory serves me correctly I think KJ Hamler announced his draft pick and said he reminds him of himself So you know just having that raw track speed and I was like okay he better be fast because when I saw I think he was like 5 11 and 100 60 £165 I’m like this guy’s like my size he better be fast if he’s playing one football So

Vince:

00:42:07.44 – 00:42:10.29

 right so

Andrew:

00:42:10.29 – 00:42:34.03

maybe maybe he’ll have a KJ Hamler like freshman moment like in 2018 was Yeah I think it was it was 18 when Hamler uh he was coming off of an injury So I think it was like a redshirt freshman at the time But he right he rattled off a 90 plus yard touchdown catch begins

Andrew:

00:42:34.04 – 00:43:02.01

Ohio State um I mean I just remember going nuts in my living room when that happened because he just took the ball and just bolted So maybe we’ll see some moments like that You know I could see a guy like him um you know just really shifty speedy just pure speed type of guy really excelling Um even in like the slot So we’ll see where Penn State likes to use some of these guys because they do have some options at the outside Even in like trey Wallace I could see you know being

Andrew:

00:43:02.17 – 00:43:13.22

um I forget what the you know the initials that they use for these guys but you know definitely one of the outside options and hopefully they’re gonna get a name or two coming in from the transfer portal as well

Vince:

00:43:13.23 – 00:43:21.02

Yeah Harrison Wallace and Mari Evans are both fast good players But you know to have a guy like KJ Hamler and

Vince:

00:43:21.18 – 00:43:34.35

let’s face it punt team was something we didn’t really get a lot from this season So to have a guy like him returning punts and uh potentially Kickoffs to give uh nick’s singleton a little bit of rest and

Vince:

00:43:34.52 – 00:43:59.54

no so he’s not getting hit quite as hard and can keep him a little healthier You know that would be a huge impact Uh you know for the team our last recruit we got in this giant top 15 science class was a three star quarterback Jackson small out of Iowa so I got a little bit of depth there and uh man he must have been really desperate to not be quarterback for the Hawkeyes He must have said I gotta get out of the state they don’t play offense here

Andrew:

00:43:59.54 – 00:44:00.45

 So

Vince:

00:44:00.76 – 00:44:02.15

 yeah the right choice

Andrew:

00:44:02.93 – 00:44:24.45

Right Yeah And you know this uh this guy that um the coaches were pretty high on um James franklin went so far as to call him quote unquote the steel of the recruitment period So I think um it’s uh somebody that they have a lot of confidence in coming out of high school um seems to be a guy who

Andrew:

00:44:24.6 – 00:44:47.21

uh really kind of rose up you know we’re not gonna call it a draft board but you know kind of the recruiting rankings as they were um in his final season of high school football kind of a you know a guy who didn’t have like a ton of offers but you know had a lot of production Um ended up going to the elite 11 camp for high school quarterbacks which is kind of seen as like the de facto

Andrew:

00:44:47.56 – 00:45:12.41

camp of like who’s who for incoming college quarterbacks you know Yeah you have guys like uh like Sean Clifford went to that christian Hackenberg went to that christian there went to that obviously Drew our went to that I’m not sure if beau Fibula also went to that but you know a number of Penn State quarterbacks went to the elite 11 camp and this guy is uh you know another one in that group

Andrew:

00:45:12.56 – 00:45:24.75

Um he was able to parlay a camp visit to Penn State to a Penn State offer Um so you know he’s a guy who really kind of seems to have bet on himself a lot and uh

Andrew:

00:45:24.94 – 00:45:41.55

he’s you know kind of transform that into his next step at Happy Valley So I think um you know he’s a guy that Penn State fans should be excited to have um adds some really nice young talented depth to a quarterback room that is gonna be a little bit

Vince:

00:45:41.55 – 00:45:43.03

 left right

Andrew:

00:45:43.04 – 00:45:46.04

And so I think he’s uh he’s going to be a welcome addition

Vince:

00:45:46.66 – 00:46:00.31

Yeah that’s great stuff And I definitely love guys who bet on themselves because you know they’re just putting the accountability on them So you know those are guys that are gonna you know put the work and be focused they’re not gonna be goofing around and they’re gonna be ready to execute at a high

Andrew:

00:46:00.31 – 00:46:02.02

 level Yeah

Vince:

00:46:02.03 – 00:46:10.66

So I think we covered all the draft stuff Do you want to circle back and talk about some of our favorite Penn State memories

Andrew:

00:46:11.19 – 00:46:19.2

Yeah let’s do it Why don’t you kick us off So um I think let’s talk about your favorite

Andrew:

00:46:19.75 – 00:46:34.41

game of all time So let’s change up the order So we’ll go like game player and then moment because there might be some overlap but you know I think uh we we might differ in a couple of spots So hit me with your your favorite game of all time

Vince:

00:46:34.42 – 00:46:38.07

So I don’t think we are going to differ on this one I

Andrew:

00:46:38.07 – 00:46:38.77

 think

Vince:

00:46:39.3 – 00:47:01.97

Yogurt with me the uh the block six spoiler alert that’s my my play to block six and the Ohio State wide out in 2016 year we won the Big 10 championship that was like one of the best years of my life ever So you know just seeing that incredible play and and winning that fashion knock knocking down Ohio State

Vince:

00:47:02.34 – 00:47:17.48

that’s the last time we beat them even So you know they’ve always been kind of the monkey on our back and we just can’t seem to shake off and finally do that and like storming the field Like that was the best feeling ever to knock off the buckeyes Are you in agreement with me

Andrew:

00:47:17.49 – 00:47:31.73

Uh so it might surprise you but I am not in agreement with you here Um that was I mean obviously that game was extremely high up on my list Um you know it just it was like the memory of a lifetime

Andrew:

00:47:31.9 – 00:47:49.4

But the game that I have in my mind from beginning to end Um as far as it being like my favorite game of all time is the quadruple overtime thriller against michigan and I call that one out because you know there there was there was a lot of things that

Andrew:

00:47:49.84 – 00:48:10.08

went into that game that just made it just so insanely memorable Uh you know the first being that Michigan was a heavy favorite they were coming in as a team ranked in the mid teams Penn State was unranked Um it was a late afternoon whiteout environment so it was like kind of dusk at the time that they played and

Andrew:

00:48:10.2 – 00:48:22.35

you know Penn State and Michigan were trading blows back and forth and it was kind of unclear who was going to come out on top Penn State was hanging tough christian Hackenberg being a freshman um was making some nice plays and

Andrew:

00:48:22.57 – 00:48:35.69

And uh that final drive in regulation with Hackenberg having 52 seconds no timeouts um with a couple of just absolute miracle throws to Allen Robinson will

Vince:

00:48:36.22 – 00:48:44.04

catch where he just he actually got the tattoo that tattoo on him like the michigan guy was on his body is like you get me off your body

Andrew:

00:48:44.44 – 00:48:59.58

right And you know what’s kind of crazy too is that you know people remember that one so much because of how insane it was but he also had another insane grab on that very same drive where he caught the ball and it was like three ft out of

Andrew:

00:48:59.59 – 00:49:23.4

bounds when he caught it but he had the one leg that was still in bounds to technically catch the ball like that to me was almost just as impressive and it’s a it’s a catch that only Allen Robinson like he was the only guy on the field who could have made that catch at that time Um and then of course you know a couple of days later he had the bomb from Hackenberg and then hack was able to sneak it in tie it up going over time and

Andrew:

00:49:23.55 – 00:49:32.72

I mean just talk about like a roller coaster of emotions in overtime because you know we were trading kicks and um I mean like that was

Vince:

00:49:33.75 – 00:49:36.57

 like right and

Andrew:

00:49:36.57 – 00:49:45.02

not only that right and not only that um but Penn State I think maybe it was like in second overtime or whatever it was

Andrew:

00:49:45.22 – 00:50:14.35

Penn State had the ball first they did reverse to Allen Robinson who couldn’t hang onto the ball he fumbled So the ball went back to michigan and you know all of us in the student section were just like oh my God like this is it this is how this is gonna end because like they’re just gonna kick the field like this is gonna be it And then finally um or and then you know in that moment I mean I just I’ve never made more noise in my entire life than that moment um when the kick

Andrew:

00:50:14.65 – 00:50:44.33

I was getting set up because I mean just like a sea of just buzzing people in the student section just always making as much movement as possible and of course he missed the kick and the whole place went nuts and then they traded kicks back and forth and third overtime and then um Bill O’brien being the absolute baller that he was decided to go for it on fourth and one um in fourth overtime ended up getting it and then through I forget who the target was but got pass interference and in the end zone moved the ball like to the two

Andrew:

00:50:44.34 – 00:51:13.72

two and then Bill Bowden bounced into the outside to win it Like I’ve just you know I’ve never been a part of something that was just that chaotic that like up and down and stuff like that So obviously the white out game against Ohio State is like something that’s going to exist in Penn State lore forever because of you know just with it being with Trace and Sae kwon and just this amazing team that made a big 10 championship run and stuff like that But for me personally I think it comes just a slight second to the michigan game for me so

Andrew:

00:51:13.86 – 00:51:17.96

hope I didn’t throw you for too much of a loop But that’s that’s where I’m at

Vince:

00:51:17.97 – 00:51:26.52

So this this hurts my soul a little bit because I think I might have actually missed out on a rare opportunity to go to this

Andrew:

00:51:26.52 – 00:51:27.39

 game

Vince:

00:51:27.4 – 00:51:41.32

So one of my teammates at Lock Haven was like a really big like Diehard Penn State fan like he was my roommate for a year he’d be playing like you know the blue band He had like the blue band cd of all their songs and he’d be playing it like

Vince:

00:51:41.52 – 00:52:09.6

on Saturdays and stuff And I think I had an opportunity that year I think he was trying to find some people to like work and like he was in sport administration So I think he was like we were supposed to like hand out a bunch of flyers and stuff We would have had to work for like two or three hours like you know put flyers on people’s car and stuff like that But there’s actually footage of my uh my roommate he’s actually down on the field in the end zone and I guess he was working the event

Vince:

00:52:09.93 – 00:52:19.77

uh you know for something in the sport of men program at Lockheed and and he’s there like jumping up and down like on the like in the end zone like in the fourth overtime when they won and he’s just going crazy

Andrew:

00:52:19.77 – 00:52:20.74

 And I

Vince:

00:52:20.75 – 00:52:35.75

remember watching that entire game on tv uh you know I I didn’t go like I don’t want to work and I think it was close to like our championship season and cross country so I was like okay I want to be like rested and not goofing around and take care care of my business

Vince:

00:52:36.1 – 00:52:50.3

you know you know on the cross country course but just watching that game on tv It was insane And I remember screaming at the tv jumping up and down and definitely regretting not taking that opportunity if I would have been able to actually go in the game and watch

Andrew:

00:52:50.31 – 00:52:58.66

Yeah hindsight is always tough but you know it’s like leading up to the game it didn’t look like it was gonna be anything near what it turned out to be because

Andrew:

00:52:58.82 – 00:53:16.85

you know Michigan was a really good team at that point Um but you know Penn State just just hung tough Um and you know that was honestly like that was the game where I foolishly convinced myself I’m like oh man like christian Hackenberg like he’s it man like this this is the kid he’s like and

Andrew:

00:53:17.02 – 00:53:35.93

you know unfortunately Penn State wasn’t able to protect him from that season onwards and we all saw how that turned out I still think that he was done dirty behind the lack of protection on the offensive line but you know the circumstances were what they were But yeah I mean like I I still have I have the daily collegian article uh from that game

Andrew:

00:53:36.09 – 00:53:49.7

Um or that that newspaper hanging down in my basement along with the 2016 White Out Game but I still have my ticket stub from that game um with that newspaper So it’s just you know it’s just one of those things that I’ll remember forever

Vince:

00:53:50.52 – 00:53:57.27

Oh absolutely And you know especially if you’re there in person like I can’t imagine how good of an experience that would have been

Andrew:

00:53:57.28 – 00:54:16.67

Yeah I mean there there’s been a couple like there’s two moments that stick out in my mind um from the student section Like just trying to be a like a viable factor in a game Like that was one because I mean we’re just all screaming to the point of losing our voices Like we were just trying to be as disruptive as possible

Andrew:

00:54:16.93 – 00:54:41.56

The other moment that sticks out in my mind was our freshman year when we played Illinois And that turned out to be joe paterno’s final game as head coach of the Lions Um and it was like it was a miserable game Like it was like nothing was happening Um it was snowing in late october like we got like six inches of snow so it was like freezing it was cold it was wet

Andrew:

00:54:41.88 – 00:55:11.1

and you know like Penn State wasn’t doing anything And like late in the game Penn State got uh got a touchdown and so they needed to have one defensive stop to win the game They were up 10 6 at this point and Illinois was you know moving down the field and they were getting into field goal position I think to go into overtime in that game So maybe maybe Penn State was like yeah I think I think I think it might have been like 10 7

Andrew:

00:55:11.57 – 00:55:12.11

 um

Vince:

00:55:12.65 – 00:55:13.12

 right

Andrew:

00:55:13.13 – 00:55:23.32

right And so they were getting into field goal position to potentially go into overtime and at this point because the conditions were so miserable A lot of the student section had actually uh

Andrew:

00:55:23.55 – 00:55:49.57

left by that point because again like just nothing was happening And so they were gearing up um Penn State called a time out and then all I heard was somebody in the student section yell go to the middle and just like without even like thinking like we were just some freaking hive mind we all just sprinted to the middle of the student section just to create as like as visible a mass as possible

Andrew:

00:55:49.75 – 00:56:18.98

And like immediately just lost our minds like we were just like screaming our heads off like through the rest of the time out and like as they were like setting up to like get that kick and then of course like when you know the kicker missed that And I mean that was just that was just so cool to be a part of like just like just this mass of people trying to impact the outcome of a game And um my dad actually has a pretty cool quote from that moment because my mom and dad ended up going to that game and

Andrew:

00:56:19.14 – 00:56:26.8

you know they were across the stadium or they were in a different part of the stadium at this point and he says it just looked like you know just like bees like just

Vince:

00:56:26.8 – 00:56:28.16

 like just

Andrew:

00:56:28.17 – 00:56:35.06

coming together um just to create this uh just this wall of humanity So

Vince:

00:56:35.07 – 00:56:35.86

 yeah

Andrew:

00:56:35.87 – 00:56:41.67

along with like the Michigan game that’s the other one that sticks out in my mind So kind of going down memory lane here a little bit

Vince:

00:56:42.04 – 00:56:53.01

Okay so between your four overtime when over michigan and my win over number two Ohio State which do you think was the bigger upset

Andrew:

00:56:53.02 – 00:57:09.64

Oh definitely Ohio state I mean without a doubt like we were a 24 point underdog in that one I mean like even I think we thought that the chances of Penn State would win we’re just astronomically small Um yeah I mean like Michigan was good but they were Ohio state in 2016 Good

Vince:

00:57:10.7 – 00:57:28.76

Yeah so that was my biggest thing Like a lot a lot of times when I go to games I remember like if we’re an underdog especially I remember those wins um over others So like if I have to rank them I’ll rank them based off of you know the underdog merit How much of an underdog are you

Andrew:

00:57:29.36 – 00:57:44.18

So we’ve talked a lot about our favorite games So why don’t you hit me with your favorite player of all time Who is the Nittany Lion that stands out in your mind the most uh in your mind into your heart as kind of being your favorite to wear the blue and white

Vince:

00:57:44.69 – 00:57:49.63

my favorite player to ever wear the blue and white you shouldn’t have gave me this one first

Andrew:

00:57:49.64 – 00:57:54.52

uh because I think we’re I think we’re gonna differ on this one to hit me with it

Vince:

00:57:54.53 – 00:58:11.21

has to be Se kwon Barkley just the amount of incredible plays not only like all the hurtling human beings the breakaway touchdowns kick returns even you know the big play against Iowa where he made that incredible block So Juwan johnson

Vince:

00:58:11.39 – 00:58:24.14

Could catch that touchdown at Iowa and clinic in the 2017 season It has to be safe on Barkley He he did everything brought this team his first big 10 championship in a very long time So

Vince:

00:58:24.53 – 00:58:30.76

Has to be saved one You never seen a physical specimen and he’s a track guy So Gotta love that too

Andrew:

00:58:30.77 – 00:58:42.76

Right right Yeah absolutely worthy um like winner I guess as your favorite player or just absolutely worthy guy to be anybody’s favorite player from Penn State

Andrew:

00:58:42.91 – 00:58:51.13

However my favorite player is Michael Robinson the former quarterback of the Nittany Lions who was with the program

Vince:

00:58:51.19 – 00:58:52.27

 Yeah

Andrew:

00:58:52.28 – 00:59:07.91

exactly And uh so he you know the and the reason why he’s my favorite was because he was around you know right around the time that like my Penn State fandom um like kind of really solidified in my mind because you know you remember back to the days when you were like

Andrew:

00:59:07.92 – 00:59:32.93

you know you knew about Penn State you cared about Penn State and but you know you weren’t like as into the team or the program or the results as you are like now you know because now we ride or die with the team But Michael Robinson for me was right on the cusp of when I was like really starting to invest myself in the team and that 2005 run to the Orange Bowl is I’ll never forget it And

Andrew:

00:59:33.06 – 00:59:59.8

you know it’s it stings even to this day that they were one play away from potentially playing for national championship if it weren’t for the darn michigan wolverines scoring in the very last second of the game Uh to give Penn State ultimately an 11 and one record in the regular season Um they did get a share of the Big 10 championship that year Um I forget I I think it was because the national championship was going to be played

Andrew:

01:00:00.0 – 01:00:28.47

in Pasadena which is why Penn State didn’t go to the Rose Bowl that year But they did play they did play florida State um in the Orange Bowl that year Also a crazy game went into three overtimes Uh probably shouldn’t have been as close as it was because florida state was ranked like 21 at the time That Penn State was number three But you know regardless Penn State ended up being a BCS bowl champion in that one So Michael Robinson um I still have a number 12 jersey that my aunt got me

Andrew:

01:00:28.6 – 01:00:36.44

um after that season wrapped up So Michael Robinson is the guy who will forever stick in my mind is my favorite player Yeah

Vince:

01:00:36.45 – 01:00:48.5

And I think I got I got into Penn State maybe a few few years later than you were like I was dedicated to watching it every single week because my family was more of like a basketball family than a football family So

Vince:

01:00:48.63 – 01:01:14.26

And that was the sport We watched like a lot of North Carolina and Duke basketball games Um but like I would say like around when Darryl Clark was there probably around like 2007 that’s my first start again into like watching it every single Saturday or every single week So I do think since you have a little bit I like I don’t remember watching Michael Robinson So I think I just got to the party a little bit later than you did

Andrew:

01:01:14.59 – 01:01:26.59

Which I mean there’s there’s no timeline there’s there’s no correct answer there But yeah I just I just remember like loving watching him play because he was like a guy who like did a little bit of everything He played some wide receiver he played a little bit of running back and then

Vince:

01:01:26.6 – 01:01:30.56

he was like he was like a quarterback but then he played like fullback in the NFL Right

Andrew:

01:01:30.56 – 01:01:31.78

 right Yeah

Vince:

01:01:31.79 – 01:01:36.9

A lot of different things I think that would be really exciting You know wide receiver running back quarterback like doing it all

Andrew:

01:01:36.91 – 01:01:42.7

Yeah yeah He was a guy who like you know just came in and just did everything that the team asked him to do and uh

Andrew:

01:01:42.85 – 01:02:04.59

yeah I mean they just had something really special in that 2005 season and Derrick Williams was a freshman at that point Um they had uh you know a couple of um you know really talented running backs at that point and obviously you know linebacker you was alive and well I think that uh like Sean lee was still with the team at that point I don’t know if uh

Andrew:

01:02:04.86 – 01:02:30.24

if paul Posluszny was still there at that point or not but you know typical like you know hard nosed Penn State defense and stuff like that So that team will just always hold a special place in my heart But nonetheless uh let’s move on now to our favorite moment So I think this is probably where we’re going to finally find alignment here vince but tell me what your favorite Penn State football moment of all time is

Vince:

01:02:31.17 – 01:02:36.88

Has to be the block six I know it has to be yours too because you have a picture of the play in your house

Andrew:

01:02:36.89 – 01:02:41.59

Yeah exactly Yeah I mean like how could it not be Like

Vince:

01:02:41.6 – 01:02:59.3

I remember the thing is I remember so many moments from that game like you know I remember the white out and there was this guy there and like a green winter jacket his name is also vince I remember uh yeah we’re all just kind of grumpy because Pence day was kind of falling behind and

Vince:

01:02:59.73 – 01:03:28.75

you know and then you know Ohio State was lining up there kicking a routine kick and I just remember it was it was Marcus Allen actually blocked in The grand grand Hanley picked it up and Grant Haley is running and I just like I see the Ohio State by closing on it somehow I’m like how is our safety getting caught And I just remember screaming run run run like I didn’t think he was gonna make it he gets tackled and just falls into the end zone

Vince:

01:03:28.94 – 01:03:50.58

and that was so important because the offense was struggling So I was like we need to get in to win this game And then at that point in the game I think there were just under 4.5 minutes left or 6.5 minutes somewhere around there and I just knew like okay that play was it like we’re gonna f and win this game So

Andrew:

01:03:50.88 – 01:04:15.56

Yeah certainly Yeah you know I I would agree with you like that like just the moment the impact that it had and the legacy that it’s gonna leave behind like it’s going to take something really really special to top it and you know there’s a lot of things to that I also remember from that game like that was the first game that I can remember where they played Zombie Nation

Andrew:

01:04:15.81 – 01:04:38.02

like as the team was coming out because normally they have the band uh like play them out of the tunnel and stuff like that And I just remember the chills that I got from like the video that they played up on the big screen and how they played the song as the team was coming out so the crowd was going nuts and then they like released the fireworks and stuff like that Like

Andrew:

01:04:38.2 – 01:04:55.91

it just it just had the makings of a special night and it really truly was and I’ll never I’ll never forget our friend Vince I’m not going to use the exact language but as we sacked um as we sacked Gosh jt or

Vince:

01:04:57.07 – 01:04:57.45

 yeah

Andrew:

01:04:57.46 – 01:05:04.93

J T Barrett at the time like we sacked him for the last time to ice the game and he gives us both a hug He turns around he’s just like we did

Vince:

01:05:04.93 – 01:05:05.38

 it

Vince:

01:05:05.87 – 01:05:17.51

Oh I remember that That was that was so incredible I remember when we took the lead or something and I came he was screaming like over and over like it was so fun like

Andrew:

01:05:17.53 – 01:05:19.37

 character but he definitely

Vince:

01:05:19.37 – 01:05:21.66

was definitely gave us some good laughs

Andrew:

01:05:21.67 – 01:05:25.12

But yeah so I think we

Andrew:

01:05:25.14 – 01:05:32.09

can very easily say that that is it I think that might be our favorite moment forever

Vince:

01:05:32.1 – 01:05:44.4

Yeah like how can you forget a guy who wears like a like it was almost like a kelly green winter jacket to like a white out I was like dude what are you doing You’re wearing like a break green jacket

Vince:

01:05:45.2 – 01:05:47.23

 game And

Andrew:

01:05:47.23 – 01:06:02.78

Even and on top of that two we we even got our picture taken unbeknownst to us that got shown on the big 10 network uh the two games after that So you know we’re standing up kind of rocking back and forth the sweet Caroline and

Andrew:

01:06:02.95 – 01:06:05.2

somebody out there snapped a photo

We haven’t actually it’s on facebook So my friend took like a picture of us on the T V So

Andrew:

01:06:11.14 – 01:06:19.05

Yeah I have a picture of that too I just wish I had the actual picture like if like I wish I could contact the big 10 network and be like hey so

Andrew:

01:06:19.24 – 01:06:26.41

In 2016 my friend and I got her picture taken at this one Penn State game and we’re just kind of wondering can we have it

Vince:

01:06:26.42 – 01:06:29.52

Dude it was it was such like a badass photo though like

Andrew:

01:06:29.53 – 01:06:30.52

 you were just

Vince:

01:06:30.52 – 01:06:34.26

like smiling and so happy and I was just I was still kind of in like

Vince:

01:06:34.27 – 01:06:39.31

the zone mode I just like put like the finger up like like number one like

Andrew:

01:06:39.32 – 01:06:40.58

 and kind of

Vince:

01:06:40.58 – 01:06:54.53

staring off into the distance like it was it was awesome and I remember like jumping up and down on the bleachers to like as he was running like it was just the energy of the stadium like literally willed Grant Halle to like just

Vince:

01:06:55.1 – 01:06:57.26

run fast enough to outrun that guy

Andrew:

01:06:57.27 – 01:07:12.5

I know and on top of that too Like when Ohio State got the ball back with uh like 4.5 minutes left I mean I don’t know if I’ve heard the stadium louder then those two defensive series like I don’t care who was

Andrew:

01:07:13.12 – 01:07:23.27

uh protecting the quarterback for those two defensive series Like our guys were getting through and sacking the quarterback It didn’t matter what team was playing like they were just running on Pure knows at that point

Vince:

01:07:23.28 – 01:07:29.39

Yeah It’s just one of those things with with the white out it’s so special Like the

Vince:

01:07:30.0 – 01:07:50.01

just the energy it’s crazy how much energy can impact the sport Like it doesn’t matter that the Ohio State players were better It was just like the energy of the white out just like possessed our defense you know to get to the quarterback and get them to the ground Like it’s just it’s like an out of body experience so

Andrew:

01:07:50.01 – 01:07:50.6

 much

Andrew:

01:07:50.8 – 01:08:07.61

And you have like I mean you just have like some absolute legend moments like if Jason Cabinda who had like a broken thumb so he’s like putting up his like his casted thumb in like a thumbs up like stance as he’s stacking the quarterback and stuff Like it just it just had so many cool storylines in there

Andrew:

01:08:08.33 – 01:08:15.36

So yeah Uh vince anything else that you want to chat about before we head out for the evening
