00:00:17.36 – 00:00:44.93

Kind of a bittersweet round table here this week So men’s basketball they did uh give Canisius a whip in In the end it was 97 to 67 to move to eight and three on the season However they did lose uh star player Seth lundy to an injury Uh the injury did not look good He was in a cast So I’m I’m really hoping that he’s getting better soon especially in the New year when the Lions get back to Big 10 play

Vince:

00:00:45.07 – 00:01:04.33

Um in the meantime however on thursday they’ll be playing quinnipiac at 8:30 p.m. And then the week after that they’ll be playing Delaware State 29th at two p.m. And then New Year’s Day We got the hot guys coming into the B J C At 5:30 p.m. Andrew What are your thoughts on the Seth lundy injury

Andrew:

00:01:05.14 – 00:01:18.32

Yeah I mean that you never want to see that because it seemed like Penn State was finally really getting into a groove um with their performance after upsetting Illinois So the fact that you’re gonna be losing a key contributor like lundy it that’s never a good thing

Vince:

00:01:18.33 – 00:01:26.01

Yeah And I’m concerned that’s going to be something like a high ankle sprain where he’s out 4-6 weeks and

Vince:

00:01:26.54 – 00:01:31.99

that’s that’s most of the season You know if it’s an injury of that length you’re only getting him

Vince:

00:01:32.59 – 00:01:53.87

you know like uh you know february and that’s like less than half your big 10 games he gets to play So that would definitely be a tough loss And hopefully it’s uh it’s not as serious as serious as it looked Coach Shrewsberry did say that he was in high spirits So you know hopefully hopefully things real quick Uh Women

Vince:

00:01:54.0 – 00:02:23.47

also had kind of a bittersweet defeat Uh They moved to eight and four in the season They lost at Drexel 86 to 82 over time So another tough loss for the Lions uh will be home against Cornell on the 21st at noon and home december 30th versus Rutgers at five p.m. The women’s volleyball team finished the year ranked number 11 in the country So uh great season for the Lady Lions moving to the sweet 16

Vince:

00:02:23.65 – 00:02:39.22

in the N C Double A Tournament Hockey stays stays put at five They didn’t play any games the past week and they’ll be playing the 30th at R I T And they’ll be playing home New Year’s Eve versus our I T At 5:30 p.m.

Vince:

00:02:39.63 – 00:03:09.61

They do have 22 tickets for $20 for bleacher seats So really good deal So if you’re in the valley this this weekend definitely come check out the hockey team Women’s hockey also will have some games around the holidays Will be playing the 30th and the 31st against Long Island University at two p.m. And one p.m. They remain at number 12 in the polls and then men’s wrestling is just doing men’s wrestling things Uh They be moved to six to know in the season They beat

Vince:

00:03:10.11 – 00:03:30.17

central michigan 52 3 and U N C Who is a ranked team 37 to 3 And actually as we’re recording there in the middle of their match against number seven Iowa State Andrew Do you think that the Cyclones will get to double digits in scoring against this Nittany Lion wrestling squad

Vince:

00:03:30.52 – 00:03:31.02

 Um

Andrew:

00:03:31.03 – 00:03:51.49

You know I think they have a pretty decent shot I would say it has a pretty good wrestling program So you know out of the ones that Penn State has faced so far I think they have a decent shot at getting to that milestone if you want to call it one especially just given kind of the volume of the wrestling duels that Penn state has gone through over the past couple of days So we’ll see what happens

Vince:

00:03:52.58 – 00:04:10.92

Yeah we’ll see And I believe Lehigh got double digits on Penn state in their matchup earlier in the season So it’ll be interesting to see how many teams are able to do it I know Iowa State and Iowa are definitely one of the better wrestling programs in the N C Double A So it’ll be cool to see how they match up Yeah

Andrew:

00:04:10.93 – 00:04:19.19

no doubt I mean there’s always gonna be some out of conference duals that Penn State fans are gonna be circling and this was certainly one of them

Vince:

00:04:20.0 – 00:04:32.87

In addition I think we need to talk about transfer portal news We had quarterback christian value uh just breaking Penn State fans heart going to pit What is your instant reaction to this move

Andrew:

00:04:32.88 – 00:04:34.91

 Pain nothing but pain

Andrew:

00:04:35.14 – 00:04:54.65

Um you know it I never um you know faulted christian for leaving P S U To go and search for opportunities Um you know he’s proven to be a guy who is a starting caliber quarterback So I thought it was smart of him to leave Penn State when he did But

Andrew:

00:04:54.77 – 00:05:20.99

um obviously going to pit um you know heated in state rival that’s uh that’s gonna hurt our souls as you said and um you know what I said to you and our group text outside of this pod It’s kind of an interesting move in my opinion for him to go to pit because pits already got a uh a commitment from transfer quarterback fill your ceviche from from boston college

Andrew:

00:05:21.16 – 00:05:34.08

and Phil has been a starting quarterback seen a lot of playing time in over the past couple of years Um so you know he’s a guy who is going to be coming in with significant playing time especially against A C C Competition

Andrew:

00:05:34.23 – 00:05:59.11

Whereas christian you know has uh he does have starting experience but it’s definitely not to the level of Phil so I just thought it was kind of an interesting move on christians part when I think there’s a good number of programs out there that are looking for a quarterback to come in right away So I’d be curious to know like what that conversation was like what that pitch was like on pits part but uh you know they got a good one that’s all I’ll say

Vince:

00:05:59.89 – 00:06:05.69

Yeah I think christian’s gonna win out and get that job I do have a lot of confidence in him It’s just

Vince:

00:06:06.47 – 00:06:29.2

Drew Lars here so it does make sense Uh It’s I don’t think it’s gonna be quite as bad as Jamari wheeler going to Ohio State bad because we’re not going to play pit for the next couple of years Um I think even you know penn State has their their games locked up out of conference till like 2025 or 27 or something and it’s not on there So

Vince:

00:06:29.76 – 00:06:40.39

I don’t think it’s gonna end up hurting us unless they run into each other in like an orange bowl or something So as long as we don’t play uh not too bad and we wish them the best

Andrew:

00:06:41.78 – 00:06:50.37

Yeah you know we’re always going to maintain the kind of the boilerplate stance of gonna Wish Wish our former Nittany Lions success

Vince:

00:06:51.27 – 00:07:18.15

yep And another guy that found a new home was defensive end Rodney McGraw to Louisville and this is something I feel like we forgot to talk about Jeff brohm Purdue coach has now taken the job there at Louisville which he is an alum of so Andrew What are your thoughts on McGraw and Jeff brohm leaving Purdue going to Louisville So what are your thoughts on the program for Louisville and Purdue

Vince:

00:07:18.75 – 00:07:19.06

 Well

Andrew:

00:07:19.06 – 00:07:30.61

I think that it made sense in a couple different ways because actually Purdue was one of the schools that I thought might make a move for McGraw when he entered the portal just because um

Andrew:

00:07:31.25 – 00:07:57.64

McGraw is originally from indiana So I thought that the close to home aspect of his recruitment might land him at Purdue and the Purdue Purdue has had some some good success turning out some defensive lineman into the NFL I mean we see names like George Karl office doing some big things in the NFL already So I thought the stars kind of aligned there that McGraw might end up at Purdue and so with Jeff braun then making the move to

Andrew:

00:07:57.77 – 00:08:15.49

Louisville I wonder you know how much of that still kind of played a part where like Bram is still connected to the state of indiana in some way but uh you know he was able to kind of pitch that move to McGraw um kind of just saying you know you’re gonna get instant playing time

Vince:

00:08:15.49 – 00:08:16.39

 Like I think there

Andrew:

00:08:16.39 – 00:08:18.21

was there was a lot of appeal there

Vince:

00:08:19.16 – 00:08:36.635

Yeah I think this is a really good hire for Louisville They were they were a good program this year I think they went like seven and five or eight and four And Jeff braun has done an amazing job with Purdue If you look at Purdue like five years ago they were like the Rutgers of the Big 10 where we just like

Vince:

00:08:36.645 – 00:08:54.13

And be like Hey we’re playing Purdue and week one of the season They definitely uh you know gave us gave me at least a lot of worries and it ended up being a really close game They won the big 10 West So you know he definitely did a good job of leaving Purdue better when he left it

Vince:

00:08:55.24 – 00:09:13.58

It looks like many lions fans have been good We got a little early christmas gift We got Hunter Riley Thompson from florida atlantic atlantic university all american punter His stats are even better than barney A more what are your thoughts on this pick up for coach franklin and the lines in the portal

Andrew:

00:09:13.59 – 00:09:20.52

I mean it’s huge Like um talented high end specialists are such a

Andrew:

00:09:20.68 – 00:09:45.8

rare thing in college football I mean the running joke is college kickers right Like they missed kicks that’s what they’re known to do because they’re young You know they’re not they they’re not gonna be as like experience as NFL kickers So you never know when those guys are gonna miss their mark and the same is true for a punter Like we’ve talked about numerous times in this podcast we’ve seen years where we’ve had subpar punting

Andrew:

00:09:45.94 – 00:09:52.47

and where that’s kind of landed Nittany lions and hot water Um you know with poor field position and things like that

Andrew:

00:09:52.61 – 00:10:20.35

So the fact that you know they’re gonna get a guy who is going to be able to kind of pin it on a dime and help flip the field for a really talented um sack Hungary defense like that can’t really be overstated So I think this is gonna be um just a really nice transition from Barney a more um going into next season and you know looking at the next two seasons when the window is really open for Penn State to make a playoff push Like I I think that it made a lot of sense for both parties

Vince:

00:10:21.25 – 00:10:30.47

Yeah it does And his best kick was 70 yards this year So big leg you’re not gonna see any past gorilla like 25 yard punts or anything

Andrew:

00:10:30.48 – 00:10:30.8

 right

Vince:

00:10:30.81 – 00:10:49.4

now I think you might see the numbers go down a little bit just because of the weather being colder up here in the northeast and down south So you know I think that could play a little bit of factor into the stats but overall a great player and I’m happy we got one of the items on my wish list before christmas

Andrew:

00:10:50.12 – 00:10:55.14

Yeah yeah yeah exactly So now they only have a couple more boxes to check off

Vince:

00:10:55.15 – 00:11:17.35

Um Speaking of big things happening uh in state college we got some more things coming on on the recruitment front We now we have 34 star linebacker’s coming to Happy Valley next year In this 2023 recruiting class we got four star linebacker K bianchi’s who just committed along with Tony Rojas and Tamir Robinson

Vince:

00:11:17.64 – 00:11:20.44

uh linebacker he was back baby

Andrew:

00:11:20.45 – 00:11:37.15

yep Yeah I mean this is huge like Penn State um should be recruiting blue chip recruits at the linebacker position every single year So the fact that we’re getting a crop of them like this is very significant Um and I think that

Andrew:

00:11:37.35 – 00:11:54.46

uh seeing the way that Penn State has used the linebackers this year has been a significant factor in recruiting guys like that because I mean how could a linebacker recruit in high school not look at how Penn State is using um Abdul carter and not say man I want to do that too

Vince:

00:11:55.49 – 00:12:15.15

Yeah and I think it just puts all those guys and Penn State in a really good position because you’ve got veteran guys like Abdul carter Curtis Jacobs uh Dominic Deluca Tyler Elson is still back I believe for one more year So it doesn’t put pressure on these guys to be good right away and

Vince:

00:12:15.56 – 00:12:43.19

you know it’s not like we got one of these guys we have three of them so if you’re just throwing darts at a dartboard one of them is likely to stick and you know now if all three of them stick that’s awesome But you know it’s the reality of recruiting and you know evaluations and you know it doesn’t always work out you know for kids from high school to college So the fact that we got all these I think that’s great signs We also got a three star commit running back Cameron Wallace out of Georgia

Vince:

00:12:43.51 – 00:12:50.17

So I think that’s good to continue to build up the running back corps get some deaths Should we get some injuries next year

Andrew:

00:12:50.73 – 00:13:20.3

Yeah for sure And I think that you know Penn State going back to the linebackers like the fact that Penn State rotates their defensive players so often um was also a pretty nice draw for these guys because we can pretty confidently say you know you’re gonna get some playing time here pretty early on because you know we just want fresh bodies we want fresh legs going after the quarterback um during each defensive series So um huge things for Penn State I mean I think James franklin and Crew have made good on their promises

Andrew:

00:13:20.42 – 00:13:50.22

uh to recruit at a higher level after we saw a little bit of a dip Um you know midway between now and the 2016 run to the Big 10 championship So I think they’re recruiting at a really high level and then on the note of the running back um you know super glad that we’re gonna be grabbing a pair of running backs again in this upcoming class I think it was definitely needed um after the uh departures of cause I homes and also um Devin Ford who

Andrew:

00:13:50.38 – 00:14:12.59

retired from football to pursue more of his academic endeavors So I think that’s uh that’s really good you know just from from a depth perspective And I also think that that probably kind of closes the door on Penn State going after a guy um in the transfer portal just because like a lot of the like some of the names that we mentioned before probably aren’t gonna be going to a room that’s gonna be filled with town

Andrew:

00:14:12.6 – 00:14:34.7

like this unless they’re kind of looking to feel more of that Jonathan Lovett role like I mentioned before Um so you know I don’t I don’t want to say it’s impossible but I just think that the window of opportunity closed a little bit there but still you know I’m I’m glad that Penn State is going to be um kind of hauling in running back talent like they have been at a consistent pace ever since a Kwan

Vince:

00:14:34.71 – 00:14:41.88

Yeah Uh you know we got linebacker you were turning into running back you and tight end you like

Andrew:

00:14:42.11 – 00:14:43.2

 just

Vince:

00:14:43.2 – 00:14:50.95

gonna be eventually we’re gonna get all these positions covered at such a high level So you know they just got to keep it up and

Vince:

00:14:51.48 – 00:15:14.71

yeah we got got these recruits hopefully it starts stacking up in some you know uh big 10 championship win some Roosevelt appearances and college football playoffs And uh speaking of uh bull games we got a big one coming up It’s gonna be electric It’s going to be like the Tesla deal You just saw Abdul carter and

Vince:

00:15:14.99 – 00:15:36.26

Caleb king and Olu Fashanu drew our sign So there’s there’s gonna be some more Tesla and state college We don’t really have the charging platforms for them But you know here they are signing a big deal and um that’s just one positive to take with them heading into the new year as they get ready to play the Utes down in Pasadena

Andrew:

00:15:37.07 – 00:15:52.17

Absolutely yeah Um I even saw a billboard I think it was like for personal injury lawyer or something with abdel carter’s picture on it so kind of cool that those guys are getting the visibility for the big things that they’re doing on the field

Vince:

00:15:52.81 – 00:16:06.34

Yeah I saw a joke from Ben jones on on twitter and he said I mean I wonder how much I would have to pay Abdul carter to tackle me so I could write a story about how much he got hurt getting tackled by Abdul carter

Andrew:

00:16:08.27 – 00:16:15.06

I don’t know Yeah that’s uh you know that’s an experiment worth seeing through I guess

Vince:

00:16:15.07 – 00:16:18.18

Yeah I’m assuming it was one of those injury lawyers

Andrew:

00:16:18.19 – 00:16:18.92

 Yeah

Vince:

00:16:19.63 – 00:16:35.96

yeah So that that’d be good um Kind of makes you surprised you know when you think of cards you think of like you know fast and sleek maybe like a running back or wide receiver So kind of surprised not to see nick Singleton there I don’t know Maybe he’s gonna try to go with like Ferrari or McLaren

Andrew:

00:16:36.7 – 00:17:00.54

Yeah I’m not sure what his N I L Um dealings have been so far I I saw that before this season took place that he had signed a pretty significant deal with somewhere Um I’d have to look up the specifics on that But you know to be honest I could see him down the road You know maybe after another really solid season here um signing with like Gatorade or something

Andrew:

00:17:00.74 – 00:17:14.75

So you know maybe it has to do like with his representation or his agent I don’t really know the specifics of how it all works but maybe they’re kind of biding their time to uh look at the really big lucrative deals

Vince:

00:17:14.76 – 00:17:19.74

Oh for sure So this game is going to be played on the second at five p.m

Vince:

00:17:19.9 – 00:17:43.68

The weather should be a lot better than that in this year in P A You’re gonna see uh sunny skies down in Pasadena should be a beautiful day I went to California for a work trip last year I was there for five days I didn’t see a single cloud It was like 70 degrees every day So I think you’re gonna see some good weather and

Vince:

00:17:43.81 – 00:18:11.69

I think it’s gonna make it a little easier to throw the football in this matchup This is Penn State’s first matchup against the Utes they have never played in college football So this will set the tone for a potential rivalry Especially if you see um you know USC and U C L A Coming over here to the Big 10 then that could create more matchups for a Penn State and the Utah Utes in the Rose Bowl

Andrew:

00:18:12.6 – 00:18:21.89

Yeah for sure And I mean Penn State has really been on the cusp of you know going to the Rose Bowl multiple times over the past handful of years You know it’s just kind of gone to

Andrew:

00:18:22.07 – 00:18:47.62

um gone to Ohio State or michigan by default you know whoever kind of doesn’t go into the college football playoff at the time But you know Penn State’s been right there Obviously Utah has kind of broken through to go go to the Rose Bowl a couple of times now um with this being their second consecutive trip to Pasadena So yeah I mean I definitely think it’s possible that we’ll be seeing the Utes um a handful of times over the next

Andrew:

00:18:47.83 – 00:19:02.76

Um a couple of years especially once playoff expansion happens I mean I still think that Utah is gonna be a presence that’s gonna exist within the top 10 the top 12 of college football So who knows we might uh like you said kind of start maybe a bit of a rivalry with them

Vince:

00:19:03.8 – 00:19:18.85

Yeah it could happen And this is the second year they’ve finished 10 3 they’ve been pac 12 champions They haven’t lost a game at home the past two years So they’ve done a good job taking care of work at home and uh

Vince:

00:19:19.41 – 00:19:45.25

um you know holding on enough on on the road And they had three close losses this year They were on the road week one against florida lost a heartbreaker They lost at U C L A By 10 points and they lost at Oregon by three However they finished off their season really strong including beating USC twice And USC is a really good football program Lincoln Riley has really built that up

Vince:

00:19:45.43 – 00:19:53.08

So who are some players that you’re looking to see for the youths that could pence give Penn State fits

Andrew:

00:19:53.69 – 00:20:06.41

So I really think it it starts with cam rising at the quarterback position Um You know I really can’t say enough about this guy He just looks like such a poised player in command of his troops Um He’s a guy that

Andrew:

00:20:06.6 – 00:20:30.8

really seems to emulate his head coach Kyle Whittingham Um He’s tough he doesn’t mind getting hit he’s very patient Um It’s very opportunistic when he’s running the football but overall he’s a playmaker Um And you know we we’ve talked a little bit about how Utah has had a couple of opt outs including their top pass catcher in dalton Kincaid and

Andrew:

00:20:30.98 – 00:21:00.37

you know to that end I don’t think it really matters um as much as it would be with other programs because I just think that cam arising is that good I think that he just elevates all the players around him all the guys trust him and they all kind of just take on that same mentality as he does where you know he just kind of says we’re gonna be tough we’re not gonna flinch when we get hit we’re gonna hit right back And you know I think that really just lends itself well to what they’ve been able to accomplish as a physical tough football team

Andrew:

00:21:00.71 – 00:21:19.49

Um and so just kind of branching off from him um you know the players that I’m really gonna be looking at are the running backs uh the the young tandem of Quinton Jackson and Michael Bernard both of these guys had a pretty big game in the pac 12 championship game against USC Um and I think that they

Andrew:

00:21:19.5 – 00:21:43.3

they really kind of helped set the tone of this being kind of a michigan esque team as you’ve mentioned in the past where you know they’re just gonna be pounding the rock over and over and over again with these running backs and just kind of grind you down and they’ll just eventually get stronger as the game progresses because they’ve just worn down the defense that much and that really played itself out in that game against USC and like I said both of these guys had some pretty eye popping stat lines

Andrew:

00:21:43.63 – 00:21:58.56

um as far as pass catchers go you know obviously like we said uh Kincaid has opted out of this game but they do have another uh dangerous tight end and thomas yachtsman who only had a couple of catches in the pac 12 championship game

Vince:

00:21:58.57 – 00:22:00.19

 but that one was huge

Andrew:

00:22:00.2 – 00:22:12.63

Oh yeah I mean he’s a playmaker so he’ll he’ll make some plays after the catch You know I think he’s gonna be another guy who’s gonna be really tough for the Penn State defense to bring down So they’re gonna want to make sure that he’s accounted for Um

Andrew:

00:22:13.15 – 00:22:41.92

and then at the wide receiver spot I mean obviously they like to feature their tight ends as pass catchers but um receiver that I’m looking at is money parks Um you know he’s somebody that is gonna be I think pretty focused on um on rising side with Kincaid opting out But also you know he’s somebody that’s been you know rising up as far as his performances in recent games also had a really nice game against uh against the trojans in the pac 12 championship game So

Andrew:

00:22:42.04 – 00:22:53.23

I think he’ll be another name that Pence is gonna want to keep an eye on especially as we’re um gonna try to do our part to lock down things in the air with the talented secondary that the Nittany Lions have

Andrew:

00:22:53.71 – 00:23:19.81

Um and then moving over to the defense uh you know another big name opting out on that side in all american cornerback clark phillips who has declared for the NFL draft I mean he’s gonna be a guy that’s going to be very high on pretty much everybody’s draft boards Um So look to see his name called in in the first round But um that is not to say that this defense is lacking for talent because boy are they dangerous everywhere

Andrew:

00:23:19.96 – 00:23:40.09

Um name that I really want to highlight the most here is their safety R J Hubert Um he’s second on the team in interceptions after clark phillips Um he’s tied for first in fumble recoveries and he’s also the team’s second leading tackler So you know this is just a guy who shows up all over the stat sheet

Andrew:

00:23:40.1 – 00:24:00.22

for the Utes does a little bit of everything He’s very opportunistic Um you know takes the ball away from the opposing offense Uh so kind of reminds me a little bit of J R Brown where you know you just see him all over the field he’s making plays he’s sacking the quarterback he’s hanging back to snag a few out of the air like he just really reminds me of jay here Um And then they also

Andrew:

00:24:00.23 – 00:24:20.37

we have another really dangerous safety in Coal Bishop who is actually the team’s leading tackler So they love to get their safeties involved So I think that they’re both going to be very active during this game as far as trying to put pressure on Sean Clifford and uh you know just looking to kind of shut down the Penn state offense and then um

Andrew:

00:24:20.62 – 00:24:49.55

they just have a slew I would say of linebackers um you know just really bringing together this really tough football team this tough defense for the Utes Um and the one that I really want to highlight is uh Karen Reed and I hope I’m pronouncing that name correctly Um really want to highlight him because he leads the linebackers in tackles And he’s also just another guy who shows up all over the stat sheet for the Utes He has fumble recoveries um he has passes defended

Andrew:

00:24:49.68 – 00:25:07.72

Um so he’s just a bit of a do it all guy and I mean we we saw just what that defensive line for the Utes can do um against USC I mean they were just teeing off on Caleb Williams toward the end of that game So I think that this is just a really stout defense really tough defense and so I think it’s gonna be a tough test all around

Vince:

00:25:08.92 – 00:25:29.66

Yeah you covered just about every name I had on my list offensively you just hit the nail on the head with everyone The running backs both averaged over eight yards per carry against USC So it’s almost a first down every single run which is really incredible against a top five program like the trojans and

Vince:

00:25:30.15 – 00:25:56.79

uh you know cam rising has had some really good games However I feel like he’s kind of like Sean Clifford where every once in a while when he’s going up against a good defense um he can throw some throw some picks Uh you saw that he had three against Oregon in that close loss they had So you know hopefully our pass rush can get there and force him into some bad decisions get some sacks and hopefully that can create some

Vince:

00:25:57.02 – 00:26:26.47

interception opportunities for the secondary Another guy I want to highlight on their defense is gay breed the pass rusher He just had a monster game against USC three tackles for loss and two sacks Another guy who had there was uh Diabate a linebacker probably butchering his last name but he had two tackles for loss and two sacks So they were just wrecking havoc over USC in the pac 12 championship game

Vince:

00:26:26.66 – 00:26:32.54

So those are another few guys on that incredible defense that we need to keep an eye out for

Andrew:

00:26:34.18 – 00:26:46.07

Yeah for sure And I think that um just the fact that there are so many names that we could call out on the defense just makes it that much more important that we’re getting olu fashion you back for this game

Vince:

00:26:47.2 – 00:26:57.23

Yes agreed And there’s another safety of AKI in the stat sheet to you know has tackled for loss if you go down the list you know tool the defensive end

Vince:

00:26:58.36 – 00:27:27.79

Yeah there’s there’s a bunch of names that are all getting tackles for a loss So it almost makes you think of Penn State’s defense that the past month so a lot of names and uh you know franklin’s gonna have to dial up some you know good protections for Sean Clifford and maybe we’ll keep the tight ends in a little bit more than we typically would for pass blocking So you know we’ll see how it goes and uh you know see how it plays out Um Andrew what are some things that you think Penn State needs to do to win this game

Andrew:

00:27:28.86 – 00:27:45.02

So there’s three things that I jotted down here which I think are gonna be major keys Um The first is taking care of the football and I know that this sounds obvious it’s something that we say for pretty much every game preview that we’ve done so far but Utah is plus eight in the

Andrew:

00:27:45.03 – 00:28:01.2

turnover ratio Um so they find a lot of different ways to take the ball away from the opposing offense and they love to just sustain long physical drives Um And so if you combine that with giving the ball away like first of all you’re looking at um

Andrew:

00:28:01.46 – 00:28:28.98

a very low amount of possession time for your own offense and you’re also just looking at a defense that’s gonna get worn down because they’re gonna be on the field so often um and having to defend a really physical run heavy offense like that is not a recipe for success So my number one thing is taking care of the football Um number two kind of falls into a similar category Um just like with helping out our defense and that is the defense has to get off the field on third down

Andrew:

00:28:29.17 – 00:28:34.38

Um I feel like at times Penn State’s defense kind of gets into a law where

Andrew:

00:28:34.59 – 00:29:00.49

um they’re in third and long situation and they let the quarterback kind of scramble around find the open guy and uh convert allowing what was allowing the drive that was essentially dead to rights just kind of continue on and we see that sometimes convert into uh field goals or touchdowns We even saw that in the very um last game of the season against Michigan State Like we saw Michigan State convert like 3rd and 18 and 3rd and 10 on the same drive

Andrew:

00:29:00.63 – 00:29:16.53

Like this is not something that Penn State can allow to happen Um you know really more than once I would say and hope to um kind of see success throughout the entire game because cam arising I mean um you know I know that he

Andrew:

00:29:16.73 – 00:29:42.27

like you said he’s thrown a couple of interceptions in in some moments but for the most part he’s a guy who’s nimble on his feet He’s uh he’s he’s good at improvising and so I think that he could potentially get Penn State sleeping in a couple of those situations So I think it’s just crucial for them to get off the field on third and long situations and then the third is sustaining drives for the Penn State offense like we’ve seen so many times over the past few years and

Andrew:

00:29:42.4 – 00:30:10.59

including a couple of times this year where the penn State offense um just kind of sputters like they are looking to kind of get their feet under them find a little bit of rhythm and then eventually kind of explode for a handful of points And I don’t think that that’s really gonna work in this situation I think that they’re gonna have to come out with the mentality that they’re gonna match Utah’s physicality their toughness and really get the run game going I’d love to see a heavy dose of nick singleton and k tron Allen early on

Andrew:

00:30:10.76 – 00:30:29.2

um kind of like what we saw against Auburn you know just really kind of come out and send a message and say you know we’re gonna try to pound the rock here as well and then just not get off to a three announce start Like I don’t want to give the ball right back to the Utah offense some kind of give their d

Andrew:

00:30:29.21 – 00:30:47.67

defense a little bit of extra juice and just kind of saying okay like we’ve got these guys like no like we got to sustain drives gotta stay on the field Um and ultimately just convert those opportunities which they have been doing pretty well once they’ve gotten into the red zone but those are my three major keys So what about you what do you think Penn State needs to do

Vince:

00:30:48.58 – 00:31:17.57

Yeah the first thing I think Penn State needs to do is get off to a fast start and put points up early and try to get Utah to get away from the run game That that’s where I think they are at their best running the football and you know that was very evident with USC they got 223 rushing yards So I think if you can make them a little bit one dimensional I think that will help a lot My second point is I think Sean Clifford needs to have a big day

Vince:

00:31:18.01 – 00:31:47.14

Um the the youths they have held five of their last six opponents to 62 rush yards or less and that includes USC so you know this team is they’re they’re stout they do not move So this is this is a game where I think Sean is going to have to have a big day kind of like he did against Ohio state with those 371 pass yards he had

Vince:

00:31:47.42 – 00:32:07.73

and he needs to have a day like that if Penn State’s gonna win this game because this is a tough defense I think their first priority is going to be stopped the run because I’m sure they don’t want to see kate Ron allen and nick singleton breaking it to the house So I think that’s going to be their priority So I think that’ll create opportunities in the passing game

Vince:

00:32:08.14 – 00:32:37.21

Uh you are right that they do need to get off the field on third down There’s just a lot of times where you know the other team does a slant right to the middle for an easy first down However that’s kind of the style that Penn State has adopted with this new personality they seem to have on defense They just seem to be more aggressive to the quarterback and you know when we’re playing that way you know it’s feast or famine we get a sack or a tackle for loss or we get a first down So

Vince:

00:32:37.38 – 00:32:47.3

I feel like that’s kind of the style we’ve seen So it’s had a lot mostly good things But I do think that that is where you’re seeing all those third downs come from

Andrew:

00:32:48.06 – 00:33:15.8

Yeah that’s a good point And I mean uh to Penn State’s credit they’ve gotten home enough times where that hasn’t um significantly hurt them I just think that you know cam arising in this offense Um this is the best offense at Penn State Uh we’ll see since Ohio State So I just don’t think that they’re gonna be able to rely on um trying to pressure the quarterback or like get them on the ground or something like that enough times before Utah is able to do some significant damage to them

Vince:

00:33:16.26 – 00:33:41.61

Yeah I think this game is gonna be really exciting I think this will be another game where jake Pinegar and special teams need to have a bounce back day They can’t have any uh miss field goals or any mistakes because we’re not playing michigan state we’re not playing rockers we’re not playing indiana we’re not playing Maryland we’re playing a good quality top 10 football team So they need to bring their a game and play lights out

Andrew:

00:33:41.81 – 00:34:03.55

Yeah And I feel like you know my feeling for this game is that I think they will um just because for the most part this season outside of the michigan game which is the obvious example Penn State has done a pretty good job of playing to the level of their opponent for better or worse You know we we saw them closely compete with Ohio State for

Andrew:

00:34:03.56 – 00:34:25.31

for like 75% of that game even leading in crucial moments before Ohio State just did Ohio State things Um and eventually got the score line that they did but I think that you know Penn State um has risen to the occasion like I said with the exception of michigan So I think that you know those guys are gonna be amped up they’re gonna be ready and I think that the coaching staff is going to have them prepared

Vince:

00:34:26.15 – 00:34:50.71

Yeah I think so too I I don’t foresee this being a game where they get blown out Uh I think this is a game that you will see Penn State in the lead early I think it’s just a matter of holding on for four quarters and not running out of gas like they did against michigan and Ohio State So I think that’s gonna be the biggest factor as the game goes on I don’t foresee them losing by more than

Vince:

00:34:51.28 – 00:35:02.82

uh 10 or 11 I think that’s like the worst case scenario maybe 14 But yeah so I think this is going to be a battle either way I don’t think it’s gonna be a blowout and

Vince:

00:35:03.34 – 00:35:09.53

it’s gonna be probably their best game of the season I think I think this is a really interesting matchup

Andrew:

00:35:09.54 – 00:35:20.5

So the way that you’re speaking here kind of makes me think that you’re gonna be picking the Utes in this in this matchup Am I spoiling a little something with that

Vince:

00:35:21.06 – 00:35:23.22

Maybe you ready for over Unders

Andrew:

00:35:23.23 – 00:35:24.42

 Yeah let’s do it

Vince:

00:35:25.13 – 00:35:33.49

Alright so right now the sports books they have Penn state covering the spread and winning by two Do you think they’re able to do that

Andrew:

00:35:33.5 – 00:35:35.71

Yes I do I have them covering

Vince:

00:35:36.42 – 00:35:40.47

I spoiler I’m taking taking the under

Vince:

00:35:41.8 – 00:35:45.91

points within any lines over under 26.5

Andrew:

00:35:46.56 – 00:35:59.37

I have over but just slightly over I mean I don’t think this is gonna be a game where either team is gonna score a ton of points I just think that both of these defenses are too good Uh so I I do have the over but only by a smidge

Vince:

00:36:00.4 – 00:36:27.91

Yeah I think this is a game where both the defenses are going to be dominant However I wouldn’t be as surprised if it’s in like the thirties because you know the the weather is going to be a lot better and you know especially Penn State has been dealing with kind of poor conditions which makes it harder to score So um I wouldn’t be surprised But yeah I have the under points against the Nittany Lions 24 a half over or under

Andrew:

00:36:28.34 – 00:36:30.96

I have under but just slightly under

Vince:

00:36:31.64 – 00:36:34.0

I have the under as well

Vince:

00:36:34.65 – 00:36:40.98

How do you think Penn State’s rushing attack will do over under 150 yards on the ground

Andrew:

00:36:40.99 – 00:37:01.34

I will take the under but again like just slightly under I mean like you said this Utah rush defense is so good Um they’ve limited opposing teams that have really talented running backs to minimal yards So as much as you know we love Nick and Catherine I think that it’s gonna be tough sledding for them

Andrew:

00:37:01.49 – 00:37:04.92

Um so you know I’d love to be wrong but I will take the under here

Vince:

00:37:05.51 – 00:37:26.78

Yeah I think you’re right I have the under as well even though we have really done a good job on the offensive line of establishing the run game and getting nick and Katrina going I just don’t see them getting that many yards against the seats defense they’re they’re just too good So I’ll take the under uh passing yards over under 2 50

Andrew:

00:37:26.79 – 00:37:34.83

I’ll take the over Um yeah I’ll take the over but not it’ll be closer to like 250 then it will be 2 300

Andrew:

00:37:35.02 – 00:37:53.59

Um I think that Sean is a guy who is experienced enough he’s savvy enough to kind of make the most of the opportunities Um I I do like um a good number of Penn State’s playmakers in this contest especially with some guys stepping up in the passing game So I’ll take the over here

Vince:

00:37:54.15 – 00:37:58.92

I’m gonna take the over as well I I feel good about Sean in this game It’s it’s his last game

Vince:

00:37:59.49 – 00:38:07.27

I think he’s gonna have a big performance So I’ll take the over Penn State turnovers over under 1.5 Are

Andrew:

00:38:07.27 – 00:38:10.06

you saying the number of times that we turn the ball over

Vince:

00:38:10.07 – 00:38:11.07

 correct

Andrew:

00:38:11.08 – 00:38:26.94

Um I’ll still take the over I mean this Utah defense has been very opportunistic with taking the ball away So I could see them snagging one out of the air and also punching one out of the running backs arms Um So I think I’ll take the over here with two

Vince:

00:38:27.45 – 00:38:36.67

Yeah I’ll take the over as well I think you’ll see probably one Sean Clifford interception He’ll he’ll probably be great all game and then have like one throw where you’re like what’s going on

Andrew:

00:38:36.67 – 00:38:37.39

 Like

Vince:

00:38:37.81 – 00:38:59.32

uh so that’s just kind of what I’ve gone from his career and kind of what I expect every week then I think maybe there’s there’s a fumble somewhere whether it’s a running back or special teams or receiver trying to fight for those extra yards So I think that’s how it will go down How do you think this defense does with takeaways over under 1.5

Andrew:

00:38:59.33 – 00:39:07.28

Yeah I’ll take the over here again as well Um because I you know penn State has done a pretty good job of finding those opportunities especially as they’ve gotten

Andrew:

00:39:07.45 – 00:39:17.82

um very pass rush happy especially incorporating guys like Abdul carter into the mix So I think that they’re going to create a couple of opportunities to take the ball away themselves

Vince:

00:39:17.83 – 00:39:37.16

Yeah I’ll take the over as well This this pass rush and let’s be honest probably Oregon Oregon’s defense is more comparable to ours than some of the defense’s USCs defense is not necessarily great That team is more carried by Caleb Williams and the offense So

Vince:

00:39:37.47 – 00:39:47.94

I they gave Oregon gave them a really hard time They forced three interceptions So I think our defense will be able to force two turnovers in a neutral field

Andrew:

00:39:48.54 – 00:39:54.56

Yeah personally I think that this is gonna be the best defense that the youth will have faced all season

Vince:

00:39:55.68 – 00:40:04.14

agreed on the offensive line How do we do in pass protection over under 2.5 sacks on Sean Clifford

Andrew:

00:40:04.15 – 00:40:06.23

 over under 2.5 You said

Vince:

00:40:06.24 – 00:40:07.32

 yep

Andrew:

00:40:07.33 – 00:40:19.16

I will take the under I think we’re looking at two sacks Um I believe in this offensive line especially with old fashioned coming back I think there has been um you know some guys who have gotten some

Andrew:

00:40:19.42 – 00:40:36.57

very valuable playing time at other positions across the offensive line and I have some really solid performances down the stretch Um so you know I don’t think they’re gonna have a perfect game I think this defensive line for Utah is too good uh to let that happen But I’m gonna take the under here

Vince:

00:40:36.58 – 00:40:47.81

So I’ll take the over But I’m I’m gonna say three I think it’s uh it’s gonna be one or two of those sacks are gonna come like right near the end of the game where

Vince:

00:40:47.98 – 00:41:00.71

Sean has to hang on for the ball longer than he typically would just to try to make a play kind of like a crunch time moment So I’ll go with the over for Saxon Sean Clifford or rural or depending who’s playing

Andrew:

00:41:01.73 – 00:41:02.55

 right

Vince:

00:41:03.44 – 00:41:11.29

All right over under uh 2.5 sacks for the Penn State Front seven I’m

Andrew:

00:41:11.29 – 00:41:23.3

taking the over Um I love this pass rush I love the playmakers So yeah I mean um a little bit of a spoiler My Communion prediction um deals with this particular stat line So I’m taking the over here

Vince:

00:41:23.31 – 00:41:28.45

Nice I think I will I think I’ll take the under with two

Vince:

00:41:28.74 – 00:41:43.52

I think I think they’re going to try to run the ball a lot and I think it’ll be give us less opportunities so I think I’ll go to but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a game more Penn State does get more

Andrew:

00:41:43.53 – 00:41:44.31

 right

Vince:

00:41:44.45 – 00:41:58.26

because like we talked about we talked about feast and famine So you’re gonna feel like you’re gonna have some head scratching you know third and longs that got converted but then sometimes it’s going to result in sacks So yeah definitely wouldn’t be surprised

Vince:

00:41:58.45 – 00:42:00.48

Alright Ready for fact or fiction

Andrew:

00:42:00.49 – 00:42:01.65

 Yes sir

Vince:

00:42:01.66 – 00:42:07.75

Alright fact or fiction Clifford will leave fans with a positive impact in his last game In

Andrew:

00:42:07.76 – 00:42:23.16

fact um I think that Sean is on a mission I think that he’s you know he’s personally I think he he feels like he’s playing with house money right now I mean um talk about just like a way to go out with your pencil a career Like he

Andrew:

00:42:23.39 – 00:42:35.41

um has set like every record as the quarterback for Penn State Um He’s done incredible things with his academic career starting his own N I L Agency which is

Andrew:

00:42:35.6 – 00:42:59.12

um I’m sure gonna be a huge part of his life if not you know his entire like professional endeavor Um once he decides to hang up his cleats I mean he’s just done pretty much everything for Penn State including winning a New Year’s Six Bowl So you know I think that he’s going to be playing free I think that he’s experienced enough to kind of put on a good show for Penn State in this last game He’s a guy who

Andrew:

00:42:59.25 – 00:43:18.01

you know while he has had his struggles he’s also risen to the occasion on a couple of key moments I mean even in the very first game of the season against Purdue put together a solid game winning drive So I think that he’s gonna have a good game um in this Rose Bowl and I think that Penn State fans are gonna look back on his time fondly

Vince:

00:43:18.61 – 00:43:30.8

Yeah me too I’ll say fact I think he’s gonna have a great day you might see a mistake here and there But overall I think he’s gonna have a good day and uh you know state fans at the end of the day are going to be happy if they had him

Vince:

00:43:31.72 – 00:43:36.65

Alright fact or fiction Penn State will outrushed Utah

Andrew:

00:43:36.66 – 00:43:58.25

also in fact um this might be my home a rhythm showing but you know I just I I like um you know I just I love K Tron and nick I think that they’re going to find the opportunities uh to you know get into the second level of the Utah defense you know as few of those opportunities uh that might come

Andrew:

00:43:58.39 – 00:44:20.32

but you know I also think that penn State for the most part like when they’ve been asked to stop the run they have um you know we we talked go all the way back to the Auburn game like we were terrified of Tank Bigsby and this vaunted rushing attack and basically saying like oh my God like we have to stop they’re running they’re running attack or else we have no shot like

Andrew:

00:44:20.48 – 00:44:37.82

you know that sort of terror and then they just absolutely negated like their entire rushing attack So I don’t think that they’re gonna be like limiting these guys to like under 100 yards collectively or anything like that But I just I have enough belief in our guys to take the fact here

Vince:

00:44:37.83 – 00:44:44.88

I’m gonna say fiction I’m gonna counteract your point by saying Auburn didn’t even make a

Vince:

00:44:45.47 – 00:45:15.0

a ball game this year So uh while while we were afraid of Tank Bigsby uh you know for your example they weren’t a great team overall and it definitely one guy cannot just carry the rushing attack However I will counteract that point that if Penn State gets more rushing yards than Utah they’re winning this football game Uh no ifs ands or buts if they can get that rushing attack going and you know manage the ball well and make the passing game easier for sean

Vince:

00:45:15.27 – 00:45:33.51

then you know the lines are definitely gonna come out of there with the w alright fact or fiction K tron Allen and nick Singleton will combine for 26 touchdowns on the season right now They’re sitting at 21 Can they get to that say kwon Barkley 26 touchdown mark

Andrew:

00:45:33.52 – 00:45:39.77

Oh man that that’s tough Um I’m gonna I’m gonna say fiction here um Just because I think that

Andrew:

00:45:39.93 – 00:45:51.46

we’re likely gonna see some tight ends as red zone targets uh in this game So I could see them getting like two or three collectively but five is that’s that’s kind of a high number So I’ll say fiction

Vince:

00:45:51.47 – 00:45:57.13

Yeah I’ll say say fiction as well even if you count uh

Vince:

00:45:57.37 – 00:46:05.98

Nick Singleton’s uh you know kick return for a touchdown that would bring them up 20-4 is still quite a high number

Andrew:

00:46:06.18 – 00:46:07.11

 I’ll

Vince:

00:46:07.11 – 00:46:18.17

say fiction there That was an illuminati thing that I thought would be funny if it happened but unfortunately they didn’t get a ton of touchdowns against michigan state so I kind of messed up that sad a little

Andrew:

00:46:18.17 – 00:46:19.39

 bit

Vince:

00:46:20.22 – 00:46:28.32

Alright uh Next one we can get 300 passing yards on a good Utah defense without parker Washington

Andrew:

00:46:29.07 – 00:46:41.87

I’m gonna say fiction Um I think that the secondary is still for Utah the secondary is still very good even without cork phillips um So I think that they’re going to be pretty good in limiting those opportunities I

Vince:

00:46:41.87 – 00:46:43.01

 mean Caleb

Andrew:

00:46:43.01 – 00:46:58.33

Williams had a pretty solid passing day against that team but he’s he’s Caleb Williams like you know there uh like Penn State is uh is a team that is built to you know kind of utilize the tight ends and

Andrew:

00:46:58.51 – 00:47:22.72

um kind of get the ball outside to the playmakers as far as pass catchers go and then let them do their thing Um right now I don’t see that as being like a blow the top off the defense kind of passing attack Um so I’m gonna say fiction here I mean obviously I’d love to be wrong but that’s just kind of where my mind goes because like what we’ve seen from Penn State so far is that

Andrew:

00:47:22.89 – 00:47:41.03

um they don’t take those long shots that often Allah you know USC and like Caleb throwing to Jordan Addison another very talented wide receivers who have breakaway speed and stuff like that Like I don’t think that without um parker we can get to that number

Vince:

00:47:41.04 – 00:47:52.35

I’m actually gonna be the optimist here I’m gonna say fact and I have a lot of confidence in the speed of Mitchell Tinsley and keandre lambert he’s really beginning to shine

Vince:

00:47:52.78 – 00:48:14.66

You have the tight ends who are doing awesome and I think this is just going to be a really difficult defense to run on So I think you might see Franklin get away from the running game if it’s not working early on and I think he might be putting the game on Shawn’s shoulders here So I’m gonna I’m gonna say fiction and we get over 300 yards

Vince:

00:48:15.23 – 00:48:25.26

Alright moving on to my kind of opposite point here without Joey Porter The secondary can hold cam arising under 250 pass yards

Andrew:

00:48:25.27 – 00:48:43.5

fact Yeah the secondary is still very good even without Joey and I mean we’ve seen Kalen King and johnnie Dixon do very good things as the starting corners and we’ve got enough bodies in the secondary uh to make the most of those opportunities um kind of limit those those uh passing threats So I’m gonna say fact

Vince:

00:48:44.49 – 00:48:55.58

Yeah I’ll say fact as well I really like our secondary I just think that uh you know the physicality of Utah is going to be really difficult to deal with I feel like they’re going to

Vince:

00:48:56.18 – 00:49:03.48

really look at michigan’s film and try to do what michigan did So I’m gonna say fact there as well Yeah

Andrew:

00:49:03.49 – 00:49:13.14

especially without dalton Kincaid like you know with them with him being there their top pass catcher I think that um I think we can pretty comfortably say this

Vince:

00:49:13.15 – 00:49:19.16

alright last factor fiction of the season The Rose Bowl is the best bowl game Yeah

Andrew:

00:49:19.16 – 00:49:24.29

I mean it’s a fact like it’s they literally call it the granddaddy of them all for a reason Like it’s

Andrew:

00:49:24.47 – 00:49:45.25

um it’s been the home of such iconic games um you know you just look back on uh like texas USC um you can even point to like Georgia Oklahoma in that crazy multi overtime game in the playoffs a couple of years ago Um There’s been a couple of epic moments for Penn State Even

Andrew:

00:49:45.41 – 00:50:00.41

We could look at like the 94 Rose Bowl where Kijana Carter just ran all over the Oregon defense And I mean it’s just been the site of just so many um great football moments that I you know it’s really hard to compare any other ball game to it

Vince:

00:50:01.0 – 00:50:16.94

Yeah I I agree There there’s no game better than them all You know the granddaddy of them all And you know this is an event that at one point had chariot races Like this is like the most bad as coolest like event from sunny California like

Vince:

00:50:17.49 – 00:50:21.59

beautiful weather year round So there there’s nothing better than the Rose Bowl So

Andrew:

00:50:21.6 – 00:50:37.35

right Which I still I still maintain my point where they should they should reinstate the chariot races but just have the coaches of each team do the chariot race and whoever wins Said chariot race should start the game with a touchdown advantage

Vince:

00:50:37.36 – 00:50:43.22

Yeah that that would be fun or you know get to choose if they got the ball first or not instead of the coin flip at the very right

Andrew:

00:50:43.23 – 00:50:44.61

 Right

Andrew:

00:50:44.93 – 00:50:49.4

Yeah James franklin has won the chariot race and has decided to defer

Vince:

00:50:51.96 – 00:50:52.64

 That would be so

Andrew:

00:50:52.64 – 00:50:54.42

 entertaining All

Vince:

00:50:54.42 – 00:51:00.44

right we are at our final communion prediction of the season Andrew what do you got for us

Andrew:

00:51:01.18 – 00:51:28.69

So like I mentioned earlier um My community prediction has to do with the pass rush on Penn state side And my community prediction is that the defense is going to set cam arising four times in this game Um So far this season the most number of sacks that cam has taken in a single game is too so my prediction is that this Penn state defense is gonna double that So I’m predicting that uh Penn State is going to put them on the ground four times

Vince:

00:51:29.45 – 00:51:42.8

Yeah if that happens you’re looking at the lines having a good chance to win this football game My communion prediction I think that our tight ends will combine for over 100 yards receiving and have at least two touchdowns

Andrew:

00:51:42.81 – 00:51:52.31

Cool Yeah I can I can see that happening Um You know just like I said I think that they’re gonna be prime red zone targets Um You know just because

Andrew:

00:51:52.51 – 00:52:01.69

with them being such big bodies and with Utah’s rush defense being so stout like I think that uh they’re gonna be kind of like the one A one B and one C targets

Vince:

00:52:02.26 – 00:52:05.77

final game score prediction What do you got

Andrew:

00:52:05.78 – 00:52:10.74

I know that we’re going to disagree on this but this is this is where I’m at

Andrew:

00:52:11.05 – 00:52:34.56

So I think that this is gonna be a hyper physical game Um It’s really no surprise Uh I think that Utah has consistently shown themselves to be a tough physical team Um really taken on the identity of their head coach Um I think that Penn State is going to have to be very physical themselves to win this game Um they’re just gonna have to have the mindset of rising to that occasion rising to that challenge Um

Andrew:

00:52:34.76 – 00:52:54.18

and you know like I mentioned earlier I think that you know with the exception of the michigan game Penn State has done a good job of rising to the level of their competition at key moments Like we even talked about with the Ohio State game Um and you know more than anything else I guess I would say is I believe in Penn State’s playmakers I think that

Andrew:

00:52:54.34 – 00:53:14.15

you know Penn State has a lot of options to turn to um even with the with the departure of parker Washington to injury as well as the NFL draft you know I think that guys like DeAndre Lambert smith have stepped up Um we’ve seen improved tight end play from Tyler Warren and theo johnson has obviously become a huge passing threat and

Andrew:

00:53:14.29 – 00:53:35.03

um yeah we have the two headed monster in the running back with K Tron and nick So I think that Penn State has a lot of options to turn to and I think that Sean is an experience and savvy enough guy to make the most of them Um so with that said my prediction is that Penn State is going to win the Rose Bowl by the score of 27 to 24

Vince:

00:53:35.56 – 00:54:01.92

That’s a good prediction Uh when I was getting ready for the pot I definitely did go back and forth quite a bit on the outcome of who I thought was going to win Uh you know I really liked a lot of things that happened in november I really like the aggressiveness of the pass rush and creating all those negative plays and turnovers I really liked that We got the tight ends more involved more passes

Vince:

00:54:02.11 – 00:54:13.43

the grinding attack rushing attack got so much better Um the receivers did a decent job you know without parker Washington However at the end of the day

Vince:

00:54:14.32 – 00:54:43.81

uh Utah just has a lot of quality wins they have two wins over number seven USC they almost beat stanford and stanford they almost beat Oregon on the road Uh they beat Oregon state you know who’s uh you know had a really good record So you know just kind of with with all those things combined I’m not losing any home games or neutral site games I just I had to go with Utah and this one just because of that

Vince:

00:54:44.12 – 00:55:02.22

You know pure grit and physicality like that Yasmin touchdown catch reception where he just would not go down That would that that play just is like okay I feel like this team is just gonna be a little bit better So I went with 28 20 for Utah winning this game

Andrew:

00:55:03.2 – 00:55:05.01

 Gotcha Well we’ll

Vince:

00:55:05.01 – 00:55:08.03

be frustrated for another you know another year

Andrew:

00:55:08.03 – 00:55:09.71

 that another

Vince:

00:55:09.71 – 00:55:14.92

close Rose bowl loss you know with you know USC and now Utah

Andrew:

00:55:14.93 – 00:55:26.75

right Well um obviously vince I hope I’m gonna be right and you’re gonna be wrong in this scenario but I respect your your prediction and your thought process Nonetheless

Vince:

00:55:27.25 – 00:55:33.44

I was I was told once at least I was consistent and it was consistently wrong So

Vince:

00:55:34.06 – 00:55:37.87

I would be happy to be consistently wrong

Andrew:

00:55:38.63 – 00:55:42.74

Good stuff though man Um what else you got on your plate

Vince:

00:55:42.75 – 00:55:53.9

You know not much just staying busy for the holiday is going to be going home and visiting family So I’ve just been kind of scrambling and kind of getting gifts and all that together How about you

Andrew:

00:55:53.91 – 00:56:06.87

Yeah kind of the same Um are you somebody who likes to get all of your holiday gift shopping out of the way earlier Are you kind of like a procrastinator Like you like to do everything in like the last week week and a half

Vince:

00:56:07.53 – 00:56:20.59

So I do a little bit of both So typically I’ll try to find some good deals on gifts on like black friday through cyber monday I’ll try to do as much as I can during that time period

Vince:

00:56:20.98 – 00:56:49.54

Um however you know whatever doesn’t get done in that time period I usually procrastinate and then I’m finding like you know some other people’s gifts in the last uh last week or two before I go home So like you know a family member who is coming to like our christmas um I might not typically come and but it’s coming that year and then I have to like oh I got to figure out a gift for this person So you know it’s just kind of uh it’s it’s an ever changing environment

Andrew:

00:56:50.92 – 00:57:07.78

well said uh yeah I’m kind of the same way Um I try to you know be as proactive as possible but um there’s always always seems like there’s things that slipped through the cracks and you know got to make sure that your um well prepared but you got any like um

Vince:

00:57:07.79 – 00:57:08.96

 holiday

Andrew:

00:57:08.96 – 00:57:14.48

traditions or anything like that that you’re gonna be doing this upcoming weekend

Vince:

00:57:14.95 – 00:57:40.68

Yeah we uh we typically have a dinner thanksgiving eve typically lasagna So I’m a big lasagna guy and then we open presents christmas morning and you know kinda have dinner and chill around the house all day and we usually have like NBA basketball on uh we’ll have some football this year so maybe watch some of the NFL football and uh christmas eve will will definitely be watching the birds

Vince:

00:57:40.99 – 00:57:42.09

 Yeah

Andrew:

00:57:42.09 – 00:57:57.31

with bated breath since the Jalen hurts sprained shoulder news had come out So you know I’m like while I want to say that I’m confident in Gardner Minshew I definitely would feel a lot better if Jalen hurts was behind center

Vince:

00:57:57.86 – 00:58:10.89

Hey I mean the last time the birds were a number one seed uh and the starting quarterback got her we won a Super bowl So maybe Minshew has some of that nick Foles uh you know swag in them

Andrew:

00:58:10.9 – 00:58:24.18

if the eagles managed to win a Super Bowl with Gardner Minshew at quarterback if this injury like lingers on or you know however severe it may be

Andrew:

00:58:24.35 – 00:58:50.06

um the eagles and the city of philadelphia just live in some kind of bizarro world because that is not the script for winning championships It’s not just like um having your Mvp caliber quarterback like play 90% of the games and then have your backup come in and and win everything through the playoffs Like that would that would be insane You know what’s um what’s interesting though about that whole thing is like

Andrew:

00:58:50.28 – 00:59:07.62

um before this game against the Bears you know there is a lot of discourse about um you know some notable people questioning Jalen hurts um legitimacy as like an MvP candidate We heard from the likes of chris Simms former giant who is now

Andrew:

00:59:07.78 – 00:59:24.96

um part of like the new york media as well as one of our own Michael Parsons kind of voicing some of his uh some of his questioning about um Jalen hurts as an M V P Guy So you know it in kind of like a weird way we might see the

Andrew:

00:59:24.97 – 00:59:42.23

kind of play itself out because you know their whole thing is that you know this eagles offense is so well rounded and stack that you can put pretty much any quarterback back there and they’ll have success So um you know and kind of like a like a sick twisted way we’re going to see if they’re right

Vince:

00:59:42.24 – 00:59:50.82

Yeah And uh kind of my my question or I guess response to people who are hating on Jalen hurts is

Vince:

00:59:51.23 – 01:00:05.9

um the only guy that’s different on their offense is a J Brown like all the rest of the team is like the same as last year like no new guys it’s just we replace Jalen Reagor with a J Brown and now it’s amazing So

Vince:

01:00:06.53 – 01:00:08.01

 while um

Vince:

01:00:08.52 – 01:00:19.22

you know Jalen Reagor is not very good and A J Brown is awesome You have to credit Jalen hurts his development in the pocket and his decision making it’s just been incredible this year

Andrew:

01:00:19.9 – 01:00:39.5

Yeah absolutely And you know it’s it’s funny because you know you’re always gonna like see these naysayers out there um even in like former players who were like on radio or doing their own podcast or whatever but then you hear just as many if not significantly more guys who kind of fit that same description

Andrew:

01:00:39.65 – 01:01:00.83

just talk about that pure development that you just talked about Like if you listen to um Merrill Reese and Mike quick on the radio broadcast for the eagles I mean mike quick is always talking about Jalen hurts is like processing ability and his uh you know kind of his decision making and things like that and how dramatically improved it is from

Andrew:

01:01:01.04 – 01:01:24.11

um last year and things like that and it’s like you know like if you want to call him a home or sure but Mike Quick is a is a hall of fame wide receiver for the Eagles you know I’m going to trust his his um take on Jalen hurts you know he watches him every single week and also looks at adam and practice every single week over chris Simms who is just gonna be looking at like stat sheets and stuff like that

Vince:

01:01:24.55 – 01:01:51.42

Yeah and just just the way he carries himself is just kind of like textbook of not only what like successful athletes do but like just successful human beings in general like he’s so locked in and so disciplined like he could literally do anything with his life that he wanted Like if he had no interest in football like I feel like he’s a guy who could be like oh I’ll be an engineer or like a doctor like whatever and he’ll just kind of do it like you know just

Vince:

01:01:51.68 – 01:02:12.05

he has that you know kind of mental you know ability So yeah he his development has really been incredible and I think I saw a stat the other day was and I think it was something like Jalen hurts his passing yards against like the titans or something and was higher than chris simms career passing yards in the

Andrew:

01:02:12.05 – 01:02:14.02

 NFL

Andrew:

01:02:14.93 – 01:02:15.8

 So

Vince:

01:02:15.81 – 01:02:22.3

I think that’s a good response to his shenanigans Yeah that’s like the 40th best quarterback in the NFL

Andrew:

01:02:22.31 – 01:02:23.02

 Oh yeah

Vince:

01:02:23.82 – 01:02:25.22

 25

Andrew:

01:02:25.23 – 01:02:37.25

Yeah Um it’s just it’s just insane you know So I mean like it’s kind of like like almost like a lose lose situation because it’s like um you know either

Vince:

01:02:37.26 – 01:02:38.14

 if

Andrew:

01:02:38.15 – 01:02:41.94

they’re going to be rolling with Gardner Minshew in this game the reason we’re gonna win

Andrew:

01:02:42.13 – 01:02:57.84

and guys like chris Simms are gonna be proven somewhat right especially if like Gardner Minshew has a big day um or he’s gonna be proven wrong and the eagles are gonna lose So it’s not really like a great thing for us either way

Vince:

01:02:57.85 – 01:03:05.12

Yeah and he’s like a solid starting quarterback So like he’s not like it’s not like we’re throwing uh

Vince:

01:03:05.32 – 01:03:09.51

I’m trying to think of like a bad quarterback Clayton thorson in there or something like

Andrew:

01:03:10.11 – 01:03:11.23

 yeah

Vince:

01:03:11.24 – 01:03:13.06

 we’re not throwing Nathan Peterman

Vince:

01:03:14.4 – 01:03:20.17

Oh man can you believe the Bills went from him to like josh allen Like just the jump

Andrew:

01:03:20.18 – 01:03:20.78

 I mean

Andrew:

01:03:21.69 – 01:03:51.55

yeah it was funny in that one game like he came out for like that one play and it was just like a terribly thrown ball So yeah but uh now regardless uh looking forward to some some birds football and um I’m gonna be watching also uh because I’ll be with my girlfriend’s family on christmas Eve we’re gonna be watching um the Steelers versus the Raiders and it’s the 50th anniversary of the immaculate reception which was caught by another Penn Stater

Andrew:

01:03:51.74 – 01:04:02.88

Vince Tell me you know who caught the immaculate reception Yes correct So so yeah we’re gonna be watching um two teams under 500 battle it out

Vince:

01:04:02.89 – 01:04:03.92

 in uh

Andrew:

01:04:03.93 – 01:04:11.03

in the nighttime football But yeah so should be a good time But anything else that you want to discuss man

Vince:

01:04:11.56 – 01:04:14.15

Yeah any bowl games you’re interested in watching

Andrew:

01:04:14.16 – 01:04:31.68

Well I mean obviously all the New Year’s six bowl games um you know I think the college football playoff just has like a special level of intrigue um this year just because it is like you know kind of flipped from two sec teams to two Big 10 teams Um So I’m sure that

Andrew:

01:04:31.84 – 01:04:51.3

you know the the the administration of the Big 10 are going to be kind of licking their chops to kind of see if they can get an all Big 10 national championship game in there because that is just like prime scenario for them Um But you know I think overall there’s gonna be some other really good games out there like I think Tennessee versus Clemson is going to be really good um

Andrew:

01:04:51.61 – 01:05:15.67

because I think you know Clemson um pretty obviously is gonna be rolling with Cape club nick at quarterback since DJ we galilee um has entered the transfer portal So I think that’ll be a good one Um and yeah you know I think that you know to be honest I think USC and Tulane also has some entry with the uncertainty around um newly minted Heisman trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams injury

Andrew:

01:05:15.89 – 01:05:23.1

Uh So you know I think that’ll be um interesting to see So you know I think that there’s a there’s a good crop of games in the second half of the bowl season

Vince:

01:05:23.11 – 01:05:45.07

Yeah there’s a lot of different matchups I think uh you know Oregon north Carolina I think you’re probably gonna see Oregon crush it during that one florida state will probably crush Oklahoma I think texas Washington could be a really fun game to watch Washington had a really good season Texas had some tough close losses So I think it’ll be fun to watch

Vince:

01:05:45.33 – 01:06:08.89

Maryland anti state Uh Some big 10 HCC going at each other That could be good You got pit in U C L A So you’ll see some future big 10 teams playing You have Tennessee Clemson That would be good I think Notre dame and south Carolina could be a really good one especially with spencer rattler playing so well recently I think

Andrew:

01:06:08.89 – 01:06:09.22

 that

Vince:

01:06:10.05 – 01:06:13.73

nick Saban is gonna have a chance to

Andrew:

01:06:13.92 – 01:06:15.19

 prove

Vince:

01:06:15.19 – 01:06:42.03

himself if he should be a college football playoff team as Alabama plays Kansas state So if they give them like a whuppin then you know they definitely make a better case I think you’re going to see michigan beating up TCU and Georgia beating up Ohio state that’s just kind of how I see it rolling and then you have a couple of big 10 sec games that could be good and they rely on Quest Bowl you have

Vince:

01:06:42.19 – 01:07:00.95

the align I going off against number 20 Mississippi State I’m sure they’re going to be playing really inspired with the passing of coach leach and number 17 L S U Versus Purdue in the Citrus Bowl Uh Andrew who do you think’s gonna win those matchups and Big 10 versus sec

Andrew:

01:07:00.96 – 01:07:11.73

I think the sec is probably going to come out on top in both of those games I think that L S U Um is just uh like Purdue was overmatched in that game I think L S U Just has

Andrew:

01:07:11.93 – 01:07:37.83

way too many playmakers for them to kind of keep up and I think you’re right in that Mississippi State is going to be playing pretty inspired like they’re gonna want to kind of rally around each other and uh you know kind of get this win um in memory of coach leach and I mean like Illinois is no like slash of a team this year but I think that those intangible factors are um going to ultimately propel them to victory

Vince:

01:07:38.24 – 01:08:03.08

Yeah I think Perdue is just overmatched against L S U So I think that will probably be a blowout kinda like Purdue is blown out to michigan in the Big 10 championship game I think I think the Illinois Mississippi state game is going to be a close one Illinois is a pretty good team but they’ve they’ve been kind of a hard team to figure out this year like at one point in the year they looked really great and then you see them losing to like

Vince:

01:08:03.28 – 01:08:26.38

michigan state kind of out of nowhere So um definitely a tough team to figure out some other big 10 games We’ll be seeing Wisconsin will will play off against Oklahoma State I like the badgers in that one You have Minnesota and Syracuse Syracuse had no case season but I’ll take Minnesota in that one

Vince:

01:08:26.99 – 01:08:33.77

and then you have Iowa Kentucky will live uh will be is he playing in this game

Andrew:

01:08:33.78 – 01:08:36.78

I think so I haven’t seen anything about him opting out

Vince:

01:08:37.89 – 01:08:58.75

Yeah so that would be interesting to see uh you know how he does against their defense because typically when he’s played good defense is his passing numbers have not been great So you know we’ll be interesting to see if a Penn Stater can uh you know get a win you know two wins within one weekend

Andrew:

01:08:58.76 – 01:09:05.95

Right Did you see the recent quote from kate McNamara recording Iowa by the way

Vince:

01:09:06.33 – 01:09:09.46

 Oh no I didn’t wasn’t like Yeah

Andrew:

01:09:09.47 – 01:09:18.81

so you know that now former michigan quarterback has decided to transfer to Iowa right like your speed on that

Vince:

01:09:19.33 – 01:09:25.64

I was not busy you know just life But uh yeah So that’s that’s really interesting

Andrew:

01:09:25.65 – 01:09:45.41

isn’t it Yeah I mean this is a quarterback who has literally played in the college football playoff and he decided to transfer to Iowa and you know we’ve we’ve talked enough about Iowa just being this anemic offense so far this season and so he is going to that program and you know like

Vince:

01:09:45.65 – 01:09:46.49

 expectedly

Andrew:

01:09:46.49 – 01:10:10.01

so has gotten a lot of comments about this just about just being like well why are you just like throwing away your career as a quarterback if you’re going to Iowa like and just basically ragging on the offense and I’m not gonna say his quote verbatim because it is a little explicit So I’m gonna paraphrase here But he said something along the lines of please saying please keep saying that it’s the crappiest offense in all of college football Please keep saying that

Andrew:

01:10:10.14 – 01:10:25.13

And a lot of people have kind of meme to that and said okay yeah we will because that’s what we believe So it’s just funny You know the guy the guy is like trying to go to bat for his new his new offense and everybody’s just like no you’re not you’re not fooling anybody here

Vince:

01:10:25.68 – 01:10:35.02

Well best of luck to cade McNamara when he when he comes to Happy Valley this year they’ll be playing Iowa in october That’s right

Andrew:

01:10:35.03 – 01:10:40.86

Yeah don’t worry we promise we’ll only sack you like six or seven times in that one

Vince:

01:10:41.68 – 01:10:46.87

and maybe maybe we’ll be loud enough that we can force a false start on the first play of the game

Andrew:

01:10:46.88 – 01:10:51.7

That’s right Yeah No because I mean among other things like we owe those guys so

Vince:

01:10:52.06 – 01:10:53.25

 yes we do

Andrew:

01:10:53.76 – 01:10:54.74

 anything else

Vince:

01:10:54.75 – 01:11:16.58

Yeah I know we talked about christmas gifts so if you want if you need are kind of like us and procrastinate with some people on your gift list You can always go to 90 blues dot com and pick up some items from you know the merch store They can’t we can’t guarantee that they’ll get there in time for christmas but hey if you see someone later maybe around New

Vince:

01:11:16.59 – 01:11:38.68
