Maggie:

00:00:18.79 – 00:00:34.12

Good question So I guess going into the game walking into the Bryce Jordan Center I was thinking like man if Penn State pulls out a win this would be a game that we could look back to at the end of the season and really

Maggie:

00:00:34.82 – 00:00:58.41

I guess pinpoint when the Nittany Lions were able to really step up and close out tough games and really compete against a good team like Michigan State So I was really optimistic that this would be like a defining moment for the Nittany Lions in this season and unfortunately fell a little bit short felt like we were

Maggie:

00:00:58.65 – 00:01:11.26

At times back in the same pattern we were in last year So I had high hopes and it was a fun game to watch But in the end I was like Oh man we are back in 2021

Vince:

00:01:11.82 – 00:01:35.89

Yeah and you’re absolutely right that the that did that was one of the vibes I got from this game as well than any lines were extremely competitive for the majority of this game And in the last few minutes it just seemed to slip away going into this game I did think it was going to be a close one I did pick Michigan State to win by four points in my final prediction

Vince:

00:01:36.41 – 00:01:39.62

 Um however

Vince:

00:01:40.17 – 00:02:05.23

1st 10 minutes uh many lines they were they were lights out moving the ball offensively The looks they were getting were such good looks but they were not capitalizing on the possessions that they they were getting You had somewhat missed wide open threes tons of miss layups tonight right around the RM which which is where you want to be in

Vince:

00:02:05.73 – 00:02:30.09

You know coach screws that in his press conference said you run offense to get layups and open catch and shoot threes and they got a lot of those especially early in the game However they did not capitalize The threes were falling early They were seven of 18 in the first half which is a good shooting percentage That’s right around where you want to be That’s close to that 40% mark of a good three point shooting team

Vince:

00:02:30.54 – 00:02:35.8

However nothing else was falling inside the ark nothing was going

Vince:

00:02:36.41 – 00:03:02.1

Uh so Penn State dig the first four minutes It was 44 after the media time out and you’re looking at a 40 40 basketball game there So that that would have been extremely low scoring It felt like a lid was over the basket all night and nothing would go in Penn State finally got some things wrong and they got a 10 point lead It was 16 to 6 early in the first half and

Vince:

00:03:02.45 – 00:03:30.17

I remember saying hey this is ours to win if we keep having the same defensive intensity Uh you know we’re going to run away with this because our shots are going to start following eventually However I was very wrong and the it ended up being tied at halftime 35 to 35 in the second half especially you know in the waiting minutes that the intensity was not there for Penn State He and um it really seemed late in the game when

Vince:

00:03:30.56 – 00:04:00.24

Seth alone you got that carry called on him you could just feel the energy in the building drop Penn State did fight back and you know they got a steal on defense they gotta stop and then they got a good opportunity missed another layup and you could just hear hear the crowd booing you know because of the refs and you know that very controversial call and at that moment in the game you just knew it was over with with a few minutes left to go Um what were some

Vince:

00:04:00.45 – 00:04:05.34

takeaways you had as the game changed from the first half to the second half

Maggie:

00:04:05.35 – 00:04:29.24

Yeah so I think when we I guess I came into this game thinking that Michigan state was a little more vulnerable than we thought especially after watching them lose to northwestern right over I think was over the weekend And that was that was a really exciting game to watch and a really fun one to root for

Maggie:

00:04:29.45 – 00:04:48.71

um Northwestern pulling off this big upset And so I guess even through the first half when it was so evenly matched I was like wow we just saw um Michigan State lose a close game to a opponent that was ranked lower than them Maybe we can capitalize on this see this happen again

Maggie:

00:04:49.26 – 00:04:55.22

Um and I guess I that momentum shift really

Maggie:

00:04:55.85 – 00:05:20.81

really in the second half was like wow the Nittany Lions just can’t really string together a nice nice couple of minutes where they’re really in control of the ball where they’re really setting the tempo for the game It felt like they were um I guess just kind of reactive I was really hoping that they could come out come out strong in the second half and just sort of take control of the game

Maggie:

00:05:21.21 – 00:05:41.51

So that was a little disappointing especially because we had high hopes going into it and to have seen all those early shots you know early in the first half that were were definitely the right look And I think in a lot of a lot of the shots that didn’t go in it was the right shot and the player should have taken it

Maggie:

00:05:42.06 – 00:05:57.53

but to not go in is tough And so we were kind of expecting like alright those same looks that we were getting they’ll start to fall in they’ll um keep shooting but we just didn’t see that kind of momentum shift that we were really hoping for

Vince:

00:05:58.3 – 00:06:18.87

Yeah and in the second half penn State was only one of nine from three and when you’re a three point shooting team that’s not gonna cut it you’re not gonna win any games in the Big 10 that that way for that matter So the ball movement wasn’t near as good in the second half a lot of the offense was just Jalen Pickett driving and trying to back down the guard

Vince:

00:06:19.06 – 00:06:46.36

Um you know Coach Izzo said that you know he his goal was not to double Jalen pickett because he didn’t want our our shooters to knock down three So that was something that Coach Izzo kind of schemed to take away from us Uh the only guy he really planned to double was the center and he you know he said that created some blocks or some turnovers that you know they fumbled it got stolen or went out of bounds and those are things that would have been laid up So

Vince:

00:06:46.59 – 00:06:50.3

you know some good scheming by Michigan State and their defense and

Vince:

00:06:50.91 – 00:07:15.73

they had a lot of players that could score offensively and the you know the 1st 10 minutes of the game Um I thought that Andrew was going to be correct He picked Penn State to win this game Um however I felt like oh man I might be totally wrong uh picking Michigan State to win because those 1st 10 minutes they kind of looked like that team that lost another day by 18 They looked like a team who could lose two

Vince:

00:07:16.14 – 00:07:39.38

you know Northwestern which is usually one of the teams that is in the bottom of the conference in the big 10 and early in that game I’m like wow we’re gonna win This Uh definitely had had those vibes lots of high energy from the crowd in the arena You know you have the teas for threes they were throwing t shirts everywhere and you know that just didn’t manifest through the entire 40 minutes of the game And

Vince:

00:07:39.6 – 00:08:02.38

like you said when it was close penn State could not get a run So whenever we scored a basket uh Michigan State would respond or you know they would go ahead and we would do you know we would even it but we just couldn’t get the run going We couldn’t just play lockdown defense for two or three minutes And that was that was really difficult to watch You know just

Maggie:

00:08:03.22 – 00:08:03.43

 you

Vince:

00:08:03.43 – 00:08:17.93

know see Andrew Funk and Miles Dredd knock out those opportunities Miles Dredd was one of the few guys that was on tonight Uh he was uh you know two or four from downtown and three or four from the free throw line So he you know he had some nice points tonight

Vince:

00:08:18.44 – 00:08:44.89

Um Andrew Funk didn’t get many opportunities He was one for four um oh three from downtown So yeah he wasn’t getting many looks early in the game He had that first shot of the game and hit the side of the backboard and we were just like like you know not a great start Um and that’s that’s I feel like that shot almost uh ended up being like the theme of the game Penn State could not get anything going offensively And

Vince:

00:08:45.04 – 00:09:13.02

I think part of where Penn State is seeing these struggles part of its size but part of it is we’re not getting enough production from the center position and I think we need to do more to get cabbage I’m more involved He did have a few good looks tonight but just could not cash in on those opportunities Uh he was one of five from the field so he had two points of two from the free throw line

Vince:

00:09:13.44 – 00:09:37.21

which is another thing that killed us tonight We’re only 12 from 18 So we got a lot of good opportunities but didn’t cash in I know my junior high basketball coach would not have been happy with us shooting 67% So you know Coach Cruz definitely I’m sure was not happy as well and you know I think you know captain when he’s playing I thought he played pretty well tonight and

Vince:

00:09:38.1 – 00:09:47.06

and then I felt like in the second half we didn’t see him kind of going after it and taking those opportunities What did you think about cabin tonight

Maggie:

00:09:47.07 – 00:10:04.87

Yeah I agree I thought that early in the game he looked great and I think he was really really shutting Michigan State down defensively in the paint in the low post because we were just saying before this that Michigan State is a

Maggie:

00:10:05.07 – 00:10:12.72

tall team but they don’t have anyone who’s like so so tall that it’s like wow that guy is really tall and

Maggie:

00:10:13.58 – 00:10:26.57

um and so cuba was I think and sometimes in the different combinations he would be the tallest player out there and he was able to shut down some Michigan State

Maggie:

00:10:27.19 – 00:10:51.65

players trying to make moves in the low post And so I was you know I think I really got flickers of greatness from him defensively early in this game and then I guess I just wished I hadn’t seen more of him through the second half of the game because it seemed like you yeah had such a great first half defensively and then

Maggie:

00:10:52.51 – 00:10:54.86

just didn’t really see that in the second

Vince:

00:10:54.86 – 00:10:56.19

 half He’s

Maggie:

00:10:56.19 – 00:11:20.18

someone that I’m you know I think we’re all we’re all really rooting for him and we see so much potential as he continues to grow and develop under coach truth that he’s someone that um I think we were putting a lot of expectations on him He came in here Um so highly ranked and what everyone was so excited to have him

Maggie:

00:11:20.47 – 00:11:35.86

join the team So there’s definitely a lot of a lot of expectations on him and you know we’re seeing him in a learning curve but I think we’re all all really rooting for him and really excited to watch him continue to fill some big shoes

Vince:

00:11:36.38 – 00:11:53.82

Yeah and this was a thing where he got a lot of good looks tonight His decision making was very good He but he was only one of five He just didn’t cash in Um There was one time where I thought he had a good look and should have just went straight up with it but instead he brought the ball out of the ground and

Vince:

00:11:54.03 – 00:12:13.62

before he went up and that enabled the defender to contest the shot better So I think that’s something they’ll they’ll watch film and the work on practice Um However there were some things that his teammates said that I found really interesting in the in the postgame conference Jalen Pickett you just gotta love his leadership He’s

Vince:

00:12:14.13 – 00:12:27.44

he is the most accountable guy I know just based off of his attitude that he’s going to you know have a job in the N B A Uh after the game you know he was being interviewed and

Vince:

00:12:28.32 – 00:12:55.98

and the reporter said hey yeah it’s one game and you guys have a lot more opportunities down the road So it’s all good right And he’s just flat out said no it’s not good this our performance was unacceptable and it needs to be fixed like now Like so he’s like we’re gonna get the film and we’re gonna get better So I thought that was one of the best comments I heard It seems like this team has a lot of good leadership for accountability but he also mentioned that

Vince:

00:12:56.16 – 00:13:18.85

you know he he might might need to be a little more accountable and try to lift up a little more so when he’s you know getting his head down him you know him or Caleb Dorsey who aren’t quite as experienced uh you know he might need to lift lift him up a little more and you know try to get him going because you know obviously coach is gonna be hard on him and

Vince:

00:13:19.08 – 00:13:36.91

you know everyone in the media is going to be hard on because he’s you know so highly recruited and media like us to you know we’re going to be hard on him but we have to remember at the end of the day this is an 18 year old kid and uh he’s playing you know with with a lot of sixth year seniors and Jalen Pickett talked about

Vince:

00:13:37.31 – 00:13:51.07

you know the difference between playing with John Harrell last year and he said him and john just you know had that same chemistry of based off of where the defense was uh John would just move to the spot where Jalen wanted to get him the ball

Vince:

00:13:51.29 – 00:14:12.93

and you know that that just enabled the offense to flow so much more smoothly and john Harris seen a lot of Division one basketball very experience and now we’re kind of having the polar opposite is we have a kid who this is his first you know big 10 basketball game and only his third ever power five basketball game and

Vince:

00:14:13.54 – 00:14:39.53

you know this is yeah hopefully these things change and they make those adjustments Uh you know the psychology of sport is really important and having that mindset of not getting down you know you gotta kind of weather the storm because everyone’s going to go through rough patches That is one of the kind of the great things about basketball It’s it’s almost like golf where um you can golf for hours and hours and hours

Vince:

00:14:39.96 – 00:14:47.87

And then sometimes you you when you swing through you like hit the ground and the ball goes like 50 yards and basketball just seems that way sometimes like

Vince:

00:14:48.39 – 00:15:03.35

you can hit everything in practice and then you get in a game time situation and the shots just don’t fall So you know this team is gonna have to find a way to weather the storm because with these three games that we lost

Vince:

00:15:04.16 – 00:15:21.02

to close one’s to Virginia Tech Clemson and double overtime this last one Uh they have to find a way to weather the storm and they need to play consistently for a long period of time and and figure out how to go on a run late in ballgames

Maggie:

00:15:21.73 – 00:15:31.91

Yeah absolutely I think too like we are we’re so excited about CUba but we also are really seeing I think some

Maggie:

00:15:32.73 – 00:15:37.65

some players that are emerging in really exciting ways like today

Maggie:

00:15:38.2 – 00:15:44.0

I feel like I noticed Cameron Winter more than I have in previous games I think he

Maggie:

00:15:44.59 – 00:15:57.56

he just looked really strong out there today and he looked really consistent and I think he had some good looks I don’t have any any stats to back this up This is this is just vibes and perceptions But

Maggie:

00:15:58.12 – 00:16:27.44

I was like wow I’m noticing Cameron Winter um standing out on court So you know he’s I think he’s an exciting one to watch Um I also was glad to see miles Dredd get back in his groove a little bit after some some weeks where he was just really struggling to connect on his um his signature three So glad to see him getting back in the saddle Not um

Maggie:

00:16:27.64 – 00:16:49.46

you know not being scared of shots really continuing to just go for it go for the three when he has it So glad to see that out of Miles Dredd Um excited to I guess notice Cameron Winter really making a name for himself on the court What about you Vince anyone stand out to you today that we don’t normally talk about

Vince:

00:16:49.54 – 00:16:53.03

Winter has been on a really good streak lately He

Vince:

00:16:53.34 – 00:17:12.74

I believe he had 23 points in their game against Clemson last week and was 11 from 12 from the free throw line So he had a really good uh night from the line in that game He was also to to tonight So he you know he’s doing well there He’s almost the most confident player I have in those situations from the line

Vince:

00:17:13.62 – 00:17:25.99

You know based off of our percentages have been uh he had a good game He was 33 of eight for 10 points He played pretty well I thought he had a good night Um

Vince:

00:17:26.77 – 00:17:53.14

you know Miles Dredd forgot who wears the number two doesn’t take many two point shots So it almost makes you wonder if he takes any twos in practice But yeah it was nice to see him kind of kind of getting the group tonight and knock down some threes He’s been doing that for this is his fifth year at Penn State and he’s going to be very missed next year He’s a great player and you know great vocal leader on the bench And

Vince:

00:17:54.02 – 00:18:19.49

yeah things were things were challenging for the Nittany Lions tonight If he looked at the Spartans Tyson walker had a nice game He had 14 points 6 to 15 Jack Joey Hauser had a double double he had 12 points and 15 rebounds and speaking of rebounds I had a lot of rebounds today was Jalen Pickett and he was just battling 16 of them were on the defensive end

Vince:

00:18:19.91 – 00:18:34.64

Um he got 17 rebounds for a guard that is just completely insane grab that many rebounds Um so I think this is another area where Penn State needs to improve because they were beat by five

Vince:

00:18:35.28 – 00:19:00.01

in the rebounding battle They lost 33 to 38 that’s something that they need to improve and they need to get better and be more physical you know especially in these big 10 games you also had um AJ Hoge art and in the 1st 10 minutes uh we were saying oh wow they don’t seem to have a have a star And you know A J Hogarth was that guy He just got to the rim

Vince:

00:19:00.32 – 00:19:14.44

and Penn State did not have an answer to stop him on the broadcast He’s often called the maestro uh just running the offense and creating shots for his teammates and he’s able to get he got to the rim a lot tonight 8 16

Vince:

00:19:15.03 – 00:19:19.78

Yeah they’re they’re Stars played like Stars tonight and they hit their shots So

Vince:

00:19:20.56 – 00:19:48.68

and the Spartans were also better from the free throw line They were nine of 11 They were you know they beat Penn State Penn State was 12 18 Another stat where they’re far superior tonight was the three point line Uh They did not take many but when they did they cast in there were six for 14 That clip is 43% Uh They’re two point percent was the same Penn State ended up being only eight of 27 so that’s 30% That is not good

Vince:

00:19:49.08 – 00:20:01.08

from behind the arc And even overall from the field the percentage did not improve It was only 35% tonight and a lot of those were just miss layups two ft away from the basket And

Vince:

00:20:01.7 – 00:20:30.85

this was just one of those games where as a fan we we felt very frustrated or at least I felt very frustrated you know just having those close losses to Virginia Tech and Clemson and now with the Michigan State where we’re just neck and neck you know until those last you know 64 to 6 minutes were started to just slowly get out of our hands So it got from you know a tie game to around four points

Vince:

00:20:31.12 – 00:20:46.06

and then with 2.5 minutes it got to six points and Penn State could just not close the gap A lot of areas that the team can improve What is the biggest area where you’re looking for Penn State to improve when we watched them play again

Maggie:

00:20:46.59 – 00:20:48.28

 Oh I

Vince:

00:20:49.03 – 00:20:49.36

 let’s

Maggie:

00:20:49.36 – 00:20:53.02

see there’s a couple different areas but if I had to pick

Maggie:

00:20:53.74 – 00:20:55.76

 one I think

Maggie:

00:20:56.78 – 00:21:00.46

gosh I would really like to

Maggie:

00:21:01.18 – 00:21:09.46

see Penn state just consistently locked down on defense I think if we can

Maggie:

00:21:10.87 – 00:21:24.32

like we said you know hold a team to two or three minutes of really low scoring just that or hopefully no scoring just that sort of intensity on defense where we can really

Maggie:

00:21:24.88 – 00:21:47.65

um just lockdown make the other team work really hard for their shots burn through the clock and then hopefully you know have to throw up a sort of junk shot that we can grab the rebound on that I think that intensity and being able to clamp down on defense is something that I can really see the Nittany Lions getting um

Maggie:

00:21:48.02 – 00:21:55.2

you know if they can if they can get that together the offense will come So I think just being able to lock down for

Maggie:

00:21:56.26 – 00:22:00.71

minutes at a time on defense would be really exciting to see Yeah

Vince:

00:22:00.72 – 00:22:14.94

defensive energy is a big thing and that was something they did in the first four minutes of the game They played some lockdown defense They definitely felt the energy from the student section They showed up tonight They were allowed the student section did their job

Vince:

00:22:15.66 – 00:22:33.25

However you know they didn’t play complimentary on offense they didn’t cash in when things were going well So you know basketball when the highs are high you gotta go with it and you know when your defenses create creating turnovers you got to cash in on those opportunities And

Vince:

00:22:33.9 – 00:22:50.14

you know another thing that uh you know the guys mentioned in the post game that was Jalen pickett and Seth Lundy and you know coach shrews uh in his postgame was we are defensive energy cannot be dictated

Vince:

00:22:50.92 – 00:22:56.27

by whether we’re making buckets or not And kind of those last eight minutes of the game

Vince:

00:22:56.95 – 00:23:23.62

when you felt the momentum and energy kind of almost taken out of the arena Um you know the guys just said our defense was not up to the Penn state standard and you know Coach Drew said uh Michigan State was the gritty team at night which is kind of sad to see considering uh tonight was the night where they were giving away 2000 t shirts that said gritty not pretty So um definitely really uh

Vince:

00:23:24.23 – 00:23:43.06

disappointing to see But I do think Penn State will get better and they watch the film and they will learn from this You know if you look at the team last year they were you know losing games by 20 points to U mass non conference play and they they’ve been a lot more competitive

Vince:

00:23:43.62 – 00:23:56.32

you know early on and uh you know I think they will learn I I do like that you know coach shrews and the guys are mad about this because I’m hoping that will ignite a spark in this team and

Vince:

00:23:56.99 – 00:23:59.93

try to get them on the groove right on track So

Vince:

00:24:00.55 – 00:24:27.62

you know something that they talked about in the in the postgame or or about oh they were thinking about oh maybe I have them too amped up and we’re playing too tight and we need to play a little more free But also you have to be you know emotionally high enough that you’re engaged and kind of in that zone So I think um if they can you know find that flow a little bit better things are going to change a lot but I like the accountability of guys like Jalen Pickett when the reporter said

Vince:

00:24:28.02 – 00:24:49.49

um oh it’s all good You guys got more games to figure it out He said no it’s not okay We’re figuring out Now Coach Shrewsbury also made a comment you know thanking the fans and you know giving the credit to Michigan State He’s a class act But you know he made a comment that saying hey uh you know students don’t give up it’s one game stick with us I’m asking you to do that And he’s like

Vince:

00:24:49.79 – 00:25:12.71

you know maybe I should have spent less time you know asking people to come to the game and coach better So I really like that comment and his his press conference it shows that he’s accountable and he’s focused on himself getting better because that’s the only thing you can do You can you know only control you can control you can’t control Michigan State does tom Izzo also had some nice comments to say about this basketball team

Vince:

00:25:13.39 – 00:25:28.09

Um he said that I am going to be a penn State fan for the next three months because I don’t want to see them again Those were you know verbatim his words and you know he was really impressed with cabbage I the freshman So he’s

Vince:

00:25:28.67 – 00:25:55.11

he’s got the talent and you know once it things started clicking for him and he gets more confidence I feel like he needs a lot more confidence and once he just can’t be afraid to make mistakes and you know with how he was playing especially on the defensive end He had one incredible block I remember from the help side and I’m like that is why he is there and that’s why he needs to be in the game more really impressive I hope he starts getting some more minutes

Vince:

00:25:55.62 – 00:26:01.39

you know as the season develops But yeah so this was our only chance of the Spartans and

Vince:

00:26:01.94 – 00:26:17.42

it just really felt like we blew this opportunity But you know if coach is a Hall of Fame coach says we are a team that he does not want to see the rest of the year Um you know that’s a you know definitely very high praise and

Vince:

00:26:18.28 – 00:26:26.66

you know we’ll see how pence it responds that the schedule doesn’t get easier this weekend We’re at Illinois they are an incredible basketball team They just

Vince:

00:26:27.19 – 00:26:36.4

knocked off number two Texas last night and over time we caught a little bit of that game So things are not going to get easier for Penn state if they can

Vince:

00:26:36.93 – 00:27:00.0

win in Illinois I’ll be very surprised and impressed for sure because that’s a darn good basketball team I think Illinois is even a lot better than Michigan state but Michigan State is is not a slouch They lost to Gonzaga by one point and you know they beat Kentucky you don’t get in those situations if you’re not a good basketball team So

Vince:

00:27:00.76 – 00:27:26.5

really frustrating to watch It was just one of those games where the Nittany Lions couldn’t buy a bucket and the offense was just Jalen Pickett backing guys down in the post Coach Cruz said he was backing them down all the way to the concession stand pretty much and he was only five and 14 tonight So you know while he was doing a lot of great things he gave us eight assist he had 17 rebounds uh

Vince:

00:27:27.17 – 00:27:39.27

13 points on five of 14 shooting It just it just wasn’t good enough tonight the free throws weren’t good enough hitting we didn’t hit enough open threes and that ultimately ended up being our downfall

Maggie:

00:27:40.68 – 00:27:53.7

And I think I know I want to like wrap this show up on is that I think it must just be such a privilege to be coached by coach Shrewsbury He is just

Maggie:

00:27:54.32 – 00:28:14.97

so thoughtful and so caring and he I mean he loves his team and you can see that and the way he coaches when he is you know just creeping out onto the um onto the court and just he’s a coach that is so ready to go to bat for his guys He’s so willing to make

Maggie:

00:28:15.56 – 00:28:38.8

um make hard decisions for his team and also you know really is so excited to celebrate successes with his players and I’m I just I’m really really impressed by him as such a thoughtful leader and he’s a fun coach to watch from the from the stands It is never a dull moment but I think that

Maggie:

00:28:39.2 – 00:29:02.15

I just have so much um so much confidence and respect for coach cruise but I think that he you know he really he cares about his guys and that is so apparent and I’m really really hoping I mean just for his sake that the team can start to come out of some of these tough games on top

Vince:

00:29:02.75 – 00:29:16.46

Yeah he he’s definitely a competitive guy You can see that when he’s on the sideline high energy and you know the team typically takes on the personality of the coach which I think is a positive in this instance Uh

Vince:

00:29:16.64 – 00:29:35.48

you know I love that this is an accountable group So I do think they’re gonna get better Do I think they’re going to be Illinois Probably not but I’m hoping that you know in these nonconference games when we’re playing you know lesser competition like a Canisius and quinnipiac and Delaware state

Vince:

00:29:36.08 – 00:29:59.62

I’m hoping we can use these games and really lock in to prepare for the rest of big talk the Big 10 conference play because you know from this point forward you know there’s no easy wins there’s no cupcakes and you know it’s a you know it’s bloody big 10 basketball that’s what it is you got to be the tougher team you gotta hit the tough contested shots when the shot clock is going down and that’s what it takes to win in this division

Vince:

00:30:00.16 – 00:30:08.61

So I think we talked enough about this game Maggie do you have a Mahoney Mauler that you would like to give a player award to

Maggie:

00:30:09.08 – 00:30:09.86

 Um

Maggie:

00:30:11.41 – 00:30:29.12

I guess my my award for today will go to CUBA for his defensive efforts in the first half I think that was really exciting to watch So homey award Mahoney Mahler goes to

Maggie:

00:30:29.38 – 00:30:56.26

CUBA for defense and my shout out that I just want to say what was the guy that I also enjoyed watching was Evan Mahaffy I think he’s just so athletic and so quick and agile that he’s really really fun to watch He really I think brings up the energy level So I don’t know if there’s a specific award I want to give him but just a little shout out

Vince:

00:30:56.76 – 00:31:08.53

Yeah he’s definitely a fun player to watch Just be off of his athleticism alone He can jump out of the gym and we we’ve talked about that a lot of this podcast Uh you know he continued to do some big things

Vince:

00:31:09.04 – 00:31:37.72

I mean I have to give my Fidelity fighter it seems like I do it almost every game but I have to give it to jail and pick it uh on a game where we just got killed on the boards He grabbed 17 So he single handedly had over half of Penn State’s rebounds tonight and that is an area where we gotta be better We gotta box out we gotta get the boards we can’t have it be tipping off of our hands and then you know going behind us to the opposing team

Vince:

00:31:38.09 – 00:31:42.32

that’s just something they gotta lock down and get better because this Illinois team

Vince:

00:31:42.98 – 00:32:04.58

that we’re going up against uh they get a lot of blocks they had 12 blocks against the number number two team in the country texas they had seven steals against them they forced texas into 14 turnovers So that you know that’s a that’s the thing they that’s the thing they do really well Um

Vince:

00:32:05.79 – 00:32:34.22

and you know solid three point shooting team they shot 43% against texas um decent from the free throw line Not really good I guess they had they had an off game there at 68% I guess I can’t say Penn State was bad at 67 say they’re good at 68 so not very good there Um Yeah fine line So you know Illinois kind of what kept texas in the game when Illinois one that big run

Vince:

00:32:35.03 – 00:32:44.21

is that Illinois had a lot of turnovers early and they didn’t hit free throws So when we play Illinois

Vince:

00:32:44.75 – 00:32:47.17

their size is gonna bother us

Vince:

00:32:47.94 – 00:33:16.53

you know they’re a really good rebounding team they get a lot of blocks they get a lot of steals however at times they can be sloppy So I do think if Penn State is going to have a chance to win this game like we talked about we need to get cash in on these threes off of turnovers because when you’re getting in that fast break it’s a it’s a lot more difficult because when you go back on defense typically your first thing to do is sprint to the paint and then turn and find your guy

Vince:

00:33:16.77 – 00:33:30.33

So that’s typically what you’re taught as a basketball player So that enables you at half second if you’re a three point shooter Yeah that gives you more of an opportunity and a bigger window to get open for a three and I’m hoping that

Vince:

00:33:30.54 – 00:33:47.57

yeah we can really play some hard defense on Illinois force them into some stretches where they just are not careful with basketball We can take advantage Go up and down the court with Jalen Pickett and hopefully he can find some guys like Myles dread and Andrew funk to really knock down some trees as well as Seth lundy

Maggie:

00:33:48.83 – 00:33:52.56

Are we giving out an award on Andrew’s behalf

Vince:

00:33:52.57 – 00:34:13.6

Yeah I guess we’ll be able to give out one for Andrew and I think it has to be Seth lundy He was really efficient tonight Five of 11 from the field He was the leading scorer with 16 points Uh did some work on the boards and defensively has some nice blocks and steals and you know he’s really aggressive and he gets in there He did have four fouls tonight but

Vince:

00:34:13.83 – 00:34:23.06

that often comes along with being an aggressive player plays hard So I really liked his effort and intensity tonight So I will give him the bird brawler award

Maggie:

00:34:24.75 – 00:34:25.15

 Yeah

Vince:

00:34:25.16 – 00:34:34.65

so moving on to Illinois I think this is gonna be a tough game They have guys like

Vince:

00:34:35.24 – 00:35:03.96

Matthew Mayer and he was just a beast for Illinois against texas Uh 69 senior can just shoot the rock from anywhere He was eight for 10 from the field five for five from downtown So he’s a an amazing three point shooter has a lot of size Melendez is also a good three point shooter Uh you got guys like Shannon and eps on their team who are really good

Vince:

00:35:04.25 – 00:35:07.71

getting to the hole and knocking down free throws

Vince:

00:35:08.68 – 00:35:36.64

And then they got their uh their big man Hawkins he’s a really great player Um you know really gave texas some fits on the defensive end He had three blocks So they have a lot of size a lot lot of athleticism They have another guard on the bench Harris who is very good and their backup center is also really impressive and he’s got a fun name So we’re watching Northwestern They have a player called Bowie

Vince:

00:35:36.78 – 00:36:03.05

which is one of the most fun names to say in college basketball but Illinois has a guy on the bench called Dane danger and Penn State might find themselves in the danger zone if they cannot knock down some threes like tonight So if they are not hitting threes and not hitting these laps around the room they’re definitely gonna be in the danger zone and find themselves having a hard time you know in Champagne

Vince:

00:36:03.87 – 00:36:04.62

 No

Maggie:

00:36:05.51 – 00:36:06.32

 So

Vince:

00:36:06.33 – 00:36:11.1

final score for Penn State at Illinois what do you think the final score will be Maggie

Maggie:

00:36:11.11 – 00:36:13.44

 Oh gosh Um

Maggie:

00:36:14.06 – 00:36:15.53

 I’m gonna say

Maggie:

00:36:16.74 – 00:36:17.42

 oh

Maggie:

00:36:18.66 – 00:36:23.23

 I’ll do Illinois 79

Maggie:

00:36:23.74 – 00:36:25.41

 Penn State

Maggie:

00:36:26.61 – 00:36:27.99

 72

Vince:

00:36:28.51 – 00:36:39.14

Okay so seven point lost I think I’m gonna go um Illinois 80 for Penn State 73 I do think that

Vince:

00:36:39.87 – 00:36:51.53

Illinois historically is a team that just Penn State really has a hard time with you know over the past number of years and we just never seem to beat them They have a really good program

Vince:

00:36:52.49 – 00:37:16.66

Uh They’ve done well in the big time tournament Haven’t gotten it done at the N C Double A tournament but really great program So yeah I’ll take Illinois 84 to 73 And uh you know we also do a segment on our show called Communion predictions So I’ll give you a minute to think about yours while I go over mine and we’ll do a uh communion prediction

Vince:

00:37:16.97 – 00:37:25.64

And my community prediction is I think we’re going to see a really nice emergence of cabbage I I

Maggie:

00:37:25.64 – 00:37:26.65

 think

Vince:

00:37:26.66 – 00:37:40.35

that um you know cuBA is going to maybe get a little more minutes that he does at times It looks like he’s getting tired on the court having the hands on his hips which oftentimes it does happen

Vince:

00:37:40.65 – 00:37:50.79

with the centers and those bigger guys So I think he’s gonna get his first double double just because of the increased minutes and I’m hoping

Vince:

00:37:51.03 – 00:38:11.4

he really has more confidence in the post I hope they get him some more looks And I think he could potentially draw some fouls and get to the free throw line and if he can knock down those free throws uh could be really good games My community prediction is that we’ll have a double double and he’ll have 10 points and 10 rebounds for penn state

Maggie:

00:38:12.78 – 00:38:22.42

wow Well I was also gonna say the kevin dr breakout game So I guess thinking of my my second Communion prediction

Maggie:

00:38:23.02 – 00:38:26.37

 I’m gonna go the

Maggie:

00:38:27.26 – 00:38:50.52

the rise of the continued rise of Cameron winter I think that he’s someone that we’re we are excited to watch And I think he’s really gonna um step up in this Illinois game again No no stats or numbers to back this up This is a vibes based communion

Maggie:

00:38:50.77 – 00:38:51.34

 So

Vince:

00:38:51.35 – 00:38:57.88

you have to give a number that’s part of the rules because I need to say yes your prediction came true or no it didn’t

Maggie:

00:38:57.88 – 00:38:58.82

 So I

Vince:

00:38:58.83 – 00:39:05.18

need some you know field goal percentage or point percentage assist

Maggie:

00:39:05.97 – 00:39:11.18

Can I give like a number of points Okay so Cameron winter scorchers

Maggie:

00:39:11.73 – 00:39:12.84

 18 points

Vince:

00:39:12.85 – 00:39:14.42

 eight points or more

Maggie:

00:39:14.91 – 00:39:16.04

 Excellent

Vince:

00:39:16.04 – 00:39:18.66

 That’s a that’s a good comedian prediction Oh

Maggie:

00:39:18.66 – 00:39:20.22

 yeah

Vince:

00:39:20.23 – 00:39:24.47

you gotta have it fun you gotta have a number you can’t just say something random and

Vince:

00:39:25.05 – 00:39:30.62

and it’s like how do how do you measure it Because that’s that’s part of the fun seeing if your prediction comes true

Maggie:

00:39:31.19 – 00:39:32.85

 part

Vince:

00:39:32.85 – 00:39:35.04

part of the enjoyment of the communion

Vince:

00:39:35.89 – 00:39:59.23
